fix(sidebar): cache finish scopes of PCs with none and drop unused finish-index code (#1539) - #2183
Closes#1539, the follow-ups from the merge pass's review of #1536. I re-checked each item against main 97f957b:
Code kept for no current use (src/lib/seenFinishes.ts, src/lib/sidebarActivity.tsx), removed:
hydrate()'s if (!refreshing) ... stored = false loop. Every path that marks the index unhydrated without a refresh (first load, a different storage, a storage clear event, the last subscriber leaving) empties records first, so the loop never had anything to reset.
cleanSeen() with no arguments, which forced a fresh storage snapshot. Only a test called it, and hydrate() already removes old-format and over-limit keys. retired is now required, and that test reaches the same cleanup through loadSeen().
The epochs map's LRU capped at SEEN_LIMIT. The map is keyed by machine ID (one entry per PC in the roster), so it is now a plain set.
Past 2,000 records, an old read finish turns unread while you watch. This is kept on purpose (agreed with Dori), and a comment on trimRecords() now says so. It takes 2,000 other panes read since that one. Keeping evicted records for the page's life would bring back the per-update merge that fix(sidebar): cache read finishes and bound acknowledgement history #1536 removed. After a reload the finish shows unread anyway, as it did before.
A failed share is not retried if the answer fingerprint changes before the retry: already fixed by fix(sidebar): retry read-finish shares after transient errors and a fixed sign-in #1747, which made retries timer-driven. A same-ID entry keeps its pending retry, and a newly read answer replaces the entry with one that waits for the same timer. On current main a same-ID fingerprint can only go from "none" to an answer: Codex re-dating is accepted without changing the remembered answer. A new test pins that this retry happens once and carries the answer.
A PC with no finishes is not cached:recordFor() now caches the empty record as well, so each roster update no longer walks up to 2,000 records for such a PC. The empty record is invalidated wherever a non-empty one is: cacheChange on a new ID, trimRecords, hydrate, storage events, storage loss and the last unsubscribe. cleanSeen() also drops retired scopes from that cache. The audit doc no longer cites a /tmp path for its disposable harness.
No visual change, no new setting, and no change to the HTTP/WebSocket contract or the stored record format. Design precedent: none in the UI; this is internal bookkeeping.
Validation
New seenFinishes.test.ts case "walks the index once for a PC with no finishes, and sees the first finish written for it". It failed on main (Map.prototype.values called once on a repeated empty lookup) and passes now. It also checks that the first saveSeen and receiveSeen into that scope show up.
New hook case "retries a failed share once, with the answer fingerprint that arrived before the retry". It passes on main and after. It fails when the retry is dropped while a backoff timer is pending (mutation checked, then restored).
New hook case "does not cache a retired epoch's scope again while it retires" (the Codex review's one LOW). Without the second commit, cleanSeen()'s notification ran the subscriber's state update at once, and that update read the retired epoch and cached its scope again: one entry per epoch change until the last subscriber left. No dot was wrong. The fix records the new epoch before cleanSeen() and makes the subscriber skip an epoch that is no longer the PC's current one. This test failed before that fix and passes now.
bun test src/lib/seenFinishes.test.ts src/lib/sidebarActivity.hook.test.ts src/lib/panePresentation.test.ts: 78 pass, 0 fail.
bun run check fast on the head: passes (workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build, 7929 unit tests with 0 failures).
bun run check run --build bun scripts/sidebar-activity-demo-regression.ts on the head: 44 scenarios pass, 0 fail.
Reviews: omo-native-code-reviewer PASS on the first commit (three LOW notes, none needing a change). Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh found one LOW (the retired-scope entry above), and its re-review of the fix passed with no findings.
The items above were re-checked against main 97f957b; the three commits main gained since touch none of these files.
…nish-index code
Part of #1539: a PC with no read finishes walked the whole index on every
roster update; hydrate's stored reset, cleanSeen()'s global refresh and the
epochs LRU had no current use. Eviction past SEEN_LIMIT is documented as
deliberate, and a test pins that a failed share retried after its answer
fingerprint arrived carries it. The audit no longer cites a /tmp path.
cleanSeen()'s notification ran the subscriber's state update at once, which
read the retired epoch and cached its scope again: one entry per epoch change
until the last subscriber left (Codex review of a8f23a4). Record the new epoch
first and skip epochs that are no longer a PC's current one.

Summary
Seen-finish cache and cleanup src/lib/seenFinishes.ts, src/lib/seenFinishes.test.ts, changelog.d/finish-index-followups.md, docs/performance-audit-2026-10-21.md
Empty scopes are cached, non-refresh hydration no longer resets stored flags, and cleanup requires retired scopes. Tests cover repeated empty lookups and subsequent saved or received finishes. The changelog and audit reproduction notes are updated.
Sidebar sharing and epoch handling src/lib/sidebarActivity.tsx, src/lib/sidebarActivity.hook.test.ts
The subscriber filters notifications by the machine’s tracked epoch, and the effect records the current epoch before cleaning retired data. Tests cover answer evidence arriving before a share retry, epoch changes, and cleanup through loadSeen.
devswha/ovis#1802: Changes which answer evidence sidebarActivity.tsx accepts and saves or shares for a finish, connecting to the answer-evidence retry test here.

Explanation
Each changed file maps to an objective of #1539:
src/lib/seenFinishes.ts: removes dead code (items 1 and 3). Adds the eviction comment (item 2). Caches the empty record in recordFor() (item 3). cleanSeen() drops retired scopes from scopeRecords so a retired scope is not cached again.
src/lib/sidebarActivity.tsx: removes the epochs LRU (item 1). The retired-epoch guard in the subscriber and the reordering of epochs.current.set before cleanSeen() prevent a retiring scope from being cached again. This follows the same epoch-map code the issue targets.
src/lib/seenFinishes.test.ts and src/lib/sidebarActivity.hook.test.ts: tests for empty-scope caching, the share retry, and retired-scope handling. The loadSeen-based cleanup test replaces the removed cleanSeen() no-argument call.
docs/performance-audit-2026-10-21.md: item 6. The reworded evidence paragraph is in the same reproduction-notes section and matches the removed /tmp reference.
changelog.d/finish-index-followups.md: a maintenance note for the same cleanup, per the changelog summary.
I found no change unrelated to #1539. The changelog entry and the retired-scope guard are not named in the issue text, but each describes a change in this PR.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #1539 has six coding objectives. Status for each:
Unused code [#1539]: Met. In src/lib/seenFinishes.ts, the hydrate() loop that resets stored flags when not refreshing is removed. cleanSeen() now requires the retired argument, and its no-argument full-snapshot path is removed. In src/lib/sidebarActivity.tsx, the epochs map LRU capped at SEEN_LIMIT is replaced by a plain set. The issue states that the loop never runs on a non-empty cache. The diff does not re-prove the empty-records invariant, but the issue text supports it.
Eviction past 2,000 records [#1539]: Met by the option the issue allows ("say so"). The trimRecords() comment documents that an evicted read finish shows unread again while the page stays open.
PC with no finishes not cached [#1539]: Met in code. recordFor() now stores emptyRecord in scopeRecords. Invalidation depends on existing paths (cacheChange, trimRecords, hydrate, storage events, last unsubscribe) that this diff does not change. I did not re-read those paths.
Stale cache with no subscriber [#1539]: Not established. This diff does not change the unmounted receiveSeen or cache path. The PR states that #1797 fixed it on main 97f957b. A reference to another PR is not evidence of base code behavior. I did not inspect that path at the merge base.
Failed share not retried after fingerprint change [#1539]: Not established from this diff. The diff adds a hook test ("retries a failed share once, with the answer fingerprint that arrived before the retry"). The PR states that it passes on main, but I did not read the test or the base retry code. The diff has no retry code change. The PR attributes the fix to #1747.
Objectives 1, 2, 3, and 6 have code or documentation evidence in the diff. Objectives 4 and 5 depend on base-side behavior that this review did not establish.
Resolution
Provide base-side evidence for two objectives, read at merge base 97f957b:
(a) Stale cache: the receiveSeen or saveSeen path while no subscriber is mounted. Show that a finish written after another tab deletes the storage key, or after storage is cleared in the same tab, is written and remains visible. Cite the code that does this, or a test that fails on base for this case.
(b) Retry: the hook path that retries a failed share when the answer fingerprint changes before the retry timer fires. Show that the retry runs once and carries the new answer. Cite the code, or confirm that the new hook test "retries a failed share once, with the answer fingerprint that arrived before the retry" passes against base.

Merging 3e31d13 (75ab4a0 reviewed; 3e31d13 only edits the audit doc): omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex both pass this head. The new cache tests fail on main, and six adversarial probes found no stale empty scope: a PC's first finish still shows its DONE dot. The required checks are green, and CodeRabbit did not review this head. A test-style MEDIUM (the cache tests patch Map.prototype) and a LOW (departed PCs stay in memory) go to a follow-up issue.
