fix(chat): keep a turn's words and tools in the agent's order - #2060
Chat could show a turn's tool calls above words the agent wrote before them, unlike the terminal.
In the reported OmO turn, one assistant message held thinking | text | toolCall and two more
calls followed. The terminal shows the text first, but Chat showed "Working… · 2 commands" with
both commands above that text.
Cause: splitTurn (src/lib/workBlocks.ts) splits a turn into all of its work and all of its
answer text, and Turn (src/components/ChatView.tsx) drew one work block above every answer.
Since #1780, unphased text before a tool call stays visible as answer text (not folded into work),
so it was drawn below every tool of the turn. The bug is not tied to one harness: Claude, pi/OmO,
omp and gjc all write unphased text before tools. Codex's commentary text stays inside work, so
Codex turns mostly looked right. It showed up only "sometimes" because only turns whose text
comes before a tool are affected.
Now a turn is drawn as ordered runs (turnSegments): each run of work between two answers gets
its own work block, so text and tools keep the agent's order, live and after reload. The order
follows the Claude app, which interleaves prose with its tool groups. The work-line grouping is
unchanged:
A turn with only tools and then an answer still has one Worked for 7s · N commands block
above the answer.
When a turn has several runs, its last run that draws a row is the head. It reads Working…/Needs you while the turn runs and carries the turn's duration once settled. The
runs before it read Worked, so there is still one Working at a time.
Folding is unchanged: blocks are open while live and folded once settled. The final run stays
open when commentary comes after the last answer.
Row open state is keyed by the part's index in the turn, so rows in different blocks never
share state.
No external code was adapted.
Validation
server/turn-order.test.ts parses an OmO/pi transcript with the reported record shape and a
Claude turn that talks between tools, then checks the drawn order. src/lib/workBlocks.test.ts
covers turnSegments. On main both fail.
scripts/chat-fallback-browser-qa.ts (Integration and browser lane) renders the real ChatView.
On this branch it shows ["I read this as: …", "work Worked · 3 commands", "The test server …"],
the Claude turn in five ordered rows, and, with the agent working, only the last run reading Working…. On main the same script fails with ["work Worked · 3 commands", "I read this as: …", …], which is the reported bug.

A running turn with no work yet keeps its Working head. Blocks and rows are named by their parts' indices in the turn, so a run that splits keeps every fold. Todo groups are found once per turn. While the turn runs only the head opens. src/components/ChatTurn.test.ts renders Turn for these cases; the browser QA adds a run-split check. Details are in the review-resolution comment.
A turn drew one work block for all of its tools above all of its answer
text, so words an agent wrote before a tool call (unphased text, kept
visible since #1780) landed below every command, unlike the terminal.
Draw the turn as ordered runs instead (turnSegments): each run of work
between two answers is its own block. The last run that draws a row is
the turn's head, so it alone reads Working… and carries the duration.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Chat now displays assistant text and tool activity in the order they occurred, including replies between tool calls. Text written before a tool call no longer appears beneath each command.
During an active turn, only the latest work block is shown as in progress; earlier blocks appear settled. Consecutive tool activities remain grouped together, and the final response appears after the work that preceded it.
Assistant turn content is split into ordered answer and work runs. ChatView renders the runs in sequence and assigns live state to the final work block. Tests and browser QA cover transcript ordering and live-block behavior.

Review of the ordered work runs:
- A running turn with no work and no words yet drew no Working head:
its stand-in block was never the head. It is again, keyed as the
run that will take its place.
- A block and its rows are named by the run's first part, not by the
run's position, so a run that splits no longer hands its fold or
open rows to another block.
- Todo groups and part indices are found once per turn, not once per
block.
- While the turn runs only the head opens by default; the runs before
it are settled.
H1 / Codex fix(server): share one pty when clients attach the same pane concurrently #2 / CodeRabbit (ChatView.tsx:1070), a running turn with no work and no words yet lost "Working…". Fixed: the stand-in block is now the head (run === null || run === head). It is keyed as the run that will start at the next part, so the first real run takes its place as the same block, as on main.
src/components/ChatTurn.test.ts renders Turn with [] and [text("\n\n")] while live and expects the pending "Working…" head. On 5c9d18d (with only export added) it gets <article class="chat-turn chat-turn-agent"></article>.
Fixed in the same push
Codex M-a, a run that splits moved its fold or open rows to another block. Fixed:
Blocks are now keyed and remembered by their run's first part index in the turn (TurnSegment.start), not by segment position.
Rows are keyed by part index.
New browser check in scripts/chat-fallback-browser-qa.ts: live [A, "", B, "Shelf b next.", C], fold C, then turn "" into words. On 5c9d18d that gives [true, false, true] (C reopens and B inherits the fold); now it is [false, false, false].
Codex M-b, every block rescanned the whole turn. Fixed: turnWork() finds todo groups, grouped membership and part indices once per turn, and every block reads them.
CodeRabbit (ChatView.tsx:1073), earlier runs opened while the turn runs. Fixed: only the head opens by default while live, because the runs before it are settled. Reader choices are kept as before. ChatTurn.test.ts checks [false, true] live and [false, false] settled. The browser check covers it too.
M1, Turn had no render test. ChatTurn.test.ts covers:
settled Worked / Worked for 1m
live Worked / Working…
waiting Worked / Needs you
one block for tools then answer
the empty live turn
L3: the special "work" key is gone; every block uses work:<start>.
Kept as designed (DESIGN.md says so now)
L1: the duration is the whole turn's and sits on its last block, even when the agent ran tools after its answer and that block sits under it. This matches the terminal's order.
L2: a run before the head has the agent's words after it, so it is settled while the turn still runs: it reads Worked, folds, and its narration is quiet. This is consistent with the fold above.

## Change
Fixes#2063 (the MEDIUM follow-up from the merge-pass review of #2060).
A work block the reader folded opened again when the words before its
tools joined its run: a
later Codex record marks unphased text `phase: "commentary"`, or a blank
leading commentary gets
its text. `Turn` (`src/components/ChatView.tsx`) keyed each block, and
its fold memory, by the
index of the run's first part (`work:<start>`). When the words joined,
`start` moved, so the
React key and the memory key both changed and the block came back open.
Now a run keeps its name while its parts change. `runNames`
(`src/lib/workBlocks.ts`) gives each
run the name its parts' run had the last time the turn was drawn. The
earliest run claims a name
first, which keeps #2060's rule that the earlier half of a split keeps
the name. Only a run with
no name gets `work:<start>`, and never a name a shown run holds. The
row's memory
(`ChatRowMemory.runs`, part index → name) records the names at commit,
so they also survive the
row scrolling out of the virtual list and back.
Design: no new UI. This extends the fold contract that #2060 set for
runs that split to runs that
grow or shrink at either end (#2060's runs follow the Claude app's
interleaved tool groups): a
block keeps the fold the reader gave it.
Not changed: the LOW items in #2063 (the stand-in's handover to the
first real run, which has no
visible effect).
## Tests
- `src/components/ChatTurn.test.ts`, stateful `react-test-renderer`
cases with a row memory:
- The issue's reproduction folds a live `[text, tool]` run, then redraws
it with the text
marked commentary, and also with a blank commentary filled in. The block
stays folded, and
stays folded again after a remount from the same memory. Fails on main.
- Codex review case: `[tool, answer, commentary]`. The answer becomes
commentary, so the runs
merge, and the reader folds the merged block. Then the last part becomes
the answer, and the
block stays folded. Main passes it; the first commit of this PR failed
it.
- `src/lib/workBlocks.test.ts`: `runNames` keeps a name while parts
change, gives a split run's
first part the old name, and never hands a shown name to a new run.
- `scripts/chat-fallback-browser-qa.ts`: the issue's reproduction in the
real ChatView. On main's
ChatView it fails at "words that join the run keep it folded"
(`[true]`); here the whole script
passes.
- `bun run check fast`: green (7723 unit tests).
Found along the way, also on main: a conversation without a `history_id`
keeps its row slots by
position when its turns are replaced (`ChatView.tsx` `showAnswer`), so a
row's memory goes to the
next turn shown at that position. The QA scenario places its turn on a
row with no memory.
## Reviews
- omo-native-code-reviewer on 8fb4784: PASS, LOW notes only. One LOW
said a fold was still lost when words left a run again; the second
commit covers that case.
- Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh on 8fb4784: MEDIUM, a merged block lost its
fold when its remembered part left the run (reproduced: it passes on
main and fails on 8fb4784). Fixed in 439678c (`runNames`); the case is
now the second ChatTurn test.
- Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh, final round on 8fb4784..439678c: PASS. The
MEDIUM is fixed, with no new CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM. It also checked
splits, name collisions, StrictMode, uncommitted renders, and rendering
without a memory provider.
