Android: connection never succeeds; bottom action bar taps (even arrow keys) open the IME #3274
Desktop herdr: running and reachable on the same network
Summary
Two issues make the mobile experience unusable for me, so I've had to stop using it for now:
Connection never establishes. After install, the app can never connect to the desktop herdr. Repeated attempts all fail despite the desktop side running normally, same network, and setup done per the docs. Happy to provide logs if helpful.
Bottom action bar triggers the IME. On the main screen, tapping any button in the bottom action bar — even the arrow keys, which are pure key input — unexpectedly opens the input method keyboard. The keyboard then covers the content and has to be dismissed every time, which makes the high-frequency button workflow impractical.
Combined, these two make the Android app effectively unusable. I'd be glad to retest once these are fixed — happy to help debug (logs, device info, whatever is needed).
Bottom bar raising the keyboard: reproduced on an Android 15 emulator. After Back puts the keyboard away, the text field keeps the focus, and Chrome on Android raises the keyboard again on any tap while a field is focused, key-bar keys included. The fix is in #3297: a key-bar tap now leaves a keyboard that is down where it is (and one that is up stays up). Until it ships, Settings > Terminal > "Keyboard only from the key bar" avoids it.
Connection never succeeding: I could not reproduce this one yet, so a few details would help:
What runs on the computer: the Ovis desktop app, or the ovis server you started yourself? The phone app talks to Ovis on the computer; herdr alone (the terminal app) is not something the phone can connect to.
How you connect: the code or QR code from the computer on the same Wi-Fi, a Tailscale address, or the Ovis relay.
What the phone shows when it fails (the exact message or a screenshot), and the Ovis version on the computer (Settings > About).
If you can, the computer's Ovis log around a failed attempt.
Adding the diagnostic details upfront so this doesn't need a round-trip.
Environment (fill in / confirm)
Desktop OS: TODO (e.g. Ubuntu 24.04 / macOS 14 / Windows 11)
herdr version: TODO (herdr --version)
Ovis app version + install source: Google Play, TODO (Play → App info)
Android version / device: TODO (e.g. Android 15, Pixel 8)
Network path: TODO (same LAN as desktop / via VPN / via Cloudflare tunnel)
Desktop side listeners: TODO (output of herdr status or the port Ovis is told to connect to)
What I checked on the desktop side
herdr is running and reachable locally: TODO (local browser to the same URL returns the UI)
Port is reachable from another machine on the same LAN: TODO (nc -vz <host> <port>)
No firewall on the desktop blocking inbound: TODO
Exact reproduction
Install from Google Play, open the app.
Add the desktop connection with the same URL that works in a desktop browser.
The app reports a connection failure and never shows the pane list. Retried on Wi-Fi and on 5G, and after force-stop + relaunch — same result.
The IME issue (easier to reproduce)
On the main screen, tap any button in the bottom action bar — including the arrow / directional keys, which send no text. The soft keyboard opens every time, covering the pane content, and must be dismissed manually. Steps: open a pane → tap an arrow key in the bottom bar → IME appears without any text field being focused.
Logs I can provide
Android logcat while attempting to connect (adb logcat -s <app tag>, or a screen recording)

Thanks for the detailed report, @Shunamxiao.
