Closes #108.

Acceptance evidence is now read against the contract a person approved, and only from the reporter configured for each criterion's kind. Before this, the criteria came from the head, and any App's result counted. The rulings, with the Maintainer's three decisions, are on #108.

What changes

  • The approved contract:

    • facts.acceptance becomes {approved, head, results}.
    • The criteria and their kinds come from the contract a person approved, at approved.commit.
    • A sha256: digest of 64 hex characters covers the contract and the tests it names.
    • approved.commit must be held by the approver's own review on that commit: a person with write, in state approved, not dismissed by a person.
  • Two new Holds, both needs_you:

    • contract_not_approved: no approval, an approval that isn't a person's, or one with no matching review.
    • contract_changed: the head's digest differs from the approved one, including deletion and a change to a test the contract names.

Both are read after foreign_checks and before mergeable. A queued item leaves the queue under either.

  • acceptance: null now means the linked issue asks for no contract, read in full. Reading the issue waits on adapters/; the Maintainer accepted an issues: read grant for the Controller.

  • Reporters:

    • A new acceptance_reporters setting maps each criterion kind to a required deterministic Lens. Only test → verify is filled. human never has a reporter.
    • A result from another App, workflow file or check name is acceptance_unreadable (from_another_app, from_workflow, from_another_check), reusing Kernel: a Lens is read only from the App that reports it #60's pin.
    • A missing or misshapen setting defers as acceptance_reporters_unreadable.
  • A human criterion passes only on an approving review of this content by a person with write. One such review covers every human criterion (the Maintainer's call). A dismissal ends it only when a person dismissed it. That departs from the ruling's word "undismissed" to follow Kernel: what a person placed, only a person ends #61: "what a person placed, only a person ends". 0025's Why records it.

  • Readability: a review missing its commit, content id or a dismissal field is review_unreadable, so nothing crashes on a short read.

  • Lifecycle: verifying → converged by a person, when the person confirms a human criterion. It is bounded, because no cycle can depend on it without a person.

  • Simulator:

    • A push can edit or delete the contract, and settling puts a deleted one back.
    • A person approves or withdraws it.
    • Other Apps, workflows and checks give results.
    • The simulator asserts that only a person passes a human criterion.
  • Records:

    • Decision 0025: acceptance, new.
    • Decision 0026: replaces 0022 and restates it, with two rows corrected: the contract is read at the approval's commit, and whether one exists comes from the linked issue. Two of 0022's waiting rows now name their tests.
    • Design: trial P-38.

Verified on a plain git archive export with PATH=/usr/bin:/bin, at 4a58fc3, rebased onto #149:

  • make verify passes (527 tests).
  • python3 -m tools.mutants kills 446 of 446. Four check_decisions mutants timed out on the loaded Mac and were killed on a rerun two at a time. CI's shards are the final word.
  • Each new mutant fails its own test, and check_decisions is clean.

Reviewed by: a fresh-context Claude review and a security pass. All five findings are fixed:

  • 0022 made false, so it is replaced;
  • a crash on a review missing a field;
  • a crash on a missing reporter setting;
  • the contract's approval taken on the port's word;
  • a digest of any length.

AGY (Gemini 4 Argon) on 87bfc2f: approve, no findings. Muse was unavailable (quota) until 2026-10-19.

CodeRabbit: four points were answered by Auto-fix in 16f0926:

  • decision 0025's Status no longer recounts history;
  • the design names the newest person's approval as the baseline;
  • the simulator keeps a contract's criteria across re-approval;
  • the port's choice of approval is clarified.

The fifth point, a mutant that was killed by a crash, now produces a wrong decision and is killed by its own test's assertion (4a58fc3).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Acceptance criteria are tied to a human-approved contract that must match the pull request’s current content. Missing approval or contract changes hold the item for review and prevent work from starting.
    • Check-based criteria require results from the configured reporter and its matching App and workflow. Human criteria require approval of the current content.
    • Reporter settings specify which checks can report each criterion type; unset reporters make those results unreadable.
    • People can move an item from verifying to converged without a time limit.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on acceptance contracts and check identity, and expanded platform trials to cover how dismissed reviews are recorded.

📝 Walkthrough

Acceptance facts now distinguish the person-approved contract from the contract at the pull-request head. The kernel validates approval and digest matching, then evaluates results from configured reporters or person reviews for human criteria. The simulator, lifecycle, schemas, fixtures, tests, and decision records reflect these rules.

Changes: Acceptance contract and reporter enforcement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Acceptance contracts and reporter data
schemas/*.json, config/*, examples/*.json
Acceptance facts now include approved-contract metadata, a head digest, typed criteria, and check identity for each result. Configuration maps check-based criterion kinds to reporters.
Kernel contract and reporter evaluation
kernel/terms.py, kernel/derive.py, kernel/decide.py
The kernel validates contract and review fields, approval, digests, criteria, and reporter configuration. It holds items when approval is absent or the head digest differs, and defers evaluation for unreadable contract or reporter data.
Simulator and lifecycle behavior
sim/*, lifecycle/pull_request.json
The simulator models approval, withdrawal, contract edits or deletion, reporter-attributed evidence, human criteria, and settlement. The lifecycle permits a human transition from verifying to converged without a bound.
Acceptance tests and mutation coverage
tests/*, tools/mutants.py
Tests and mutation cases cover approval identity, digest matching, reporter identity, human criteria, unreadable inputs, lifecycle transitions, and evaluation ordering.
Decision and architecture records
docs/architecture/*, docs/decisions/*
The records describe contract approval, reporter rules, Lens behavior, evidence ordering, and platform trial P-38.

Explanation

The configuration, schemas, kernel derivation, lifecycle, simulator, documentation, fixtures, tests, and mutant catalog all support Issue #108. They implement approved-contract checks, reporter identity, human criteria, linked-issue contract semantics, and the required Holds. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #108 is implemented for approved-contract identity, reporter attribution, human criteria, Holds, queue removal, tests, and decision boundaries. One coding requirement remains unmet. kernel.derive.readable_reporters() accepts a mapping that omits required non-human criterion kinds because it checks only value types. Such a mapping is not deferred as acceptance_reporters_unreadable; reporter() treats the omitted kind as having no reporter. The schema requires the five keys, but the kernel boundary is not enforced by this function. No boundary test or mutant for an omitted required key is shown.

Resolution

Make readable_reporters() require every non-human criterion kind (test, scenario, mutation, static, and role) and reject extra or invalid keys as required by the configuration contract. Add a boundary test and mutant for an omitted required key. Ensure the result defers with acceptance_reporters_unreadable.

Adversarial Review (AGY - Gemini 3.8 Flash High)

Evaluated against config/rubric-pr-review.json:

Rubric Evaluation

  • PR-1 (Requirements & Scope): PASS
    • Fully implements Issue #108:
      • Contract validation & gating: contract_not_approved and contract_changed Holds are evaluated prior to admitting any Run (I-29).
      • acceptance: null safely represents an issue requiring no contract.
      • Deterministic reporter configuration (acceptance_reporters) maps criterion kinds (test -> verify; scenario, mutation, static, role defaulting to null). Foreign check results defer as acceptance_unreadable (from_app, from_workflow, from_another_check, no_reporter).
      • Human criteria evaluation: confirmed only via an undismissed approving review on current content by a person with write permissions (confirmed_by_a_person); check results for human criteria are unreadable; human criteria never fail.
      • Contract approval verification: approval_stands ensures an approving GitHub review on the exact approval commit by that person exists and is not dismissed by a person; digests strictly validated against DIGEST_SHAPE (64-character lowercase SHA-256).
      • Malformed reviews or unreadable acceptance_reporters defer safely for Maintainer triage.
  • PR-2 (Security & Execution Safety): PASS
    • No writes outside permitted effects.
    • Fail-closed semantics strictly preserved across all validation paths; unreadable contracts or configuration defer to Maintainer without admitting Runs or actions.
    • Impostor check results from other Apps, unverified workflow paths, or mismatched check names are strictly quarantined.
  • PR-3 (Regression & Functional Tests): PASS
    • Exhaustive test suite added across tests/test_decide.py, tests/test_transitions.py, and tests/test_simulator.py.
    • 42 new mutant invariants defined in tools/mutants.py with individual test verifications.
  • PR-4 (Kernel Purity): PASS
    • All modifications in kernel/decide.py, kernel/derive.py, and kernel/terms.py are strictly functional and deterministic with zero I/O and zero clock reads.
  • PR-5 (Documentation & Invariants): PASS

Restore gapless decision numbering before merge.

tools/check_context.py requires decision records to be numbered from 0001 with no gaps. The current tree contains 0023, 0025, and 0026, so the context check reports numbering errors. make verify runs this check through tools.verify, and the CI checks job runs make verify.

If Decision 0024 is landing in a coordinated change, rebase this branch after it lands and retain 0025 and 0026. Otherwise, renumber the records before merge. The repository contains no applicable exception or verified merge-order arrangement, so the current head remains a required-check blocker.

…oved contract

Issue 108, built on the working rulings and the Maintainer's three
decisions of 2026-10-17 (decision 0025).

- The facts' `acceptance` is {approved, head, results}: the contract a
person approved (digest, who, criteria by id and kind), its digest at
the head, and each result with the check that reported it. Null means
the linked issue asks for none.
- contract_reading, after foreign_checks and before mergeable: an
unreadable contract defers; no person's approval is the Hold
contract_not_approved; a head that differs, or none, is the Hold
contract_changed. Both join NEEDS_YOU_REASONS and dequeue. A result on
this content is then read with reports_for against the Lens that
config `acceptance_reporters` names for its kind (test -> verify, the
rest null): anything else is acceptance_unreadable, with evidence
  AC-n:from_app:<id>, :from_workflow:<path>, :from_another_check or
  :no_reporter.
- A human criterion passes only on a person's approving review of this
content that no person dismissed; a check's result for it is
  unreadable.
- The #17 tests move to the new shape; seven boundary tests and 28
mutants are added, nine #17 mutants follow the moved code.
- Lifecycle: verifying -> converged by a person, who confirms a human
criterion. The exploration and the simulator edit, delete, approve
and withdraw the contract, and give foreign results.
- Decision 0022's two rows for issue 108 name their tests; design §3.3,
  §3.13 and trial P-38.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- A contract approved with no criteria, and no results, must not converge:
the case had results that hid the empty list.
- The queue-causes simulation counts only a Lens check's foreign forms,
  not a result's AC-n:from_workflow, which had masked the impostor-workflow
  mutant.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… reads is read whole

The fix round on issue 108, from the review and security pass.

- approved.commit: the approval of the contract stands only on a review in
reviews by that person, with write access, approving, on that commit,
and not dismissed by a person; otherwise contract_not_approved.
- A digest is sha256: and exactly 64 lower-case hex digits (DIGEST_SHAPE),
in the schema and the Kernel.
- unreadable_reviews reads every field the Kernel uses: commit, content_id
and both dismissal fields must be there, so a person's comment missing
one defers as review_unreadable instead of raising.
- A missing or misshapen acceptance_reporters defers an item with a
contract as acceptance_reporters_unreadable, for the Maintainer.
- Decision 0026 replaces 0022, restating it with the two acceptance rows
amended; 0022 is marked replaced. 0025 records the above.

Four boundary tests, fourteen mutants; four acceptance mutants follow the
moved code.

With approval_stands holding the approval to a review, the mutant that
reads a null approval as one survived its own test, which had no person's
review in it. The Hold test now gives a person's approving review of the
content, and of the contract's commit, with no approval named.

Comment thread tools/mutants.py Outdated
…g Decision

The mutant "nobody's approval is read as an approval" passed None on to
approval_stands, so its test failed by a TypeError, not an assertion. It
now has a missing approval converge, and the Hold test fails by assertion.

Adversarial Review (AGY - Gemini 3.8 Flash High)

Evaluated against config/rubric-pr-review.json for commit 4a58fc3:

Rubric Evaluation

  • PR-1 (Requirements & Scope): PASS
    • Refines mutant testing for Issue #108:
      • Refines mutant "nobody's approval is read as an approval" in tools/mutants.py to return a false CONVERGED state rather than falling through to an unhandled None dereference crash.
      • Adds test coverage in tests/test_decide.py confirming that an approving review present on the PR does not satisfy contract approval when the facts record no contract approval (by=None), properly holding with contract_not_approved.
  • PR-2 (Security & Execution Safety): PASS
    • Test-only and mutant-only modifications; zero writes outside permitted effects.
  • PR-3 (Regression & Functional Tests): PASS
    • Tests in tests/test_decide.py explicitly catch and kill the refined mutant.
  • PR-4 (Kernel Purity): PASS
    • Zero modifications to kernel/.
  • PR-5 (Documentation & Invariants): PASS
    • Decision 0025 / 0026 documentation and boundary mappings preserved.

Findings

  • Critical: 0
  • High: 0
  • Medium: 0

Verdict: PASS
