Both integrations now rethrow non-authentication errors and refresh the token only after a recognized authentication error when the cached token is not fresh. New tests cover refresh and retry, direct error rethrow, and fresh-token behavior. Documentation covers cookie-JWT retries for queries, mutations, and actions. Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to JWT-cached calls now retry once only after recognized authentication failures on stale tokens. The implementation and tests cover fresh-token behavior, but the documentation should explicitly note that fresh-token authentication failures are not retried. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4✅ Passed checks (4 passed)

Document the fresh-token exception.
src/nextjs/index.ts and src/react-start/index.ts rethrow when token.isFresh is true, even when isAuthError(error) returns true. The current text says every cookie-JWT authentication failure is retried. State that the retry applies only when a cached, non-fresh token fails.

callWithToken was throwing when isAuthError returned true, so a rejected cached JWT never refreshed and non-auth failures did. Retry only when the cache is enabled, the token was cached, and the error is auth-related.

callWithToken rethrew when isAuthError(error) was true, so a cookie JWT rejected by Convex was never refreshed, while non-auth failures were retried, re-running mutations and actions. Flip the condition in the Next.js and TanStack Start helpers and document the retry. Ports convex#440. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Summary
The
catchincallWithTokenlooks inverted: it rethrows whenisAuthError(error)is true. So a stale cookie JWT that Convex rejects (Unauthorized,Not authenticated) is never refreshed, while a non-auth error like"validation failed"triggers a refetch and retry. Since mutations and actions go through the same path, that retry re-runs them. The other two clauses already say "only retry a cached, unvalidated token", and staleness shows up as an auth error, so this flips the third clause in the Next.js and TanStack Start helpers.
A bit of history in case it helps: before ed94aca the retry was
if (result.isFresh) throw error;followed by a refetch, i.e. any error on a cached token. ed94aca introducedisAuthErrorto narrow that, and I think the negation just got lost in the refactor. No test or doc line pinned the polarity. If the current behaviour is intended, happy to close this and keep only the tests and docs.Changes
nextjs/index.ts,react-start/index.ts: negate the clause, one-line comment.jwt-cache.test.tsin both: stale + auth error retries once withforceRefreshand the new token; non-auth error rethrows; fresh token rethrows.experimental.mdx: short paragraph on when the retry happens and whyisAuthErrorshould stay narrow.Test plan
