fix(init): treat .ts/.tsx sources as TypeScript without a tsconfig.json - #590
clerk init decided TypeScript only from tsconfig.json, which Next.js writes on the first next dev or next build. A new project with app/layout.tsx and no tsconfig yet got SKIP app/layout.jsx — Layout file not found, proxy.js and .jsx auth pages.
Init now also treats the project as TypeScript when any non-.d.ts.ts/.tsx file is under app/, pages/ or src/.
Testing
New context.test.ts cases: .tsx sources without a tsconfig, and .d.ts files alone don't count.
bun run format:check, lint, typecheck, test pass.
Coding-agent eval (Codex, empty directory, clerk init --accountless): before, init skipped the layout and the agent renamed the generated files; with this change, init modified app/layout.tsx and wrote proxy.ts and .tsx pages.
Next.js writes tsconfig.json on the first next dev or next build, so a new
project with app/layout.tsx was treated as JavaScript: init skipped the
layout and wrote .js/.jsx files.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
gatherContext now identifies TypeScript projects when tsconfig.json exists or when .ts or .tsx source files are found under app, pages, or src. Detection excludes declaration files and paths containing node_modules. Tests cover .tsx detection without a tsconfig.json and .d.ts exclusion. A patch changeset describes the init behavior.
Mixed-language projects without tsconfig.json can lose layout integration, leave existing middleware uncomposed, or have an existing sign-in page displaced. Fix cross-extension discovery and update the command documentation before merging.

Explanation
The title names the change: clerk init now treats .ts/.tsx sources as TypeScript when no tsconfig.json exists. The context.ts change adds source-file detection under app, pages, or src, and the tests cover that case. The title is specific and accurate, and it uses the conventional fix(init) prefix.

- Line 48: Update detectMiddlewareBasename to check both TypeScript and
JavaScript proxy and middleware files, not just the extension selected by
scriptExt; when composing the scaffold, reuse the detected file’s existing
extension so it does not create a duplicate entry in the other extension.

Document source-based TypeScript detection.
Update packages/cli-core/src/commands/init/README.md to describe the directories and declaration-file exclusion used by this detection. The command README currently does not describe the new behavior. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check existing Pages Router auth routes across extensions.
With pages/_app.tsx, an existing pages/sign-in/[[...sign-in]].jsx, and no tsconfig.json, this selects TypeScript. scaffoldAuthPages in frameworks/nextjs-pages.ts checks only the generated .tsx path, so it creates a second file for the same route. Next.js can select the generated page instead of the existing sign-in page. Check all supported extensions before creating the route. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Search both extensions when locating an existing Next.js layout.
When app/page.tsx exists without tsconfig.json, gatherContext sets typescript to true. detectLayoutPath then searches only .tsx and .ts files, so it misses an existing app/layout.jsx. nextjs-app.ts receives layoutPath: null and skips the layout edit. Init therefore does not add ClerkProvider.
Search both JavaScript and TypeScript extensions for existing layouts. Keep typescript for selecting extensions of new files.

Preserve existing middleware across extensions.
scriptExt returns ts when app/layout.tsx enables TypeScript. detectMiddlewareBasename checks only files with that extension. With an existing middleware.js, the scaffold ignores the JavaScript file and creates a new TypeScript entry. For Next.js 15 and earlier, this is middleware.ts; for Next.js 16 and later, it is proxy.ts.
Check both extensions during detection, then use the existing file's extension before composing it.
