feat(console): watch running device screens side by side - #1256
Adds Screens under Observe to watch ready and leased devices across workers. Tiles identify the worker, device, platform and runtime, and link to the existing device Screen drawer with distinct accessible names.
The grid reuses the shared workers query, session and stream/decoder primitives. Up to four visible tiles capture simultaneously; additional devices remain listed with a waiting notice. A waiting tile starts when an owner finishes cleanup. Captures do not rotate automatically. Hidden/offscreen tiles pause; removal, navigation and sign-out close their captures. Tile failures stay isolated, and new devices appear through existing event/poll/visibility refreshes.
The page-owned budget retains a slot until reader cancellation completes, including after a failure is already displayed. Admission mounts the canvas before starting capture; late headers and JPEGs after abort cannot restore a picture. The existing Fleet Screen caller needs no budget argument.
Validation
495 UI unit tests and eight synthetic Chromium browser tests passed, with at most two workers.
Genuine loopback HTTP/1.1 coverage uses six initial devices across two workers with duplicate labels/device IDs. Polling, event-driven device addition and ordinary reads progress while four captures run. Removal/failure promotion, first-frame painting, hidden/navigation/logout/auth cleanup and distinct identities are covered.
Negative controls demonstrate HTTP/1 read starvation without the budget, a fifth owned reader when cancellation is not awaited, and late-header/JPEG publication without abort fences. A held-cancellation matrix covers promotion and cancellation of waiters on hide, navigation, sign-out and unavailable streaming.
Source/UI/e2e types, lint, dependency boundaries, formatting, documentation checks and normal commit/push hooks passed. UI/website builds and OpenAPI check passed. Fallow reports two test-fixture complexity warnings under its existing test-file exemptions, with no dead code or duplication.
Independent review of the budget increment found one fixture failure-path cleanup issue and no confirmed production budget defect. The fixture now closes its server and sockets even if evidence recording or page closure rejects; three injected rejection cases verify cleanup and propagation of the original error. Four direct model cases cover already-aborted requests, canceled waiters, FIFO and idempotent release. Final acceptance of these fixes remains pending. Hosted CI, other-browser lanes, real devices, native builds and live deployment are not claimed.
Limits
The budget belongs to one Screens page and applies on both HTTP/1 and HTTP/2. It leaves room beside the event stream for reads in Chromium's usual HTTP/1 pool, but does not coordinate other tabs or unrelated same-origin traffic. Browser cancellation completion does not acknowledge server-side request closure, so transient transport overlap may still queue reads. Synthetic fixtures do not establish real-device encoding capacity or a universal spare-connection guarantee.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Adds a Screens route with tiles for eligible devices across workers. Tile captures depend on connection and visibility state, with a four-capture limit. The page links to each device screen and shares screen rendering with the Fleet panel. Capture state now waits for cancellation cleanup before releasing a slot and ignores late updates after abort. Model, browser, and stream tests cover tile data, layout, capture lifecycle, page states, and device discovery. Documentation describes the page and capture behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · up to c34a9
The Screens page behaves as described, and the earlier visibility and padding concerns are fixed. Two small maintainability follow-ups remain: the "four screens" text should follow the capture-limit constant, and the capture-budget logic could move to the model layer with unit tests. Neither blocks merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to c34a9
The page opens multiple device streams automatically, making capture ownership and cleanup important. Access remains within existing operator permissions, with visibility gating and four capture slots per page. That limit does not coordinate other tabs or guarantee immediate server-side closure after cancellation.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new presentation can capture ready and leased devices across workers already exposed to the operator. It increases simultaneous viewing convenience, not the operator's device authority. Four slots bound one page's owned captures, not total captures across tabs, operators, or servers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The route remains inside the authenticated console shell. Independently of UI gating, worker and gateway stream handlers reject non-operator device-stream callers. The gateway validates the worker, and the worker validates its own identity, device existence, and running state before opening capture. These enforcement declarations are unchanged from the PR base.
observed — Stream requests reuse the existing token and refusal-handling path. Authentication refusal can replace the live console with sign-in state, removing capture owners; the HTTP/1 fixture includes assertions for this cleanup.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The page budget provides local resource containment, not acknowledged server-side revocation. Documentation explicitly notes that other tabs are uncoordinated and browser cancellation completion can precede server request closure, allowing transient transport overlap and queued reads.

Use the latest IntersectionObserver entry, not some.
The observer watches one element. The browser can deliver several queued entries for that element in one callback, in chronological order. For example, a fast scroll can queue [intersecting, not intersecting]. entries.some(...) then returns true for a tile that is already out of view. The tile keeps its capture open while offscreen.
That wastes a stream slot. Connection slots are scarce here (see the comment on ui/src/screens/screens/index.tsx). Read only the newest entry.

Move the Screens description out of "Known gaps" and record the real gap.
Lines 170-171 sit under ## Known gaps. The paragraph describes how the Screens page works. It is not a gap, so a reader of that section will misread it.
The real gap is missing. The PR reports that on HTTP/1, five simultaneous captures plus the event stream exhaust Chromium's per-origin connection pool. Record that as a bullet here.
Put the Screens description next to the page table in ## Pages, or in ## Reads.
Proposed fix
- **The Events chart counts from the events held.** It reaches back one hour only; the Overview's
figures come from `GET /v1/stats` for the range in `?range=`.
--The Screens page reads the shared workers query through `state/screens.ts` and derives stable worker/device tiles in `model/screens.ts`. `useScreenVisibility` gates each tile with document visibility and an IntersectionObserver. Each active tile mounts the existing `useDeviceScreen` hook; `screens/screen-view.tsx` presents the same stream in the grid and Fleet drawer. Disconnected workers or daemon connections show no retained picture.+- **Screens can exhaust the browser's connections on HTTP/1.** Five simultaneous captures plus the+ event stream use the per-origin connection pool, and later reads wait until a capture closes.
Then add the removed paragraph under ## Pages, after the sidebar-group sentence.

Give each "Open device Screen" link a unique accessible name.
Every tile link has the same name, Open device Screen. Screen reader users who navigate by links hear identical entries that do not show which device each link opens. The <article>aria-label does not change the link name.
Add the worker, device label, and device ID to the link's accessible name. Keep the visible text at the start of the label.

Update the Link using tile.to to give each link a unique accessible name that
includes the worker, device label, and device ID. Keep “Open device Screen” as
the beginning of the accessible name and preserve it as the visible link text.
Tile decides which notice to show from connected, tile.offer and active. It also owns the notice wording. The repository rule says "A screen never fetches, never reads a route, never decides what a state means." The decision belongs in model/screens.ts or state/screens.ts.
Add a pure function, for example tileNotice(tile, connected, active): string | undefined, to model/screens.ts. It returns the notice text, or undefined when a picture is shown. Tile then renders ScreenNotice or Picture from that value. This also lets a plain unit test cover the wording, which the repository rules prefer.
As per coding guidelines: "A screen never fetches, never reads a route, never decides what a state means. It gets a view model from a state/ hook (useOverview) and draws it with ds/ components."

Use 24px padding inside the tile card.
.screens-tile is a card: --surface fill with a --border edge. .screens-tile-head pads it with --space-4 (16px). The design guide sets 24px inside a card. Use --space-6. At the 220px minimum tile width, this leaves 172px for the text, which still wraps because of overflow-wrap: anywhere.
As per coding guidelines (docs/internal/DESIGN.md, Spacing): "Cards sit 16px apart. Inside a card, 24px from its sides."

Move createCaptureBudget to model/ and unit-test it.
createCaptureBudget has no React and no network. It holds the capture-limit rule and has concurrency edge cases:
Abort while waiting.
An aborted signal at call time.
Idempotent release.
FIFO admission when a slot frees.
It is private to state/screens.ts, so no unit test can reach it. The browser lane is the only coverage.
The path instructions place pure rules in model/ and test them directly in Node. Export the function from ui/src/model/screens.ts (or a sibling file). Take the limit as a parameter or import the constant. Add unit tests for the cases above. state/screens.ts then keeps only useState(createCaptureBudget).
As per coding guidelines: "model/ has no React and no network, so every rule is a plain unit test."

Summary
Validation
