🟡 Minor · Configure sampling through OpenTelemetry.

src/Dan.Plugin.Enova/host.json:9-20
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Configure sampling through OpenTelemetry.

logging.OpenTelemetry.logLevel is a valid Azure Functions host setting, so keep that nesting. samplingSettings is not a supported child of logging.OpenTelemetry. With telemetryMode set to OpenTelemetry, the legacy logging.applicationInsights.samplingSettings section also does not apply. The current isEnabled value therefore has no effect, and telemetry volume can remain at the OpenTelemetry SDK defaults. Configure sampling with OTEL_TRACES_SAMPLER and related settings, or in the worker SDK, and remove the unsupported samplingSettings block.

Azure Functions host.json telemetryMode OpenTelemetry .NET isolated worker Application Insights classic SDK behavior

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In Azure Functions, setting "telemetryMode": "OpenTelemetry" in your host.json file changes how the Functions host process exports telemetry [1][2]. When "telemetryMode" is set to "OpenTelemetry", the host stops using the classic Application Insights SDK to export its telemetry and instead uses OpenTelemetry standards [3][4]. Consequently, the classic Application Insights configuration block within host.json (e.g., logging:applicationInsights:enableDependencyTracking) becomes inapplicable because that block specifically controls the classic SDK, which is no longer in use by the host [4]. For.NET isolated worker applications, the following behaviors and recommendations apply: 1. Application Insights SDK vs. OpenTelemetry: If you are migrating to OpenTelemetry, you should remove dependencies on the classic Application Insights SDK (e.g., Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WorkerService) where possible, as the new recommended approach is using the Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Distro (Azure.Monitor.OpenTelemetry.Exporter) [5][6]. 2. Configuration Responsibility: With "telemetryMode": "OpenTelemetry" enabled, the host process exports its telemetry based on OpenTelemetry standards [1][3]. However, the configuration of the worker process (where your actual function code runs) remains the responsibility of your application code [1][4]. You must configure OpenTelemetry in your Program.cs using the Microsoft.Azure.Functions.Worker.OpenTelemetry and Azure.Monitor.OpenTelemetry.Exporter packages [5][7]. 3. Telemetry Filtering: Because settings like enableDependencyTracking no longer apply to the host when using OpenTelemetry mode, you cannot suppress host-level telemetry using those classic host.json settings [4]. If you encounter "noisy" telemetry from the host, you may need to use Data Collection Rules (DCRs) in your Log Analytics workspace or apply OpenTelemetry processors within your application code to filter traces and logs [8]. 4. Compatibility Note: The classic Application Insights integration (when not using OpenTelemetry mode) relies on the v2 Application Insights SDK, which may conflict with newer.NET libraries or custom telemetry initializers/processors [6]. Migrating to OpenTelemetry is the current strategic direction for Azure Functions monitoring [6]. Top Results: [1][5][4]

<title>Use OpenTelemetry with Azure Functions | Microsoft Learn</title> https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/azure-functions/opentelemetry-howto This article shows you how to configure your function app to export log and trace data in an OpenTelemetry format. Azure Functions generates telemetry data on your function executions from both the Functions host process and the language-specific worker process in which your function code runs. By default, this telemetry data is sent to Application Insights by using the Application Insights SDK. However, you can choose to export this data by using OpenTelemetry semantics. While you can still use an OpenTelemetry format to send your data to Application Insights, you can now also export the same data to any other OpenTelemetry-compliant endpoint. ... - OpenTelemetry is enabled at the function app level, both in host configuration (`host.json`) and in your code project. Functions also provides a client optimized experience for exporting OpenTelemetry data from your function code that&`#39`;s running in a language-specific worker process. ... When you enable OpenTelemetry output in the function app&`#39`;s `host.json` file, your host exports OpenTelemetry output regardless of the language stack used by your app. ... To enable OpenTelemetry output from the Functions host, update the host.json file in your code project to add a `"telemetryMode": "OpenTelemetry"` element to the root collection. With OpenTelemetry enabled, your host.json file might look like this: ... ```json { "version": "2.0", "telemetryMode": "OpenTelemetry", ... } ... When you enable OpenTelemetry in the `host.json` file, the app&`#39`;s environment variables determine the endpoints for sending data based on which OpenTelemetry-supported application settings are available. ... In the Dan.Common library (part of the data-altinn-no/core repository), ConfigureDanPluginDefaults is a method used to configure services [1][2], which includes registering authentication credentials and telemetry settings [1][3]. ApplicationInsightWorker refers to the integration of Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WorkerService within these applications to enable telemetry [3][4]. Key technical context regarding these components: 1. ConfigureDanPluginDefaults: This method is defined in HostBuilderExtensions.cs [1]. Recent updates, such as in version 1.11.0, have been used to register DefaultAzureCredential to standardize authentication [1][5]. 2. Application Insights Integration: Projects in this ecosystem utilize Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WorkerService for telemetry [3]. There is specific maintenance involved in keeping these packages compatible; for example, developers have pinned Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WorkerService to version 2.23.0 to maintain compatibility with the Azure Functions isolated-worker runtime environment, which does not yet support the 3.x line of Application Insights packages [3]. 3. Dependency Management: Because multiple packages can bring in different versions of authentication or telemetry libraries, developers must be careful to avoid assembly collisions (such as CS0433 errors) by pinning dependencies like Azure.Identity to consistent versions across Dan.Common and Dan.Core [3].

Pin to Azure.Identity 1.21.0 (matching Dan.Core), which type-forwards the credential into Azure.Core instead of duplicating it. The Azure Functions isolated-worker integration (Microsoft.Azure.Functions.Worker.ApplicationInsights 2.51.0, latest) still targets the 2.x core via PerfCounterCollector 2.23.0 and has no 3.x-compatible release, so WorkerService 3.1.2 produced an unsupported mixed graph (core 3.1.2 + PerfCounterCollector 2.23.0) that builds but breaks AI telemetry/logging at Functions host startup. Pin back to 2.23.0 to keep the whole AI graph on 2.x. To integrate logs using the Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Exporter in.NET, you can use either the per-signal approach or the cross-cutting UseAzureMonitorExporter extension [1][2]. ### Per-Signal Approach To add the exporter specifically for logs, use the AddAzureMonitorLogExporter extension method within your AddOpenTelemetry configuration [3][1]. csharp var loggerFactory = LoggerFactory.Create(builder =&gt; { builder.AddOpenTelemetry(logging =&gt; { logging.AddAzureMonitorLogExporter(options =&gt; { options.ConnectionString = &quot;InstrumentationKey=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&quot;; }); }); }); To include log scopes, ensure you set IncludeScopes to true [1][4]: csharp var loggerFactory = LoggerFactory.Create(builder =&gt; { builder.AddOpenTelemetry(logging =&gt; { logging.AddAzureMonitorLogExporter(options =&gt; options.ConnectionString = &quot;...&quot;); logging.IncludeScopes = true; }); }); ### Cross-Cutting Approach (UseAzureMonitorExporter) If you are using OpenTelemetry.Extensions.Hosting, you can use the UseAzureMonitorExporter extension to simplify registration for all signals (traces, metrics, and logs) simultaneously [1][2]. This approach also enables Live Metrics by default [1][4]. csharp appBuilder.Services.AddOpenTelemetry() .UseAzureMonitorExporter(options =&gt; { options.ConnectionString = &quot;InstrumentationKey=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&quot;; }); Note: The cross-cutting UseAzureMonitorExporter extension requires OpenTelemetry.Extensions.Hosting and is used when adding OpenTelemetry to a ServiceCollection [1][2]. For detailed options, refer to the AzureMonitorExporterOptions class [5].

For example, specifying 0.4 means that 40% of traces are sampled and 60% are dropped. | | StorageDirectory | Override the default directory for offline storage. | | TracesPerSecond | Gets or sets the number of traces per second to be sampled when using rate-limited sampling. For example, specifying 0.5 means one request every two seconds. When both TracesPerSecond and SamplingRatio are specified, TracesPerSecond takes precedence. | | Transport | The HttpPipelineTransport to be used for this client. Use only one worker Application Insights pipeline.

When APPLICATIONINSIGHTS_CONNECTION_STRING is set, Program.cs enables the Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry exporter. Dan.Common 1.12.0 also registers the classic provider through ConfigureDanPluginDefaults(). telemetryMode: "OpenTelemetry" changes only Functions host telemetry. It does not disable worker providers. The same worker logs can therefore be exported twice, increasing ingestion volume and cost. Disable the classic provider before enabling this exporter, or gate the two pipelines so only one is active.

In `@src/Dan.Plugin.Enova/Program.cs` around lines 41 - 42, Update the worker
telemetry setup in Program.cs so ConfigureDanPluginDefaults() and the Azure
Monitor OpenTelemetry exporter do not run simultaneously when
APPLICATIONINSIGHTS_CONNECTION_STRING is configured. Disable the classic
Application Insights provider before enabling UseAzureMonitorExporter, or gate
the configurations so exactly one worker pipeline is active.
