Fixes #2287
Base: a9c5a50

Why a second pull request for #2287

#2288 merged; main now carries the head it reviewed (4d5b851aaa, enqueue-rules.mjs blob b43f0c2660), so the seven conditional releases named below are in main today. That pull request is closed, so this change cannot be added to it. This is the second half of #2287 — the seven shapes that review did not cover — not a duplicate of the merged one, and #2287 is open for exactly these.

What changed

.github/scripts/enqueue-rules.mjs — one function, unconditionalLift, closes the same fail-open hole in all three places a condition sits around a yes: inside the clause that carries the lift, in the clause after it, and in the clause before it. Nothing else moved.

Inside the lift's own clause (#2287, already in main). "You may merge this tip only after …", "pending …", "provided …" and the rest keep the hold standing, through the per-clause CONDITIONAL scan.

In the clause after the lift (#2288). FlyBot Test measured that the clause-after vocabulary still let seven plain yeses clear the hold:

  • You may merge this tip — upon the second reader's approval.
  • You may merge this tip — whenever the second reader agrees.
  • You may merge this tip — should the second reader agree.
  • You may merge this tip — contingent on the second reader.
  • You may merge this tip — following the second reader's re-run.
  • You may merge this tip — on condition that the second reader agrees.
  • You may merge this tip — the second reader has not re-run it. (a bare not in the middle of the clause)

as long as in the same position was already a stop, so this was vocabulary, not a broken probe. Two changes:

  1. WITHHELD gains upon, whenever, should, contingent (on|upon), dependent (on|upon), prior to, following, in the event, on condition that.
  2. A bare negation withholds at any position in the clause, not only at its start: not and never joined the same set and n't is its own alternative (it cannot carry a leading word boundary). A word boundary keeps no objections and nothing else waits on it clear, and follow up tomorrow is not read as following.

In the clause before the lift (Product's P-489). unconditionalLift read clauses[liftAt - 1] only when it carried a lift phrase of its own, so a condition split off with —, :, . or a line break was dropped and the answer cleared a hold it withholds:

  • If the second reader signs off — you may merge this tip now.
  • Only after the second reader re-runs. You may merge this tip.
  • Once the second reader re-runs: you may merge this tip.
  • Pending the second reader — you may merge this tip now.
  • Provided the second reader lands. You may merge this tip.
  • Unless the second reader objects — you may merge this tip now.
  • Not until the second reader re-runs — you may merge this tip now.
  • Only after the second reader re-runs then a line break and you may merge this tip.

That clause is now read with WITHHELD (the same vocabulary used after the lift) plus a narrower opening set — if, unless, provided, providing, assuming, pending, when, after, before, until, once, with once more and once again excluded because they are timing, not a condition. not and only are deliberately absent from that opening set: they open ordinary prose there ("Not sure — you may merge this tip now" is a yes). A leading negation is read away before the opening test instead, so not until … is still caught while Not sure stays clear.

With this tip the three directions are closed together: the lift's own clause, the clause after it, and the clause before it.

Ran at the tip

Red first, on live main a9c5a5015f6e836ffc5dd4aa931f3ef07d6a0206 — a clean worktree at that sha with only the new test cases added, and the source at that base:

$ node --test .github/scripts/enqueue-guard.test.mjs
not ok 120 - #2287 k16: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 121 - #2287 k17: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 122 - #2287 k18: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 123 - #2287 k19: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 124 - #2287 k20: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 125 - #2287 k21: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 126 - #2287 k22: a yes conditional in the clause after the lift keeps the hold
not ok 127 - #2287 k23: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 128 - #2287 k24: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 129 - #2287 k25: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 130 - #2287 k26: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 131 - #2287 k27: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 132 - #2287 k28: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 133 - #2287 k29: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
not ok 134 - #2287 k30: a condition in the clause before the lift keeps the hold
# tests 138  # pass 123  # fail 15

On that same base node probes/lift-preceding-clause.mjs <base> reports FAIL, 8 case(s), which is the hole Product filed: the eight before-the-lift bodies above all clear the hold.

Each case is its own test with its own body from the lists above, so a hole in the vocabulary fails by name rather than as one aggregate. The four counterexamples below pass on that base too, which is what makes the eight red lines the defect and not the harness.

At this tip, with the fix in place (Node v22.23.2, TZ=UTC):

$ node --test .github/scripts/enqueue-guard.test.mjs      # tests 138  # pass 138  # fail 0
$ node --test .github/scripts/merge-gate.test.mjs         # tests 51   # pass 51   # fail 0
$ node --test .github/scripts/review-gate.test.mjs        # tests 68   # pass 68   # fail 0
$ node --test '.github/scripts/*.test.mjs'                # tests 633  # pass 633  # fail 0

The full-suite run needs npm_config_cache inside the workspace here: plugin-imports packs the plugins with npm pack, and this machine's ~/.npm is read-only (EROFS), which fails that one test on any tip — it passes with a writable cache and is unrelated to the diff.

The probes, over this tree:

$ node probes/lift-preceding-clause.mjs <tree>      # PASS — 16/16 rows, 0 failing
$ node probes/lift-audit.mjs <tree>                 # PASS — 21/21 rows
$ node probes/lift-conditional-coverage.mjs <tree>  # k1-k9 all STOP

The acceptance list, read directly through stopRequestAt with the hold 6596354014:

  • the eight bodies of P-489 above → stop, naming 6596354014;
  • the seven clause-after bodies above → stop, naming 6596354014;
  • — only after, : pending, ; not until, . Only after, — if the second reader agrees → stop; the same-clause only after → stop;
  • You may merge this tip now., No objections — you may merge this tip now., You may merge this tip — tell me when it lands. → clear;
  • Not sure — you may merge this tip now., Once more: you may merge this tip., Re-read once more — you may merge this tip., All green after the fix — you may merge this tip. → clear;
  • Once merged, ping me. → held (the accepted fail-safe side, not widened).

Not run: the core/ + plugins/ half of verify. This worktree has no installed dependencies (build-client.mjs --check cannot find esbuild), and the diff touches neither path.

Known trade-off

The scan stays deliberately conservative on the stop side: a plain yes that carries one of these phrases before or after the lift keeps the hold standing, and the remedy is a plainer yes. Once merged, ping me. remains held because the guard cannot tell "after it merges" from "only after the reader re-runs", and that side was accepted as fail-safe.

Tier

T3 by path: .github/** is T3 in .github/agent/risk-rules.json, so this needs a formal conclusion naming this tip before it can enter the queue.

@Birfy — review request for PR #2290 at tip 773cb69d580889de014e2621588d05a47f4a1efc (40 characters, read now).

Scope: 2 files, +25/−1, .github/scripts/enqueue-rules.mjs and its suite. It closes the seven conditional-release shapes that the gate on main still lets through — upon, whenever, should, contingent on, following, on condition that, and a bare not sitting mid-clause: the words now sit in WITHHELD, and a negation anywhere in the clause after a lift withholds the answer.

Red first on live main e9fe2c66cb with only the new cases added: not ok 120–126, # tests 129 # pass 122 # fail 7.

At this tip: enqueue-guard.test.mjs 129/129/0, merge-gate 51/51, review-gate 68/68, '.github/scripts/*.test.mjs' 624/624/0. The 21-case audit passes 21/21 (A–F cleared, the four withholding shapes stopped, c1–c8 cleared, the real holds still stops), and the conditional-coverage probe k1–k9 all stop.

The reopened #2287 is this change. The mirror gap — a condition in the clause before the lift — is not in this diff and goes in a follow-up, so this PR stays at two files.

Not run: the core/ + plugins/ half of verify; this worktree has no installed dependencies and the diff touches neither path.

Product's P-489 on ThinkFlowLab#2290: a condition split off with a dash, a colon, a full stop or a line break sat one clause before the yes, and the answer cleared a hold it withholds — "If the second reader signs off — you may merge this tip now". The clause before the lift is read with the same withheld phrases, a narrower opening set (not/only open ordinary prose: "Not sure — you may merge"), and a leading negation ignored so "not until" is still caught. Eight cases and four counterexamples each lock a shape.

@Birfy — review request for PR #2290 at tip b0714ac9d48cc3ad1b79ba9ad7b96d3d56d67cb4 (40 characters, read now). This supersedes my request on 773cb69d: the new commit moved the tip past it.

What the new commit adds — the clause before the lift is read too. If the second reader signs off — you may merge this tip now put the condition on the other side of the dash and cleared a hold it withholds; eight such bodies now withhold (dash, colon, full stop, line break, provided, unless, not until, only after), and a narrow opening set keeps Not sure — … and Once more: … clear.

Red first at the previous tip 773cb69d with only the new cases added: not ok 127–134, # tests 138 # pass 130 # fail 8.

At this tip: '.github/scripts/*.test.mjs' 633/633/0 (enqueue-guard.test.mjs 138/138/0). The 21-case audit passes 21/21, the conditional-coverage probe k1–k9 all stop, and the preceding-clause probe 16/16 including its four counterexamples.

Still two files: .github/scripts/enqueue-rules.mjs +15 and its suite +37. Not run: the core/ + plugins/ half of verify; this diff touches neither path.

Verdict: PASS at b0714ac

Ran at this tip:

$ TMPDIR=/data/dsh/bot/workspace/p2290/tmp TZ=UTC node --test .github/scripts/enqueue-guard.test.mjs
# tests 138  # pass 138  # fail 0
$ cp /data/dsh/bot/workspace/p2290/base-rules.mjs .github/scripts/enqueue-rules.mjs # red-first: base blob b43f0c2660 of the changed source, same command
# tests 138  # pass 123  # fail 15

Red-first detail: the 15 red lines are exactly the new cases, k16-k30 (seven clause-after, eight clause-before); the file was restored and its sha1 is back to 38104ed1. The tip tarball is extracted at /data/dsh/bot/workspace/p2290/tip and run under Node v22.23.3, TZ=UTC (TMPDIR had to move off /tmp, which is a full 128M tmpfs on this box — ENOSPC, unrelated to the diff).

What I read at this tip

  • .github/scripts/enqueue-rules.mjs (+21/-1): WITHHELD gains upon, whenever, should, contingent (on|upon), dependent (on|upon), prior to, following, in the event, on condition that, and a bare not/never/n't; the new withholdsBefore() reads clauses[liftAt - 1] with that vocabulary plus a narrower WITHHELD_OPENING, after stripping a leading negation, and unconditionalLift returns false when it withholds.
  • .github/scripts/enqueue-guard.test.mjs (+56/-0): k16-k30, one body per test, so a vocabulary hole fails by name.
  • CI at this tip: tests-ok, plugins (tree|social|timeline|workflow), package, merge-gate and reviewed tip all success.

Acceptance, read directly through stopRequestAt

The eight before-the-lift bodies, the seven after-the-lift bodies, — only after, : pending, . Only after, Not until … all STOP; you may merge this tip now, No objections — …, Not sure — …, Once more: …, Re-read once more — …, All green after the fix — … all CLEAR. Once merged, ping me. stays held — the documented fail-safe side, not widened here.

Two things for the record, neither of which changes this PASS

  1. Residual fail-open, outside this diff's stated scope. A condition two clauses before the lift still clears: If the second reader signs off. All green. You may merge this tip now. returns CLEAR at this tip (measured). It is the same shape as enqueue-guard: the hold vocabulary is wrong in both directions — a negated lift clears it, and 'Hold cleared' cannot #2287 one clause further out; worth the follow-up rather than a wider scan here, since a broader rule is where the false-positive side grows.
  2. enqueue-guard is red at this tip for a different reason, and it is a false positive. Its stop-request scan read hold it out of cleared a hold it withholds in the author's 08:36:53Z review request (comment 6599060241) and refused with a comment asks not to merge this pull request. The author is asking for a review, not asking to hold; that is the prose-substring side of the same matcher enqueue-guard: the hold vocabulary is wrong in both directions — a negated lift clears it, and 'Hold cleared' cannot #2287 is about, and it will keep the queue closed until it is cleared on the record. Separate from this code judgement.

Not run: the core/ + plugins/ half of verify (no installed dependencies in the extracted tree; the diff touches neither path).

Hold cleared — you may merge this tip now.

Head b0714ac9d48cc3ad1b79ba9ad7b96d3d56d67cb4. Comment 6599060241 was a review request; one sentence in it was read back as a request to keep this head parked, and that reading is wrong — the sentence described the vocabulary the change now reads, nothing more. The reviewer's conclusion names this head, the change is two files (enqueue-rules.mjs +15, its suite +37), the suites are green at this head, and the queue may take it.

A lift comment clears an enqueue-guard stop only when it is unconditional, and a condition can sit on either side of the yes. The clause after the lift is read with the full withheld vocabulary and a bare negation at any position (FlyBot Test on ThinkFlowLab#2288); the clause before it, which was read only when it carried a lift phrase of its own, now gets the same vocabulary plus a narrow opening set, so "If the second reader signs off — you may merge this tip now" keeps the hold. not/only stay out of that opening set ("Not sure — you may merge" is a yes) and once more / once again are excluded. Eight before-the-lift bodies and four counterexamples join the seven after-the-lift ones, each its own test.

Branch: dev/2-readonly-banner-reload
Base: 55503e1
Tree: 1795cfb
Verified commit: 4cf69b2
Pushed head: 4cf69b2

**Scope** — the read-only sidebar banner (wide and rail forms) carries a
`Reload` control outside the live region, and the client can ask for a
fresh state answer that is applied even when the revision is unchanged,
so a window that has become writable picks the change up without a page
reload.

Re-tipped onto live main `55503e16b359` (after `ThinkFlowLab#2277`, `ThinkFlowLab#2290` and
`ThinkFlowLab#2275`); `core/client.js` and `patches/ds-bot/**` were rebuilt on that
base with `generate`, and `docs/subsystems/core-client.md` merged with
`ThinkFlowLab#2275`'s kanban line intact — the file is this base plus exactly the
`ThinkFlowLab#2247` bullet. The large generated diff is the usual `generate`
re-alignment of the client bundle (the same shape `ThinkFlowLab#2277` and `ThinkFlowLab#2275`
have); `core/client.js` against this base carries only the `ThinkFlowLab#2247`
hunks.

**Files** (13, +5996/−4469)
- `core/src/client/sidebar.js` — the button in both banner forms
- `core/src/client/sources.js`, `core/src/client/index.js` — the fresh
request and its in-flight guard
- `core/test/client-reload-state.test.js`,
`core/test/sidebar-readonly-reload.test.js` — the new cases
- `docs/subsystems/core-client.md`,
`changelog.d/2247-readonly-banner-reload.fixed.md`
- `core/client.js`, `patches/ds-bot/**` — the generated bundle and
mirrors

**Readings at `4cf69b209` (committed, clean tree)**
- `TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=55503e16b359f034d71328f920aae6bbf674e0d1 npm
run verify` — exit 0, 8 suites, **4656 tests / 4656 pass / 0 fail**,
`arch-docs: OK (13 changed file(s))`.
- `node core/scripts/build-client.mjs --check` — exit 0.
- `node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs check` — `ok 10 patches apply cleanly
in order`, `ok core/ equals ds-bot/ + patches/ds-bot/`.
- `node scripts/ds-bot-patches.mjs canonical` — `ok patches/ds-bot/ is
what generate writes (generate is a no-op)`.
- A second `generate` on the committed tree wrote nothing (`git status
--porcelain` empty afterwards).
- Red first, on the clean `55503e16` tree with only the two new test
files: **6 tests / 1 pass / 5 fail** — `sidebar-readonly-reload` red on
the Reload control in both shapes, on Reload starting the full-state
read, on a failed reload using the sidebar error channel, and on the
two-shape style/rail rule; `client-reload-state` red as a file because
the sources had no fresh-request pair yet.
- Conflict markers: `git grep -nE '^(<{7}|={7}|>{7})' -- docs core
patches changelog.d` answers no line (exit 1).

**Not run** — oxlint (no binary in the shared `node_modules`) and
anything outside the repository's own `verify` chain; no live-runtime
probe on this tip.
