Summary

Ovis now picks the terminal runtime (herdr's TUI or the Herdr app's core, herdr-core) from facts, and lets the user switch it from Settings when the PC has both.

  • Choice order: OVIS_RUNTIME, else the choice saved from Settings (runtime-<port>.json in the state folder), else the PC's facts. Any trace of herdr's TUI (binary, config, socket) keeps herdr without running anything; only a PC with none asks hc --version, and picks herdr-core when the Herdr app or its core is there. herdr-core is only picked on Linux and macOS.
  • Switch: Settings → About → Terminals shows a Switch row only when the server reports switch_to, i.e. the other runtime is installed and nothing locks the choice. With one runtime installed the row is not shown (the demo matches this; no extra hiding was needed). POST /api/runtime (driving owner, app header) saves the choice and asks the launcher to restart the server on it; a start that fails its health check puts the previous choice back. OVIS_RUNTIME, a server not started by the launcher, or an unsupported OS locks it, and Settings says why.
  • Launcher: switches and update activations run one at a time; readiness is decided from the bridge's own runtime (/api/health?scope=bridge now carries the boot id and runtime), and the bridge is told once the launcher accepted it, so the page following a switch lands only on an accepted server. Older bridges without the bridge-scope boot id are still checked by the whole health answer.
  • hc recovery (herdr-core: finding a moved hc again misses the login-shell PATH and does not re-verify the path #2628): finding a moved hc again reruns the start's own search (login-shell PATH included) and verifies --version before handing it out.
  • On herdr-core, Settings hides herdr's version/update, the server refuses a herdr update, and the header names herdr-core.

Running several runtimes at once is out of scope.

Fixes #2628. Follow-up: #2670 (managed start with a stale herdr socket, pre-existing on main).

Validation

  • bun run check fast at b5ff0d5 (after the review fixes, CodeRabbit fixes and merging origin/main up to cf40bb0): workflow syntax, generated types/themes fresh, typecheck, build, unit tests (11101 pass, 0 fail, 44 skip) all ok.
  • New/updated tests: server/herdr-core/runtime-choice.test.ts, server/herdr-core/runtime.test.ts, server/api.contract.test.ts, server/updater.test.ts, server/herdr-update.test.ts, src/lib/runtimeSwitch.test.ts.
  • Manual QA of the switch flow in an isolated demo (isolated session, temp state/XDG dirs), desktop and phone widths.
  • Skipped locally: bun run check full (left to CI's Integration and browser job).

…ettings

- The runtime comes from OVIS_RUNTIME, else the choice saved from Settings
(runtime.json), else the PC's facts: any trace of herdr's TUI keeps herdr
without running anything; only a PC with none asks hc --version, and picks
herdr-core when the Herdr app or its core is there.
- Settings > About > Terminals switches between herdr TUI and the Herdr app:
POST /api/runtime (a driving owner, the app's own header) saves the choice
and asks the launcher to restart the server on it; a start that fails its
health check goes back to the previous runtime. OVIS_RUNTIME, a server
without the launcher, or the OS locks it with a reason.
- Finding a moved hc again reruns the start's own search, login shell PATH
  included, verifying --version afresh (#2628).
- On herdr-core, Settings hides herdr's version and update, the server
refuses a herdr update, and the header names herdr-core.
…d stale facts

- Runtime switches and update activations run one at a time in the launcher;
a switch asked of a bridge an update replaced is dropped, as the new one
already read the choice. A switch to herdr waits only for the bridge (its
boot id now in /api/health?scope=bridge), so a stopped herdr TUI is no
failure; a stop is never taken for a failed start; a bridge that exited
during a change is noticed after it.
- The saved choice is per port (runtime-<port>.json), written through an
unpredictable exclusive temp file, and a failed start puts back only its own
switch's choice, or the PC's facts when those had chosen.
- The launcher says it restarts on a switch (OVIS_RUNTIME_SWITCH); an older
supervisor locks the switch instead of ignoring it.
- Detection reads both herdr sockets and config folders, never picks
herdr-core where it is not served, and only a missing hc falls back.
- While a moved hc is not found again, nothing unverified is handed out, and
  searches are 10 s apart.
- The wait for the restarted server lives for the page, and each ask is bounded.
… the bridge that stays

- Every launch waits for the whole health answer when the bridge serves
herdr-core or herdr's TUI runs, and only for the bridge otherwise, so a
chosen herdr TUI that is stopped no longer fails a later start, update or
rollback; no bridge after a failed change is noticed like an exited one.
- The page takes a new bridge once its whole health answers, or once it
  outlasted the launcher's 20 s check: a herdr-core start still being checked
  may yet be rolled back.
- A plain message while a moved hc is found again; a switch from a bridge an
  update replaced is logged.
…time, and says when it took it

- A new bridge says in /api/health?scope=bridge which runtime it serves; the
launcher asks for the whole health answer when that is herdr-core or herdr's
TUI socket is there, whatever chose the runtime (OVIS_RUNTIME, Settings or
  the PC's facts).
- The launcher tells the bridge once it took it (bridge-accepted), which the
bridge's own answer reports; a page following a switch waits for that, so it
never lands on a start still being checked, nor on a slow health answer.
… bridge-scope boot id

An older checkout a failing release falls back to carries no boot id in
/api/health?scope=bridge: the launcher checks it by the whole health answer,
as it always did.
…e when it is older

A stand-in launch: a bridge of this revision serving herdr with herdr stopped
is taken on ?scope=bridge alone; one that predates the bridge-scope boot id
only on the whole health answer; both are told bridge-accepted.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Switch between the Herdr app and herdr TUI terminal runtimes in Settings. Ovis restarts with your selection, reports restart progress, and can fall back if the chosen runtime is unavailable.
    • Runtime detection selects an available option automatically when no override or saved choice applies.
    • Status displays now identify which runtime is active. Terminal panes and related saved state remain with their respective runtime when switching.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved recovery when the Herdr core executable moves, including checking that a rediscovered executable is valid.
    • Herdr update controls are no longer offered while using the Herdr app runtime.

The pull request adds automatic runtime selection, saved runtime choices, and switching between herdr and herdr-core. It connects server health and switch APIs to launcher restarts and adds Settings controls, restart tracking, runtime-specific status text, tests, and documentation.

Changes: Runtime selection and switching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime detection and saved choices
server/herdr-core/runtime-choice.ts, server/herdr-core/runtime-file.ts, server/herdr-core/runtime-choice.test.ts, docs/guide.md, changelog.d/herdr-runtime-switch.md
Runtime selection uses OVIS_RUNTIME, a saved per-port choice, or filesystem detection. Saved choices include prior runtime and switch metadata, with restoration limited to a matching switch ID.
herdr-core discovery and recovery
server/herdr-core/runtime.ts, server/herdr-core/discovery.ts, server/herdr-core/connection.ts, server/core/terminal-process.ts, server/herdr-core/runtime.test.ts, server/herdr-update.ts, server/herdr-update.test.ts
The server retries its saved startup search when the discovered core executable moves and verifies replacement candidates. Missing-core startup and moved-command attachment use distinct errors. Herdr updates are unsupported when the server serves herdr-core.
Runtime health and switch API
shared/machines.ts, shared/protocol.ts, server/index.ts, server/dispatch.ts, server/api.contract.test.ts, scripts/conventions.test.ts
Health contracts include runtime and launcher information. The runtime endpoint accepts eligible driving-owner requests and forwards validated targets to the runtime service. Server startup selects the runtime and configures the service.
Launcher readiness and runtime restart
server/supervisor.ts, server/updater.test.ts
The supervisor checks bridge readiness and serializes runtime restarts with update activation. It restores the previous choice if a runtime switch fails to start.
Settings switching and restart tracking
src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx, src/App.tsx, src/lib/api.ts, src/lib/runtimeSwitch.ts, src/lib/runtimeSwitch.test.ts, src/lib/i18n*
Settings displays runtime choices and fallback or lock information, requests switches, and tracks server recovery. Header status and translations distinguish herdr-core from herdr.

Explanation

The title "feat(herdr-core): choose the runtime from facts, and switch it from Settings" matches the main change. The PR adds runtime selection from OVIS_RUNTIME, saved choice, or PC facts, and a Settings switch backed by POST /api/runtime. The title is a little long (76 characters), but it is specific and descriptive.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Change section that explains the problem and behavior, and a Validation section that lists checks run and skipped. It links #2628 as the fixed issue. The Change section gives a clear feature summary. The Validation section lists bun run check fast results, updated test files, manual QA, and skipped bun run check full. The template asks for contract-test coverage on HTTP changes. The description names server/api.contract.test.ts as an updated test, but does not state contract-test coverage explicitly. That gap is minor.

…rollback puts back a switch made during it

- A bridge the launcher has not taken yet refuses a runtime switch (runtime_switching): a second
switch saved over a start still being checked made its rollback find no choice to put back.
- A switch a bridge saved while an update replaced it is put back when the update's start fails,
so the previous version does not start again on the runtime that just failed.
…mise nothing of pins across a switch

- A herdr OVIS_HERDR_BIN names outside PATH and ~/.local/bin keeps herdr when the PC's facts
decide, as before this change; it was taken for no TUI, so the Herdr app was served with no
  switch back.
- The switch's confirmation no longer says pins, muted alerts and drafts stay per runtime: the
sidebar prunes pins of panes the runtime shown does not have.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Re-check hc at its path when the binary there changes.

52-59: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Re-check hc at its path when the binary there changes.

hcBin() returns the path that startRuntime() verified for as long as the file exists. spawnHcConnect() then runs hc connect on that path without a version check. The recovery search runs only after the file disappears.

If the file at the same path is replaced by a different protocol generation, for example by an overwrite or a retargeted symlink, each connection starts the new binary. parseHello() then rejects it on the generation mismatch. The path still exists, so the search never runs, and herdr-core connections keep failing until the server restarts.

A fix needs an asynchronous --version check of the binary at that path before the next connect. hcBin() is synchronous, so this check needs a design change and cannot be a one-line edit there.

Review comment at @server/herdr-core/runtime.ts around lines 52 - 59:
Update the binary-selection and connection flow around hcBin() and
spawnHcConnect() so the binary at the selected path is asynchronously checked
for the expected protocol generation before the next connect attempt. Redesign
the synchronous hcBin() contract as needed; ensure same-path replacements,
including retargeted symlinks, trigger revalidation rather than relying only on
file disappearance, and preserve parseHello()'s generation-mismatch safeguard.
Minor follow-up Leftover herdr socket file fails the herdr bridge start.

164-169: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Leftover herdr socket file fails the herdr bridge start.

When the herdr socket path exists, readiness falls back to the unscoped /api/health route. That route awaits ping(). A socket file with no listener makes ping() reject with connect_failed. The route then returns an error without web_ui.boot_id, so the launcher never accepts the bridge. The launcher waits 20 seconds, stops the bridge, and throws.

Settings offers a switch to herdr while herdr's TUI is stopped. When a leftover socket file exists, that switch fails and restores the previous runtime. The launch comment says a stopped herdr TUI is "no failed start". A leftover socket with no listener contradicts that contract.

Readiness must decide how to treat a socket that accepts no connection. Treating it like an absent socket follows the documented contract. A herdr that is running but not answering must still fail the start, so the change needs a clear boundary between those two cases.

Update the readiness check in the bridge startup flow around `ready` and
`socketPath` to distinguish a leftover socket with no listener from a running
herdr that is not answering. Treat a confirmed connection failure to the socket
as absent and allow startup to proceed; preserve failure for a running herdr
that does not answer, using an established way to determine that boundary rather
than relying only on socket-file existence or the unscoped `/api/health`
response.

Review findings and how each was resolved (head 1bb8a29)

Codex (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh), round 1 at ff6b6a5

  • HIGH: a switch saved while an update replaced the bridge was lost, and the update's rollback restarted the previous version on the runtime that had just failed. Fixed in 78264b6: the supervisor remembers a switch from a replaced bridge during an activation and puts it back before the rollback start (confirmed by code trace; the race is not covered by a test).
  • HIGH: a second switch sent to a candidate bridge still under its startup check overwrote the saved choice, so the first switch's rollback found nothing to restore. Fixed in 78264b6: a bridge the launcher has not accepted refuses a switch (409 runtime_switching). Test: saves no switch over a start the launcher has not taken yet.
  • HIGH: a stale herdr socket blocks a managed start. Reproduced on current main (4bc043d) in an isolated run: The new bridge failed its startup health check., exit 1. On main this also happens with no socket at all. This PR fixes the no-socket case but the stale-socket case remains, so it is tracked as a follow-up: Managed start fails when herdr's socket file is stale #2670.
  • MEDIUMs not fixed here (larger than a cheap fix, follow-ups): rollback reported to the page as a completed switch; the POST can be cut off by the restart before the page starts waiting; the switch row is gone after switching to a stopped herdr TUI (the row's text tells the user to start herdr); a saved herdr-core choice stays after its fallback (documented, shown in Settings); the restore's id check is not atomic across two supervisors sharing a state folder and port; detection reads the default socket while RPC uses HERDR_SOCKET.

Codex, round 2 at 78264b6: no new HIGH; the two fixes cover the reported races.

omo review at ff6b6a5 (BLOCK)

  • HIGH: a herdr set by OVIS_HERDR_BIN outside PATH and ~/.local/bin was not counted as herdr's TUI, so a PC with the Herdr app was moved to herdr-core with no switch back. Reproduced by a failing test, fixed in 1bb8a29.
  • MEDIUM: the confirmation said pins, muted alerts and drafts stay per runtime, but the sidebar prunes pins of panes the shown runtime lacks (pre-existing with OVIS_RUNTIME). Fixed in 1bb8a29 by removing that promise from the dialog (all four languages); keeping pins per runtime is a follow-up.
  • LOWs (switch row gone with a stopped TUI, saved choice after fallback, runtime/accepted in the unauthenticated bridge answer): left as is, noted.

Validation for 1bb8a29: bun run check fast passed (unit 10903 pass, 0 fail). One earlier run had a load-related timeout in scripts/typecheck.test.ts (Go defaults), which passed alone and in the rerun.

…re, and keep the way back with herdr stopped

- A page that switched the runtime in place no longer takes the snapshots of the runtime it
switches back to for stale reads of a replaced herdr: what one runtime's panes held goes to
Recover unsent text instead of into the other runtime's pane with the same id.
- A driving owner reads the runtime facts from the bridge's own answer too, so Settings keeps the
Switch row after a switch to a herdr TUI that is stopped.
- docs/guide.md no longer says pins, mutes and drafts stay with each runtime's panes.
…uncher reads PORT as the server does

- Another tab hears the switching page clear its history through storage, and any page whose
local health names another runtime (a switch made on another device) stops taking the runtime
it left for a stale read, so no draft of one runtime shows in the other's pane.
- Settings reads the bridge's runtime facts again once herdr-core's version is known.
- The launcher takes an empty PORT for the default, as the server does, so both name the same
  saved runtime file.
… and keeps its drafts stored

- herdr's TUI names no runtime in its health, so a page now reads it as herdr's: a change in
either direction, after the first read, clears the runtime the page left from its history,
in storage too, so drafts typed after the switch back are stored and survive a reload.
- Settings reads the bridge's runtime facts again every 10 s while About is open.
- The guide and the contract name the saved choice runtime-<port>.json.

Later review rounds (dori review / omo + Codex Terra), resolved at ae325f5

1bb8a29 - BLOCK

  • HIGH: switching herdr -> herdr-core -> herdr in place left the page on herdr-core's pane lifetime, so one runtime's draft showed in the other's pane with the same id. Reproduced (failing unit test), fixed in a3dbace: a switch clears the page's outlived-herdr history; each runtime's unsent text goes to Recover unsent text.
  • MEDIUM: after a switch to a stopped herdr TUI, Settings lost the way back (runtime facts only came with a herdr ping). Fixed in a3dbace: a driving owner also gets herdr_runtime in /api/health?scope=bridge, which Settings reads; contract test added.
  • MEDIUM: pins/mutes are pruned across runtimes (pre-existing with OVIS_RUNTIME); docs/guide.md corrected. Keeping them per runtime is a follow-up.

a3dbace - BLOCK

  • MEDIUM: another tab kept the old history. Reproduced (two-page test), fixed in 87b5627: other tabs follow through the storage event; other devices on a health runtime change.
  • MEDIUM: Settings facts read once. Fixed (re-read, then every 10 s while About is open, ae325f5).
  • LOW: launcher read PORT ?? default, the server PORT || default; unified.
  • Not changed: rollback to a runtime the PC's facts had chosen returns to detection (intended; only fails with the stale socket tracked in Managed start fails when herdr's socket file is stale #2670).

87b5627 - BLOCK

  • HIGH: herdr's TUI health names no runtime, so another device never saw a switch back. Reproduced, fixed in ae325f5 (TUI read as herdr, change only after the first read).
  • MEDIUM: that device's drafts stayed memory-only after switching back. Reproduced by a test, fixed: a runtime change also clears the stored history.
  • LOW: docs/contract now name runtime-<port>.json.

ae325f5 - CLEAR. Remaining LOWs noted, not fixed: a short window on another device before its health read lands; saved herdr-core choice after a fallback (documented); herdr installed only outside PATH/~/.local/bin with no config; runtime in the unauthenticated bridge answer.

Validation at ae325f5: bun run check fast passed (unit 10906 pass, 0 fail).

…health read, and find a bare OVIS_HERDR_BIN on PATH

- A snapshot taken for a stale read of a herdr the page left is kept, and observed again once a
runtime change releases that herdr, so a roster or socket read that arrives before the health
read no longer leaves one runtime's draft in the other's pane.
- OVIS_HERDR_BIN given as a bare name is looked up on PATH, as the spawn does.

Final review rounds

23cf630 (after merging origin/main with #2693) - BLOCK

  • Another device that read the TUI's snapshot before its health read named the runtime kept routing a TUI pane to herdr-core's stored state. Reproduced by a unit test (roster before health), fixed in 46b4d84: a snapshot taken for a stale read is kept and observed again once a runtime change releases that herdr.
  • LOW: a bare OVIS_HERDR_BIN was not looked up on PATH. Reproduced, fixed (Bun.which, as the spawn does); test added.
  • LOW: a saved herdr-core choice stays after its core vanished during the switch: documented fallback, Settings says so; left as is.

46b4d84 - CLEAR. Remaining notes, not fixed here: the stale-herdr release for a returning runtime covers this PC only (remote PCs as on main); hc is searched twice when facts decide (a risk only with hanging candidates); no how-to line on a directly started herdr-core server; Homebrew-only herdr outside PATH with no config is not detected; HC_MOVED literal repeated in connection.ts.

Validation at 46b4d84: bun run check fast passed (unit 10918 pass, 0 fail, 42 skip).

…ed herdr-core where it is not served, and no OVIS_RUNTIME how-to there

Addresses CodeRabbit's review on #2667:
- a config HERDR_CONFIG_PATH names keeps herdr when the PC's facts decide;
- on an OS that does not serve herdr-core, a saved herdr-core choice is ignored before it can stop the server;
- Settings gives no OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core how-to where the platform locks the switch.
devswha added a commit that referenced this pull request Nov 4, 2026
## Summary

On a Linux or macOS PC that has herdr-core (`hc`) and no herdr, `curl
-fsSL https://ovis.sh/install.sh | sh` used to install herdr's TUI and
the herdr plugin anyway, and then stop at "herdr is not running ... Run:
herdr". It now sets Ovis up on herdr-core instead:

- **Runtime pick:** `OVIS_RUNTIME` (`herdr` / `herdr-core`) when set.
Otherwise herdr-core when an earlier run installed Ovis on it, or when
there is no `herdr` and an hc answers `--version` with `hc <version>`.
Otherwise herdr, installed when missing, as before. Only `--version` is
run (any other hc command starts a core), within a 5 s bound. Candidates
follow the server's own search: `OVIS_HC_BIN`, the PATH, `~/.local/bin`,
Homebrew, `/usr/local/bin`, mise, Nix, cargo, with `herdr-core` before
`hc` in each. `--version` must exit 0.
- **No herdr, no plugin:** Bun only. Ovis is cloned at the release tag
(`--depth 1`, then a local `main` branch at that commit so Settings →
Updates accepts the checkout) into `~/.local/share/ovis/app.new`, built
with the same steps as `herdr-plugin.toml`'s Linux/macOS `[[build]]`
(preflight, `bun install`, `bun run build`; the Rust PTY host is skipped
because herdr-core's terminals don't use it), and moved to
`~/.local/share/ovis/app` only once built. A rerun keeps that checkout.
Settings → Updates keeps it current through the managed launcher, as it
does for the plugin. I checked the updater's tag fetch, unshallow fetch
and ancestry check on a shallow tag clone.
- **Settings:** `~/.config/ovis/env`, owner-only, gets
`OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core` (replacing any other runtime named in `env` or
`.env`). It also gets the hc found, as `OVIS_HC_BIN` (released servers
run only that or `hc` on the PATH), and `HC_SESSION`/`HC_SOCKET` when
the installer ran with them. The service and the installer's start pass
`HERDR_PLUGIN_CONFIG_DIR`/`HERDR_PLUGIN_STATE_DIR` for this folder and
`~/.local/state/ovis`, so a herdr plugin's config found later is never
read in its place. Where the herdr plugin already runs Ovis,
`OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core` is refused with a pointer to the plugin's own
settings.
- **Start and service:** Ovis is started with `bun
<app>/scripts/plugin.ts start`, the managed launcher the plugin uses
too, so telemetry reports `install_method: managed`. Its start, stop and
status work the same. It is registered as a user service that starts it
at login:
- Linux: `~/.config/systemd/user/ovis.service` (oneshot +
`RemainAfterExit`; `ExecStop` runs `plugin.ts stop`), `systemctl --user
enable --now`. When linger is off, it prints the `loginctl
enable-linger` hint.
- macOS: the `sh.ovis.server` LaunchAgent (`RunAtLoad`,
`AbandonProcessGroup`), loaded with `launchctl bootstrap`.
- With no user systemd (containers, some WSL), it starts Ovis once and
prints the command to start it again.
- **Windows:** `install.ps1` keeps herdr. When it finds herdr-core, it
says Ovis runs on herdr-core on Linux and macOS only for now.
- Docs: INSTALL.md (method C, uninstall) and the guide's "Herdr app
terminals" section. Changelog fragment added.

Note on #2667: that PR picks the runtime from facts and offers a
Settings switch, and `OVIS_RUNTIME` locks that switch. This installer
writes `OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core` because today's server only serves
herdr-core when it is set. Once #2667 is merged, the env line can be
dropped in favor of its detection; I'll follow up if this lands first.
No #2667 file is touched here.

## Validation

- Before: clean `ubuntu:24.04` container with only hc 0.1.17 (from
`releases.herdr.dev/core/install.sh`). main's install.sh installed herdr
0.9.5 and the plugin v0.4.22, and the app was not running.
- After, same container: no herdr installed, Ovis v0.4.22 in
`~/.local/share/ovis/app`, `/api/health` answers
`"runtime":"herdr-core"`, and `GET /api/telemetry` shows
`install_method: "managed"`. A second run says "already installed" and
keeps the running server.
- After, in a systemd container (linger on): `ovis.service` enabled and
`active (exited)` with the server processes in its cgroup. `systemctl
--user restart ovis` brings it back. After a container restart, Ovis
answers again within 2 s. `systemctl --user stop ovis` ends it.
- `scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts` (new, 24 tests): runtime pick, hc
probing (another program named hc, a hung one, a failing one,
OVIS_HC_BIN, a saved one, cargo), the env file (mode 0600, idempotent,
an existing runtime kept, the pre-rename dir), the systemd unit and
LaunchAgent with stand-in tools, and the build steps matching
`herdr-plugin.toml`.
- `sh -n` / `dash -n` pass. shellcheck (koalaman/shellcheck:stable)
reports only info-level SC2030/SC2031 PATH notes, the same kind as on
main.
- `bun run check fast`: passed at 868ae08: workflow syntax, generated
types/themes fresh, typecheck, build, unit tests (10915 pass, 0 fail, 42
skip). Earlier runs on this busy host failed in unrelated files from
/tmp running out of inodes (ENOSPC); those files passed when rerun
alone.
- Not run here: macOS (the LaunchAgent path is covered only by the
stand-in test above) and the Windows CI job.

…naged start (#2767)

## Summary
A managed start (the launcher in `server/supervisor.ts`) no longer fails
when herdr's socket file is left over from a herdr that was killed or
lost power.

The launcher decided "herdr's TUI must answer the whole health check"
from the socket path existing. A stale socket file exists but refuses
every connect, so the ping inside `/api/health` failed with
`connect_failed`, the 20 s startup check timed out and the supervisor
exited with `The new bridge failed its startup health check.`

- `herdrMayListen()` in `server/herdr/client.ts` connects to the socket
and sends nothing. Only proof counts as a stopped herdr: no socket
(`ENOENT`) or a refused connect (`ECONNREFUSED`). Anything else (an open
connect, `EACCES`, any other error, or no answer within a second) still
waits for the whole health answer.
- The launcher uses it where it checked `existsSync(socketPath)`.

Fixes #2670

## Reproduction (isolated: temp HOME, XDG_CONFIG_HOME, OVIS_STATE_DIR
and HERDR_SOCKET; loopback free port; `env -i ... bun
server/supervisor.ts`)
| socket | main 3344ef6 (with #2667) | this PR |
|---|---|---|
| stale (bound, then closed) | exit 1 after 22 s, `The new bridge failed
its startup health check.` | ready in 1 s |
| missing | ready in 0 s | ready in 0 s |

Before #2667 (main 4bc043d) both cases failed after ~22 s; #2667 fixed
the missing socket only.

## Validation
- `bun run check fast` on this head: workflow syntax, generated
types/themes fresh, typecheck, build, unit tests (11113 pass, 0 fail, 44
skip) all ok.
- `server/updater.test.ts` "takes a bridge by its own answer...": the
new stale-socket case fails against main's
`server/supervisor.ts`/`server/herdr/client.ts` (the whole health answer
is asked for) and passes with this change; the live-listener case still
asks for the whole answer.
- `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test server/conventions.test.ts` passes
(herdr's socket is opened only in `server/herdr/client.ts`).
- Manual repro above, isolated (temp HOME/XDG/state, `HERDR_SOCKET` in a
temp dir, loopback free port).
- Skipped locally: `bun run check full` (left to CI's Integration and
browser job); the new test cases are skipped on Windows, where herdr's
socket is a named pipe.
