Change

Fixes #856. Split out of #859 by @RikiSanjayaa, who reported it and first worked out what Hermes needs.

The Stop button in a Hermes pane's chat didn't stop Hermes. The chat's Stop sends Escape, and Hermes ignores a lone Escape: its classic CLI binds it as an Alt prefix, and its TUI interrupts only on a double Escape. Hermes' own interrupt key is Ctrl+C. But Ctrl+C also quits an idle Hermes, and the classic CLI force-quits on a second press within 2 s (hermes_cli/cli_tui_mixin.py _tui_handle_ctrl_c; TUI resolveCtrlCComposerAction). So for a Hermes pane, Stop now:

  • sends one Ctrl+C, and only while Hermes' own input row shows a running turn: the classic CLI's msg=interrupt · … · Ctrl+C cancel or the TUI's Ctrl+C to interrupt…. Only the bottom-most ❯ row of the screen is read, so the same text quoted in the transcript above it never counts.
  • sends it once per working turn: a second click, or Escape held down in the composer, sends nothing until the pane leaves working.
  • sends nothing otherwise, and says so ("Not stopped: Hermes does not show a turn to interrupt. Check the terminal."), rather than risk quitting it.

Every other agent still gets Escape. There is no new endpoint or protocol change: it is stopKey in src/lib/hermesStop.ts, called from PaneTerminal's abortTurn.

What this leaves out of #859's design: Stop claims are not shared across clients. Two devices pressing Stop within the same 2 s could still send two Ctrl+C. The screen check usually stops the second one, because Hermes drops the hint as soon as it interrupts, but that isn't guaranteed.

Validation

Run against a real Hermes 0.21.5 in an isolated herdr session, through the real web UI in Chrome (Playwright), with HERMES_HOME copied to a temp dir:

  • main (79beb36), classic CLI: Chat sent a long essay request and status went working. Stop was clicked, and 6 s and 15 s later the status was still working with the screen still streaming. The bug reproduces.
  • herdr pane send-keys ctrl+c while it was working: idle 630 ms later, ⚡ Interrupted during API call., Hermes still running. The same key at an idle, empty prompt exited Hermes, which is why the guard exists.
  • This branch, classic CLI: Stop clicked twice in a row: idle 885 ms after the first click, interrupted, Hermes still running (no force-quit).
  • This branch, TUI (hermes --tui): Stop: idle 432 ms later, · interrupted, Hermes still running.
  • A draft typed into a busy Hermes hides its hint. herdr itself then reports the pane idle, so no Stop is offered and no key is sent.
  • src/lib/hermesStop.test.ts uses the real captured rows. Each of three mutations fails it: any row counting, ignoring the once-per-turn flag, and Escape for Hermes.
  • bun run check fast: ok (3775 pass, 0 fail).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • The Stop action now sends one Ctrl+C to Hermes only when a running turn is visible, avoiding accidental exits when Hermes is idle.
    • If Hermes does not show an interruptible turn, the app reports that it was not stopped and prompts you to check the terminal.
    • Other agents continue to use Escape to stop.

The Stop action now selects a key based on the agent and visible terminal state. For Hermes, it sends Ctrl+C only when the input row shows a running turn and no interrupt was already sent for that turn.

Changes: Hermes Chat Stop

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect interruptible turns
src/lib/hermesStop.ts, src/lib/hermesStop.test.ts
hermesInterruptible checks the bottom-most input row for supported running-turn hints. stopKey selects Escape for other agents and Ctrl+C only for an un-interrupted, visible Hermes turn. Tests cover busy and idle screens, drafts, and key selection.
Wire detection into the Stop action
src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx, src/lib/i18n.*.ts, changelog.d/hermes-chat-stop.md
PaneTerminal uses stopKey, reports when no Hermes turn is visible to interrupt, and resets its sent-key state when work ends or the pane changes. The translations and changelog describe the message and stop behavior.

Stop in a Hermes pane could send a second Ctrl+C if the pane status changes to blocked mid-turn, which could quit Hermes. The trigger is narrow, and fixing the guard reset is a small change.

Explanation

Issue #856 requires one interrupt per observed Hermes turn across all clients of the same bridge, including pending or unconfirmed feedback. The implementation tracks sentThisTurn inside each PaneTerminal instance. The PR description also states that Stop claims are not shared across clients. Therefore, two clients can send two Ctrl+C inputs within one turn. The implementation does satisfy the other evidenced requirements: it detects the bottom-most Hermes input hint, sends one Ctrl+C for a local turn, avoids idle Hermes exit, keeps other agents on Escape, and does not add retries or force-exit escalation.

Resolution

Add shared bridge or pane state that claims a Hermes interrupt turn atomically across clients. Keep the claim until the observed turn ends, including pending or unconfirmed feedback. Send at most one Ctrl+C for that shared turn. Preserve the existing idle guard and the existing behavior for other agents and direct Terminal input.

2357-2365: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

A second Stop click after the first gives no feedback.

After Ctrl+C is sent, hermesStopSentRef.current is true. A second click makes stopKey return null. The branch at Line 2363 then skips setInputError because the flag is set. The click does nothing and shows nothing. This matches the PR requirement for "pending or unconfirmed feedback" only weakly.

Consider a distinct message such as "Stop already sent" for this case.

Comment thread src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx Resolved
The per-turn Stop guard resets on idle/done/unknown, so status flicker or a quick new turn could send Hermes a second Ctrl+C inside its 2 s force-quit window. Keep a per-pane time of the last Ctrl+C and have stopKey refuse another within 2 s.

## Change

Follow-up to #1148, the same fix as #1149 applied to Stop.
`hermesInterruptible` took the row's **last** `❯` for Hermes' prompt. A
draft that itself contains `❯` and Hermes' busy hint (`❯ note ❯ Ctrl+C
to interrupt…`) therefore read as a running turn, and Stop would send
Ctrl+C. On an idle Hermes, that clears the user's draft, or exits Hermes
when the input is empty. The prompt is now the row's **first** `❯`, and
anything after it is input.

## Validation

- A new `hermesStop.test.ts` case (a draft quoting the TUI hint, and one
quoting the classic hint) fails on `main` and passes with this change.
The existing cases with real captured rows, both interfaces' busy and
idle rows, still pass.
- `bun run check fast`: ok.
