Refs #595

Change

Item 1 of #595: the shared proxy failure budget (sharedFailures in server/auth.ts) grew one entry for every distinct loopback peer and never shrank.

  • Root cause. server/auth.ts:150 declares sharedFailures, and recordFailure (server/auth.ts:186-188 on main) does sharedFailures.set(key, …) for every "<channel> via <peer>" key. Stale timestamps were only filtered inside one key's own array, and no key was ever deleted. A local process connecting from rotating 127.x.y.z source addresses with an X-Forwarded-For header could grow the map without limit (20,480 entries in the test below). The per-client map authAttempts and admitted were already capped at AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX (1024).
  • Fix. After each recorded failure, trimSharedFailures() drops every key whose failures have all left the 10-minute window. If the map still holds more than AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX keys, it evicts the oldest keys in insertion order. This is the same bound and eviction order authAttempts uses. A hold that is still active behaves as before, because only keys with nothing left in the window are swept. Only an attacker with more than 1024 live loopback keys can push an older key out, and that requires a process already running on the PC.
  • AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX is exported and a sharedFailuresSize() accessor is added so the test can observe the bound.

Not in this PR

  • Items 2 and 3 of Follow-ups from #592: loopback token budget key, focus-trap stacking order, focus after Add PC #595 (focus-trap order follows mount order; no initial focus after Add PC closes over a trap) are not changed. Neither was reproduced in the shipped app: no current dialog that mounts earlier is shown above a later one, and closing Add PC returns focus to the trap unless its focused element was removed meanwhile. That is why this PR uses Refs, not Fixes.
  • The shared key is still per loopback source address, as the issue's item 1 discusses. This PR bounds the memory and does not merge all loopback peers into one key.

Evidence

  • Regression (fails on main): server/auth.test.ts › "bounds shared failure keys after many distinct peers" records one wrong token from each of AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX * 20 distinct loopback peers and asserts sharedFailuresSize() <= AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX.
    • Before: with main's server/auth.ts, the file does not load (AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX is not exported). With this branch's file minus only the trimSharedFailures() call, the case fails with Expected: <= 1024, Received: 20480.
    • After: the case passes.
  • Control: the 14 existing cases in server/auth.test.ts (per-address waits, the shared budget and its admitted bypass, authClient, sameOrigin) pass unchanged.
  • The worst-case cost is about 0.05 ms per recorded failure, measured with the map full at 1024 keys holding 50 timestamps each.

Checks run

  • bun run typecheck: ok.
  • HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/auth.test.ts: 15 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun run test:unit: 3516 pass, 0 fail, 8 skip in 285 files.
  • bun run check fast: ok (workflow syntax, generated types, typecheck, build, unit tests).
  • server/api.contract.test.ts on an isolated herdr session: all token-auth, token-gate and pairing cases pass. Pane-cwd cases failed in this environment (3 to 4 of them, varying by run): tab cwd, file search, image path. They fail the same way with main's server/auth.ts, so they come from the local environment, not this change.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Shared authentication failure tracking now stays bounded when forwarded client addresses change. Expired records are cleared, and excess records are removed to keep tracking within a fixed limit. This prevents the bookkeeping from growing indefinitely as new addresses appear.

Shared authentication failure bookkeeping now removes entries whose failures have expired and limits the map to AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX entries. A regression test checks the limit when failures are recorded for distinct forwarded client addresses.

Changes: Shared authentication failure limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cap shared failure bookkeeping
server/auth.ts, server/auth.test.ts, changelog.d/auth-shared-failures-cap.md
AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX is exported, and sharedFailuresSize() reports the shared-failure map size. After recording a failure, expired entries are removed; oldest entries are then removed if the map exceeds the cap. A regression test checks the limit across distinct forwarded client addresses. The changelog describes the bounded bookkeeping.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3f08d

At the 1,024-key limit, a recently failing client can temporarily regain its shared authentication budget if its key is evicted before expiry. This requires many distinct loopback peers, so the risk is narrow; correct the eviction ordering before merging.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The expiry sweep scans the whole map on every failure.

trimSharedFailures iterates every entry and runs every on each one for every recorded failure. The map is capped at 1024 entries, so the cost is bounded. This is acceptable. If failure rates grow, consider running the sweep only when sharedFailures.size > AUTH_CLIENTS_MAX.

Comment thread server/auth.ts Resolved
…d budget is full

A full map evicted by first insertion, so a proxy whose hold had just started could be dropped for a newer key. Re-insert a key on each failure so the one quiet longest goes first (CodeRabbit on server/auth.ts:202).
