What it fixes

In Ovis for Mac's window, the terminal drew Korean larger than its cells, so each syllable ran into its neighbours, and rows sat over each other. The same page looked right in Safari and Chrome. It happens on a Mac that has fonts such as JetBrains Mono or D2Coding installed, which the owner's Mac has (the screenshot shows both).

Why

The app's window is a WKWebView. There WebKit draws text in a font the user installed, but its canvas (measureText, also OffscreenCanvas) only sees the system's fonts. Safari hides installed fonts from both, and Chromium shows them to both, so only the app measures in one font and draws in another:

  • xterm 5.5 sizes its cells from a canvas (CharSizeService, TextMetricsMeasureStrategy): Menlo's cell and row height, under glyphs drawn in JetBrains Mono, so rows were too short for their glyphs.
  • lib/terminalGlyphs.ts fits wide glyphs with a canvas measure: Hangul measured as Apple SD Gothic Neo (11.24px at 13px) but drawn in D2Coding (13px), so each syllable was enlarged 1.112x instead of 1.081x and drifted 0.2px per syllable past its two cells.

The change

measurableFontStack (src/lib/fontFamily.ts) leaves out of the terminal's font stack every family the page draws but its canvas cannot measure. It compares a probe text's width in "<family>, monospace" and "<family>, serif" against the fallback alone, once by the DOM and once by the canvas, and keeps the bundled icon font and generic families. The measurements are made once per page. The stack goes through it where xterm gets its font: at mount (useTerminalMount.ts) and when the font setting changes (useTerminalRefits.ts).

In the app the terminal now draws what Safari draws (Menlo and Apple SD Gothic Neo). Where the canvas and the page agree (Chromium, Safari, Firefox, the phone apps), nothing changes.

It follows Zed and Warp, whose terminals size a cell with the font that draws it. VS Code's xterm.js terminal, the nearest web one, never meets the case: in Electron the canvas and the page see the same installed fonts. A WKWebView's canvas cannot, so here the font is dropped rather than measured. No external code was adapted.

Verification

On the test MacBook Air (macOS 27.0.1), in a fresh clone with an isolated herdr session and test server, a pane printed Korean, mixed Korean and English, emoji, box drawing, bold and inverse lines. JetBrains Mono and D2Coding were installed for the test, then removed.

Surface Before After
WKWebView with the app's configuration (WebPage.swift, same user agent), snapshot from inside cell 7.8px, Hangul canvas 11.24 vs DOM 13px, fit 1.112x, rows overlap cell 7.827px, Hangul canvas 11.24 = DOM 11.25px, fit 1.2x inside two cells; terminal region pixel-identical to the Safari-policy view
Chrome (headless, CDP screenshot) canvas = DOM, fit 1.081x, correct pixel-identical to before
Safari (real, File > Export as PDF) correct correct, same rendering as the app

Without installed fonts the app, Safari and Chrome already rendered alike, before and after.

  • bun test src/lib/fontFamily.test.ts: 14 pass. The new cases fail on the old fontFamily.ts, and fail again when the filter is made to keep every family.
  • bun run check fast: passed (typecheck, build, 6772 unit tests).
  • Review by Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): APPROVE, no HIGH or MEDIUM. Two LOW notes, left as they are: a font installed while the page is open is classified at the next load (as xterm itself only measures again on a font change), and a symbol-only font that covers none of the probe text is kept (it never sizes a cell, since xterm measures W).

Until this ships, Settings > Terminal > Font family Menlo, Apple SD Gothic Neo gives the fixed rendering in the app (checked on the unfixed build).

…ot measure

In Ovis for Mac's window (a WKWebView), WebKit draws text in a font the
user installed, while its canvas measures with the system's fonts only.
xterm sizes its cells from a canvas (TextMetrics) and lib/terminalGlyphs.ts
fits wide glyphs from one, so with JetBrains Mono and D2Coding installed
the grid was measured in Menlo and drawn in those fonts: rows too short for
their glyphs, and Hangul measured as Apple SD Gothic Neo (11.24px at 13px)
but drawn in D2Coding (13px) was enlarged 1.112x past its two cells.
Safari hides installed fonts from both, Chromium shows them to both, so
the browsers looked right.

measurableFontStack drops from the terminal's stack every family the page
draws but its canvas cannot measure, keeping the icon font and generic
families. The app then draws what Safari draws; Chromium and Safari keep
their stack unchanged.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved terminal font rendering on Mac when user-installed fonts cannot be measured correctly, helping prevent oversized or overlapping text. The terminal falls back to system fonts in these cases.

The terminal now filters font families that the page can draw but the canvas cannot measure. Initial terminal setup and later font updates use the filtered stack. Tests cover filtering behavior and cases where the stack remains unchanged.

Merge pass review-work report. Overall: PASSED. This is an ordinary client fix, gated by Codex Sol, an omo code reviewer and the merge pass's checks.

Lane Verdict
Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) APPROVE
Code review (omo-native-code-reviewer) PASS (no HIGH or MEDIUM findings)

measurableFontStack drops a family only when the DOM measures it and the canvas can't. The DOM is compared with the DOM and the canvas with the canvas, so the small differences between the two measurers can't cause a drop.

  • Fonts kept: a web font that is still loading, and a font with the same metrics as the fallback, look like the fallback on both sides, so they are kept.
  • Icon font and generic families: the bundled icon font is checked first and never measured. Generic families are kept.
  • Font setting changes: results are stored per family name, so a new font setting is measured afresh.
  • xterm: it gets the filtered stack at mount and on refit. The glyph fit reads the same value.
  • Tests: 14 pass. Breaking the fix in four different ways makes 1 to 3 of them fail each time.

LOW follow-ups:

  • No test covers the rule that keeps generic families.
  • A font typed into Settings in the Mac app is now ignored, while the Settings preview still shows it.
  • A font with none of the probe's characters can still draw at the wrong size.

c5c18be (DESIGN.md only): addresses the precedent LOW. It names Zed and Warp, whose terminals size a cell with the font that draws it. It also notes that VS Code's xterm.js never hits this case, because Electron's canvas and page see the same fonts.

…Latin (#2062)

## What it fixes

In Ovis for Mac's window the terminal still drew Korean in a face that
does not match its Latin text: Menlo beside Apple SD Gothic Neo, a
proportional sans in another weight. #1942 fixed the overlap there by
leaving out the installed fonts the app's canvas cannot measure
(JetBrains Mono, D2Coding), and the terminal's stack had no Hangul of
its own behind them, so Korean fell to the system's fallback. Safari
draws the same, and so does any browser on a device without a Korean
coding font (Malgun Gothic beside Consolas on Windows).

Reproduced on the test MacBook Air (macOS 27.0.1) in Ovis.app built from
main, with JetBrains Mono and D2Coding installed as on the owner's Mac,
on an isolated herdr session and test server.

## The change

- **A bundled Hangul coding face.**
`src/fonts/OvisHangulMono-{Regular,Bold}.woff2`: the 11,172 syllables
and 94 compatibility jamo of D2Coding 1.3.2 (NAVER, SIL OFL 1.1),
unhinted, 265 KB and 277 KB. The license reserves the names D2Coding and
D2Coding-Bold for the original, so the subset is renamed "Ovis Hangul
Mono" (name table rewritten; copyright, trademark and license entries
kept; notice in `THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md`). It is declared next to the
icon font in `PaneTerminal.css` with `unicode-range: U+3131-318E,
U+AC00-D7A3`: it holds no Latin, so it never sizes a cell, and a weight
is fetched only once Korean is drawn in it.
- **Its place in the terminal stack** (`lib/fontFamily.ts`): after the
Korean coding fonts a device may have (`D2Coding`, `Noto Sans Mono CJK
KR`), before the generic `monospace`. An installed Korean coding font
still wins wherever the browser can use it; Hangul that Menlo, Consolas
or a phone's monospace lacks is a coding face everywhere else.
`measurableFontStack` keeps it like the icon font: the canvas measures a
bundled face as the page draws it.
- **Measuring again when a late face arrives**
(`lib/terminalGlyphs.ts`). The first try drew Korean in the new face but
too wide in the app: WebKit fires no `loadingdone` for a face a
stylesheet loads, so the existing re-measure (written for the icon font)
never ran in Safari or the app, and the glyph fit kept the stand-in's
width (11.24 px against 13). Measured with a WKWebView in the app's
configuration, three things had to change:
- the glyph fit now asks for the faces a glyph it measured is still
waiting for (`document.fonts.check` / `load`, each family on its own:
WebKit checks and loads only the first family with a face for the glyph,
so a face with no `unicode-range` earlier in the list, such as a typed
"JetBrains Mono Web", hid the Hangul face), and measures again when the
load's own promise resolves;
- on arrival it redraws every row (`term.refresh`): xterm takes the
equivalent font family and measures again, but keeps the rows it drew
while the cell keeps its size, and only a redrawn row is fitted again;
- the face is `font-display: block`, as the icon font is: past a swap
face's short block period WebKit reports it as failed while it still
loads, and then nothing tells when it arrives.

The icon font goes through the same path, so in Safari and the app a
late Nerd Font no longer leaves icons sized for the stand-in either.

## Before and after (Ovis for Mac, real app on the test Mac)

![Before (main) and after (this branch) in Ovis for Mac on the test Mac,
JetBrains Mono and D2Coding installed: Latin in Menlo, Korean in Apple
SD Gothic Neo before and in the bundled coding face
after](https://gist.githubusercontent.com/devswha/316418b5ef093b5966bf076cc4f6c990/raw/0393b9056234410c5373aebafdfdcab7aa175a79/pr-before-after.png)

| | Hangul face | Hangul fit | `\|가나다라마바사\|` closing bar vs Latin row |
|---|---|---|---|
| main | Apple SD Gothic Neo | 1.2x (capped) | aligned |
| this branch | Ovis Hangul Mono (D2Coding) | 1.084x | 515.97 px vs 516
px |

Measured from inside a WKWebView with the app's configuration, three
runs each with an empty cache, so the face always arrives after the
first drawing. Every run: first measure 11.24 px while loading, the face
arrives about 120 ms later, measured again at 13 px, every row aligned.
Before the arrival fix, the same harness gave a 1.112x fit and a 1.75 px
drift over one row, or 1.2x when the late face came first.

## Other surfaces

- **Chrome (Linux, desktop 1200 px and phone 390 px)**: the grid is the
same as on main (858 px wide, 19 px rows, 35 rows; 31 at 390 px), Hangul
stays on its cells (closing bars 483.94 vs 484). This machine has Noto
Sans Mono CJK KR, which stays first, so nothing changes on screen. Such
a device still fetches the Hangul face once without drawing it (the
per-family check cannot know that an installed font covers the glyph).
- **Safari, iPhone, Android, Windows**: Korean without an installed
Korean coding font now comes from the bundled face instead of Apple SD
Gothic Neo, Noto Sans CJK or Malgun Gothic; Latin and the cell size are
untouched (the face has no Latin).

## JetBrains Mono Web, left out

The lead asked whether putting the bundled "JetBrains Mono Web" ahead in
the terminal stack makes Latin and Hangul one family in the app. It is
left out of this PR:

- **As shipped, the app cannot measure it on the owner's setup.** Its
`@font-face` starts with `local("JetBrains Mono Regular")`, which
resolves to the installed copy, and the app's canvas sees no installed
font (canvas W = 12.27 px, the default sans, against 7.8 px drawn).
`measurableFontStack` drops it like the installed copy; typed in
Settings it is dropped too (checked on this branch).
- **Without `local()` it becomes measurable** (canvas W = 7.80 px), and
typed in Settings it then draws JetBrains Mono with this branch's
Hangul, on a JetBrains grid and aligned (checked with a build that drops
`local()`).
- **As the default it changes every device's grid**: JetBrains Mono's
line metrics are taller than Menlo's, so the same pane at 13 px holds 39
rows instead of 44. The default mount also fits the grid before a
bundled face loads: with it first in the stack (built from this branch),
xterm measured 17 px rows once the face arrived, but the grid kept the
44 rows fitted for Menlo's 15 px, so the pane's last rows fell below its
bottom until something refit it (and the pty kept the old size). Making
it the default needs the mount to wait for the face, or refit and resize
the pty after it, a change of its own.

![This branch's default; JetBrains Mono Web first in the default stack;
JetBrains Mono Web typed in Settings without
local()](https://gist.githubusercontent.com/devswha/316418b5ef093b5966bf076cc4f6c990/raw/0393b9056234410c5373aebafdfdcab7aa175a79/pr-jetbrains.png)

Menlo with the bundled Hangul already reads as one monospace look. A
follow-up can drop `local()` so that "JetBrains Mono Web" in Settings
gives the owner's Chrome look (JetBrains Mono with D2Coding Hangul) in
the app.

## Known, not changed here

In an inverse row, a one-device-pixel dark seam can show at the right
edge of a Hangul run: the glyph fit's `clip-path` trim
(`terminalGlyphs.ts`, unchanged) lands on a fractional cell edge. It was
seen once in the sample (after the first `반전`, not the second). The trim
is the same on main, where the 1.2x fit happened to round without a
seam.

## Design reference

Zed and Warp size a cell with the font that draws it; VS Code's xterm.js
terminal falls back to the system's CJK font. This follows the coding
fonts made for Korean (D2Coding pairs two-cell Hangul with 0.5em Latin)
and ships one, because the app's canvas cannot measure the copy a user
installs. No external code was adapted; the font is credited in
`THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md`.

## Checks

- `bun test src/lib/fontFamily.test.ts src/lib/typography.test.ts
src/lib/terminalGlyphs.test.ts`: pass. New cases: the face's range holds
no Latin (fails when U+0020-007E is added to it), its files exist, its
place in the stack, and `measurableFontStack` keeps it (fails without
the keep).
- `bun run check fast`: pass (typecheck, build, 7664 unit tests, 0
fail).
- Not run on a Windows PC, an iPhone or an Android phone: there the
change is only the Hangul face behind the existing fonts; the grid is
checked unchanged in Chrome above.
- QA ran in a fresh clone in `/tmp` on the test Mac with an isolated
herdr session and test servers, the app opened with an empty home; the
fonts installed for the test were removed afterwards.

…ery device, so Mac app, Safari and Chrome match (#2272)

## What it changes

The owner saw Ovis for Mac and the PWA or web app look different. For
example, the terminal's Korean row count did not match between them.
This came out of the mac-pwa-parity measurements (the seam that report
also found is fixed separately in #2263).

Measured on the test MacBook Air with the same isolated test server, a
1200x760 viewport at 2x, 13px and light theme. The same measuring script
ran in Chrome 156, Safari 27 and a WKWebView with Ovis for Mac's
configuration:

- **With no coding font installed, the three already matched:** Menlo,
16.5px rows, DOM renderer, keystroke-to-paint about 33ms, about 60fps
under a Korean flood. No performance gap between the surfaces was
measurable.
- **With JetBrains Mono installed, they did not.**
- Chrome draws the installed copy, with 17px rows and 936px for 120
columns.
  - Safari hides installed fonts from pages, so it draws Menlo.
- Ovis for Mac draws Menlo too: its WKWebView draws installed fonts but
its canvas, which xterm measures with, cannot see them, so #1942 drops
them.
- Rows were therefore 17px against 16.5px. A 900px-tall pane held 52
rows in Chrome and 54 in the app.
- **The bundled "JetBrains Mono Web" face was dropped in the app too**
when JetBrains Mono was installed. Its `@font-face` read
`local("JetBrains Mono Regular")` first, so it resolved to the installed
copy.

Dori chose the option that makes every surface the same: the bundled
JetBrains Mono becomes the terminal's default Latin face on every
device. The owner did not pick an option, and he tests main before a
release.

## The change

- **The terminal's first text font is `"JetBrains Mono Web"`**
(`lib/fontFamily.ts`), ahead of the installed JetBrains Mono, Fira Code,
D2Coding, Menlo, Consolas and Noto Sans Mono CJK KR. Those now draw only
if the face does not load. A font typed in Settings still goes first.
The icon font and Ovis Hangul Mono keep their places.
- **The face comes from the bundled files only** (`fonts/fonts.css`): no
`local()` copy, which the app's canvas cannot measure, and a new
**bold** (`JetBrainsMono-Bold.woff2`, JetBrains Mono v2.304 unchanged)
so bold text is not synthesized. `measurableFontStack` always keeps the
face, as it keeps the bundled icon and Hangul faces.
- **The grid is measured from the face, never from a fallback.** xterm
measures its cell only when the family is set, so the terminal opens
without the face while it has not loaded (`openingFontStack`). The font
effect (`useTerminalRefits.ts`) then loads the stack and sets it whole,
exactly as for a font typed in Settings. If the face is slower than the
effect's 3s wait, it is set when it arrives (`monoFaceArrived`, which
waits on the face alone: the font set's load for a whole stack rejects
as soon as any one face fails). A face that arrives while two fingers
pinch keeps the pinch's live size, and the shared pty is sized once,
when the fingers lift (`pinchingRef`).
- **A new terminal's pane is attached only once its first font is set**
(`usePaneAttach.ts`, `fontSettled`). The font effect settles a shared
signal after its first apply, which `loadFontStack`'s existing 3s bound
already limits, and the first fit and `attach` wait for it. Before, a
cold load without an installed JetBrains Mono attached the pty at the
fallback's grid. On Linux that was Noto's 19px rows (169x42 in the merge
pass's run, 132x35 here). The pty was then resized again when the face
arrived (141x47, 110x39), so the program reflowed twice. Now the attach
goes out once, at the face's grid. A face slower than 3s still attaches
at the fallback's grid and is set when it comes, as before. Without
this, the terminal measured a fallback's cell, the face arrived, and
xterm re-measured without a refit. In the check below, the grid then ran
1030px wide in an 880px pane.
- **License:** `THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md` now lists both files under the
release's OFL 1.1 text (already included, identical to the release's
`OFL.txt`). `DESIGN.md` records the decision. Zed similarly draws its
terminal in a face it ships (`.ZedMono`).

## Every surface, measured (13px)

Rows are for the same 1200x760 window. The Hangul gap is the row minus
the Hangul ink (0.913em = 11.87px).

table) → JetBrains Mono Web | 19 → 17 | - | 6 → 5.1 | - | - |

*Safari's median moves between 33 and 49ms from run to run on both
builds; Chrome and the app do not.

At this window every Mac surface holds 40 rows, before and after. Rows
differed before only when the window height fell between 16.5px and 17px
steps (a 900px pane: 52 against 54). Now every surface has the same row,
so the counts match at any size. A pane on Linux gains rows (19 → 17px);
one on a Mac or on Windows with Consolas loses about 3% of them (16.5 →
17px). Windows and the iPhone were not measured in this PR.

**Bundle size:** +94,588 bytes (`JetBrainsMono-Bold.woff2`). The regular
face (92,164 bytes) was already shipped for the chat. A device now
fetches the regular face when the terminal opens (most pages already
fetched it for the chrome's code text), and the bold only when bold text
is drawn. Both are fingerprinted assets the service worker keeps.

(The light lines after Korean words in the dark rows are the seam #2263
fixes; this branch does not include it.)

## Checks

- **New browser check** `scripts/terminal-bundled-mono-regression.ts`
(added to `ci-browser.sh`). It holds the face's download until the
terminal has drawn its rows, so the face always arrives late, and checks
at 1x and 2x that:
  - the terminal opened without the face;
  - the cell is the face's advance (7.79 against 7.80px);
- the row is `terminalLineHeight`'s for the face (17px), with a Hangul
gap of 5.13px;
  - the grid fits its host again;
  - `|가나다라마바사|` closes on the Latin row's column.

It also checks the pty: when the face arrives within the font effect's
wait, the pane's `attach` frame carries the face's grid (110x39) and no
`resize` follows. A slow face sends one resize, for its grid. Frames are
counted only after a definite signal: the DOM change made in the same
task as the frame (the font family set, the pinch badge hidden) or the
attach frame itself. Nothing polls animation frames.

It also covers three late cases:
  - the face is slower than the font effect's wait;
- a font typed in Settings fails to load (404) while the face still
loads;
- the face arrives mid-pinch on a 390x844 touch screen, both when the
pinch grew the font (13 → 22px) and when it came back to the saved size.
The live size must hold, no resize may be sent while the fingers are
down, and exactly one must be sent when they lift.

  Results:
  - Passes here.
  - Fails on main: the face never becomes the terminal's.
- Fails on a mutant that opens with the face while it loads: the grid
stays 1030px wide in an 880px pane.
- Fails on a mutant that waits on the whole stack: the face never
applies after the typed font's 404.
- Fails on a mutant that ignores the pinch: the size snaps back to 13px
from 22.
- Fails on a mutant that attaches without waiting for the first font:
attached at 132x35, then resized to 110x39.
  - `scripts/terminal-pinch-regression.ts` still passes.
- **Unit tests:** `bun test src/lib/fontFamily.test.ts
src/lib/typography.test.ts` cover the new stack order, both weights with
no `local()`, `measurableFontStack` keeping the face, and
`openingFontStack`. They fail on main.
- **`bun run check fast`:** pass (typecheck, build, 8192 unit tests, 0
fail).
- **QA:** in a fresh clone in `/tmp` on the test Mac, against an
isolated herdr session; a JetBrains Mono installed for the test was
removed afterwards.

## Reviews

- **omo-native-code-reviewer: PASS (APPROVE)**, with three MEDIUMs, all
fixed:
  - The slow-face path was untested. Now covered by the slow-face case.
- A dead `try/catch` around `fonts.check`, with a misnamed test. Both
removed.
  - A late face during a live pinch. Fixed with `pinchingRef`, below.

LOW notes fixed: the late-wait comment, and the sourced 0.913 constant
in the check. LOW notes left:
- Every cold load ends with one forced pty resize once the face is set.
This is the same path a font typed in Settings already takes. On Windows
it does change the grid, from Consolas to JetBrains Mono.
- An unquoted "JetBrains Mono Web" typed in Settings is not recognised
as the bundled face. It still draws, but is waited for like any typed
font.
  - typography.test repeats a check of the stack's head.
- **Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, fast, xhigh): PASS** on the third pass.
- First pass: BLOCK with two MEDIUMs. A late face overwrote an active
pinch. The late wait loaded the whole stack, so a typed font's 404 ended
it before the face arrived. Fixed with `monoFaceArrived` and a pinch
guard.
- Second pass: BLOCK with two MEDIUMs. The guard missed the first apply
and a pinch at the saved size, which got two resizes. Replaced the guard
with an explicit `pinchingRef` shared with the pinch handler.
`finishPinch` now sizes the pty once when a pinch that kept its size
ends on a different grid.
- Third pass on the delta: no findings, including touchcancel, unmount,
a chat view taking over, and the Settings handoff.
- `bun run check fast` on the final commit: pass (typecheck, build, 8192
unit tests, 0 fail).
