feat(doctor): check iOS and macOS Release builds against production - #548
Conversation
`clerk init` sets up native Apple apps against the development instance only, so nothing checked that a Release build is ready for production. `clerk doctor` now checks each inspected non-Debug configuration against the production instance: - the Release Bundle ID's production iOS registration and Native API - `webcredentials:<production host>` in the entitlements Release signs with - the publishable key Release passes to Clerk.configure, when it is a Swift literal, an Info.plist entry (literal or build setting), or the one key literal compiled into that configuration; otherwise it reports the key as not verified. Keys are compared, never printed. A missing production instance stays a single passing note. Run in an Xcode project, `clerk deploy` and `clerk deploy status` point to `clerk doctor` for the Xcode side. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…arget, expand entitlement settings - `env["KEY"] ?? "pk_live_…"` (or an Info.plist read with a key fallback) resolved to the fallback and passed. The key check now follows only the argument itself: a literal, an Info.plist read (empty-string fallback at most), or a constant declared once as one of those. Anything else is "Not verified". - The scan walked every Swift file under SRCROOT, so another app target's Clerk.configure counted against the selected one. It now reads the target's own sources from the project (compile-sources files and synchronized folders less membership exceptions in a .pbxproj, target-membership entries in a .xcproj) and drops files the configuration excludes with EXCLUDED_SOURCE_FILE_NAMES. - The Associated Domain comparison read raw entitlement strings, so webcredentials:$(CLERK_FAPI_HOST) warned even when Release resolves it to the production host. Build settings are now expanded as Xcode does when signing. The real-Xcode probe covers all three, including an Xcode 27 JSON project. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…Info.plist entry Doctor now verifies the key only when Clerk.configure is passed a string literal or an Info.plist read, whose entry can be a $(BUILD_SETTING) set per configuration. A constant, a call inside #if, a fallback, the environment, or a bundled file reports "Not verified" with the reason instead of being followed through the source. This drops the #if evaluator and constant tracing, which were the parts that kept growing, while the suggested per-configuration setup stays verifiable. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Doctor no longer reads Swift. It checks the suggested setup's ClerkPublishableKey Info.plist entry, a literal or a $(BUILD_SETTING) that Xcode resolves per configuration, and reports any other way of loading the key as not verified. That removes the Swift lexer and the target source resolution. The gap it accepts: doctor doesn't confirm that Clerk.configure reads the entry it checked. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…the setup advice Bring back the narrow key check: a string literal passed to Clerk.configure, which is what clerk init writes, or an Info.plist read. Anything else stays "Not verified". Apps set up by clerk init now get a real answer, such as Release using the development key, instead of "Not verified". The remedy now states only the outcome (build Release with the production key from the dashboard). Doctor no longer recommends one way to switch keys between configurations. The design looks right to me. Every production finding is a warn, and anything doctor can't read without building is reported as "Not verified" instead of guessed. I left one blocking comment and three smaller ones inline.
The blocking one is in production.ts:51-62. If the target has no configuration named "Release", plain clerk doctor reports the production check as passing when it checked nothing.
The other three are worth fixing in this PR. Two warnings fall back to the "Run clerk init" remedy, which can't fix anything on the production side. Files shared into the target from another target's synchronized folder are never scanned.

… production warnings their own remedies - Without --xcode-configuration, doctor inspects only Debug and Release. A target whose release configuration has another name (Production, AppStore) passed with nothing checked; it now warns and names the configuration to pass. An explicitly selected Debug, or a Debug-only target, still passes. - An unreadable production key and a failed production check now carry their own remedies instead of falling back to "Run clerk init". - A file shared into the target from another target's synchronized folder reports the key as not verified instead of going unscanned. All four review comments are fixed, and each fix has a test.
- With only Debug inspected, doctor now warns and names the configuration to pass.
- The production warnings have remedies of their own instead of "Run clerk init".
- Files shared in from another target's synchronized folder now make the key "Not verified".
I ran the new production and publishable-key tests locally, and all 50 pass. Current main trial-merges with no conflicts and typechecks cleanly.
