feat(app): add Ovis for Windows, a one-click setup app with an Ovis.exe download and an MSIX for the Store - #1873
Ovis for Windows (app/windows): the one-click setup for a Windows PC, the twin of Ovis for Mac. Download Ovis.exe from https://ovis.sh/Ovis.exe, click Install, and it runs irm https://ovis.sh/install.ps1 | iex for you, starts herdr when you sign in to Windows, and shows the phone QR code from GET /api/access. No PowerShell window, no terminal. English and Korean text, like the Mac app.
A .NET Framework 4.8 WinForms app (built into Windows 10 1903+ and 11): one ~60 KB exe, nothing else to install. Everything goes through what a terminal user runs (install.ps1, herdr plugin …, scripts/plugin.ts status|phone).
Install Git step when Git for Windows is missing: winget install --id Git.Git, or the official download link.
Starting at sign-in: an HKCU\…\Run value runs a copy at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Ovis\Ovis.exe --start. That needs no administrator, and the user can turn it off in Task Manager's Startup apps. The MSIX uses a windows.startupTask instead. --start starts herdr server only when the Ovis server is installed and herdr is not running.
Every program it runs has a time limit (2 min; installer 45, winget 30, phone step 5). Past it, the program's tree is ended, except herdr and anything under it.
The QR encoder's MIT notice (NOTICE.txt) is embedded in Ovis.exe, shown from a Licences link, and shipped in the MSIX.
Restart / Remove queue the plugin's stop-windows and wait for the server to be down before start-windows or herdr plugin uninstall. Neither ever stops herdr.
Finds the plugin under devswha.ovis or the pre-rename devswha.herdr-web-ui (v0.4.13 still installs under the old id).
QR: a vendored port of Nayuki's encoder (MIT, in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md).
Microsoft Store (MSIX)
build.ps1 also packs Ovis.msix (runFullTrust, internetClient, a startup task). A packaged app's child processes run inside the package, so every program is started through cmd.exe with PROC_THREAD_ATTRIBUTE_DESKTOP_APP_POLICY = BREAKAWAY_ENABLE_PROCESS_TREE. herdr, Bun and the plugin then live in the user's real AppData, and a Store update never ends herdr. No unvirtualizedResources is needed. QA below shows herdr's server running with no package identity when Ovis runs from the MSIX.
The Store identity comes from Partner Center: the repository variables OVIS_MSIX_NAME, OVIS_MSIX_PUBLISHER, OVIS_MSIX_PUBLISHER_DISPLAY_NAME (app/windows/README.md). Until they are set, releases get Ovis.exe only and the job prints a notice.
CI and releases
New .github/workflows/windows-app.yml: builds both files on windows-latest. On a pull request it only uploads them as an artifact and has a read-only token. For a release (workflow_call from Release, or by hand) a separate attach job with contents: write uploads them to the release.
release.yml calls it after publishing, beside mac-dmg.
mac-dmg.yml and windows-app.yml each mark the release latest only once it has both Ovis.dmg and Ovis.exe (whichever finishes second does it), so neither ovis.sh download lands on a release without its file.
Each file uploads under a temporary name and replaces the release's old one only once it is there (no --clobber gap), labelled with the commit it was built from.
A release ships what its tag holds: a tag from before app/windows gets nothing, with a notice. The app_ref dispatch input is a maintainer's recorded exception, and it is not used now.
ovis.sh: /Ovis.exe redirects to releases/latest/download/Ovis.exe. The Windows button keeps copying the install command until a release ships Ovis.exe (0.4.14). A one-line follow-up then points it at the download. Nothing is attached to v0.4.13.
Review needed
This changes workflows (release.yml, mac-dmg.yml, new windows-app.yml) and the release-latest logic, so it needs a real review. Reviews already run:
omo-native-code-reviewer: found a crash on the first output line (the Model was made before WinForms' SynchronizationContext), Restart/Remove trusting a queued herdr plugin action invoke, and the Windows button pointing at a release without Ovis.exe (handled by the post-merge step above), plus minors (Enter re-running Install, Try again always installing, null JSON). All fixed.
Codex (Sol 6.1): first pass found the same crash and a write token on PR builds (the build job is now read-only; a release-only attach job writes). Second pass: Remove skipped the stop when herdr was down, a failed health probe counted as "stopped", cmd expanded %VAR% in arguments, and replaced controls leaked handles. Fixed: Restart/Remove run scripts/plugin.ts stop directly (it returns once the server tree has exited), every word reaches cmd through a per-child environment variable with /v:off as scripts/plugin.ps1 does, and replaced controls are disposed. A third Sol pass over those fixes confirmed all four (no race between the per-call environment variables) and raised one more: a word with a double quote in it. No path or argument the app passes can hold one, so such a word is now refused before anything starts, and the action fails with that message.
Ovis.exe (downloaded, Mark of the Web, opened like a double-click)
Ovis.msix (test-signed, installed with Add-AppxPackage)
First open
SmartScreen: "Windows protected your PC / Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk." → More info → "App: Ovis.exe / Publisher: Unknown publisher" → Run anyway. No prompt on the second open. Defender scan: no threats.
No prompt
Git for Windows missing
"First, Git for Windows" step with Install Git (winget) / Download Git / Check again
not run (same code)
Install
About 1 min; then "Running on this PC" and the Tailscale-needed step (no Tailscale on the runner)
Same; herdr's server runs with no package identity, from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Herdr\bin
Sign-in start
herdr stopped, then the Run value's Ovis.exe --start brought herdr server back (exit 0, no window) and the app answered
herdr stopped, then the startup task's application brought it back, outside the package, no window
Restart
The Ovis server comes back with a new boot_id; herdr's pid unchanged
Same
Remove
Confirmation shown; herdr still running (same pid); plugin uninstalled; Run value, Start menu shortcut and the copied exe gone
herdr still running (same pid); plugin uninstalled
Not observed on a runner: the QR code drawn from a real Tailscale address (the encoder round-trips URLs, a 300-character URL, Korean text and the empty string through zxing-cpp exactly), Make the phone address, the Korean text on a ko-KR Windows, and winget's Install Git.
…xe download and an MSIX for the Store
app/windows is the Windows twin of app/mac: a .NET Framework 4.8 WinForms app
that runs install.ps1, starts herdr at sign-in (an HKCU Run value, or the
MSIX startup task), shows the phone QR code from /api/access, and restarts
or removes the Ovis server without ever stopping herdr. Every program it runs
goes through cmd.exe with the desktop app breakaway policy, so under the MSIX
herdr, Bun and the plugin run outside the package.
windows-app.yml builds Ovis.exe and Ovis.msix on windows-latest; Release calls
it to attach them, and a release becomes latest once it has both Ovis.exe and
Ovis.dmg. ovis.sh/Ovis.exe and the Windows download button point at it.

devswha/ovis#1859: Both PRs change release workflow ordering and asset publication.
devswha/ovis#1832: Both PRs add compatibility with the legacy plugin ID in an Ovis app.
devswha/ovis#1691: The Windows app added here discovers and manages current and legacy plugin IDs, matching the installer’s plugin-ID compatibility contract.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 7a347
The Windows app can occasionally show stray background-process output in its log after an install, and each affected run leaves one extra thread running. This is a minor, recoverable glitch and does not block installing, restarting or removing Ovis. The change is reasonable to merge once the author decides whether to cancel the pending read.

CodeRabbit's re-review of the last commit was rate limited, so no review of it ran. As AGENTS.md asks for a PR that changes workflows, here are the code-review agents' findings on this PR and how each was resolved.
omo-native-code-reviewer (whole diff)
Critical: Model was built in a field initializer, before WinForms installs its SynchronizationContext, so the first output line would crash the app. Fixed: the form's constructor builds it, and Model throws if made without one.
Major: Restart/Remove trusted herdr plugin action invoke, which only queues. Fixed: both run scripts/plugin.ts stop directly (see Codex pass 2).
Major: the Windows button would 404 after merge because v0.4.13 has no Ovis.exe. Resolved by running windows-app.yml for v0.4.13 right after the merge (approved; I will run it and check the download's sha256).
Minor: Enter re-ran Install on other screens; Try again always installed; null JSON from herdr could crash; an abandoned output reader kept reading. All fixed (the last one in 7114e2c, below).
Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, Fast, xhigh)
Pass 1: the same SynchronizationContext crash (fixed). PR builds had contents: write: fixed, the build job is read-only and only the release attach job writes.
Pass 2: Remove skipped the stop when herdr was down; a failed health probe counted as stopped; cmd expanded %VAR% inside arguments; replaced controls leaked handles. Fixed: plugin.ts stop runs synchronously (it waits for the process tree and fails when unsure), every word reaches cmd through a per-child environment variable with /v:off, and replaced controls and images are disposed.
Pass 3 (on those fixes): all four confirmed fixed, no race between the per-call environment variables. One more: a word containing ". Such a word is refused before launch (no path or argument the app passes can hold one).
Pass 4 (on 7114e2c, CodeRabbit's reader finding): CancelIoEx was given the raw handle value, which the reader could close first, and a line could still be delivered after abandoning. Fixed: CancelIoEx takes the SafeFileHandle, and abandoning and delivery share one lock.
Merge pass gate review of 7114e2c, standing in for CodeRabbit (rate-limited on this PR): four blockers. The CI build and the MSIX packaging pass on this exact head.
R1: the latest release can lose its Windows download (.github/workflows/windows-app.yml:124-129)
gh release upload --clobber deletes the existing asset before it uploads the replacement (gh's uploadWithDelete).
If a rerun fails mid-upload, the release stays latest with no Ovis.exe, and the later both-assets check can't repair that.
Fix: upload under a temporary name and rename it, or upload first and delete the old asset only after the new one is in place.
R2: older releases can receive untagged code (windows-app.yml:71-85)
When the requested tag has no Windows app, the workflow builds mutable origin/main instead, stamps it with the old version and attaches it to that release.
Installed updaters act on tags alone, so a release has to ship what its tag holds.
Fix: build only from the tagged source, and skip with a notice when the tag predates the app. Otherwise, get an explicit maintainer exception and record the exact commit built.
A1: the app's child processes are unbounded (app/windows/src/Run.cs:106, Model.cs:311-318)
Every Run.Program reaches WaitForExit(Timeout.Infinite).
A hung installer or status command leaves the window waiting forever and never reaches the reader cleanup from 7114e2c. The two-minute startup loop doesn't bound these waits.
Fix: give each wait a bound, then end the child and its readers. This must still never stop herdr.
A2: the Windows downloads omit the QR code licence notice (app/windows/Ovis.csproj:16-35, build.ps1:60-80)
The attribution is in the repository, but neither Ovis.exe nor the MSIX carries Nayuki's copyright and MIT notice. The MIT licence requires it to travel with the code.
Fix: embed the notice in the exe, for example in an About or Licences view or as a resource, and add the file to the MSIX layout.
Holds
PR runs attach nothing, and the release gate behaves as expected.
The new job's permissions are fine, and the first both-assets promotion check is right.
herdr is never stopped, and both plugin ids are found.
The installer comes only from https://ovis.sh, and the download redirects point only at this repo's releases.
A failed Windows build runs after publishing, so it can't block the release.
Not reproduced natively: reader cancellation and the QR round trip. The merge pass re-checks the fix commits, looking only at the changed range. This PR still merges before #1859, as noted above.
- windows-app.yml uploads each file under a temporary name and replaces the old one only once it is
there, and labels it with the commit it was built from.
- A tag from before app/windows gets nothing; the app_ref input is a maintainer's recorded exception.
- Every program the app runs has a time limit; past it its tree is ended, herdr and all under it aside.
- NOTICE.txt (the QR encoder's MIT notice) is embedded in Ovis.exe, shown from a Licences link and
shipped in the MSIX.
- The ovis.sh Windows button keeps copying the install command until a release ships Ovis.exe.
Thanks for the gate review. All four blockers are fixed in 7d879da. A Codex (Sol) pass on the fixes found two more problems; both are fixed and re-checked (below).
R1: no window without the download.windows-app.yml never deletes the old asset before the new one has its name. The new file goes up as Ovis.exe.uploading, the old one is renamed to Ovis.exe.previous, the new one is renamed to Ovis.exe, and only then is .previous deleted. If the last rename fails, the old file is renamed back. A rerun first repairs a release left mid-swap (.previous with no Ovis.exe), then removes leftovers; a backup is only deleted while the file it backs up exists. Every asset lookup is a plain assignment, so a failed API call stops the run instead of reading as "absent". Every rename is retried. I ran the attach script against a fake gh in four cases: first upload, replace, final rename failing (the run fails loudly and the old file survives as .previous), a rerun after a half swap (recovers to a single Ovis.exe), the asset listing failing mid-recovery (stops, deletes nothing), and a stale backup beside the current file.
R2: a release ships what its tag holds. The fallback to origin/main is gone. A tag from before app/windows gets nothing, and the run says so in a notice. A maintainer's exception is the app_ref dispatch input: a full commit, which must be on main. The built commit is recorded in every attached file's label (built from <sha>), and normal builds carry the tag's commit the same way. Per Dori's decision, nothing is attached to v0.4.13. The ovis.sh Windows button keeps copying the install command, and its switch is dropped from this PR. A one-line follow-up points it at Ovis.exe once 0.4.14 ships the file; /Ovis.exe stays in _redirects.
A1: every child is bounded.Run.Program takes a limit: 2 min by default, the installer 45, winget 30, the phone step 5, plugin uninstall 5. Past it, the program's tree is ended newest first and the run reports the timeout, then the existing reader cleanup runs. herdr is never stopped:
the walk does not descend into a herdr.exe;
each process is checked through a held handle before the walk looks at its children. Its creation time must be readable, no earlier than its parent's and no later than the snapshot, so a PID reused since (including one a departed herdr left to its orphans) leads nowhere. Its executable, from QueryFullProcessImageNameW on that handle, must not be herdr.exe. A process that fails or cannot be checked is skipped with everything under it, and the kill reuses the checked handles.
A2: the notice travels with the binaries.app/windows/NOTICE.txt (Project Nayuki's copyright and the MIT text) is an embedded resource of Ovis.exe, shown from a new Licences link, and copied into the MSIX layout.
Codex (Sol) on the gate fixes: R1, R2, A2 fixed. On A1 it found a PID-reuse path, and on R1 a failed final rename that could still strand the download. A second pass then found a stale-parent-PID path in the tree walk and a failed lookup read as "absent" in the recovery. Both are fixed as above, and a final pass reports P1 FIXED, P2 FIXED.
Merge pass gate re-check of 7d879da (standing in for CodeRabbit): A1 and A2 are fixed, and R2's tag rule holds. Two release-asset points remain.
Fixed or holding
A1: child waits are bounded and the readers are ended.
A2:NOTICE.txt is in the exe and in the MSIX layout. The exact-head CI build and packaging log show it.
R2, tag provenance: a tag older than the app gets nothing without an explicit exception, and line 91 checks APP_REF.
1. The latest download can still disappear (.github/workflows/windows-app.yml:188-198)
The swap first renames Ovis.exe to .previous. If the run is interrupted, or both the promotion and the rollback fail, the release stays latest with no Ovis.exe. A plain rerun then can't tell that anything is wrong.
Fix: make the job safe to rerun. At its start, if Ovis.exe is missing and Ovis.exe.previous exists, rename .previous back before doing anything else. Alternatively, upload the new file under a temporary name first, and touch Ovis.exe only once the upload has succeeded.
2. A rollback mislabels the restored binary (windows-app.yml:152-157,173-174,193-194)
Every rename writes the current build's commit label, including the rename that restores the older binary. So a failed replacement from commit B can restore commit A's exe labelled "built from B".
Fix: read each asset's existing label before backing it up, and keep that label through the backup and the restore.
The merge pass re-checks the fix, looking at the changed range only. This PR still goes before #1859 for 0.4.14.
Thanks for the re-check. Both release-asset points are fixed in 46a2f83.
1. The latest download can't stay missing. Two layers now:
A new step, Put back a file set aside mid-swap, runs if: failure() || cancelled(). When Ovis.exe (or Ovis.msix) is missing and .previous exists, it renames .previous straight back, with its own label. So a failed promotion or a cancelled run puts the old file back in the same run.
The swap step's own start (lines 170-180) does the same before anything else, so a plain rerun after a run that died outright also restores .previous first, then swaps.
2. Each file keeps its own label.rename() takes the label explicitly. The old file's label is read (asset_label) before it is set aside, and is kept through the set-aside, the rollback and the rerun recovery. Only the new upload carries built from <this build>.
Simulated against a fake gh that tracks names and labels:
Case
Result
Replace
Ovis.exe [built from B]
Final rename fails
The run fails; Ovis.exe.previous [built from A] keeps A's label
Rerun after a half swap
Restores A with A's label, then swaps in B
Put-back step after a cancel
Ovis.exe [built from A]
Put-back with nothing missing
No change
check fast is green on 46a2f83 and actionlint is clean. A Codex (Sol) check of this delta reports 1: FIXED, 2: FIXED.
Merge pass gate re-check, round 3 (46a2f83): R2 is fixed, and one R1 case remains to fix.
Fixed
Every rename and restore keeps the asset's own label.
A healthy rerun repairs a missing Ovis.exe before it changes anything else in the release.
Accepted, no change needed: the runner dies right after Ovis.exe is renamed to .previous, or the promotion, rollback and cleanup all fail. The release is then without Ovis.exe until the next run, which repairs it first.
GitHub releases have no atomic way to replace an asset, so a dead runner always leaves some window.
The rerun repair is the right mitigation. Please say it in the README: when a Windows attach run is killed, run the workflow again for that tag.
Still to fix: a failed MSIX upload leaves a mismatched pair (windows-app.yml:166-205,222-228)
Once the EXE replacement succeeds, a failed MSIX upload leaves the EXE from build B beside the MSIX from build A. Cleanup then succeeds without repairing it (gate simulation S7).
Fix: upload the MSIX first and swap the EXE only after it succeeds, or roll the EXE back too when the MSIX step fails. Either way, the release's two files then always come from the same build.
Thanks. The mismatched-pair case is fixed in fc0cb6e, and the README has the rerun line.
Mixed builds are gone. The swap now lives in app/windows/release-attach.sh and is all or nothing across Ovis.exe and Ovis.msix:
Every new file is uploaded first under its staging name. A failed upload changes nothing the release serves, and the staged files are removed.
Each file is then swapped in: the old one becomes NAME.previous with its own label, and the new one takes NAME. Any failure undoes every swap made so far.
Only after every replaced file has been swapped is a marker asset, ovis-windows-swap.committed, uploaded. A file new to the release (no old one to replace) waits as NAME.uploading until then. After the marker, new files take their names, the .previous files are deleted, then the marker.
recover (run on failure() || cancelled(), and at the start of every attach) leaves one build without looking at labels. With the marker, every swap had succeeded, so it finishes the swap. Without it, every .previous is an interrupted swap and is put back with its own label, whatever build runs the recovery. (A Codex pass caught that an earlier label-based version could delete a needed backup on a rerun from another build.)
README: "If the runner itself dies mid-swap, the release can be left without Ovis.exe until the next run, which repairs it first: run the Windows app workflow again for that tag."
Simulated against a fake gh that tracks names and labels (the real script, under set -euo pipefail):

check fast is green on fc0cb6e, actionlint is clean, and a Codex (Sol) re-check of release-attach.sh reports FIXED.
Merge pass gate re-check, round 4 (fc0cb6e): the failed-MSIX case from round 3 is fixed. The gate then ran 325 fault and cancel cases against release-attach.sh with a fake gh, plus 10 reruns where the Store setting changed. Three gaps remain:
1. A failed backup delete can leave a mixed pair (windows-app.yml:144-153, release-attach.sh:75-103)
The release already has EXE A and MSIX A, and the Store variables are unset, so this run attaches the EXE only.
If deleting the EXE backup fails, the run ends with EXE B next to MSIX A, even though cleanup succeeds.
An EXE-only rerun keeps that mismatch.
Fix: when a run doesn't attach an MSIX but the release has one from another build, treat that as part of the transaction. Either remove it or keep the old EXE, so both files come from one build.
2. Recovery looks only at the files this run selects (release-attach.sh:17,42,73)
Interrupt a run after MSIX was renamed to .previous, then rerun with the Store variables unset.
Recovery checks only the EXE. The rerun exits 0 with MSIX still missing, and .previous and .uploading are left behind.
Fix: recover the previous transaction for every known asset (Ovis.exe, Ovis.msix) before choosing what to upload.
3. Two lookups treat a failure as "absent" (release-attach.sh:78,113)
The staged-file check treats a failed lookup as "no file".
The final marker lookup loses its exit status and goes on to DELETE with an empty id.
Fix: capture each lookup in a plain assignment that stops the script on failure, as the rest of the script already does, before testing or parsing the result.
Holds
Labels are kept in every case.
The failure/cancel step calls the script correctly.
Only the three stated files changed.
The runner-death window stays accepted, as before.
Thanks for the 325-case run. All three gaps are fixed in 193f701.
1. A run that doesn't carry the MSIX no longer leaves a mixed pair. The swap covers every file the release can carry (Ovis.exe, Ovis.msix). A file the run does not upload is renamed to .previous in the same swap. On commit it is removed with the other old files, and on undo it is put back. An EXE-only run on an A/A release ends as EXE B alone, never EXE B beside MSIX A. If deleting a backup fails after the commit marker is up, the cleanup step's recover finishes the commit, and it ends the same way.
2. Recovery covers every known asset.recover walks Ovis.exe and Ovis.msix whatever this run selects, before anything is uploaded. An interrupted MSIX swap followed by an EXE-only rerun leaves no .previous or .uploading behind.
3. No lookup reads a failure as "absent". The staged-file check and the final marker lookup are now plain assignments under set -e, like the rest, before they are tested or parsed.
Simulated against a fake gh (the real script under set -euo pipefail). The twelve earlier cases still end with one build. The new ones:
Case
Result
EXE-only run on EXE A + MSIX A
EXE B alone
EXE-only run, the EXE backup delete fails
The attach fails after the marker; the cleanup recover leaves EXE B alone
MSIX swap interrupted, then an EXE-only rerun
EXE B alone, no leftovers
The asset listing fails
Stops; EXE A + MSIX A untouched
check fast is green on 193f701, and a Codex (Sol) re-check of the change reports 1, 2 and 3 FIXED.
Merge pass review-work report. Overall: PASSED after five gate rounds. CodeRabbit was rate-limited on this PR, so the gate reviews below stand in for it, per the maintainer's rule for workflow PRs when CodeRabbit is limited.
Attaching (app/windows/release-attach.sh, all or nothing):
The new files go up as .uploading, the old ones step aside as .previous, and the new ones take their names.
An ovis-windows-swap.committed marker is created, and only then are the .previous files deleted.
An asset the run does not carry is taken out in the same swap.
Recovery covers every known asset before a run stages anything.
Every asset keeps its own label.
A failed lookup stops the run.
Gate evidence:
339 fault and cancellation cases, 678 healthy reruns, and 20 direct reruns of interrupted transactions, with and without the Store variables. All pass.
All 225 injected lookup failures stopped the run at once.
A stale marker is removed before new staging.
Tag provenance: a release gets only what its tag holds, or an explicit, recorded exception.
App: child waits are bounded, and their readers are ended. herdr is never stopped. NOTICE.txt with the QR code's MIT notice is in the exe and the MSIX.
CI: the exact-head Windows build and MSIX packaging passed.
Accepted, and documented in the README: a runner that dies outright can leave the release incomplete until the next run for that tag, which repairs it first. GitHub has no atomic asset replace.
Floating action tags: they remain here. #1847, which merges next in the chain, pins them.
All required checks are green and no review thread is open.
CodeRabbit did not review this PR (rate-limited or skipped). The reviews above stand in for it.
…and download Ovis.exe on Windows (#1924)
## What
The Beta page on ovis.sh, cut down to what a tester needs, now in every
language the home page has, plus the follow-up #1873 promised for the
Windows download.
- **Shorter Beta page** (`/beta/`): a title, one line, then two steps
with one big button per platform.
1. **Install Ovis on your computer**: Mac → `Ovis.dmg`, Windows →
`Ovis.exe` (the `install.ps1` command stays as a small "or copy the
PowerShell command" line), Linux → copy the one-line command. One line
on Tailscale.
2. **Get the phone app**: iPhone → TestFlight, with one short line for
when the beta is not taking testers. Android → join the group, opt in,
then install from Google Play.
Feedback is one line linking GitHub issues. English main text drops from
362 words to 98.
- **Languages**: the page is in English, Simplified Chinese
(`/zh/beta/`, new), Japanese (`/ja/beta/`, new) and Korean (`/ko/beta/`,
shortened). Those are the home page's locales. A language picker styled
like the home page's sits in the header. The four pages share one
hreflang group, and the sitemap lists all four. No other page changes
language.
- **Windows download** (`assets/platform.js`): v0.4.14 ships `Ovis.exe`
and is the latest release, so a Windows visitor's download button now
links to https://ovis.sh/Ovis.exe instead of copying the PowerShell
command. It keeps the shipped link and drops the Mac-only "macOS 13 or
later" tip. Its label and aria-label already had translations, so
`index.html` is untouched.
- **`_redirects`**: Cloudflare Pages follows a rule [even where a file
matches](https://developers.cloudflare.com/pages/configuration/redirects/),
so the existing `/zh/*` and `/ja/*` → home rules would swallow the new
pages. Static rules above them serve `/zh/beta/` and `/ja/beta/` (200),
and send the slashless addresses to them (301).
- `assets/beta.js` also runs the Copy buttons (localized "Copied") and
the language picker. `scripts/ovis-site.test.ts` checks all four beta
pages. The README and the unreleased `site-beta-page.md` fragment
describe the new page. A new `site-windows-download.md` fragment covers
the Windows button.
## QA
Run against the branch's `ovis-site/` served locally (Bun.WebView /
Chrome, phone metrics at 390 px):
- All four beta pages: Mac links `Ovis.dmg` and Windows links
`https://ovis.sh/Ovis.exe`. Clicking the Windows command and the Linux
"Copy command" puts the exact command on the clipboard and shows Copied
/ 已复制 / コピーしました / 복사됨. The picker opens `/zh/beta/` from English and
`/beta/` from the other three. The TestFlight and Google Group links are
set and the "coming soon" notes are hidden. No horizontal overflow at
390 or 1440 px. Dark mode checked.
- Home page as a Windows visitor (English and `?lang=ko`): both download
buttons are `<a href="https://ovis.sh/Ovis.exe">` labelled "Download for
Windows" / "Windows용 다운로드", with no tip. Linux visitors still get the
copy button, and Mac visitors the `Ovis.dmg` link with its tip.
- `curl -sIL https://ovis.sh/Ovis.exe`: 302 →
`releases/latest/download/Ovis.exe` →
`releases/download/v0.4.14/Ovis.exe` → the asset.
- `bun run check fast`: passes.
- The `_redirects` exemptions can only be exercised on Cloudflare: see
the preview check in the comments below.

Ovis for Windows (

A packaged app's child processes run inside the package, so every program is started throughcmd.exewithPROC_THREAD_ATTRIBUTE_DESKTOP_APP_POLICY = BREAKAWAY_ENABLE_PROCESS_TREE. herdr, Bun and the plugin then live in the user's real AppData, and a Store update never ends herdr. This changes workflows (
release.yml,mac-dmg.yml, newwindows-app.yml) and the release-latest logic, so it needs a real review. Reviews already run:herdr plugin action invoke, and the Windows button pointing at a release withoutOvis.exe(handled by the post-merge step above), plus minors (Enter re-running Install, Try again always installing, null JSON). All fixed.attachjob writes). Second pass: Remove skipped the stop when herdr was down, a failed health probe counted as "stopped",cmdexpanded%VAR%in arguments, and replaced controls leaked handles. Fixed: Restart/Remove runscripts/plugin.ts stopdirectly (it returns once the server tree has exited), every word reachescmdthrough a per-child environment variable with/v:offasscripts/plugin.ps1does, and replaced controls are disposed. A third Sol pass over those fixes confirmed all four (no race between the per-call environment variables) and raised one more: a word with a double quote in it. No path or argument the app passes can hold one, so such a word is now refused before anything starts, and the action fails with that message.QA
