On Windows, child.kill ends only the child, so the driver's SIGKILL of emulator.exe (boot timeout, slow shutdown) left qemu-system-x86_64-headless.exe running with ~4 GB and its console port. The emulator spawn now passes a new ProcessRunOptions.killTree, so killing its handle runs taskkill /PID <pid> /T /F, falling back to the child alone. Nothing else opts in: an adb client can start the adb server as its child, and for phones that is the shared 5037 server, which is never started, stopped or adopted on purpose. Other children die alone, as on main; .bat/.cmd keep their tree kill. macOS/Linux unchanged.

Reproduced 2026-10-31: emulator.exe 46636 → qemu 9488; after BootTimeoutError 46636 was gone, 9488 running.

Tests: Windows-only windows-command.test.ts shows killTree takes a detached grandchild and a plain kill leaves it running. A driver test shows the emulator spawn sets killTree and no adb call does; it runs on Linux CI only. Every android/index.test.ts test fails on Windows already (POSIX fixtures): 308 before, 309 after, the new one.

Follow-ups:

  • After a restart (no handle), a failed 5 s emu avd path gate makes #shutdown send nothing while shutdown commits; needs a spec.
  • taskkill /T cannot reach qemu once emulator.exe is gone.

Review

Spec review: skipped. Code review: 0 blocking, 0 fixed, 0 notes. Claims review: 0 blocking, 0 fixed, 0 notes.
Rounds: 1. Tokens: 1.6M.
Slow lane: not run. The change is win32-only (killTree changes nothing elsewhere), and the slow Android lane cannot run on this Windows host; the Windows-only windows-command.test.ts covers the tree kill (18 of 18 here).
After review: 6490ada moves the tree-kill choice out of spawn into killsTree for Fallow's CRAP gate; no behaviour change (process-runner and windows-command tests 58 of 58).
Assessment: complete

On Windows a ProcessHandle kill ended the child alone unless it was a
batch file's cmd.exe wrapper, so the Android driver's SIGKILL of
emulator.exe (a readiness timeout, a shutdown that outlives its wait)
left qemu-system-x86_64-headless.exe running with ~4 GB and its console
port. Every Windows child is now killed with `taskkill /PID <pid> /T /F`,
as every POSIX child already is through its process group, and the
handle reports the kill rather than taskkill's exit code. macOS and
Linux are unchanged.

callstackincubator#1129's tree kill reached every child, adb clients included, and an adb
client can start the shared 5037 server as its child. The runner again
kills an ordinary child alone on Windows (a .bat/.cmd still as a tree);
a new ProcessRunOptions.killTree opts a child into the tree kill, and
only the emulator spawn sets it.

…ator launch

The tree-kill test matched `emulator -version` too, a plain run that asks for no tree kill; it now matches the `-avd` launch only. The manual's shutdown note joins its line so the manual stays at 150 lines.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A first boot launches the emulator twice (cold boot, then the reboot from the new baseline), and both ask for it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The emulator launch keeps main's log-file stdio and adds `killTree`; the
driver test keeps the tree-kill test and drops the snapshot cold-boot
test main removed with ADR 0061.

Walkthrough

The process runner adds an optional killTree setting and uses it to terminate Windows process trees for selected launches. The Android driver enables the setting for emulator launches, but not adb commands. Tests cover Windows termination behavior and the Android launch options.

Suggested reviewers: v3ron

Merge Risk: Low · up to e5b2b

On Windows, killing the Android emulator now also ends its qemu child, which fixes the orphaned process. The tree kill finishes asynchronously, so after a failed seed boot or a slow shutdown the port or seed folder can briefly be released while the emulator is still stopping. This is a bounded edge case worth tightening, but it does not block merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to e5b2b

The change narrowly targets Windows emulator cleanup while preserving ordinary command behavior. The remaining uncertainty is whether cleanup always waits for every descendant process to terminate.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected change broadens termination from the spawned Windows emulator process to its descendants, using the existing process identity and execution authority. The default-off selection prevents this behavior from automatically propagating to other executable launches.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Handle termination checks whether the direct child is still running before dispatching the PID-based kill. The separate adb shutdown path still requires a successful ownership predicate, while restored handle-less destruction uses AVD-based discovery rather than trusting a recorded port alone.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Complete tree termination is not an awaited cleanup condition: taskkill runs independently of the direct-child wait promise, and shutdown ignores the final bounded-wait result. The base already lacked a descendant-completion barrier and used the same shutdown structure. The PR extends attempted termination, but source and tests do not prove completion before port or AVD cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider an explicit awaitable tree-termination outcome before releasing emulator resources, with retained cleanup ownership on incomplete termination and Windows coverage for delayed or failed taskkill. This would strengthen the existing lifecycle guarantee rather than remedy a verified new vulnerability.

Review: round 1 at 247a5da

Assessment: complete. Kind: full. No issue, so spec review was skipped.

  • Code review (Opus/high, behaviour and tests, one lens; the change decides which processes a Windows kill reaches): F0. Only AndroidDriver#startEmulator passes killTree, and no adb call does. run goes through spawn, so the option reaches both. Three probes on src/ports/windows-command.test.ts each failed the test they should: the treeKilled computation removed, the raw exit code reported, every child tree-killed. 18 of 18 pass at the head. src/drivers/android/index.test.ts was read, not run (it cannot run on Windows).
  • Claims review (Sonnet/medium): F0. The killTree doc, the killWindowsProcessTree and killProcessTree comments, both manuals and the test titles are true of the code. The src/ports/AGENTS.md changes other than the ProcessRunner row are table reflow.

Out of scope: none. Notes: none. Rerun: none.

Fallow's CRAP gate put `spawn` at 31.6 over its 30 limit once the
`killTree` condition joined it; `killsTree` holds that choice.

Wait for tree termination before cleanup.

On Windows, killTree starts taskkill asynchronously. ProcessHandle.wait() observes only the emulator child and does not wait for taskkill or confirm that qemu has terminated. #bootSeedTwice releases the reserved port immediately after kill(), and its caller can then remove the seed folder while the emulator tree is still stopping.

shutdown also ignores a failed five-second post-kill wait. Its caller can clear the handle even though the tree is not confirmed dead. The taskkill operation has a ten-second timeout, so the five-second wait does not cover the full operation.

Expose tree-kill completion from the process runner and await it before releasing the port, removing the folder, or clearing the handle. Treat a timeout or failed tree termination as cleanup failure. The asynchronous behavior already existed for .bat/.cmd wrappers; this PR extends the same ordering risk to the emulator through killTree.
