feat(split): drop a pane's title on another pane's title of its tab to trade places - #1818
Panes split inside a tab stay where herdr placed them. The web UI can't rearrange them from the mouse: dragging a pane's title only offers to open it in a split view half. This PR lets the title trade places with another pane of the same tab.
What changes
Dragging a pane's title over another pane's title in the same tab highlights that title (.pane-frame-head.is-swap-target). The split view guide is hidden there, so no half is offered.
Dropping it there calls the existing POST /api/pane/swap with target_pane_id (herdr's pane.swap). The roster then reloads.
Only a drag that starts on a pane's own title can swap (read at dragstart).
Dropping anywhere else works as before. A title dropped on a pane's body, or a sidebar row, a tab or a half's bar dropped anywhere, still opens the pane in a half.
"Same tab" is read from the DOM. The slot under the pointer must belong to the dragged pane's PC (data-machine on .pane-slot, new) and must draw the dragged pane among its visible frames. That is the only case herdr swaps. A title in the other half that shows a different tab still docks.
The code lives in useSplitView.ts, next to the existing drop handling. The dragged pane is read at dragstart, because a dragover cannot read the drag's data. App.tsx supplies the swap call.
No server or protocol change. The changelog fragment is changelog.d/pane-title-swap.md, and docs/guide.md gets one sentence.
Verified (iMac, isolated test herdr):
scripts/split-view-regression.ts has a new case: a real mouse drag of the left pane's title onto the right pane's title. The case checks that the target title is marked, no .split-drop is visible, the frames' order flips, herdr's layout has the two swapped, the mark is cleared, and only one .pane-slot remains. A second case drops the workspace's sidebar row on the title of the pane the row doesn't carry: no title is marked, a half opens, and herdr's order stays. I ran checkSplitView alone against a createServer on the isolated herdr: every case passes, the new one and the existing "title drag opens the pane in the other half" case included.
bun run check fast: generated files, typecheck and build pass. Unit tests: 6265 pass, 9 fail. The 9 failures are in check, install-star, remote-entry, request-log, ci-browser and agy tests, which this branch doesn't touch. The same 9 fail on main (aabe566) on this Mac.
Not verified locally: the full check integration browser lane. My standalone runner also ends with close: Target page, context or browser has been closed in checkSplitView's finally, after the last case passes. That happens on main too, so I left it alone.
Related: #1819 is about the next step, putting a pane beside another pane of its tab by dragging. It needs a server route that #1101 removed, so I'd like to ask first.

New Features
Drag one pane’s title onto another pane’s title in the same tab to swap their positions. The target title is highlighted during the drag, and no split-view guide appears for a swap target.
Documentation
Updated the Quick start guide with instructions for swapping panes.
Dropping a pane title onto another pane title in the same tab now swaps the panes. The target heading is marked, and the split guide is suppressed for that drop. The app calls the pane-swap API and reloads the roster on success. A regression test and documentation cover the interaction.
Changes: Pane title swapping
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Track and detect swap targets src/lib/useSplitView.ts, src/components/PaneCanvas.css
The split-view hooks track the dragged pane and mark eligible same-tab pane headings as swap targets. The split guide is suppressed for these targets, and the swap marker clears when the preview ends.
Execute and verify pane swaps src/App.tsx, scripts/split-view-regression.ts, docs/guide.md, changelog.d/pane-title-swap.md
App calls swapPaneWith for a valid title drop, reloads the roster on success, and reports a layout refusal on failure. The regression test checks target marking, pane positions, marker cleanup, and the absence of a split view. The guide and changelog describe the interaction.
A sidebar drag can unexpectedly swap panes. This is a bounded interaction regression that should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Owner decision: is title-to-title pane swapping wanted? CONTRIBUTING.md asks for a maintainer's agreement on a feature issue; this PR does not link one.
At ef94ef4, the earlier sidebar-drag finding is addressed: only a .pane-frame-head drag can swap; sidebar drags still dock. The neighboring split.test.ts and paneDrag.test.ts tests pass (20 tests).
No fix-up or push while the feature scope is undecided.
Review prepared with a code-review agent and checked against the code. The merge decision stays with the maintainer's merge pass.
Merge pass review of ef94ef4 (Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): changes requested. The maintainer approved this feature, so it merges once this is fixed.
What holds:
The same-tab and same-machine guards and the Escape cleanup passed in-memory probes.
It doesn't conflict with the resize handler.
95 focused unit tests pass.
MAJOR: the swap moves herdr's own focus (src/App.tsx:266)
The drop calls herdr's native pane.swap. That focuses the source pane and makes its workspace and tab active (herdr's implementation).
So if herdr is showing workspace X while the browser rearranges workspace Y, dropping A onto B switches herdr to Y and A. This was confirmed against the demo transport.
AGENTS.md: "Selecting a pane or tab in the browser never moves herdr's own focus; only an explicit action that needs it calls pane.focus." A drag that rearranges panes isn't a request to focus.
Needed:
Keep herdr's focus where it was. For example, read the focused pane before the swap and restore it afterwards, or use a swap that doesn't focus, if herdr has one.
Add a regression test that starts with herdr focused elsewhere.
MINOR:
src/components/PaneCanvas.tsx:280: the menu doesn't work as a keyboard or touch alternative. Focusing or tapping B's ellipsis selects B, so "Swap with focused pane" disappears, and dragging a title by touch is disabled. This predates the PR, so a follow-up is fine.
DESIGN.md:1340: the section covers swapping from the context menu, but not the title drop, the docking fallback or the effect on herdr. It also needs the design precedent src/AGENTS.md asks for, meaning which app does this, or why Ovis differs.
Merge pass, second review: the code review (omo-native-code-reviewer) passed.
The split-view check fails without the change, and passes at the head on an isolated herdr 0.9.5.
Swaps stay within one tab on the same PC.
The existing split cases all pass.
Its focus probe started with the dragged pane already focused in herdr, so it could not catch the case Codex reproduced above, where herdr is focused elsewhere. That MAJOR still blocks the merge, and the reviewer noted the same gap: the test does not assert that herdr's focused pane is unchanged.
Please also, in the same commit:
MEDIUM: update the pane-canvas entry at DESIGN.md:1335-1342 with the title-drop behaviour and its precedent.
LOW:App.tsx:265 silently ignores a changed:false answer from herdr.
Thanks for contributing the pane-title swap feature. I rebased the two contributor commits onto current main, preserving their authorship, and added the merge-pass fixes in ac16a48:
MAJOR, focus: explicit swaps now capture herdr's focused pane on the server and restore it before replying, preserving its pane, active tab, and workspace when the browser rearranges another workspace. The native swap schema has no no-focus option. The contract regression also covers refused swaps.
LOW, refusal feedback: a title drop receiving changed:false now shows a localized layout notice containing herdr's reason instead of silently doing nothing.
MEDIUM, design: the pane-canvas entry in DESIGN.md now covers title-drop eligibility and highlighting, the existing docking fallback, herdr focus preservation, and the precedent: tmux's explicit swap-pane operation exposed through title-drop targets like VS Code editor groups.
Verification:
Captured the new isolated focus regression failing before the fix: expected the other workspace's pane w3:p1, received the swapped pane w2:p1.
Pane-canvas contracts: 5 passed, 0 failed, including focused-pane/tab/workspace preservation across successful swaps and refusals.
Focused split, pane-drag, and i18n unit tests: 42 passed, 0 failed.
dori heavy ext-pr-fixes -- bun run check fast: exit 0, 6,803 unit tests passed, 0 failed, 13 skipped; workflow syntax, generated files, typechecking, and build passed.
CHECK_WAIT_SECONDS=1800 dori heavy ext-pr-fixes -- bun run check run --build bun scripts/ui-contexts-regression.ts: exit 0, including all split-view cases, real title swapping while herdr is focused elsewhere, visible refusal reasons, and the sidebar-to-title docking fallback. Both check reports recorded unchanged source fingerprints.
Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, fast service tier, xhigh), reviewing only the maintainer delta: no HIGH/MAJOR findings.
Follow-up, intentionally outside this PR's fix scope: the pre-existing keyboard/touch menu alternative for "Swap with focused pane" still needs work; focusing or tapping the target's ellipsis selects it and removes that option, while touch title dragging remains disabled.
The earlier sidebar-drag review thread was already resolved; there were no unresolved threads requiring a reply. No merge was performed.
Fixes prepared by a maintainer agent and checked against the code. The merge decision stays with the maintainer's merge pass.
Merge pass re-review of ac16a48 (Codex Sol, gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): changes requested. The sequential case works now, but restoring focus in paneSwapWith with a separate snapshot, swap and focus call doesn't hold up in two places.
Fixed:
A sequential swap leaves herdr's focus on X, checked through the production wrapper and the demo transport.
If the source or the target was the focused pane, it keeps focus.
server/pane-canvas.contract.test.ts:84 and scripts/split-view-regression.ts:455 assert that the pane, tab and workspace ids are unchanged, including on refusals.
110 focused unit and convention tests pass, and typecheck is clean.
MAJOR 1: two overlapping swaps leave the wrong pane focused (server/herdr/client.ts:779)
Codex reproduced two overlapping swaps. The second one snapshots the first one's temporary focus in Y. Their restores then run X → Y, so Y ends up focused.
The unconditional finally also overwrites focus the user moved meanwhile, even after changed:false.
Needed:
Serialise focus-preserving swaps in the server, for example with a promise chain per herdr socket.
Restore focus only when the swap actually changed something.
MAJOR 2: a failed restore turns a committed swap into an error (server/herdr/client.ts:785)
Codex injected pane_not_found during the restore. The request answered HTTP 404 even though the layout had already changed. src/App.tsx:272 only logs it, and retrying swaps the panes back.
Needed: once pane.swap has succeeded, return its result. Treat the restore as best effort: log it, or add a field like focus_restored: false. Never throw.
MINOR: the restore can pull the browser off the tab (src/App.tsx:269)
With "Follow herdr focus" on and no active editor or draft, the restore's pane-focused(X) event selects X.
Needed: guard the swap request the same way other focus-moving actions are (movingHerdrFocus).
Alternative: if herdr's pane.swap takes focus: false, as pane.move does, all three go away. Check herdr's PaneSwapParams before building the server-side workaround.
These need a test for overlapping swaps and one for a failed restore. Neither should use fixed sleeps.
Round 2 is addressed in ee96026, checked against the merge pass's re-review.
MAJOR 1, overlapping swaps: explicit focus-preserving swaps now run in a promise chain per herdr socket, including the initial snapshot and restoration. Another socket remains independent. Restoration runs only after changed: true, and only when the current focus still belongs to the swapped source, so an intervening user focus choice is respected. Refusals and native swap failures do not restore focus.
MAJOR 2, failed restoration: restoration is best effort. A failed post-swap snapshot or focus restore is logged, while the committed swap's successful answer is returned. The queue remains usable after both restoration and native swap failures.
MINOR, browser following the restore:swapPaneWith now uses movingHerdrFocus for the selected PC. The browser regression enables Follow herdr focus, holds the HTTP answer while the focus events arrive, and observes a later roster event before asserting that the rearranged tab remains visible. It uses event/state signals, not fixed sleeps.
Native alternative checked: the checked-in PaneSwapParams schema has no focus: false option. This retains the existing tmux-style explicit swap and VS Code-style title-drop interaction documented in DESIGN.md.
Verification:
bun test server/herdr/seam.test.ts src/lib/api.test.ts: 28 passed, 0 failed, 208 assertions. Both new server regressions were confirmed red with serialization and best-effort restoration disabled: overlap opened the second snapshot connection prematurely, and failed restoration rejected with pane_not_found. After restoring the fixes, the complete targeted run passed.
dori heavy ext-pr-fixes -- bun run check run bun test --timeout 15000 server/pane-canvas.contract.test.ts: 5 passed, 0 failed, 49 assertions, on an isolated herdr.
Committed-tree dori heavy ext-pr-fixes -- bun run check fast: exit 0, 6,804 passed, 0 failed, 13 skipped across 471 files. Workflow syntax, generated files, typecheck and build also passed. The report verifies the unchanged clean source at ee96026.
dori heavy ext-pr-fixes -- env TMPDIR=<temporary directory under /tmp> bun run check run --build bun scripts/ui-contexts-regression.ts: exit 0 on ee96026, with a fresh build and unchanged source. This includes the real title swap, focus preservation, refusal notice, and sidebar-to-title docking regressions, along with the full contexts suite. The temporary directory was removed.
Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) reviewed ac16a4874..ee96026e6: VERDICT: PASS; no reproduced HIGH/MAJOR findings. It passed 29 API/follow-focus tests and deterministic in-memory queue/restore checks. Its sandbox prohibited socket listeners (EPERM), so socket and browser verification comes from the successful host runs above.
Local checks used Bun 1.4.3 and Node 24.18.0 (the runner notes CI uses Node 22); herdr-backed checks used the Node PTY fallback because the Rust host was not built in this worktree. No additional push was needed: GitHub already reports ee96026 as the PR head.
Thanks for the contribution.
Fixes prepared by a maintainer agent and checked against the code. The merge decision stays with the maintainer's merge pass.
Merge pass re-review of ac16a48..ee96026: one more change. omo-native-code-reviewer passed the range with LOW findings only. Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) requested changes.
Fixed (both reviewers agree):
Overlapping swaps: the earlier overlapping-swap reproduction now keeps X. Explicit swaps are queued per socket, and the queue recovers after a rejection.
Restore failure: a restore that fails after a committed swap keeps the new geometry, answers HTTP 200 with changed: true, and logs a warning.
Herdr focus: against an isolated real herdr, pane-canvas.contract.test.ts passes 5/5. Its focus test fails when client.ts is put back to 0bde2dc. Removing any single fix turns its test red, and nothing uses fixed sleeps.
MAJOR: the restore can still overwrite newer focus (server/herdr/client.ts:786-789)
Reproduced: snapshot(A) → paneFocus(user choice) → restore(X). It also reproduces with a directional swap in place of paneFocus.
Why: those callers bypass the explicit-swap queue, and the snapshot check and the restore are still separate RPCs. The code reviewer saw the same gap (its LOW-3).
Needed: send every Ovis call that changes herdr's focus through the same per-socket queue: paneFocus, directional paneSwap, and the explicit swap. Then no Ovis caller can slip between the check and the restore. A focus change made in herdr's own TUI in that window can't be closed from Ovis. Note that limit in DESIGN.md.
MINOR 1 (src/lib/api.ts:592): while the request is pending, the guard drops legitimate same-PC focus events and never replays them, so follow-focus stays on the old pane.
MINOR 2 (src/lib/api.ts:590): a restore event that arrives after the HTTP answer gets past the guard and still moves the browser to X. The HTTP answer doesn't mean the separate event stream has drained. The code reviewer's LOW-2 says the existing split guard has the same race.
For both: replace the time-boxed guard with a one-shot filter for the exact restore event. The server can return focus_restored_to in the swap answer. The client then ignores the next pane-focused event for that pane, within a short bound, and lets every other event through.
Optional (LOW, from the code review):
The "refused swap" test (seam.test.ts:155) can't detect removal of result.swap.changed &&.
The notice shows herdr's raw code, such as cross_tab (src/App.tsx:270).
i18n.ko.ts:246 says "창" where the rest of the file says "패널".
Root fix: if herdr's pane.swap gets a focus: false option, as pane.move has, all of this goes away. That request belongs upstream, and this PR doesn't need to wait for it.
Round 3 uses the lead-approved option B in df07974: one new commit directly on the previously pushed ee96026, authored by mp. The unpushed client-filter and sequence commits were dropped from the branch.
Server queue and focus preservation: pane focus, directional and explicit swaps, split, zoom, pane/tab/workspace close, and worktree removal use the same per-herdr-socket queue. An explicit swap's snapshot, native swap, focus recheck and raw restore RPC remain inside one queue operation. A newer Ovis focus choice therefore runs after restoration and wins; the raw restore does not recursively enqueue itself.
Committed swaps stay committed: restore runs only after a real layout change and only while focus still belongs to the swapped source. A failed restore is logged, but the HTTP answer remains 200 with changed:true. A refused swap does not recheck or restore focus. DESIGN.md retains the limitation that Ovis cannot close a focus change made in herdr's own TUI between the final check and restore.
Cheap LOWs retained: the refusal regression detects removal of result.swap.changed &&; notices show localized human reasons rather than raw codes, with Korean/Japanese/Simplified Chinese entries; Korean uses "패널", not "창".
Client decision and visible limitations: the client keeps the round-2 request-only movingHerdrFocus guard exactly as in ee96026. There is no hold/replay/token/sequence filter and no new shared WS/HTTP protocol field. Six ordering failure cases defeated the attempted client-only filter. Native herdr focus events carry no RPC correlation, so the server cannot tell the restore event apart from an older unread genuine event merely by stamping a number. A guessed identity could drop a genuine user choice; a field that is always null would add contract cost without a real-user benefit.
With Follow herdr focus enabled, a focus event that arrives while a swap is pending can be ignored, and a restore event that arrives after the reply can still move the browser to the restored pane. Those are accepted limitations of this PR, not claims of an exact client filter. Follow-up: Drop only the restore event after a focus-preserving pane swap #1950, pursuing native pane.swap focus:false or an upstream correlated event identifier.
Regression verification: 72 targeted tests passed, 0 failed, 323 assertions across five files, through dori heavy. The tests cover overlapping swaps preserving the original focus, independent sockets, paneFocus and directional-swap choices made after the restore snapshot, refusal without restoration, HTTP 200/changed:true after failed restore, and a usable queue after failure. The new queue/refusal regressions were confirmed red before their original fixes. Contract polling was replaced with exact event subscriptions and authoritative RPC reads; no fixed sleeps were added.
Codex Sol: PASS, reviewing ee96026..577a2d979 (the subsequent authorized amendment to df07974 changes only contract-test isolation) with the requested server queue/restore scope and the accepted round-2 client guard decision. Its 58 collector tests and 23 deterministic in-memory queue/restore probes passed, covering all nine queued operations, failure recovery and socket independence. Its sandbox could not listen on test sockets (EPERM); the host-side targeted and contract runs cover that integration.
Contract failure and base comparison: a stale anotherTab focus event from an earlier test satisfied the new waiter. The event-driven test reused pane IDs while older frames were still unread; it could therefore observe [anotherTab, root] instead of [root, anotherTab]. This became visible with this PR's replacement of polling delays by direct event waits, and was not unique to B's server queue. In a separate worktree on ee96026, the untouched original contract passed 5/5 (it polls and checks only that anotherTab appears); copying the exact pre-isolation event-driven test onto that base server reproduced the same stale-event assertion failure, 4 passed/1 failed. The authorized test-only amendment uses two fresh, never-focused panes, still in separate tabs, so old frames cannot satisfy either waiter. On df07974, the contract then passed twice, 5/5 each, 52 assertions each, with no sleeps.
The merge pass still needs to give the server queue/restore delta its real review before merging. No new WS/HTTP field is introduced by option B.
Final committed gates on df07974:dori heavy ext-pr-fixes -- bun run check fast exited 0: generated types/themes, workflow syntax, typecheck and build passed; 6,804 unit tests passed, 0 failed, 13 skipped, 247,377 assertions across 471 files. Report: e0e0d9af-3220-4217-90ef-f22984c01028. Unit workers were set to the repository-supported count of one: the earlier eight-worker run hit an unchanged scripts/check.test.ts:663 wall-clock assertion (1,514.6 ms against <1,500 ms); neither that test nor the check runner was changed. The two committed pane-canvas runs are caec9cb1-5e9b-4ee7-8efd-633b42cf03cd and 780c17f0-2860-43a5-9885-719f7ae79d2a.
The fresh-build ui-contexts-regression.ts browser run through dori heavy, with TMPDIR under /tmp, exited 0, including real title drag/swaps preserving herdr focus, localized refusal notices, split selection/input isolation and phone layout. Report: c49eaf2c-6aa1-4d35-b096-d195e5e75803, built-this-run artifact unchanged after checks. Both disposable base worktrees were removed without stash; the browser wrapper stopped its owned test session and its temporary directory was removed.
The requested two additional base repeats were both red: the first reproduced the identical stale-event ordering assertion (4 passed/1 failed, 52 assertions); the second timed out waiting for a focus event (4 passed/1 failed, 51 assertions). The base server has no focusReady acknowledgement, so that timeout is not claimed as the same ordering failure. Taken with the first comparison, the stale-event assertion itself was reproduced twice on base server code. The evidence points to an event-driven test isolation problem exposed by the harness timing, not a B-only queue regression.
Thanks for the contribution.

…o trade places
The canvas's title drag opens its pane in a half. Over another pane's title in the same tab it now
marks that title instead, offers no half, and a drop there asks herdr's pane.swap for the two.

The only conflict was the src/App.tsx import block. I retained main's MarkdownLinkMenu import together with this PR's SplitTarget import. The <MarkdownLinkMenu /> mount/link-sheet wiring, swapPaneWith title-swap handler and localized refusal notices are all retained. Compared with the previous pushed App, the only additions are main's link-menu import and mount. git range-diff confirms no other patch change; all five existing commits and their authors were preserved.

Merge pass review-work report. Overall: PASSED. This outside contribution changes ordinary client and server behaviour, so it was reviewed by Codex Sol (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh) and omo-native-code-reviewer (claude-opus-5-5). The maintainer approved merging it. The ext-pr-fixes lane made the fixes.
Every Ovis call that can move herdr's focus goes through one queue per herdr socket: focus, split, zoom, both swaps, pane/tab/workspace close, and worktree.remove. Create and open calls pass focus: false.
The restore runs only after a swap that really changed something, and it uses a raw RPC inside the queued action, so it can't deadlock.
Rejections are swallowed, so the queue can't get stuck.
A failed restore is logged, and the swap still answers 200 with changed: true.
Refusal text: refusal reasons are localized, and Korean says "패널".
Tests:
The seam and api tests pass 31/31.
pane-canvas.contract.test.ts passes 5/5 on an isolated herdr.
Each fix has a test that fails without it (six mutations). No fixed sleeps.
Accepted limits:
Client focus filter: herdr's native focus events carry no correlation, so the server can't tell which event is its own restore. That's why the exact client-side filter couldn't be built here. The browser keeps the round-2 movingHerdrFocus guard, which has the same race as the existing split guard: it can drop a legitimate focus event while a request is pending, and a late restore event can escape it. The exact filter is tracked in Drop only the restore event after a focus-preserving pane swap #1950.
herdr TUI: a focus change made in herdr's own TUI between the restore check and the restore can't be ordered by Ovis. DESIGN.md documents this.
Rebase onto 97dfe26 (971a9d0):#1925 had conflicted in src/App.tsx. This PR's net diff against main is identical, line for line, before and after the rebase, so the round-4 approvals still apply. The seam and api tests pass 31/31. Typecheck is clean, git merge-tree is clean, and there are 0 unresolved threads.
CI note: at 971a9d0, scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts failed twice in CI because the Settings dialog didn't appear within 30 s. The same script passed in full locally on this head under load-limited QA, with all 12 checks passing, including 47 searches at 1440 and 390 px. The failed jobs were re-run on the same head.
CodeRabbit did not review this PR (rate-limited or skipped). The reviews above stand in for it.
…t beside that pane (#2915)
Fixes#1819
A pane's title can already trade places with another title of its tab
(#1818), but a swap keeps the tab's shape: two panes side by side could
not become two stacked panes without herdr's TUI. This PR lets the title
put its pane beside another pane of its tab, on any side.
**What changes**
- Dragging a pane's title over **another pane's body in the same tab**
outlines the half of that pane the dragged pane would take, from the
nearest edge (left, right, up, down). The split view guide stays hidden
there. Dropping puts the pane there.
- Each edge's distance counts as a share of the pane's width or height,
so each side takes a quarter of a pane of any shape. Where two shares
meet, the side already shown stays (5% band), as the halves do around
the middle.
- Over the dragged pane itself nothing is offered: the pointer shows "no
drop", and a drop does nothing.
- Unchanged: a title over another pane's **title** still swaps (#1818).
A title over the other half showing a different tab, or over a canvas
drawing one pane, still opens a half. A sidebar row, a tab or a half's
bar dropped anywhere still opens a half. So a drag within the tab
arranges it, and a drag that brings a pane in opens split view, as the
issue proposed.
- A PC whose layout the Herdr app owns (herdr-core with `arrange:
false`) keeps today's behaviour: its titles dock, as they already do for
swaps.
**Server: `POST /api/pane/move { pane_id, target_pane_id, side }` → `{
ok, changed, reason }`**
- herdr 0.9.5 refuses `pane.move` into the pane's own tab (`changed:
false, reason: "same_tab"`) and places a moved pane only right of or
below its target. I measured both on an isolated herdr. So
`paneMoveBeside` (server/herdr/client.ts):
1. asks for the move into the tab first. A herdr that allows it, and
herdr-core, finish here.
2. On `same_tab`, it moves the pane to a new tab of its own workspace,
then back beside the target. The pane keeps its ID and terminal, and
herdr closes the passing tab itself.
3. For left or up it swaps the two.
- It runs in the per-socket focus queue that swaps already use. Moving
herdr's focused pane leaves herdr's focus on a sibling (measured), and a
swap focuses its source. So the bridge puts herdr's focus back where it
was, unless something else took it meanwhile.
- `changed: false` means nothing moved: `same_pane` or `cross_tab`. An
unknown pane answers `pane_not_found`, even one named as both panes. If
herdr will not bring the pane back beside its target (refused, failed,
or a lost answer to the move out), it goes back into its tab, beside the
target or else any other pane of the tab, and the answer is an error
that says so. Only if every pane refuses does the error say it waits in
a tab of its own. If herdr refuses the swap for left or up, or the swap
fails, the answer is `changed: true` with a reason: the pane stays right
of or below its target.
- herdr-core: the adapter's `pane.move` now takes a `tab` destination
within the pane's own tab. It is one edit of Ovis's layout document,
using `splitLeaf`, the tree edit a split uses. Another tab is refused as
`unsupported`.
- The route reaches a remote PC (`MACHINE_PROXY_PATH`; `pane/move` had
been locked out since #1101 removed the old cross-workspace route) and
the demo transport.
- The browser holds herdr focus frames while the request runs
(`movingHerdrFocus`), as for a swap. Refusals and errors reuse existing
strings ("Move failed: {reason}"). A refused or failed swap says "The
pane moved to the right instead." or "The pane moved below instead."
(`paneMoveNotice`), two new strings with ko, ja and zh entries.
**Design reference** (src/AGENTS.md): this follows VS Code's
editor-group drop overlay (the half a dragged editor would take, chosen
by the nearest edge), without its centre target: a pane joins no other
pane, and its title is already the swap target. DESIGN.md has the entry.
docs/guide.md gets two sentences. The changelog fragment is
`changelog.d/pane-title-move-beside.md`.

**Validation**
- Failing first: the new unit tests in `server/herdr/seam.test.ts`,
`server/herdr-core/adapter.test.ts`, `src/lib/split.test.ts`,
`src/lib/api.test.ts`, `server/machines.test.ts` and
`scripts/demo-pane-layout.test.ts` failed before the code (6 failures:
missing exports, proxy path, demo route). They pass after it: 209 pass,
0 fail.
- `bun run check fast`: pass on the head, d517453, which contains
origin/main 26473ca (workflow syntax, generated files, typecheck,
build, unit tests).
- Review round (2e9eba2; details in the PR comment): a pane herdr will
not bring back beside its target returns to its tab, the focus restore
no longer overrides a pane the user focuses meanwhile, and a refused
swap is reported. The three new seam tests fail on 589c3ae and pass
after the fix.
- On an isolated herdr 0.9.5 (`bun run check run`):
`server/pane-canvas.contract.test.ts` passes, including two new tests.
They cover all four sides, the pane's ID and terminal kept, no tab left
behind, and herdr's focus kept (on another workspace, on the moved pane,
and on the target); then same_pane, cross_tab and pane_not_found.
`server/route-envelope.contract.test.ts` and the `api.contract.test.ts`
malformed-body table, with four new move rows, also pass.
- `checkSplitView` (`scripts/split-view-regression.ts`) run alone
against a `createServer` on the isolated herdr, after `--build`: every
case passes. The title-drag case is rewritten for the new behaviour.
With a real mouse drag, it checks that the mark shows on the target's
half and not over the dragged pane, that no split guide shows, that
`/api/pane/move` is posted with the shown side, that herdr's layout has
the pane below and then left of its target, and that the moved pane
stays selected. A new step checks that a title dropped on the other half
showing another tab still opens there. The swap cases from #1818 pass
unchanged.
- Not run locally: the full `check integration browser` lane (CI runs
it), Native Windows, and macOS.
- Review round 2 (f5571a9, CodeRabbit's 11 threads; details in the PR
comment): 8 fixed, each with a test that failed before it (seam,
`src/lib/layoutTree.test.ts`, `scripts/demo-pane-layout.test.ts`, the
new `src/lib/useLayoutNotice.test.ts`); 3 answered as residuals. The
demo now moves through `moveLayoutPane` (`src/lib/layoutTree.ts`), which
measures the target's room after the pane has left the tree and clears
the tab's zoom.
- `bun run check fast` after round 2: pass on 58030a2, which contains
origin/main 00421a3 (workflow syntax, generated types and themes,
typecheck, build; unit 11941 pass, 0 fail, 46 skip). Not rerun after
round 2: the real-herdr contract tests and `checkSplitView`.
This PR adds an HTTP route (`POST /api/pane/move`), so per AGENTS.md it
waits for a real review.

Panes split inside a tab stay where herdr placed them. The web UI can't rearrange them from the mouse: dragging a pane's title only offers to open it in a split view half. This PR lets the title trade places with another pane of the same tab.
What changes
.pane-frame-head.is-swap-target). The split view guide is hidden there, so no half is offered.POST /api/pane/swapwithtarget_pane_id(herdr'spane.swap). The roster then reloads.dragstart).data-machineon.pane-slot, new) and must draw the dragged pane among its visible frames. That is the only case herdr swaps. A title in the other half that shows a different tab still docks.useSplitView.ts, next to the existing drop handling. The dragged pane is read atdragstart, because a dragover cannot read the drag's data.App.tsxsupplies the swap call.No server or protocol change. The changelog fragment is
changelog.d/pane-title-swap.md, anddocs/guide.mdgets one sentence.Verified (iMac, isolated test herdr):
scripts/split-view-regression.tshas a new case: a real mouse drag of the left pane's title onto the right pane's title. The case checks that the target title is marked, no.split-dropis visible, the frames' order flips, herdr's layout has the two swapped, the mark is cleared, and only one.pane-slotremains. A second case drops the workspace's sidebar row on the title of the pane the row doesn't carry: no title is marked, a half opens, and herdr's order stays. I rancheckSplitViewalone against acreateServeron the isolated herdr: every case passes, the new one and the existing "title drag opens the pane in the other half" case included.bun run check fast: generated files, typecheck and build pass. Unit tests: 6265 pass, 9 fail. The 9 failures are incheck,install-star,remote-entry,request-log,ci-browserandagytests, which this branch doesn't touch. The same 9 fail onmain(aabe566) on this Mac.Not verified locally: the full
check integration browserlane. My standalone runner also ends withclose: Target page, context or browser has been closedincheckSplitView'sfinally, after the last case passes. That happens onmaintoo, so I left it alone.Related: #1819 is about the next step, putting a pane beside another pane of its tab by dragging. It needs a server route that #1101 removed, so I'd like to ask first.
