fix(herdr-core): scroll back through a terminal's history - #2664
Fixes#2663. Fixes#2633 (same root cause: herdr-core has no viewport to scroll, so the Terminal view had no history).
Problem. On herdr-core (OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core) a pane's Terminal view cannot scroll back; the Chat view of the same pane scrolls normally. xterm runs with scrollback: 0 as it does on herdr, where herdr's TUI owns the history and pane.scroll moves its viewport. hc has no viewport to scroll: it has no scroll method at all (the adapter answers pane.scroll with unsupported), so every line that left the top of the screen was gone, and the wheel, a swipe and the scroll buttons had nothing to move.
Fix. On herdr-core the browser keeps the history, as any terminal emulator does:
CoreAttachSession attaches with hc's history: TERMINAL_HISTORY_LINES (2,000, shared/terminal-flow.ts), the same replay hc attach --history shows: the terminal's last lines, with their colours and rewrapped to the viewer's width, ahead of the screen. The first output of each attach starts with ED 3, so a reconnect or a tab coming back replaces the history it already holds instead of doubling it (hc sends no ED 3 or RIS itself).
A herdr-core server lists a new terminal-history feature in its features frame and first snapshot (shared/protocol.ts); herdr's server does not, so nothing changes there.
HerdrSocket.hasTerminalHistory() reads it, and useTerminalMount sets xterm's scrollback to 2,000 lines while it holds (back to 0 on a reconnect to a herdr server), refitting because the fit leaves xterm's scrollbar a column.
The wheel and xterm's scrollbar then scroll the history natively. A phone swipe scrolls it with term.scrollLines, because the synthetic wheels it dispatches otherwise land past xterm's viewport and come out as arrow keys. Both only apply on the main screen with mouse reporting off: a program that reads the mouse or uses the alternate screen (vim, less, an agent's fullscreen TUI) still gets the wheel, as before.
Design followed. VS Code's integrated terminal (xterm.js with its own scrollback) and Zed's terminal: the emulator keeps the lines that scroll off. It differs from herdr only because hc keeps no viewport a client could move. A separate history view built from terminal.read was rejected: that read is plain text without colours, and hc has no paged or revisioned reads to keep such a view consistent with the stream.
Limits.
Main screen only: a full-screen program has no history to scroll back to, in any terminal.
Each attach replays up to 2,000 lines again (about 16 KB for short lines, more for coloured or wide output); a late joiner's replay stays capped at 128 KB.
On herdr-core the terminal gives xterm's scrollbar its column (about 14 px).
Find in terminal and the viewport scroll buttons still need herdr's own viewport and stay unavailable on herdr-core.
A swipe on a view sized to another device (an adopted grid, as in observe mode) pans the grid and does not scroll the local history; a desktop wheel or the scrollbar still does.
A program that redraws in place on the main screen can leave earlier frames in the history, as it does in any terminal or in hc attach --history.
Docs: docs/guide.md (herdr-core section), DESIGN.md (terminal host), AGENTS.md (scrollback trap), docs/development.md (new browser check), and changelog.d/herdr-core-terminal-scrollback.md.
This touches the WS contract (a new ServerFeature value), so it waits for a real review per AGENTS.md.
Validation
bun run check fast: passed on the final tree (10,884 unit tests, typecheck, build, generated types and themes, workflow syntax).
bun scripts/core-history-scroll-demo-regression.ts (new, registered in scripts/ci-browser.sh and scripts/ci-browser-timings.json): PASS core and PASS herdr, run in a disposable Debian container with Chromium (CHROME_PATH=/usr/bin/chromium). It covers the initial history above the screen, the wheel scrolling back and returning to the bottom, a replay keeping the buffer's length, a phone swipe (CDP touch), no arrow keys typed to the program, and herdr keeping no local history. It caught a real bug during development (an inverted swipe direction). Mutation check: with the ED 3 left out of the fixture's stream, the replay assertion fails (300 -> 556 lines). Last run before a comment- and docs-only tidy; not rerun after it.
WS contract coverage, both sides in unit tests: server/core/socket.test.ts asserts a herdr-core server lists terminal-history and a herdr server does not; src/lib/ws.test.ts covers the client reading it from the features frame and dropping it on a reconnect to a herdr snapshot. No new *.contract.test.ts: the herdr-core path needs no live herdr.
server/herdr-core/attach-session.test.ts: the attach sends history: TERMINAL_HISTORY_LINES and the first output is prefixed with ED 3 exactly once.
Real hc 0.1.17: this branch's CoreAttachSession against a live hc daemon in a disposable Alpine (musl) container, UID 1000, all capabilities dropped. A reattach stream starts with exactly one ED 3, followed by the replayed history in order from its first line.
Skipped: bun run check full; a graphical browser against a real herdr-core server end to end; iOS Safari and real touch hardware; a herdr-core PC reached through a remote PC or the relay; Windows; arm64.
Context for AI coding agents
Facts checked against hc 0.1.17 that the code relies on, so they need not be rediscovered:
hc has no scroll API (32 methods). pane.scroll cannot be emulated on herdr-core; do not synthesize it from terminal.read snapshots.
terminal.attachhistory = "scrollback lines to show first (main screen only)". With it the stream is \x18\e[!p … \e[?1049l … \e[H\e[2J + history lines (SGR kept) + \e[0m\r\n + rows+1 \n + \e[H\e[2J + the screen. The history is rewrapped to the attaching viewer's cols. hc kept about 14,000 lines in testing (terminal.read with 100000 lines answered complete: false).
hc never sends ED 3 or RIS. The ED 3 prefix in CoreAttachSession (CLEAR_SCROLLBACK) is what keeps a reattach from doubling the history; attach-session.test.ts pins it, and the browser check's replay step shows what a missing one does.
terminal.read returns plain text without colours (complete, how, text). It is not a substitute for the attach stream (see the pane.read trap in AGENTS.md).
xterm 6 behaviour this depends on:
With scrollback > 0 FitAddon reserves a scrollbar column, so a scrollback change must be followed by a refit (syncHistory() returns whether it changed).
Real wheel events scroll the viewport natively unless the mouse protocol reports the wheel. Synthetic wheels dispatched on term.element do not reach the viewport and fall back to arrow keys, so touch uses term.scrollLines directly. Its sign: negative is older lines, the wheel's sign, not the inverted one the mirror's lineScroll path uses.
ED 2 does not push the screen into scrollback; ED 3 clears it.
Where things are:
Server: server/herdr-core/attach-session.ts (history param, ED 3), server/core/socket.ts + server/core/server-core.ts (terminalHistory dependency, the feature).
Shared: shared/protocol.ts (ServerFeature, the full explanation), shared/terminal-flow.ts (TERMINAL_HISTORY_LINES).
Client: src/lib/ws.ts (hasTerminalHistory), src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts (syncHistory, the touch branch in sendTouchWheels, and outputProbe().history for tests).
Browser check: scripts/core-history-scroll-demo-regression.ts. Its fixture adds terminal-history to the demo's features for ?server=core and holds the pane bytes until the features frame is out, as a real server sends it first.
Invariants to keep:
herdr keeps scrollback: 0; only the terminal-history feature turns local history on.
Scrolling the local history never types into the program (no wheel-to-arrow or wheel-to-PageUp mapping).
A program that reads the mouse, or is on the alternate screen, keeps the wheel.
Known follow-ups, not in this PR:
A "Jump to latest" control for a terminal scrolled up (Chat's existing one in ChatView.tsx is the pattern).
TerminalViewportTools still polls GET /api/pane/scroll on herdr-core, which answers scroll: null. This predates this PR and is harmless, but the poll restarts at 250 ms on output. Turning the tools off there needs a decision on what Mod+Shift+PageUp should do on herdr-core (page xterm's local history is the obvious one).
No override for scrolling the local history while a program reads the mouse.
No test yet that the view holds still while output streams in when scrolled up; xterm does so by default, and the only Ovis code that jumps to the bottom runs on the user's own sends.
On herdr-core the attach replays hc's last 2,000 lines (terminal.attach history), prefixed with ED 3 so a reattach replaces them, and the server lists a new terminal-history feature. With it the browser's xterm keeps that scrollback: the wheel and scrollbar scroll it natively and a swipe through scrollLines, while a program that reads the mouse or uses the alternate screen still gets the wheel. herdr keeps scrollback 0.

New Features
Herdr-core terminal sessions now support browser-managed scrollback. Each attach loads up to 2,000 recent lines, which can be navigated with the scrollbar, mouse wheel, or touch swipe.
Limitations
Full-screen apps and programs that capture mouse input do not provide scrollback navigation. Pane search and adjacent scroll controls are unavailable for herdr-core terminals.
herdr-core now requests the last 2,000 terminal lines on attach and advertises a terminal-history feature. When that feature is present, the browser retains history in xterm and supports local scrolling. Browser regression coverage and documentation describe the behavior.
The protocol adds terminal-history and the 2,000-line limit. Core socket setup advertises the feature when servingCore() is true. Socket tests cover both feature states.
Replay history and scroll locally server/herdr-core/attach-session.ts, server/herdr-core/attach-session.test.ts, src/lib/ws.ts, src/lib/ws.test.ts, src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts, src/components/PaneTerminal.css, AGENTS.md, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/herdr-core-terminal-scrollback.md, docs/guide.md
Attach requests 2,000 lines and clears client scrollback before its first output. The client synchronizes xterm’s scrollback with the capability and handles eligible touch-wheel input locally. Documentation describes the behavior and unavailable controls.
Browser regression and CI coverage scripts/core-history-scroll-demo-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, scripts/ci-browser-timings.json, docs/development.md
The browser regression checks core history retention, wheel and swipe scrolling, replay behavior, and the herdr comparison case. The CI sequence and development guide include the regression command.
Initial terminal history can be lost under connection timing races, and an unfocused window can resize a terminal used on another device. Resolve these issues before merging; the additional browser assertions improve regression protection.

Explanation
The title "fix(herdr-core): scroll back through a terminal's history" matches the main change. The PR lets the herdr-core Terminal view keep and scroll through up to 2,000 lines of history, using xterm scrollback, a new terminal-history feature, and ED 3 on attach. The title is short, single-sentence, and names the platform scope.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2663 requires terminal history scrolling for herdr-core. CoreAttachSession requests history: TERMINAL_HISTORY_LINES and prefixes the first output with ED 3. The server advertises terminal-history, and useTerminalMount enables xterm scrollback only for that feature. Native wheel, scrollbar, and touch scrolling use the local history without typing arrow keys. The reported unit and browser regression tests cover replay, scrolling, reconnect behavior, and herdr compatibility.

Explanation
The changes stay within issue #2663. Server protocol changes identify when client-managed terminal history applies. Client changes consume that capability. Tests, documentation, design notes, changelog updates, and CI registration support the terminal history behavior. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Assert that the buffer keeps all 300 replayed lines.
The core check at lines 142-144 passes for any retained history above the screen rows, because it only tests baseY > 0. A later change that caps retained history below 300 lines would still pass. The added assertion checks the buffer length against the 300 replayed lines.
Suggested fix
assert.ok(shown.baseY > 0 && shown.viewportY === shown.baseY, `core: the history sits above the screen, which shows the newest rows (${JSON.stringify(shown)})`);
+ assert.ok(shown.length >= 300, `core: the buffer keeps all 300 replayed lines (${JSON.stringify(shown)})`);

Strengthen the core assertion in the check using `shown` to verify that the
buffer retains at least all 300 replayed lines, while preserving the existing
scrollback and viewport assertions.
Cover alternate-screen wheel routing against the main-buffer viewport.
Cover alternate-screen wheel routing against the main-buffer viewport.
The wheel check runs only while the main screen is active. Nothing in scripts/core-history-scroll-demo-regression.ts enables the alternate screen. A change that let the wheel scroll main-screen history during an alternate-screen program would not fail this script.
The existing probe cannot detect that change. After \x1b[?1049h, term.buffer.active is the alternate buffer. That buffer has no scrollback, so its viewportY and baseY stay at 0. An assertion on those values cannot fail.
Read the main buffer instead:
Add term.buffer.normal.viewportY, term.buffer.normal.baseY, and term.buffer.active.type to the test-hook probe.
In the core branch only, write \x1b[?1049h. Wheel the pane, then assert that the normal buffer's viewportY is unchanged. Also assert that buffer.active.type is "alternate".
Write \x1b[?1049l to return to the main screen. Assert that the normal buffer's values match the values from before the alternate-screen switch.
The herdr kind keeps scrollback: 0, so this case does not apply there.

Extend the test-hook probe to expose the normal buffer’s viewportY and baseY
plus the active buffer type, then update the core branch of the wheel regression
to switch to the alternate screen, wheel the pane, and verify normal-buffer
viewportY is unchanged and the active type is alternate. Switch back and verify
the normal buffer values match their pre-switch values; leave the herdr case
unchanged because it has no scrollback.
Wait for a replay-only signal before comparing history lengths.
Wait for a replay-only signal before comparing history lengths.
The HIST-300 wait after replay() resolves immediately, because that text is already on screen from the first paint. A dropped replay leaves the buffer unchanged, so the length comparison still passes.
Have the replay path write a marker that the initial paint does not contain. Wait for that marker before reading history. The animation-frame wait in settled does not wait for xterm writes, so it cannot serve as this signal.

Update the replay flow around window.historyFixture.replay() to emit a marker
absent from the initial paint, then wait for that replay-only marker before
calling history(page). Do not rely on the existing HIST-300 text or
settled(page) as evidence that xterm processed the replay.
Merge-pass review of 0077004 (our own repros, plus Codex Terra at xhigh effort), thanks @lutvzn. Herdr mode is byte-for-byte unchanged, and old/new client and server mixes work. A fresh attach or a tab return doesn't double the history, and hc 0.1.14 accepts history: 2000. check fast passes, as do the new browser script (PASS core, PASS herdr) and the live hc contract test (13/13). Two MEDIUMs reproduce, both with small fixes:
A client that joins or reconnects to a live attachment doubles the history (server/core/terminals.ts:358-367, terminal-process.ts:16). A real hc 0.1.14 history attach sent about 180 KB. A joining client gets only the last 128 KiB of the replay, with neither ED 3 nor ED 2 ahead of it, and the client doesn't reset xterm on reconnect. In a demo reconnect, the top of the history jumped from LINE-0972 to LINE-2380 and the buffer grew from 2029 to 2047 rows. Fix: put \x1b[3J\x1b[H\x1b[2J ahead of the replay in the join path for herdr-core attachments, and add a test where a second client joins after more than 128 KiB of history.
A features frame the page doesn't trust yet turns history off (src/lib/ws.ts:837, useTerminalMount.ts:1025/1169). Until the page trusts the frame, syncHistory sets scrollback to 0, trimming kept history, so history bytes that arrive before the snapshot are lost. Fix: read terminal-history from every features frame, and never lower scrollback before the snapshot. Add a test: an untrusted features frame, then output, still reports history on.
LOW, no change needed for merge: in OmO question mode on herdr-core the wheel still goes to an unsupported scroll API (main does the same); a read-only viewer's swipe can't reach the history; the new script's phone-refit loop uses waitForTimeout and falls through silently, so waiting on the output probe's write counters would be better; each attach sends about 180 KB, also to old clients that discard it, bounded by hc's credit window.
For the owner: this adds an exception to AGENTS.md's "keep xterm scrollback 0" rule and a ci-browser.sh line, so the merge waits for his go.
…istory single
Review fixes for devswha#2664:
- A client joining a shared herdr-core attachment gets the clear ahead of its bounded replay tail, so the history it already holds is not doubled.
- The clear leaves the alternate screen first (?1049l, ED 3, home, ED 2), so a reattach after a full-screen program exited clears the main buffer's history.
- terminal-history is read from every features frame, trusted or not, so the scrollback is not lowered before the snapshot and a replay ahead of it is kept.
- screenSecret scans the screen rows only, not 2,000 lines of history per output frame.
- Hermes stop detection reads the screen (baseY), not a scrolled-up view.
- A scrollback change refits only a tab in use; back() refits the others.
- The browser check asserts all 300 replayed lines are kept.
Verified first: with an isolated hc 0.1.17 core (own HC_SESSION, mkdtemp HOME/XDG) and a loopback Ovis server in headless Chromium, main never scrolls past the visible screen (LINE-0255..0300), while this branch scrolls back to LINE-0021 and keeps one copy of the history across a WebSocket reconnect. The new unit tests fail on main (5) and pass here; herdr mode keeps scrollback: 0 (PASS herdr).
Fixed (reproduced MEDIUMs from our omo and Codex reviews, plus CodeRabbit's two):
A joiner of a shared herdr-core attachment doubled the history: its bounded replay tail had lost the attach's ED 3. The clear now goes ahead of every core joiner's replay (terminals.ts, CoreAttachSession.replayPrefix); test in terminals.test.ts.
ED 3 hit the alternate screen when a reattach came after a full-screen program exited while disconnected, leaving the main buffer's old history to double. The clear is now ?1049l ED3 H ED2.
An untrusted features frame lowered scrollback to 0 before the snapshot, cutting a replay that came ahead of it. terminal-history is now read from every features frame (it decides drawing, not sending); test in ws.test.ts.
screenSecret scanned the whole buffer on every output frame (~2.6 ms/frame with 2,000 lines vs ~0.005 ms). It now scans the screen rows only; secretPrompt reads the bottom lines anyway.
Hermes stop detection read from viewportY, so a scrolled-up view read old lines; it reads from baseY now.
CodeRabbit: the scrollback refit only runs for a tab in use (back() refits the rest), and the browser check asserts all 300 replayed lines are kept.
LOW, not changed: the browser script's phone-refit loop uses waitForTimeout and falls through silently; in OmO question mode on herdr-core the wheel still goes to the unsupported scroll API (as on main); a read-only viewer's swipe can't reach the history; each attach sends up to ~180 KB of history, bounded by hc's credit window.
Validation: bun run check fast passed on d454195 (10,886 unit tests, typecheck, build); bun scripts/core-history-scroll-demo-regression.ts prints PASS core and PASS herdr; the real-hc repro above was rerun on d454195. The earlier red "Browser regression (other scripts)" was chat-selection-turn-end-demo-regression.ts, which this PR doesn't touch (main is green at the same base).
…reen tail
The joiner prefix left the alternate screen ahead of a tail that switches back to it, and xterm blanks that screen on entry: a full-screen program's static rows were lost for a viewer rejoining after more than 128 KiB of updates. The prefix now goes only ahead of a truncated tail that starts on the main screen (ReplayBuffer.alternateScreen); an untruncated tail already starts with the attach's own clear. The browser check's fixture uses the real CLEAR_HISTORY bytes.
Second fix round pushed as the commit after d454195 (our omo re-review of d454195, reproduced by it and Codex in headless xterm 6):
MEDIUM, fixed: the joiner prefix from d454195 began with ?1049l, so a viewer rejoining a full-screen program after more than 128 KiB of updates got a replay that left and re-entered the alternate screen, and xterm blanks it on entry (static rows such as a title went blank). The clear now goes only ahead of a truncated tail that starts on the main screen (ReplayBuffer.alternateScreen); an untruncated tail already begins with the attach's own clear. terminals.test.ts covers a whole stream, a cut main-screen tail and a cut alternate-screen tail (2 of the 3 fail without the fix).
LOW, fixed: the browser check's fixture now sends the real CLEAR_HISTORY bytes (?1049l ED3 H ED2).
LOW, left as is (no regression from main): reattaching while a full-screen program runs and then quitting it leaves the shell's history empty (hc replays history only on the main screen); with a grid adopted at another device's size, a phone swipe pans instead of scrolling the history; native history scrolling ignores the wheel-speed setting.
Validation: bun run check fast passed (10,888 unit tests, typecheck, build); bun scripts/core-history-scroll-demo-regression.ts: PASS core, PASS herdr.
…history
The joiner prefix also erased the screen (ED 2), and a cut tail of in-place updates never draws the rows that did not change: a returning viewer lost them (hc has no repaint). A joiner now gets ?1049l and ED 3 only, so its scrollback is emptied once and the screen stays.
Third and last fix round, 272d52b: the final omo review of 97344e0 reproduced (headless xterm 6, real ReplayBuffer) that the joiner prefix from round 2 also erased the screen (ED 2), so a viewer rejoining after more than 128 KiB of in-place main-screen updates lost the rows those updates never redraw (hc has no repaint). That was a regression of our own fix, so it is fixed even though it goes past the planned rounds: a joiner now gets ?1049l ED3 only (CLEAR_JOINER_HISTORY), its scrollback emptied once and its screen kept; terminals.test.ts asserts it. A fresh attach still sends the full CLEAR_HISTORY.
Left as notes, not regressions from main (main has no herdr-core history at all): a phone in observe mode with an adopted grid pans instead of swiping the history; caret/IME rows use cursorY without the scroll offset while the history is scrolled up; a cut alternate-screen tail leaves the joiner's older main-screen history in place (stale, not doubled); the browser script's phone-refit loop polls with waitForTimeout.
bun run check fast passed on 272d52b (10,888 unit tests, typecheck, build).
omo review of 272d52b: CLEAR, no HIGH (Codex Terra at xhigh effort ran inside it). Three unreproduced notes, none a regression from main (main keeps no herdr-core history), left as follow-ups rather than changed here:
Reattaching while a full-screen program runs clears the kept history; after quitting it, the shell's earlier history is gone until new output (hc replays history on the main screen only).
A viewer joining a shared attachment after more than 128 KiB of in-place updates gets no history from the cut tail (the 128 KiB replay cap is in the PR's Limits).
With an adopted grid (observe mode), a phone swipe pans the grid and never reaches the local history; a desktop wheel still scrolls it.
CodeRabbit reviewed 0077004 (both of its threads are answered and resolved), but its check shows "skipping" for the maintainer pushes d454195, 97344e0 and 272d52b, so no CodeRabbit review covers them. We did not wait for one: the omo review with Codex Terra (xhigh) stands in, and it is CLEAR at 272d52b (findings and resolutions in the comments above).
…he alternate screen
A joiner's cut tail that started on the alternate screen got no clear, and when the program exited inside the tail the shell's lines after it were printed again into the history the joiner kept. The clear now goes where the tail leaves that screen, in place of its first ?1049l, so those lines land once and the restored alternate screen is not blanked.
Merged main (with #2684 and #2693) as bdd27f6, then one more fix, 64adc6d: omo review of bdd27f6 reproduced (real ReplayBuffer, headless xterm) that a joiner's cut tail that starts on the alternate screen and then leaves it got no clear, so the shell's lines after the program exited were printed again into the history a reconnecting viewer kept. The clear (?1049l ED3) now goes where the tail leaves that screen, in place of its first ?1049l; terminals.test.ts has the case (fails without the fix).
omo review (with Codex Terra, xhigh) of 64adc6d: CLEAR. LOW notes, not regressions from main, left as follow-ups:
A cut tail that stays on the alternate screen adds no clear, so a returning viewer keeps its older main-screen history (stale, not doubled) when the program exits.
While an OmO question is open, the wheel and a swipe go to herdr's pane.scroll, which herdr-core answers unsupported, so they don't scroll the local history.
bun run check fast passed on 64adc6d (10,951 unit tests, typecheck, build).
Merged main (with #2672, machine events on the terminal WebSocket) as 87d1d38. The conflicts in server/core/socket.ts, shared/protocol.ts and src/lib/ws.ts keep both features: the server now adds terminal-history (herdr-core) and machine-events (when the client asked) to the same list, and the client reads both from every features frame. bun run check fast passed (11,020 unit tests).
omo review (with Codex Terra, xhigh) of 87d1d38: CLEAR, no HIGH. LOW notes, each falling back to main's no-history behaviour, left as follow-ups:
A joiner whose cut tail holds only in-place redraws (more than 128 KiB with no new lines) has its kept history cleared and gets none back.
A joiner that returns while a full-screen program still runs gets no clear; once the program exits, its kept history skips the lines written while it was away.
The clear is placed at the literal \x1b[?1049l; a combined mode sequence such as \x1b[?1049;1000l would not get it.
The lasting fix for the first two is a fresh hc terminal.attach with history for a joiner whose tail was cut.
Merge note: CodeRabbit reviewed 0077004 and skipped later pushes; merged on the omo review (CLEAR receipt at 87d1d38, after the main merge with #2672), Codex Terra (no HIGH), our isolated hc 0.1.17 reproduction (main: no history; PR: scrolls back, no doubling across reconnects) and green required checks. Thanks @lutvzn! Fixes #2663 and #2633 (the adopted-grid swipe case is a known limit, see the PR body).

Change
Fixes #2663.
Fixes #2633 (same root cause: herdr-core has no viewport to scroll, so the Terminal view had no history).
Problem. On herdr-core (
OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core) a pane's Terminal view cannot scroll back; the Chat view of the same pane scrolls normally. xterm runs withscrollback: 0as it does on herdr, where herdr's TUI owns the history andpane.scrollmoves its viewport. hc has no viewport to scroll: it has no scroll method at all (the adapter answerspane.scrollwithunsupported), so every line that left the top of the screen was gone, and the wheel, a swipe and the scroll buttons had nothing to move.Fix. On herdr-core the browser keeps the history, as any terminal emulator does:
CoreAttachSessionattaches with hc'shistory: TERMINAL_HISTORY_LINES(2,000,shared/terminal-flow.ts), the same replayhc attach --historyshows: the terminal's last lines, with their colours and rewrapped to the viewer's width, ahead of the screen. The first output of each attach starts with ED 3, so a reconnect or a tab coming back replaces the history it already holds instead of doubling it (hc sends no ED 3 or RIS itself).terminal-historyfeature in itsfeaturesframe and first snapshot (shared/protocol.ts); herdr's server does not, so nothing changes there.HerdrSocket.hasTerminalHistory()reads it, anduseTerminalMountsets xterm's scrollback to 2,000 lines while it holds (back to 0 on a reconnect to a herdr server), refitting because the fit leaves xterm's scrollbar a column.term.scrollLines, because the synthetic wheels it dispatches otherwise land past xterm's viewport and come out as arrow keys. Both only apply on the main screen with mouse reporting off: a program that reads the mouse or uses the alternate screen (vim, less, an agent's fullscreen TUI) still gets the wheel, as before.Design followed. VS Code's integrated terminal (xterm.js with its own scrollback) and Zed's terminal: the emulator keeps the lines that scroll off. It differs from herdr only because hc keeps no viewport a client could move. A separate history view built from
terminal.readwas rejected: that read is plain text without colours, and hc has no paged or revisioned reads to keep such a view consistent with the stream.Limits.
hc attach --history.Docs:
docs/guide.md(herdr-core section),DESIGN.md(terminal host),AGENTS.md(scrollback trap),docs/development.md(new browser check), andchangelog.d/herdr-core-terminal-scrollback.md.This touches the WS contract (a new
ServerFeaturevalue), so it waits for a real review per AGENTS.md.Validation

Facts checked against hc 0.1.17 that the code relies on, so they need not be rediscovered:
