I'm not sure that we can use R character vector for this because (IIUC) R strings can't have embedded nuls, and that's completely possible with BinaryArray. My next best idea is to map BinaryArray to a list of raw vectors, and likewise special-case the translation of a list of raw vectors to BinaryArray.
