fix(workflow): a read-only window offers no write entry in the workflow list

Fixes #2200

Claim-Id: d0d29d102bb24129b19852f96d35f790

Tier: T2

What this fixes

In a read-only window the Workflow plugin's list in the sidebar still draws
every write entry. On c57efcfa the four are unconditional: the New
button (plugins/workflow/client.js:2176), the row's onContextMenu
(:2194), which opens Rename and Delete, and the Hand a task to a
Workflow
row (:2206). The host refuses each write (bots/workflow answers
bot/read-only), so the reader is offered controls that cannot work. Section
reads roster.readOnly nowhere.

The graph page and the Settings → Workflows page already answer this question
(#2187/#2190, #2176/#2181). The list itself was never included: a surface that
was missed, not a regression — the page-top read-only sentence #2187 added is
still drawn on this base.

The change

plugins/workflow/client.js (+8/−4):

  • Section derives readOnlyReason = typeof roster?.readOnly === 'string' ? roster.readOnly.trim() : '' and locked = readOnlyReason !== '' beside its
other state (:1952-1955). This is the same expression
    core/src/client/workflows.js:570 uses, so a non-string value and a
whitespace-only reason both count as writable.
  • New is drawn as locked ? null : … (:2176), the row's onContextMenu
is locked ? undefined : … (:2194) so the menu cannot open, Hand a task
    to a Workflow
    is locked ? null : … (:2206), and the context-menu render
is rowMenu && !locked ? portal(…) (:2280) as the second line of defence.
  • Creates, renames, deletes and hands-to-a-workflow are otherwise untouched:
the same calls, the same refresh after a success, the same refusal
handling, and the dialog work workflow: Rename / Delete / Create swallow the host's refusal — the dialog stays open and the sentence is painted behind the mask #2193 landed stays where it is.

plugins/workflow/src/** is untouched: the service's refusal is the correct
behaviour and stays.

Why the sidebar gets no read-only sentence

#2187 already puts the host's own sentence on this same screen, at the top of
the Workflow page, in a role="status" line, and this change does not move
it. A second copy inside the sidebar list would be new scope with no evidence
that a reader misses the first one; #2200's acceptance is that the four write
entries are unreachable in a read-only window, not that the sentence is
repeated.

Add link in the drawer is governed by editingNow and is covered by
#2187's own case; it is not touched here.

Red first

Clean git archive c57efcfae49a93561b11c045cc4bafb4de0cf8f9 tree with only
plugins/workflow/test/client.test.js from this branch in place, so the
tree's plugins/workflow/client.js is the base blob, sha256
5221655a5f163bac72ef98a9c4a837b95ad2a059f028980fcb0980232dd787ad:

not ok 124 - #2200: a read-only window offers no New, no Rename, no Delete and no Hand a task
  error: |-
a read-only window offers no write entry in the list
    + actual - expected
    + [ 'New', 'Hand a task', 'Rename', 'Delete' ]
    - []
# tests 126 / # pass 125 / # fail 1

The assertion is read after the row's context menu has been opened, so the red
is "the entries are still there", not "the menu was never looked at": on the
base the menu really opens and carries Rename and Delete.

The same file carries the cases that must keep today's behaviour and they are
green on the base: with roster missing, readOnly: '' and readOnly: ' ',
all four entries stay and New still opens the create dialog; and #2187's
page-top role="status" sentence is still drawn.

One honest note on that archive tree: a plugin-wide run there reports 367
tests / 365 pass / 2 fail, the second failure being test/host.test.js
cannot load @deepseek-ai/dsh-llm because an extracted archive has no
node_modules. It fails the same way on the untouched base, so it is the
tree, not this change; the client suite alone is 126/125/1 as quoted.

TZ=UTC ARCH_DOCS_BASE=c57efcfae49a93561b11c045cc4bafb4de0cf8f9 npm run verify
— exit 0, run on the committed tip:

  • core 2657, plugins/social 555, plugins/tree 127, plugins/timeline 140,
    plugins/workflow 368, .github/scripts 598, interop 37, live-e2e 24 —
    every suite # fail 0.
  • lint: core 74 warnings / 0 errors; plugins 36 / 9 / 2 / 16 warnings / 0
    errors; interop 1 warning / 0 errors; live-e2e 0 / 0.
  • arch-docs: OK (4 changed file(s)); the subsystem sentence is in this diff,
    and no Docs-not-needed: is used.
  • node .github/scripts/changelog.mjs check: 41 fragment(s) well formed.
  • core/scripts/build-client.mjs --check passes (no core/src/client/
change); ds-bot-patches check and canonical pass, and generate was not
    run.

Load condition: 80 cores, default concurrency, this verify was the only one
running (load1 ≈ 12 while it ran).

Not run, and why: no ds-bot-patches generate (no mirror carries this plugin
file); no core build (bundle unaffected); no smoke test (no index.js or
src/host/ change).

Scope

  • plugins/workflow/client.js — the derived locked flag and the four draw
    sites above.
  • plugins/workflow/test/client.test.js — three cases: the read-only window,
the three writable shapes, and workflow: the plugin's Workflow graphs page stays fully editable in a read-only window #2187's page-top sentence.
  • docs/subsystems/workflow.md — one sentence on the list being read-only in
    such a window.
  • changelog.d/2200-workflow-list-readonly.fixed.md — the user-visible entry.

Out of scope, deliberately: a second read-only sentence in the sidebar; the
drawer's Add link; the graph page and Settings page (#2187, #2176); the
three refusal dialogs (#2193).

policy/gates.json lists .github/scripts/merge-gate.mjs, review-gate.mjs,
pass-label.mjs, risk-gate.mjs, scripts/self-test-catalog.mjs,
.github/scripts/policy-sign.mjs, .github/workflows/test.yml and policy/
as gate files; none of the four files here is on that list, so this body needs
no Policy-sign: line.

In a read-only window the sidebar's Workflow list still drew New, the row
context menu's Rename and Delete, and Hand a task to a Workflow. The host
refuses each of them with bot/read-only, so the reader was offered controls
that cannot work. The list now derives `locked` from `roster.readOnly`, with
the typeof-and-trim rule `core/src/client/workflows.js:570` uses, and draws
none of the four; a whitespace-only or non-string reason counts as writable.

No second read-only sentence is added: ThinkFlowLab#2187 already puts the host's sentence
at the top of the same page, and a copy in the list would be new scope.

Verdict: PASS at 95e961c

Ran at this tip:

$ cd plugins/workflow && node --import ./test/resolve.mjs --test test/client.test.js
# tests 126 # pass 126 # fail 0
$ node --import ./test/resolve.mjs --test $(ls test/*.test.js | grep -v host.test.js)
# tests 366 # pass 366 # fail 0
$ cp base-client.js client.js && node --import ./test/resolve.mjs --test test/client.test.js
# tests 126 # pass 125 # fail 1

Red first (hard requirement): with only plugins/workflow/client.js swapped back to the base blob at c57efcfa (tip copy of the test file kept), #2200: a read-only window offers no New, no Rename, no Delete and no Hand a task is the one case that turns red (not ok 124, 125/126 pass). The other two new cases (writable shapes, #2187's page-top sentence) pass on base by design, so the body's "Three tests are red on the old code" is off by two — noted, not blocking: the change-set is still proven necessary by the read-only case.

The change: client.js derives readOnlyReason/locked from roster.readOnly with the same typeof-and-trim rule as core/src/client/workflows.js:570, then draws New (:2176), the row's onContextMenu (:2194) and Hand a task to a Workflow (:2206) only when unlocked, with rowMenu && !locked as the second line of defence (:2280). A whitespace-only or non-string reason stays writable, and the three cases pin both sides; no write path, refresh or refusal handling was touched.

Scope: compare c57efcfa...95e961c5 is ahead 1 — one commit, four files (client, its test, docs/subsystems/workflow.md, changelog.d/2200-*.md), nothing outside #2200's surface, no gate file.

CI on the tip: tests-ok, merge-gate, plugins (workflow|timeline|social|tree), package, Node 24, judge, agent-audience all success; the only failing context is enqueue-guard (missing agent-pr, no PASS yet at this tip, and a Reviewer: Birfy line that #1228 refuses) — I add the label, assign, and fix that line to Reviewer: Reviewer alongside this PASS.

Not run locally: plugins/workflow/test/host.test.js (this box cannot resolve the workspace's @deepseek-ai/dsh-llm, an environment gap, not this diff — CI's plugins (workflow) covers it); the full npm run verify from the body was not re-run here, the affected suites above were.
