PR Evaluation Report

Summary

This PR integrates PostHog into a Nuxt 4 movies app using a manual client plugin (posthog.client.ts) with posthog-js. It adds event captures across multiple components (login, logout, search, media selection, video playback, language switching, tab navigation) and configures error tracking via capture_exceptions and a vue:error hook. However, it omits user identification (identify/reset) and does not configure a reverse proxy.

Files changed Lines added Lines removed
12 +100 -6

Confidence score: 5/5 🧙

  • No identify() call: The login page captures a login_succeeded event but never calls ?.identify() to link events to the authenticated user. All events remain anonymous, defeating the purpose of having a login flow. [CRITICAL]
  • No reset() on logout: The handleLogout function in NavBar.vue captures logout_completed but never calls ?.reset(), meaning the next user on the same browser inherits the previous user's identity. [MEDIUM]
  • No reverse proxy configured: No reverse proxy or rewrite rules are set up, making client-side events vulnerable to ad blockers. [MEDIUM]

File changes

Filename Score Description
plugins/posthog.client.ts 4/5 New PostHog client plugin with init, error tracking, and dev mode debug. Well-structured with env var validation.
nuxt.config.ts 4/5 Adds PostHog runtime config under runtimeConfig.public.posthog.
package.json 5/5 Adds posthog-js dependency.
.env.example 5/5 Documents required env vars.
components/NavBar.vue 2/5 Captures logout_completed but missing ?.reset() call.
pages/login.vue 2/5 Captures login_succeeded but missing ?.identify() call.
components/media/Card.vue 5/5 Captures media_selected with enriched properties.
components/media/Details.vue 5/5 Captures media_tab_selected with tab property.
components/video/Card.vue 5/5 Captures video_played with video_type property.
components/LanguageSwitcher.vue 4/5 Captures language_changed but missing the selected locale as a property.
pages/search.vue 4/5 Captures search_submitted but missing the search query as a property.
types/posthog.d.ts 5/5 Proper TypeScript augmentation for `` on NuxtApp.

App sanity check ✅

Criteria Result Description
App builds and runs Yes No syntax errors; plugin pattern is valid for Nuxt 4.
Preserves existing env vars & configs Yes Existing BASE_URL and apiBaseUrl preserved; config additions are additive.
No syntax or type errors Yes All files are syntactically valid; TypeScript types properly augmented.
Correct imports/exports Yes posthog-js import is correct; useNuxtApp() and useRuntimeConfig() are auto-imported by Nuxt.
Minimal, focused changes Yes All changes relate directly to PostHog integration.
Pre-existing issues None —

Issues

No issues found.

Other completed criteria

  • All changes are relevant to PostHog integration
  • Correct files modified for the Nuxt framework
  • Code follows existing codebase patterns (Vue SFC style, optional chaining on ``)
  • Environment variables documented in .env.example
  • Build configuration valid (posthog-js added to dependencies)

PostHog implementation ⚠️

Criteria Result Description
PostHog SDKs installed Yes posthog-js ^1.425.1 added to package.json dependencies.
PostHog client initialized Yes posthog.init() called in plugins/posthog.client.ts with key, host, and defaults from runtimeConfig.
capture() Yes 7 meaningful capture calls across 6 components.
identify() No No identify() call on login; no reset() call on logout.
Error tracking Yes capture_exceptions configured with unhandled errors/rejections; vue:error hook calls captureException().
Reverse proxy No No reverse proxy or rewrite rules configured.

Issues

  • Missing identify() on login: The login.vue page captures login_succeeded but never calls ?.identify(userId). The useAuth() composable presumably returns user info, but no identification call is made. Without this, all events remain anonymous and cannot be linked to the authenticated user. Add ?.identify(response.user.id, { email: response.user.email }) (or equivalent) after successful login. [CRITICAL]
  • Missing reset() on logout: The handleLogout function in NavBar.vue calls logout() and captures an event but never calls ?.reset(). This means subsequent anonymous browsing or a different user's session will be attributed to the previous user. Add ?.reset() after logout(). [MEDIUM]
  • No reverse proxy configured: No Nuxt server middleware, rewrites, or external proxy is set up to route PostHog requests through a first-party domain. This leaves events vulnerable to being blocked by ad blockers. [MEDIUM]
  • Uses manual plugin instead of @posthog/nuxt module: For Nuxt v4, the recommended approach is @posthog/nuxt which provides auto-imported composables and automatic exception capture. The manual plugin works but misses out on built-in features. [LOW]

Other completed criteria

  • API key loaded from environment variable via runtimeConfig.public.posthog.publicKey
  • Host correctly configured via runtimeConfig.public.posthog.host
  • Error tracking covers both unhandled errors/rejections and Vue component errors
  • Dev mode debug logging enabled via loaded callback
  • Graceful handling when env vars are missing (throws in dev, returns silently in prod)

PostHog insights and events ✅

Filename PostHog events Description
plugins/posthog.client.ts captureException Captures Vue component errors and unhandled exceptions/rejections for error tracking.
pages/login.vue login_succeeded Tracks successful login attempts.
components/NavBar.vue logout_completed Tracks user logouts.
pages/search.vue search_submitted Tracks search submissions.
components/media/Card.vue media_selected Tracks media item clicks with media_id and media_type properties.
components/media/Details.vue media_tab_selected Tracks tab navigation (overview/videos/photos) with tab property.
components/video/Card.vue video_played Tracks video playback with video_type property.
components/LanguageSwitcher.vue language_changed Tracks locale switching.

Issues

  • search_submitted lacks search query property: The event doesn't include the search term. Adding { query: input.value } would enable analysis of what users are searching for. [LOW]
  • language_changed lacks selected locale property: The event doesn't include which locale was selected. Adding { locale: event.target.value } would enable locale usage analysis. [LOW]

Other completed criteria

  • Events represent real user actions (login, search, media browsing, video playback)
  • Events enable product insights (login → media_selected → video_played funnel is possible)
  • Key events include enriched properties (media_id, media_type, tab, video_type)
  • No PII in event properties
  • Event names are descriptive and follow consistent snake_case convention
