Code Review
This pull request refactors the PR comment fetching logic in bot-comment-retry.sh to write paginated GraphQL responses to a temporary file and merge them using jq from the file, preventing failures due to command argument limits (ARG_MAX) on PRs with extensive comment histories. It also improves error handling and logging, and updates the BATS unit tests accordingly. The review feedback suggests removing redundant local variable declarations in _bcr_fetch_pr_comments_into and asserting specific non-zero exit codes in the BATS tests instead of using generic non-zero checks to avoid false positives.

Automated review — escalated to humanThe automated review cascade escalated this PR to a human reviewer at review cycle 3/3 (risk: MEDIUM, reviewed commit Why: the cascade could neither approve the PR nor auto-request fixes, so it requested human review via CODEOWNERS and set the Reviewer summary: Both reviewers rate risk MEDIUM and agree the core fix is correct (pages go to a temp file, are merged with jq -s, and comments reach bcr_retry_decisions over stdin), with CI green. They differ on the decision: the deep reviewer escalates because review cycle 3/3 has been reached and 8 bot threads are unresolved, with the claimed fixes missing from the head (not-on-ref). returned `endCursor` with the cursor used for the request whenever `hasNextPage`
is true; if they match, stop pagination and return a pagination warning. Add a

- Around line 216-218: Run the fetch and status capture in an isolated subshell
with an EXIT trap that removes pages_file, so cleanup also occurs on
interruption without changing the caller’s traps; keep the existing return-code

Auto-dismissed (#617): coderabbitai[bot] CHANGES_REQUESTED on a superseded commit. The bot re-reviews the new head automatically — a valid concern will return as a fresh review.
… up the temp file (#2072) - _bcr_fetch_pr_comments_into fails closed when hasNextPage is true but endCursor repeats the previous cursor, instead of re-fetching forever. - bcr_fetch_pr_comments runs the fetch in a subshell with an EXIT trap so the temp file holding comment bodies is removed even on interruption, and errexit can no longer skip the status capture. - Drop the duplicate local declaration; fail-closed tests assert status 1. Summary
Fixes #2072. bcr_fetch_pr_comments used to merge GraphQL pages with jq --argjson, which hit the exec argument limit on PRs with many comments. Each page's nodes array is now appended to a mktemp file and merged once with jq -cs 'add // []' file. The merged JSON reaches bcr_retry_decisions only through a shell variable and printf | jq (builtins plus stdin), so no exec argument carries comment bodies anywhere in this path. Head commit 480b103 also fixes every finding from the cycle-3 review of 42f2e0f. Risk is MEDIUM because this is a non-trivial change to shell logic in dev-lead automation. It does not touch secrets, auth, workflows, or migrations.
Linked issue analysis
Closes #2072. All three acceptance criteria are met:
- Large PRs: a new bats case serves 30 pages × 100 comments with about 2 KB of body text each. Its output is checked to be larger than
getconf ARG_MAX, then fed through bcr_retry_decisions with no error. - Fail closed, with distinct warnings: each failure prints its own
[warn]line on stderr — API request failed, unparseable response, GraphQL errors, invalid pagination (missing, non-boolean, or non-advancing cursor), and page-merge failure. Each case has a test that asserts exit status 1, empty stdout, and the matching stderr reason. - Synthetic large set: covered by the bats test above.
Findings
Prior cycle-3 findings (on 42f2e0f) — all fixed:
- MAJOR, repeated endCursor loops forever: fixed. The loop now fails closed when
hasNextPage=trueand endCursor equals the previous cursor, and a bats case covers it. It only catches immediate repeats, not longer cursor cycles, but that is sufficient for GraphQL connection cursors. - MINOR, temp-file cleanup under errexit: fixed. The fetch runs in a subshell with its own EXIT trap, the caller uses
|| rc=$?and then an unconditionalrm -f, and a test asserts that TMPDIR is left empty on both success and failure. - MINOR, duplicate
local: fixed. - MINOR,
-ne 0assertions: fixed. Tests now assert-eq 1and require bats 1.5.0 or later for--separate-stderr. - MINOR, unresolved threads: all review threads are now resolved.
- INFO, sibling ARG_MAX risk:
fetch_pr_comment_nodesin dev-lead-retry.sh still merges with--argjson. This is out of scope and should get a follow-up issue. It does not block this PR.
New issues: none blocking.
- Nit: the new stderr warnings also reach dev-lead-intent.sh, which does not redirect stderr from bcr_fetch_pr_comments. They are diagnostic lines in the step log only, which is harmless and arguably useful.
- Local check:
shellcheck --severity=warningpasses on the library at the head commit. bats is not installed on this runner, so the suite was verified through CI. - Secret scan: the MCP secret-scanning tool is not available in this run. The gitleaks CI check passed.
CI status
Every check at 480b103 is green, including bats, unit, ShellCheck, Lint, CodeQL, SonarCloud (quality gate passed), Secret scan (gitleaks), AgentShield, and the standards and stub validators. The CANCELLED entries are superseded dev-lead, review, and dispatch runs from earlier pushes, not failures. The dev-lead / dispatch run in progress is automation, not a gate.

Problem
bot-comment retry scan fails with "jq: Argument list too long" on PRs with many comments — undispositioned bot comments are never retried
From the issue: The bot-comment retry scan added in #2022 fails closed on PRs with many comments:
jqis invoked with the whole comment list as a command-line argument and exits withArgument list too long, so the scan skips the PR and never retries its undispositioned bot comments.Risk
Low — changes automation shell logic under scripts/, covered by shellcheck (--severity=warning) and the bats suite.
Test plan
Tests added/updated:
tests/dev-lead/unit/test_bot_comment_retry.bats. Verification:bash scripts/dev-lead-lint.sh(shellcheck --severity=warning) ran pre-commit; the bats suite runs in CI.Rollback
Revert this PR. No non-revertible side effects (no tags, migrations, or external state).
Monitoring
This PR's Lint (shellcheck) and bats checks show pass/fail; watch subsequent dev-lead / pr-review runs for behavioral regressions.
