Fixes #2637

Problem

A tab that herdr still names by its number takes a few words of its first message (#2019). When that message starts with an attached file's mention (@/Users/example/Library/Mobile Documents/…/.ovis/paste-20261104-101500-0a1b2c3d.png Why does …), the tab read @/Users/example/Library/…. The label also never used the agent's own title for the conversation, even when the pane already had a useful one, such as a Codex thread title.

Reproduced on main 4bc043d in the demo app (no herdr session): New tab with Codex and that first message gives a tab named @/Users/example/Library/…. On this branch the same steps give Why does the login….

Change

  • shortTabLabel (src/lib/tabLabels.ts) drops attached files' @path mentions before it picks the line. An upload path with spaces is matched whole when it has the shape server/paste.ts gives an upload (
-<YYYYMMDD>-<HHMMSS>-<8 hex>.<ext>, a name with no spaces), as chatImages.ts reads it. Any other @/abs/path ends at a space. A relative @src/app.ts is kept as words.
  • A label learned from an attachment mention by an earlier version is no longer shown. It is dropped when the labels settle, so the pane's first message names it again.
  • autoTabLabel (src/lib/tabName.ts) uses the agent's own name for its conversation first (agentPaneName), then the first-message label. That name is the pane's own name, else herdr's pane title, else the terminal title with the chrome a roster row strips. A title is skipped when it only says which agent runs where: the agent's name or its command line (Claude Code, codex --yolo), the folder, or a path.
  • Names someone gave the tab still win. herdr's tab labels are never written, and no model call is added.

This follows the Codex app, which titles a thread from its own thread title and falls back to the first prompt. The DESIGN.md tab-name entry says so.

Screenshots

Before/after at 1280 and 390 (demo fixtures) are on the maintainer's tailnet: http://100.106.153.26:42889/ . Before: the new tab reads @/Users/example/Library/…. After: Why does the login…. In the demo, checkout-api's first tab now reads its pane name Idempotent payments instead of first-message words.

Validation

  • bun run check fast: green (workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests: 10889 pass, 0 fail).
  • New tests in src/lib/tabLabels.test.ts and src/lib/tabName.test.ts. On main, 2 of them fail; on this branch all 26 tests in both files pass.
  • Manual: a headless Chromium script on the demo build, main vs this branch, at 1280 and 390.
  • Not run locally: the Integration and browser lanes and Native Windows (CI runs them).
  • Pre-PR Codex adversarial review (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh) found no HIGH. Its MEDIUMs and LOW are fixed in the second commit, except one noted in a comment below.

    • Automatically named tabs now exclude attached-file paths, including upload paths with spaces, so the remaining message text can provide the label.
    • Agent-provided conversation names take precedence over first-message text, except when the title only identifies the agent or its runtime or location.
    • Previously learned attachment-based labels are replaced when a better label becomes available.

Automatic tab labels now exclude attached-file paths, replace stale attachment-derived labels, and prefer eligible agent conversation titles. Existing custom tab names remain preserved.

Automatic tab names can still omit valid conversation titles, display capitalized commands, or lose a replacement label during synchronization. These are bounded naming defects; merging carries low risk with owner awareness and follow-up.

Explanation

Issue #2637 has four coding requirements. Each is met at the reviewed head, judged from the whole-PR diff against the merge base.

  1. Use the agent's distinct conversation title when one exists. src/lib/tabName.ts adds agentPaneName. It returns the pane's own label, else herdr's reported pane title, else the Codex or Claude terminal title. It skips titles that only name the agent, its command line, a folder, a path, or a process. autoTabLabel checks this name before any learned label.

  2. When the title is generic, derive the fallback from the first message with attachment paths removed. src/lib/tabLabels.ts adds the ATTACHMENT pattern. It removes @ mentions of absolute, home, or drive paths before shortTabLabel picks the line. An upload-shaped path (<name>-<YYYYMMDD>-<HHMMSS>-<8 hex>.<ext>) is matched whole, so the spaced ~/Library/... path in the report is removed. Any other path ends at a space.

  3. Keep manually assigned tab names. autoTabLabel still returns null when customTabLabel(tab, place) is non-null. No change touches that check.

  4. Add no model call and do not change herdr's stored tab names. The diffs to tabName.ts and tabLabels.ts contain no model call and no herdr tab write.

Supporting changes (settleTabLabels dropping attachment-derived labels, preferencesSync.ts replacing a stale label, the DESIGN.md entry, and the changelog) serve the same issue. They clear previously learned attachment labels. The PR also adds tests in tabLabels.test.ts and tabName.test.ts, which the PR summary describes. I did not read the test files.

Known limits, not failures of the requirements: a non-upload path that contains spaces ends at the first space, so its trailing words can remain in the label. Folder names containing ' @' or ' ~' can leave part of a path. The PR description records both limits. The reported case is an upload-shaped path, which the change handles.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area supports issue #2637:

  • src/lib/tabName.ts: agentPaneName and the autoTabLabel change implement the agent-title requirement.
  • src/lib/tabLabels.ts: the ATTACHMENT pattern, attachmentTabLabel, and the settleTabLabels filter implement the attachment-path removal. The filter drops attachment-derived labels that earlier versions learned, so existing tabs stop showing them.
  • src/lib/preferencesSync.ts and its test: when the server holds an attachment-derived label, a local replacement is sent with the old key removed. This clears the same stale labels across synced preference state. It does not change herdr tab labels.
  • DESIGN.md and changelog.d/tab-names-agent-title-attachments.md: documentation of the changed tab-name behavior.
  • Test files: tests for the changed behavior.

No change adds an unrelated feature, refactor, or herdr write path. The PR description's listed review fixes match these hunks. I found no demonstrated unrelated change.

Pre-PR Codex adversarial review (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh) of 46354e0 found no HIGH. Fixed in 0d88fb7:

  • An attachment-path label stored by an earlier version stayed on the tab. It is now hidden and dropped when the labels settle, so the first message names the tab again.
  • A distinct title that starts with the agent's name ("Codex login failure | app") was rejected. Only the agent's command line (its name, flags and flag values) counts as generic now.
  • herdr's pane title kept the omp chrome ("π ⠋ app"), which hid a distinct terminal title. Both candidates are now stripped of that chrome.
  • A path title naming a folder other than the cwd ("/Users/me/other") was shortened and accepted. Path titles are skipped now.
  • After another mention, the regex could swallow the user's words up to an upload-shaped file name mentioned in them. The spaced branch now needs the upload's name (no spaces) right after a path separator.
  • (LOW) A pane name like "/api" was dropped as a slash command. A pane's own name is now shown whole.

Not changed: an upload folder whose name contains " @" (@/Users/me/Design @ Home/.ovis/paste-….png) still leaves part of the path in the label. The regex stops at whitespace followed by @, as src/lib/chatImages.ts does to tell two mentions apart. Such a folder is unusual, and changing the rule here alone would make the two readers disagree.

Review round at 0d88fb7 (omo: BLOCK; Codex Terra xhigh: no HIGH). Fixed in 0d4fa04, then main merged in (f51bab5):

Left as is (LOW):

  • Claude Code's transient "⠂ Compacting conversation" title names the tab while it compacts.
  • (omo feat: web push alerts with the app closed #4, unreproduced) A pane with no transcript whose old attachment label is dropped gets relearned from the next message sent from Chat, not the original first message.
  • (pre-PR round) An upload folder containing " @" still leaves part of the path, as chatImages.ts reads it.

On the scope note: the issue asks for the agent's own conversation title (#2019), so it stays in this PR.

Validation: bun run check fast green at 0d4fa04 (10890 pass, 0 fail). After merging main: the three touched test files pass (49 tests) and bun run typecheck passes.

Codex adversarial review (Terra, xhigh) at f51bab5: no HIGH. The PR has had its fix round, so these are noted, not changed (none is a regression from main, and each falls back to the first message's words or the tab's number, never to a path from a normal upload):

  • MEDIUM: an upload folder containing " @" or " ~" ("Company @ Work") leaves part of the path in the label. Unusual folder names; the rule matches chatImages.ts.
  • MEDIUM: a one-word lowercase Codex thread title ("payments | app"), or one starting with "codex " as typed, falls back to the first message. Codex's generated thread titles are sentences ("Respond to greeting"), so this costs little.
  • MEDIUM: a herdr pane title that is a process command line with arguments ("π ⠋ node /home/me/app") would name the tab. Pane titles come from integrations' report-metadata --title; not seen in practice.
  • MEDIUM: if an unrelated preferences update from the server arrives in the 600 ms before a relearned label replacing an old attachment label is sent, the old one comes back and is hidden again. The tab then shows its number until the label is learned again (next transcript read or reload).
  • LOW: a named shell pane does not name its numbered tab. This is unchanged from main: auto names are for agent panes (Tabs: name a new tab from its first prompt when the title is only the agent's name #2019).

CodeRabbit is rate-limited on this PR ("Review limit reached"), so no CodeRabbit review ran. The omo review and the Codex adversarial reviews (Terra, xhigh) stand in; their findings and how each was resolved are in the comments above.

omo review at f51bab5: BLOCK on a reproduced MEDIUM regression. herdr-core's paneOf (server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts) copies the terminal title into title, so a Gemini, Droid or Cursor status title ("◇ Ready (app)") named the tab there. Fixed in this push: a pane title equal to its terminal title is treated as the terminal title, so only Codex and Claude Code are named by it. Tests cover herdr-core-shaped panes. bun run check fast is green (10898 pass, 0 fail).

omo's LOWs are left as is, as noted above:

  • A relative upload-shaped path in prose after a mention.
  • A " ~" in an upload folder name.
  • The 600 ms preferences race.
  • One-word lowercase titles.
None of them is a regression from main.

omo review at eca897c: CLEAR (no HIGH). Its three reproduced MEDIUMs are edge cases the fix does not fully cover, not regressions from main, and are filed as #2682. LOW notes:

  • The migration drops every stored label that holds an attachment mention, including those of panes that are not open. Such a pane shows its number instead of a broken path.
  • A one-word lowercase Codex title ("payments | app") falls back to the first message's words.
  • Whether Codex 0.166 ever puts a state ("Working") in its title's thread slot was not checked against a live Codex pane.

…upload folders (#2762)

## Change

Fixes #2682: the three edge cases the reviews of #2681 reproduced.

1. **A spaced upload path ran past the user's words.** `@/tmp/a.png
Please review docs/paste-20261104-101500-0a1b2c3d.png for me` named the
tab "for me". Both readers (`ATTACHMENT` in `src/lib/tabLabels.ts`, the
mention reader in `src/lib/chatImages.ts`) now let a spaced path cross a
word ending in an image extension only inside an upload folder `.ovis`,
so the words after `/tmp/a.png ` are never read as the rest of its path.
A spaced `OVIS_PASTE_DIR` upload is still read whole.
2. **A folder named with " @" or " ~" left part of the path in the
label.** `@/Users/me/Company @ Work/.ovis/paste-….png Fix footer` named
the tab "@ Work/.ovis/paste-20261…", and Chat showed no picture for it.
Both readers now stop only at a space that starts another path or
mention (`@/`, `/`, `~/`, `C:\\`), not at a lone " @" or " ~" inside a
folder name. The two readers stay in step.
3. **A repaired label was lost in a sync race.** `takePreferences` kept
the server's value for a key the page already held, so a label relearned
to replace an old attachment-path label was dropped when another
browser's preferences arrived before it was sent. It now keeps the local
label where `preferencesChange` would replace the server's (the server's
is an attachment label and the local one differs), and that label goes
out next.

Known limit (follow-up #2771): an `OVIS_PASTE_DIR` path with a word
ending in an image extension before a space (`/tmp/shots.png backup/`)
is not read whole; dotted folder names like `v1.2 build` are, and the
default `.ovis` folder is unaffected.

## Validation

- Reproduced all three cases on origin/main 7a923ab with a scratch
script before the fix.
- New tests in `tabLabels.test.ts`, `chatImages.test.ts` and
`preferencesSync.test.ts` failed on main (3 fail) and pass with the fix.
- `bun run check fast`: passed (workflow syntax, generated types/themes,
typecheck, build, unit tests 11,085 pass, 0 fail, 44 skip).
- Not run: `bun run check full` (browser lanes), `test:ssh`.
