feat(tasks): inspect running Claude subagent details - #1842
A running Claude Code subagent in the composer's background-task list can now be opened. Its row is a disclosure that opens a read-only sheet with the prompt the subagent was dispatched with, what it has written so far and the tools it called (name and arguments). The sheet reads on open and on Refresh; it never polls. A background command, an OmO task and a PC whose bridge predates the route open the same sheet with a note that says why there is nothing to show, instead of an empty transcript.
Why: until now a running subagent was only a title and a spinner; what it was doing showed up only once it ended (the chat's task card). This answers "what is it doing right now?" without opening the terminal.
Design reference (src/AGENTS.md): none of the Codex, Claude, Paseo or T3 Code apps shows a running subagent's transcript; the app keeps its own task disclosure (the chat's ended-task card and this list). agent-of-empires' background-agents panel (MIT) suggested the interaction of opening prompt, tools and results from the row; nothing of it is copied. Recorded in the DESIGN.md entry.
How
GET /api/pane/background-agent?pane_id=&agent_id= (server/background-agent.ts): resolves the pane's Claude session before and after the read (409 background_target_changed if it moved), 501 for commands, OmO and other agents, 404 for an unknown agent, 503 for a store it cannot read, 400 for a malformed id. Proxied to remote PCs (MACHINE_PROXY_PATH) and readable by watching devices.
backgroundAgentDetail (server/claude-subagents.ts): a bounded, read-only reader of <session>/subagents/agent-<id>.{meta.json,jsonl} beside the session's own transcript. Plain-word ids of up to 128 characters, no links, descriptor identity checks before and after the read, only records of this session's and this agent's sidechain. It reads the first 64 KiB and the last 192 KiB and caps the output at 128 events and 128 KiB, flagged truncated / incomplete.
shared/tasks.ts: PaneBackgroundAgentDetail and OmoTask.detail_kind.
BackgroundTasks / BackgroundAgentDetail: a modal sheet (Escape, scrim, phone Back, focus return); answers to stale reads are dropped by generation. ko/ja/zh strings are in src/lib/i18n/chat.*. The PR also adds a demo transport route, a DESIGN.md entry and a changelog fragment.
Ported from a local branch that was 186 commits behind main, onto the i18n parts, the per-file shared types and the split routes.
This adds a new HTTP route (an HTTP contract change), so it needs a real review.
Review
Codex (gpt-6-astra):
MEDIUM fixed: an unreadable file was answered as 404 "agent gone". It is now 503, so a failed Refresh keeps the last content. A test covers it and fails if the fix is reverted.
HIGH declined: a symlinked projects/<project> directory. The parent transcript path is the one the conversation route already trusts, and the subagent files beside it carry the same trust. Every record must still name this session and this agent, and a symlinked ~/.claude has to keep working.
omo-native-code-reviewer:
HIGH fixed: pre-Ovis names in the new tests (ovis:settings, ovis_device).
HIGH fixed: a race in the demo regression's held read. The release now exists before the read goes out.
MEDIUM fixed: the route now names itself in the request log.
Verification
bun run check fast passed on the rebased branch: workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests
bun test ./server/claude-subagents.test.ts ./server/background-agent.test.ts ./src/lib/i18n.test.ts ./scripts/conventions.test.ts: 124 pass. Typecheck clean.
Contract test server/background-agent.contract.test.ts on the isolated test herdr (bun run check run): 7 pass
scripts/background-agent-detail-demo-regression.ts (enrolled in ci-browser.sh): 22 checks pass at 390 and 1440 in light, dark and Korean. Screenshots checked: the long transcript at 1440 dark, the Korean phone sheet, and the Korean refresh-failure note.

New Features
Open a running Claude Code subagent from the background-task list to view its prompt and recorded work, including text and tool activity.
Refresh details on demand. The read-only view indicates when content is unavailable, incomplete, or truncated.
Use the detail view on desktop and mobile, with keyboard and touch-friendly controls. Translations are available in Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.
Bug Fixes
The task list remains open while viewing details, and stale results are discarded when the view or selected pane changes.
Running Claude subagent tasks now expose a read-only detail sheet with the prompt and recorded text and tool events. A new server endpoint returns bounded transcript details, and the task list, demo transport, and browser regression cover the flow.
The protocol adds a detail response shape and task detail-kind field. Transcript reads validate identity and file access, enforce read and output limits, and return prompt and text/tool events with truncation or incompleteness indicators.
The endpoint validates requests and checks the pane session before and after reading. The route is wired into the server and machine proxy. Tests cover request errors, session changes, device access, and local and remote bridges.
Task detail sheet and data flow src/components/BackgroundAgentDetail.tsx, src/components/BackgroundAgentDetail.css, src/components/BackgroundTasks.tsx, src/components/BackgroundTasks.css, src/lib/api.ts, src/lib/machineContext.tsx, src/lib/i18n/*, src/lib/i18n.test.ts, site/demo/transport.ts, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/running-subagent-details.md
Running task rows open the detail sheet. It fetches on open and manual refresh, displays transcript content and status notes, and handles close and stale-read behavior. The demo transport and translations include the detail flow.
The browser regression checks desktop and phone flows, simulated response states, stale reads, focus behavior, and layout. The CI browser lane runs the script, which is also listed in the development guide.
devswha/herdr-web-ui issue 1053 tracks inspection of a running background agent. This change adds a read-only detail sheet for running Claude subagents, which addresses that described item.

Merge Risk: Low · up to fde27
This adds a read-only detail sheet for running Claude subagents, backed by a bounded, session-checked endpoint. The one remaining concern is that on Windows the guard against a transcript file being swapped during a read can fail for rare file IDs. It is low impact and easy to fix with BigInt stats, so it is mergeable with follow-up.

Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
CodeRabbit hit its review limit on this PR, so no CodeRabbit review ran. This PR adds an HTTP route (GET /api/pane/background-agent), so these agent reviews stand in for it until a real review. Both reviewed the full diff against main before the push.
HIGH: pre-Ovis names in the new tests (herdr-web-ui:settings, herdr_web_device) failed scripts/conventions.test.ts. Fixed: they now use ovis:settings and ovis_device.
HIGH: the demo regression's held read could lose its release, because bgRelease was only set after the read finished. Fixed: the release promise is created before the read goes out. The demo regression now passes, 22 checks, twice.
MEDIUM: the route was logged as unmatched. Fixed: setRequestRoute(BACKGROUND_AGENT_PATH).
MEDIUM: the session lookup (ensure) runs before and after every read. Kept: this is the fence that catches a pane changing session mid-read. It costs at most a bounded lookup per Refresh, and the sheet never polls.
LOW: no route-list entry in shared/protocol.ts; an unknown pane is described as "agent no longer in this session"; events are keyed by index (the list is replaced on every read). Left as they are.
Codex (gpt-6-astra)
MEDIUM: an existing but unreadable transcript or meta file answered 404 "agent gone". Fixed: openIn now tells missing (404) from unopenable (503 background_store_unavailable), so a failed Refresh keeps the last content. There is a test in claude-subagents.test.ts, and it fails when the fix is reverted.
HIGH: a projects/<project> directory replaced by a symlink makes the store resolve outside ~/.claude. Declined: the parent transcript path comes from the session tracker, which the conversation route already reads from, and the subagent files beside it carry the same trust. Every record must still carry this session's id and this agent's sidechain, and a symlinked ~/.claude has to keep working.
Verification on head 71fc5a8f0: bun run check fast, the contract test on the isolated herdr (7 pass), and the demo regression at 390/1440 in light, dark and Korean.
Merge pass review-work for 71fc5a8: REVIEW FAILED on two of the reader's own promises. The normal flow works. Since this PR adds an HTTP route and CodeRabbit was rate-limited, this comment records the independent review.
Blockers
The file descriptors aren't checked after the read (server/claude-subagents.ts:809-822). The metadata and transcript descriptors are closed right after reading, and intact(folder) checks only the directories. The gate modelled the opened transcript being moved outside the session and its path replaced: the reader still returned the content. Please recheck each file's identity and location (dev/ino plus the path) before closing, the same way the folders are rechecked, and add a deterministic regression for the file-level race.
An unreadable store can answer 404 instead of 503 (:646-652, :809-813). An EIO from readSync on the metadata file, or an EACCES while inspecting the directory, ends up as not_found. The sheet then clears what it showed and says the agent is gone. Please treat I/O and access errors separately from absence and from malformed JSON, and return 503 for them, as the description promises.
Checked and passing
Tests. 200 unit tests pass. The contract tests pass 7/7 on an isolated herdr session: 401 without a token, watch GET allowed and POST refused, the 409 race, and the proxy to two PCs. The browser regression passes 21 checks. The typecheck passes.
Path safety at this head. The id is a plain word of at most 128 characters. Links are refused, and the folders are rechecked before and after the read.
Read bounds. At most 256 KiB is read, and the answer is capped at 128 events and 128 KiB of text.
Older bridges and translations. A PC on an older bridge gets the "update this PC's bridge" note without a request. All 22 strings are in ko, ja and zh.
Non-blocking
Test gap. A mutant that removes the file-link guards still passes the whole suite, because the linked fixtures claim another agent or session. One fixture whose linked file claims this session and agent would pin the guard.
Watch devices. They can now read tool-call arguments, which can include file contents. That matches what the live conversation already shows them. Please say in server/index.ts that this is deliberate.
File size.server/claude-subagents.ts grows to 890 lines.
Both blockers from the merge pass review are fixed in 440fda2:
File descriptors are rechecked after the read. Each opened meta and transcript file is checked again before it is closed: the same dev/ino at its path, and (where the kernel names a descriptor's file) the descriptor still at that path. A file moved out of the session, or its path replaced, while it was read is now 503 background_store_unavailable. The regression is deterministic: a detailIo.readSync hook moves the file and puts another one at its path during the read.
I/O and access errors answer 503, not 404. Only absence (ENOENT/ENOTDIR) is not_found. Any other error from looking at a folder or file on the way is unavailable, and so is an error from the read itself (e.g. EIO). A meta file that does not parse is still no agent. This is covered by an EIO on each read and a session folder that cannot be looked into, along with the subagents folder that cannot be opened.
Non-blocking:
Test gap: fixed. A linked transcript whose records claim this session and agent is now pinned as not_found. I checked each new guard by mutation: dropping the recheck, answering the read error as 404, answering the folder error as 404, or following file links each makes the suite fail.
Watch devices:server/index.ts now says that this GET is readable by a watching device on purpose.
File size: left as is, since splitting the reader would be a refactor beyond this PR.
Verified on 440fda2: bun run check fast passes; one earlier run of it exited only on an unrelated unit-test leftover process with 6401/6401 passing. The contract test passes 7/7 on the isolated herdr, and the typecheck is clean.
Codex review (gpt-6.1-sol, fast, xhigh) of the fix commit 440fda2: no HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW findings. It checked the post-read identity and path recheck, the I/O error classification, the malformed-meta handling and descriptor cleanup.
Merge pass: one rebase needed.#1874 is merged on main. scripts/ci-browser.test.ts no longer pins the browser lane's count; it checks the scripts on disk. This branch still edits the old toHaveLength(…) line, so it now conflicts with main. Rebase onto main and drop this PR's change to scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, keeping its run_script line in scripts/ci-browser.sh. The new test checks that line automatically. This is the last rebase a lane count will cause. The merge pass checks that the rebase changed only that file, then re-queues the PR. A rebase needs no new CodeRabbit review.
Rebased onto main after #1874 and pushed fde2747 (was 440fda2). I dropped this PR's change to scripts/ci-browser.test.ts and kept its run_script line in scripts/ci-browser.sh. Apart from that file, the branch's patch is identical to before (git patch-id matches). scripts/ci-browser.test.ts passes 7/7, and bun run check fast passed before the push. This is a rebase only, so it doesn't need another CodeRabbit review.

Codex review of ab77d50 (gpt-6.1-sol, service tier fast, reasoning xhigh, read-only): No findings. It checked that identities are built the same way wherever they are compared (look vs fstat in openIn, stillThere and openFolder, folderId vs the chain ids), that no comparison mixes a number with a BigInt, that the size limits are still enforced, and that Linux behaves as before.
A running Claude Code subagent in the composer's background-task list now
opens a read-only detail sheet: the prompt it was dispatched with, its prose
and its tool calls, read on open and on Refresh from its own transcript,
bounded and fenced to the pane's session.
- server/claude-subagents.ts backgroundAgentDetail: bounded reader of
<session>/subagents/agent-<id>.{meta.json,jsonl}; no links, descriptor
identity checks, records must be this session's and this agent's.
- GET /api/pane/background-agent (server/background-agent.ts): pane
session resolved before and after the read (409 on change), 501 for
commands and other agents, 404 unknown agent, 503 unreadable store.
Proxied to remote PCs and readable by watching devices.
- shared/tasks.ts: PaneBackgroundAgentDetail and OmoTask.detail_kind.
- BackgroundTasks / BackgroundAgentDetail sheet; ko/ja/zh strings in
src/lib/i18n/chat.*; demo transport route; DESIGN.md; changelog.
- Unit, contract and demo browser regression tests.
Ported from the local branch feat/running-subagent-details onto current
main (i18n parts, shared types per file, route split).
A transcript or meta file that is there but cannot be opened as looked at
(no permission, replaced meanwhile) now answers 503
background_store_unavailable instead of 404, so a failing Refresh keeps
the sheet's last content rather than saying the agent left. The route
names itself in the request log, and the new tests use the Ovis names
(ovis:settings, ovis_device). The demo regression's held read creates its
release before the read goes out, so an early release is never lost.
…rors as 503
The merge pass review found two promises of the detail reader unkept:
- A transcript or meta file moved out of the session, or its path
replaced, while it was read was still answered. Each opened file is
now rechecked before it is closed: the same identity at its path, and
its descriptor where it was. A file that fails is 503.
- An I/O or access error (EIO from a read, EACCES on a folder on the way)
could answer 404, so the sheet cleared what it showed. Absence
(ENOENT, ENOTDIR) alone is 404 now; any other error is 503, and a
meta file that will not parse is still no agent.
Regression: a file swapped while read, an EIO on either read, a folder
that cannot be looked into, and a linked file that claims this session
and agent. Each fails when its guard is removed. The route says that a
watching device reads it on purpose.
Merge pass: after #1857 and #1880 merged (9bf8805), this PR conflicts with main in server/machine-api.ts, site/demo/transport.ts. Please rebase onto main and push. The merge pass rechecks only the rebase delta and requeues it.
Rebased onto main after #1857 and #1880 and pushed a875347 (was ab77d50). Both conflicts were additive, and both sides are kept:
server/machine-api.ts:MACHINE_PROXY_PATH keeps main's diff\/refs and has this PR's background-agent after omo-tasks.
site/demo/transport.ts: the protocol import is main's list (with RepoBranchComparison and RepoDiffRefs) plus this PR's OmoActivity, OmoTask and PaneBackgroundAgentDetail.
Nothing else changed. bun run check fast (typecheck included) passed before the push. This is a rebase only, so it doesn't need another CodeRabbit review.
Merge pass review-work report. Overall: PASSED. This PR adds an HTTP route and CodeRabbit was rate-limited, so per AGENTS.md this comment, together with the earlier one, records the independent review.
The background-agent contract tests pass 7/7 on an isolated herdr. They cover 401 without a token, watch GET allowed and POST refused, the 409 session race, and the proxy to two PCs.
The browser regression passes 21 checks.
Path safety
The id is a plain word of at most 128 characters, and links are refused.
Folders and files are rechecked before and after the read by device/inode and location. Round 1's B1 is fixed in 440fda2: a file moved mid-read is refused.
Errors (round 1's B2, fixed)
EIO and EACCES now answer 503, not 404.
Bounds
At most 256 KiB is read, and an answer is capped at 128 events and 128 KiB of text.
Compatibility and translations
A PC on an older bridge gets the "update this PC's bridge" note without a request.
All 22 strings are in ko, ja and zh.
Watch devices
They can read tool-call arguments, as they already see the live conversation. server/index.ts now says this is deliberate.
Follow-ups (MINOR)
No fixture pins the file-link refusal: a mutant that drops the link guards still passes the suite.
server/claude-subagents.ts has reached about 900 lines.
All required checks are green, and no review thread is open.
The toHaveLength edit to scripts/ci-browser.test.ts was dropped.
Follow-up ab77d50 reads subagent file identities with { bigint: true } (dev:ino as BigInt), so an NTFS file ID above Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER keeps full precision. Two files made close together then can't compare as the same file. Sizes are still compared as numbers.
The merge pass checked this range: claude-subagents and conventions pass (97), the typecheck passes, and git merge-tree is clean.
…1987)
## What this adds
An OpenCode 2 pane's subagents now show up the way a Claude Code pane's
do:
- the message box's background tasks button and the sidebar badge count
the running ones;
- the list shows them, with the newest ten that ended in the last day
(title, agent, model, steps, tool calls, context tokens);
- a turn that ends while a subagent it started still runs reads **BG**,
not DONE, and its finish is alerted once (the same BackgroundWait path
as Claude Code);
- one left running when the pane stops running that session reads as
lost;
- a subagent run in the background leaves a card in the chat with its
answer when it ends, instead of a plain notice, and a foreground call's
answer no longer shows OpenCode's `<subagent …>` tag.
Fixes#893
## How
OpenCode 2 runs each subagent in a child session of the session that
started it (`session_v2.parent_id`), with its own `session_message`
rows, in the store the chat already reads. Read from OpenCode's own
source (`packages/core`, dev): the `subagent` tool
(`tool/plugin/subagent.ts`) makes the child, `session/projector.ts`
appends an `idle` row with the run's outcome (`succeeded` / `failed` /
`interrupted`) when a run ends, and `session/subagent-completion.ts`
wakes the parent with a `synthetic` row (`metadata.source: "subagent"`,
`childID`, `agent`, `state`) when a background one ends.
- `server/opencode-subagents.ts`: `opencodeSubagentState` reads a
session's children. A child whose newest run row is `idle` has ended; a
later prompt (the tool called again with its sessionID) starts another
run. A store 1.x wrote has no idle rows, so there an answered, failed or
stopped step ends the run. A run last written before the running
OpenCode service started was taken along by the service before it and
reads as lost. `OpencodeSubagentStatus` tracks the session herdr's
OpenCode integration reports for each pane (`herdr:opencode`, never a
guess from the cwd) and polls the store every 2 s, once for all panes.
- `server/core/status.ts`: the tracker feeds the same count,
BackgroundWait and `pane-status` frames as the Claude tracker. A turn
end on an OpenCode pane polls it first, so the frame that ends the turn
already says BG. Which tracker speaks for a pane follows the agent the
newest snapshot shows there (`owns`): a tracker that has not read that
snapshot yet can neither end the new agent's wait nor keep the old
agent's wait from being dropped. A pane's first session keeps what its
turn was seen do before the session was found, unless the pane ran
another agent until then.
- `server/tasks-routes.ts`: `GET /api/pane/omo-tasks` answers an
OpenCode pane with its subagents (the session the pane runs now, if it
ran Claude Code before). Each task says `detail_kind: null`: the detail
sheet #1842 added opens for every running task, and for an OpenCode one
it now says this PC can't show details, not that the bridge needs an
update.
- `server/opencode.ts`: the synthetic wake row becomes a `task_result`
part (the card Claude Code's ended subagents use), and the foreground
tool's output is unwrapped.
- Client: the list shows "N more running" when the answer says some are
left out. `BackgroundTasks`' `claude` prop is now `subagents`, set for
Claude Code and OpenCode panes, so an OpenCode pane with only ended
subagents still finds its list.
As for a foreground Claude Code `Agent` call, a foreground OpenCode
subagent's answer stays its tool call's output and gets no separate
card.
Known limits: ends are read from the child session's own idle row, which
matches OpenCode as released (2.1.4); anomalyco/opencode#57418 (open)
would answer the parent only after a child's own background work, and
#1999 tracks reading ends from the parent's record. Jobs live in
OpenCode's service process. If that service goes away mid-run without
ending it (a crash, not a clean shutdown, which appends an interrupted
idle row), the child reads as running until another service starts or
the pane leaves the session.
## Verification
- Unit (`server/opencode-subagents.test.ts`, `server/opencode.test.ts`,
`server/tasks-routes.test.ts`; with `background-agent`,
`background-wait` and `claude-subagents` 158 pass): running, continued,
succeeded, failed, interrupted, never prompted, older than a day,
archived and other sessions' children; lost when not live or orphaned by
a service restart; turn counts by each run's own prompt; the 1.x
fallback; unreadable stores; the tracker's change, home-screen,
pane-leaves-OpenCode, session-switch and first-session rules; the route;
`detail_kind`; the card and the unwrapped output. Mutations each fail a
test: idle never ending a run, never lost, dispatch by creation time, no
card, no unwrap, no `detail_kind`, a reset on every first session, no
reset after another agent.
- Contract (`server/opencode.contract.test.ts`, real isolated herdr,
HTTP and WebSocket, its own server with an empty OpenCode state dir): a
running child is counted in a `pane-status` frame, the turn that ends
meanwhile gets `background_wait`, the list shows it, and when it ends
and OpenCode wakes the parent the count goes and the conversation ends
with its card. 21/21 on the PR head (`e9d83c227`). Removing the
tracker's refresh fails the case at its count frame.
- Status hub (`server/core/status.test.ts`, the real `createStatusHub`
with the collector stood in for): an OpenCode turn after Claude Code's,
held on its subagent before any snapshot and after one, with its finish
alert called off; a snapshot read before the session was found, answered
after it; a Claude Code session that follows OpenCode's. Reverting the
reset that keeps OpenCode's rests, the immediate lookup, the snapshot's
agent, or the read stamps each fails it.
- Status hub, more cases (QA script, not in the repo: the real
`createStatusHub` driven through `clientSnapshot`, with herdr's
collector and snapshot, the OpenCode service and the Claude lookup
stubbed): a session found only after its turn ended (with or without
OpenCode's home screen first) reads BG; an OpenCode pane held on a
subagent that then runs a resting Claude session with a running subagent
does not inherit the hold; a Claude pane held on a subagent that then
runs OpenCode drops the hold. Removing the snapshot's agent rule or
resetting on every first session each fails it. The status hub has no
unit harness in the repo.
- Browser, the list's cut (QA script, real built client, isolated herdr,
1440x900 and 390x844): with 1004 running subagents the button counts
them all, the list holds 1000, and "4 more running" shows below it.
- Browser (on the PR head; real built client, real server on port 0,
isolated herdr with a stand-in OpenCode pane and a fixture store;
desktop 1440x900 and phone 390x844): with a running child the composer
status reads BG, the button reads "1 background task", the sidebar's
agent row shows 1, the list shows the child with its agent, model,
steps, tool calls and tokens, and opening it says this PC can't show
details for it. When it ends and the parent is woken, the chat shows the
"Background task ended" card, which opens to the answer, and the badge
goes. A second child left running when the pane stops running OpenCode
is listed as lost.
- `bun run check fast` on the PR head (`e9d83c227`): green, unit 7211
pass, 0 fail.
## After the merge pass's gate (ae1384c, fa86923)
- A poll no longer waits on the event loop:
- the OpenCode service's start is looked up once per service process,
off the loop;
- a poll's store read waits on no writer, and a busy store keeps the
counts as they were;
- a read takes steps of a page each (`SUBAGENT_PAGE`, 1000). A step is a
page of a session's children, or a page of the rows of those it keeps
(the ones still running, and the ten that ended last), or a few listed
children's work. A poll takes the first two steps at once, so a session
of up to 1000 children reads whole as before, and a turn's end still
finds its subagents in the frame that ends it. A larger session is read
a step per turn of the event loop. A pane that leaves its session
meanwhile is told so at once. The longest hold of the event loop is
about 12 ms on 100,000 ended children, and 13 ms on 20,000 running ones.
- Every child whose run has not ended is counted, however many newer
ones ended. Up to 1000 of them are listed, the newest, while the badge
counts them all. The answer then says how many it leaves out
(`more_running` on `GET /api/pane/omo-tasks`, optional and only when
some are), and the list shows "N more running" below the running ones.
The ones that ended are listed by when they ended, newest first.
- The background tasks route answers for what the pane runs after its
list is read. OmO, Claude Code and OpenCode are told again, and the list
is given only if the pane is still bound to the session that was read;
otherwise the route decides again from the current state.
- An OpenCode turn that followed another agent and ended on its subagent
before its session was found reads BG:
- such a reset keeps the rests seen since the pane's first status event
under its new agent (`BackgroundWait.resetBefore`);
- a status event of an OpenCode pane whose session is not known yet
looks the pane up at once, so the finish alert, which waits at least 10
s, is called off;
- a snapshot read begun before that lookup no longer undoes it.
## Reviews
- omo-native-code-reviewer (after the rebase onto #1848 and #1842):
approve, four LOWs. Fixed: a Claude-held wait left behind on a direct
Claude→OpenCode switch, the contract case reading the machine's own
`service.json`, and the guide's wording about lost subagents. Declined:
reading `service.json` on each poll, which `omo.ts` and `prompt.ts` do
the same way.
- Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): two MEDIUMs, both reproduced and fixed: a
session found after its turn ended dropped the turn's rest (DONE while a
child runs), and an incoming Claude session inherited OpenCode's BG hold
because the outgoing tracker's stale state vetoed Claude's reset. The
shared pane mute (#1848) and the detail sheet (#1842) checked out. Codex
Sol review did not run (host stall); the merge pass reviews: its
re-review of these fixes stalled twice before starting.
omo-native-code-reviewer re-reviewed them instead: approve. Of its LOWs,
fixed: a route's Claude lookup between snapshots could still meet the
old veto (a status event's agent now counts too), and a dead test line.
Declined: an OpenCode turn that starts and ends after another agent with
no snapshot in between loses its rest to the reset of the first session,
as Claude's own reset does on main.
- An earlier round before the rebase (omo and Codex) fixed: a run
orphaned by a service crash read running forever, a tracker letting go
of a pane released another agent's BG wait, the child cap applied before
classifying, the home screen kept the binding live, one store open per
pane per poll, a route test pinned to a date, contract frames matched by
index.

What it does for the user
How
GET /api/pane/background-agent?pane_id=&agent_id=(server/background-agent.ts): resolves the pane's Claude session before and after the read (409background_target_changedif it moved), 501 for commands, OmO and other agents, 404 for an unknown agent, 503 for a store it cannot read, 400 for a malformed id. Proxied to remote PCs (MACHINE_PROXY_PATH) and readable by watching devices.backgroundAgentDetail(server/claude-subagents.ts): a bounded, read-only reader of<session>/subagents/agent-<id>.{meta.json,jsonl}beside the session's own transcript. Plain-word ids of up to 128 characters, no links, descriptor identity checks before and after the read, only records of this session's and this agent's sidechain. It reads the first 64 KiB and the last 192 KiB and caps the output at 128 events and 128 KiB, flaggedtruncated/incomplete.shared/tasks.ts:PaneBackgroundAgentDetailandOmoTask.detail_kind.BackgroundTasks/BackgroundAgentDetail: a modal sheet (Escape, scrim, phone Back, focus return); answers to stale reads are dropped by generation. ko/ja/zh strings are insrc/lib/i18n/chat.*. The PR also adds a demo transport route, a DESIGN.md entry and a changelog fragment.Ported from a local branch that was 186 commits behind main, onto the i18n parts, the per-file shared types and the split routes.
This adds a new HTTP route (an HTTP contract change), so it needs a real review.
