Portal posts GetDataRequest to Home with no AccessContext — post is rejected at the identity gate

What is failing

A portal-side post into a user's reads hub (portal/reads-…, target Home) is dispatched with no AccessContext — neither an ambient Context nor a CircuitContext was attached. The PostPipeline rejects it at the access gate, so the post never delivers and the user identity is lost for that request. The concrete case is a GetDataRequest targeting Home, i.e. the portal home data load for one user.

Probable cause

Medium confidence (no stack frame was captured in the burst, so this is inferred from the message alone): the portal code that posts the GetDataRequest to Home runs outside any ambient AccessContextScope — most plausibly on a background task or a code path that constructs its own post instead of going through the circuit/HTTP entry point, where the user context is captured automatically. The diagnostic message itself names the three sanctioned wiring options, and none of them is being used at this site.

Impact

Single occurrence on one pod so far, but the failure mode is user-facing: when it fires, the affected user's Home data request is dropped. Whether this is a one-off race during hub initialization or a reproducible hole in the portal's post wiring needs confirmation from portal logs around the same timestamp.

Reading. Ops/Actions/logs-memexcloud-20260926-5227-nullctx-reads-15h (memex-cloud, 900 min) landed 100/100 lines. The query cut at its limit of 100. That is 50 refusals, all hub=portal/reads-…, message=GetDataRequest, from 09-25 19:05Z to 09-26 05:46Z. Every one is on ReplicaSet 589ff8f895 (3.0.0-ci.9291), and none is on a ci.9349 pod. That rate, about 4.7 per hour, is far above what the fold comments here suggest. The recurrence bot lags about 6 h.

The pattern. Nearly every refusal falls 15–25 s after a run of the Prod synthetic probe starts. That workflow runs every 15 min. A few pairs:

This also explains the "two pods within 0–4 ms" coincidence noted earlier: the probe fetches several URLs back to back, and the load balancer spreads them across pods.

The exact match. Probe run 36221755019 (job 108348200729) logged app host: 200 -> (no redirect) https://memex.meshweaver.cloud/Store at 05:46:01.2Z. The refusal Ops/Logs/memex-cloud-1790401560868681394-f8f895-ghgjt is at 05:46:00.868Z with target=Store.

The mechanism.

PublicSite.UsePublicHostRedirect (core, memex/Memex.Portal.Shared/Seo/PublicSite.cs) runs before UserContextMiddleware. That order is deliberate, so a request that only bounces does not mint a guest identity. As a result no AccessContext exists yet when it runs.
Its default decision calls SeoResolver.Resolve(rootHub, path), which captures the ambient identity for the owner read. It captured null, and the read was refused on portal/reads-{meshId}.
The resolver's fail-open read that refusal as "not public".
So the app host serves public pages with 200 instead of a 301 to www.meshweaver.cloud. The probe's memex.meshweaver.cloud job has been red on every run since at least 00:03Z for exactly this.
The targets are the space roots, because a stranger or the probe fetches /Store, /Home, /AgenticEngineering, … on the app host.

The fix. #5741 runs that decision as UserContextMiddleware.ResolveHttpCaller, which is Anonymous for these unauthenticated requests. PublicHostRedirectAsksAsTheStrangerTest fails on the old code, logs the production line verbatim, and passes with the fix. PublicSiteTest stubbed the decision, so it could never see this.

Also here. #5439 (target=Reinsurance) is closed as a duplicate of this issue. The target=Pricing fingerprint the bot folded into #5561 is this sender, not #5561's.

Status. This issue stays open. It is sev:H, so it closes on post-roll verification. After a roll that carries #5741:

Whether anything besides this decision and the Blazor readers fixed in Plugins#2333 and The Blazor.Portal comment described a state #2293 ended #2360 still posts from portal/reads-… with no identity. The Blazor.Portal comment described a state #2293 ended #2360 is in ci.9349 (Plugins 5e8b85f), which is rolling onto memex-cloud now; none of its pods had served traffic in this window. Neither deployed image carries fix(access-context): a refused identity-less post names the call chain that issued it (Refs #5227) #5693's post-site Warning.
About a quarter of the 50 refusals have no probe run 0–60 s before them (for example 20:06:51Z, 20:08:52Z, 21:06:50Z, 21:12:12Z, 21:25:47Z and 03:46:58Z; the probe ran at 19:01, 19:19, 19:30, 19:45, 20:01, 20:22, … on 09-25). Those are most likely real strangers or crawlers on the app host taking the same path, since the targets are the same set of space roots. I did not verify that.

The root repair is #5741 (e9db2b0903, public-host redirect resolves its mesh read as the anonymous HTTP caller). It is an ancestor of the current memex-cloud core build 45e7f94e4ec36417ebcbda6125f7061c0a803f10; all three ci.9408 replicas are Ready and have served their post-roll windows.

I ran three separate, untruncated Logs reads, each constrained to exactly one live ci.9408 pod and covering its full lifetime since boot, for AccessContext must never be null.*hub=portal/reads:

Each window completed with no landing failures.
