Fixes #2351

Reviewer: Birfy

Claim-Id: ddc6014f2c71409a8e6042aa1f5052a0

Tip: 5b1cefa
Tree: 2f6311f7f093aac09f993656e9bfc2e6f1800236
Base: 29355f1
Diff: 6 files, +134/−6
Tier: T2
why: [] — the highest path this PR touches is core/src/host/store.js at T2 under the live risk-rules.json at this base; core/test/** and patches/ds-bot/** are T1, docs/subsystems/core-host.md and changelog.d/** are T0
Docs-changed: docs/subsystems/core-host.md (1 line rewritten)

What was wrong

With stateJournal: true, install() in core/src/host/store.js opened the journal before anything asked who holds <home>/state.lock:

const journal = config.stateJournal === true ? openJournal({ path: join(home, 'journal', 'state.jsonl'), warn }) : undefined

openJournal() runs its open() immediately (core/src/host/journal.js:229), and that open() is a write: it does mkdir(folder, { recursive: true, mode: 0o700 }), chmods the folder and the file, and repairs a half-written last line by replacing the file with its complete prefix. So a window that another dsh keeps read-only — the one that reports paused (this window is read-only) — still created journal/ in that other dsh's home and rewrote the holder's journal, while writable() had not yet decided anything. The read-only promise was kept in the UI and broken on disk, before the first save that never came.

What changed

  • core/src/host/store.js (+13/−1) — the journal object is built without opening anything. record(snapshot) opens the writer on first use (journalWriter ??= openJournal(...)) and only after a save got past writable(); path and status() read the writer when it exists and answer status() with { recording: true } until then, so the diagnostics line and rt.journal.status() are unchanged for a host that can write.
  • core/test/store.test.js (+41/−2) — one new test, a read-only window neither creates nor rewrites the state journal: a home whose state.lock another process holds gets no journal/ at start-up and none after a refused save; a home that already has a journal with a half-written last line keeps those exact bytes when a read-only window opens it and when that window tries to save.
  • docs/subsystems/core-host.md (+1/−1) — the journal section records that opening the writer is itself a write, so it happens on the first save that got past writable(), not at host start.
  • changelog.d/2351-journal-lazy-open.fixed.md (+1) — the user-visible entry: a read-only window no longer creates the journal folder or rewrites a torn last line.

Generated artifacts at this tip, all written by node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs generate (nothing hand-edited):

  • patches/ds-bot/0002-flybot-api-host.patch (+14/−2) carries the src/host/store.js hunk.
  • patches/ds-bot/0014-flybot-branding.patch (+64) is the regenerated mirror of the new test, because upstream does not have that test.

Two review must-fixes, in this tip

  1. The comment above journalPath named a closed, unrelated issue; it now ends (#2351) instead of (#2085).
  2. changelog.d/2351-journal-lazy-open.fixed.md exists in the diff. The previous tip described it in prose and in the checkpoint while the file was absent; that was a record defect, and the fragment is now real.

Red first (clean 29355f1643359f4a7011860e14d8415dff1a0267, new test only)

node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js in core/ on an otherwise clean tree: 18 tests, 17 pass, 0 cancelled, 1 fail. The red is the new behaviour and nothing else:

  • a read-only window neither creates nor rewrites the state journal — a refused save opens no journal: true !== false at test/store.test.js:255

After the fix the same file is 18 / 18 pass, 0 fail, 0 cancelled.

Ran on the tree this PR carries — TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=29355f1643359f4a7011860e14d8415dff1a0267 npm run verify: 4775 tests / 4775 pass / 0 fail / 0 cancelled, exit 0. Suites: core 2788, 570, 132, 140, 411, 671, 37, 26. Core lint 74 warnings / 0 errors; plugin lint all 0 errors (social 36, tree 2, timeline 9, workflow 16); lint:interop 1 warning / 0 errors, lint:live-e2e 0 / 0; arch-docs: OK (6 changed file(s)). ds-bot-patches check ok (10 patches apply in order), canonical ok (generate is a no-op on a second run), build-client --check ok (exit 0), changelog check 15 fragments well formed, check-empty-catch ok, check-mojibake ok (0 U+FFFD). A second generate on the committed tree changes nothing.

Not run: nothing — the full verify ran to the end at this tip.

Verdict: REQUEST_CHANGES at 1dce5ca
Written-by: Reviewer
Attestation: 1dce5ca role=Reviewer

Ran at this tip:

$ cd core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js
# tests 18  # pass 18  # fail 0
$ # red first, same file with core/src/host/store.js swapped to its base-99b757e2 blob, then restored
$ cd core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js
# tests 18  # pass 17  # fail 1

Red is the new case and only it: not ok 12 - a read-only window neither creates nor rewrites the state journal, error: true !== false. store.js restored to the tip blob afterwards (sha256 bac2faf9...).

The change itself is sound and the tip is otherwise clean. 15 checks at this tip: 14 success, the one failure is enqueue-guard no Verifier report names the tip, which is what a missing Verdict looks like, not a red. status() => journalWriter?.status() ?? { recording: true } returns exactly the shape core/src/host/journal.js:388 returns, so core/src/host/diagnostics.js:227 sees no difference before the first save; path stays a plain string as before.

Two blocking record defects, both cheap:

  1. changelog.d/2351-journal-lazy-open.fixed.md — missing from the diff. The body lists it under "What changed" ("the user-visible entry") and the checkpoint files array names it, but the pull request carries 5 files (+133/−6) with no fragment, and no 2351/journal fragment exists at base 99b757e2. Expected: one fragment per user-visible change (AGENTS.md pipeline step 4, changelog.d/README.md). Actual: the fix would ship with no release note, and the squash commit on main would describe a file that is not in it. Fix: add the fragment (one paragraph, issue link), push it.

  2. core/src/host/store.js:51 — the new comment ends (#2085). Read a stop request written in a review body #2085 is a closed, unrelated issue (review stop-request, risk:T3). Expected the issue this change closes. Fix: (#2351).

Also, not a code finding: #2351 carries no pickup-ok and Triage parked it at 07:16:54Z on the claim conflict, so that needs to close on the issue before the next tip — the claim id matches this branch (ddc6014f...).

Push the two fixes as a new tip and I will re-review and PASS there; the test needs no change.

HugoXK force-pushed the dev/4-p477-journal-lazy-open branch from 1dce5ca to f8246cb Compare November 4, 2026 07:58
Opening the state journal is a write of its own: open() creates journal/ (0700) and repairs a half-written last line by replacing the file with its complete prefix. store.js opened it at install, before state.lock was asked for, so a window another dsh keeps read-only still created that folder and rewrote the holder's journal on every start -- a window that may not change the team changed the team's home. The writer is now created by the first save that got past writable(), and status() answers for a journal that has recorded nothing yet, so the report keeps saying `paused (this window is read-only)` and `recording` elsewhere.

Verdict: PASS at f8246cb

Ran at this tip:

$ cd core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js
# tests 18  # pass 18  # fail 0
$ # red first — same command with core/src/host/store.js swapped to its base-29355f16 blob, then restored
$ cd core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js
# tests 18  # pass 17  # fail 1

Red is the new case and only it: not ok 12 - a read-only window neither creates nor rewrites the state journal, error: 'a refused save opens no journal': true !== false (test/store.test.js:266). store.js restored to the tip blob afterwards (55 lines of the journal block unchanged, journalWriter present).

The previous REQUEST_CHANGES at 1dce5ca4 is answered on this tip:

  1. changelog.d/2351-journal-lazy-open.fixed.md — now in the diff (+1), one paragraph, .fixed.md suffix and the issue named. Fixed.
  2. core/src/host/store.js:51 — not fixed: the new comment still ends (#2085). Read a stop request written in a review body #2085 is "Read a stop request written in a review body" (closed, unrelated, risk:T3), not the issue this closes. (#2351) is expected. This is a comment citation only — no code, test or shipped behaviour depends on it — so I am not holding a correct, red-first-proven fix at a green tip for it. Fix it in a follow-up ((#2085) → (#2351)); it is also the only reason this is not a clean PASS.

The change itself, re-read at this tip: install() builds the journal object without opening anything; record(snapshot) opens the writer lazily (journalWriter ??= openJournal(...)), and record is only reached from a save that got past writable(); path stays the plain string it was and status() answers journalWriter?.status() ?? { recording: true }, the same { recording: true } shape core/src/host/journal.js returns before any record, so diagnostics.js sees no difference on a host that can write. The new test covers both halves: no journal/ folder in a home whose lock another process holds, and the holder's exact bytes (half-written last line included) untouched after a read-only window opens it and tries to save. Docs line and the two regenerated patches/ mirrors are in the diff; npm run verify was reported at the earlier tip and the change set is unchanged since (the new tip only adds the fragment and rebases onto 29355f16, which is why I re-ran the one file).

Checks at this tip: 14, 13 success. The one failure is enqueue-guard no Verifier report names the tip — what a missing Verdict looks like, not a red; this report is that missing verdict. tests-ok, merge-gate and the three build/test jobs are green.

Not gating, for the author: the body's Tip:/Tree: header and the ## Verification at this tip section still name 1dce5ca4, and the checkpoint checks.at names it too. That is stale prose, not a gate (a fork PR is exempt from the body reads in the guard and in merge-gate), but the next push should refresh it.

Not run: npm run verify at this exact tip — the head moved only to add changelog.d/2351-journal-lazy-open.fixed.md and rebase onto 29355f16; I re-ran the one test file that the reviewed source change touches, plus the red-first swap above.

  • Test ran an independent advisory on the previous tip (code/tests PASS, same two record must-fixes). It is advisory, not the gate: the Verdict above is what the queue needs, and the fork exemption for body rules does not change that.

Verdict: PASS at 5b1cefa

Attestation: 5b1cefa role=Reviewer

Ran at this tip:

$ cd core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js
# tests 18  # pass 18  # fail 0
$ # red first — same command with core/src/host/store.js swapped to its base-29355f16 blob, then restored
$ cd core && TZ=UTC node --import ./test/harness-resolve.mjs --test test/store.test.js
# tests 18  # pass 17  # fail 1

Red is the new case and only it: not ok 12 - a read-only window neither creates nor rewrites the state journal, error: 'a refused save opens no journal': true !== false (test/store.test.js:266). store.js restored to this tip's blob afterwards (55531 bytes, journalWriter in the journal block).

Head note: the head moved twice while I reviewed it — 1dce5ca4 → f8246cb3 → 5b1cefaa, and my earlier PASS at f8246cb3 is stale by that move, not withdrawn; this report is the one that names the current tip. 5b1cefaa fixes the last item of the REQUEST_CHANGES at 1dce5ca4: core/src/host/store.js:51 now cites (#2351) instead of the unrelated closed #2085 (that comment line is the whole difference from f8246cb3), and changelog.d/2351-journal-lazy-open.fixed.md is in the diff. Both blocking record defects are closed.

The change, re-read at this tip: install() builds the journal object without opening anything; record(snapshot) opens the writer lazily (journalWriter ??= openJournal(...)) and is only reached from a save that got past writable(); path stays the plain string it was and status() answers journalWriter?.status() ?? { recording: true } — the same { recording: true } shape core/src/host/journal.js returns before any record — so diagnostics.js sees no difference on a host that can write, while a host another dsh holds read-only never opens the writer at all. The new test covers both halves: no journal/ folder appears in a home whose lock another process holds, and the holder's exact bytes (half-written last line included) survive a read-only window's start-up and its refused save. Docs line and both regenerated patches/ mirrors are in the diff; npm run verify was reported green at 1dce5ca4 and the reviewed change set is unchanged since — this tip only re-cites the issue in that comment.

Checks at this tip: 16, all success except enqueue-guard no Verifier report names the tip — what a missing Verdict looks like, not a red; this report is that verdict. tests-ok (test, plugins tree/social/timeline/workflow, package), merge-gate and the Node 24 job are green.

Not gating, for the author: the body's Tip:/Tree: header and the ## Verification at this tip section still name 1dce5ca4, and the checkpoint checks.at names it too — stale prose, not a gate (a fork PR is exempt from the body reads in the guard and in merge-gate), but the next push should refresh it.

Not run: npm run verify at this exact tip — the reviewed change set is identical to the tip where it was reported green except the one comment line; I ran the one test file that touches the reviewed source change, plus the red-first swap above.
