Closes #5091

Why

An installed Agent package can serve at most two images over HTTP, and only by declaring the home-browser-tab slot — contributions.homeBrowserTab.iconPaths is the only allowlist the asset route consults. A package that needs real art or data files (the driving case: a game-surface Experience shipping a tileset, sprite atlas, and tilemap JSON) cannot ship them at all; the workarounds are inlining art as data: URIs into a bundle that must already be a single file, or abusing unrelated upload routes.

What changed

Capability API 1.10 — contributions.assets (packages/shared/src/schemas/capability-package.schema.ts):

  • A manifest may declare assets.paths — up to 256 relative paths, image extensions (png/webp/gif/jpeg) plus .json for tilemap/atlas metadata. No SVG/HTML/scripts — active documents stay off this same-origin route.
  • Every declared path must be hash-pinned in files[] (superRefine, fails at install with a clear message). The pre-existing icon-paths ⊆ files[] check is hoisted out of the home-browser-tab slot branch so it now applies whenever iconPaths is present — previously a manifest could carry unvalidated icon paths by omitting the slot.
  • contributions.assets is gated on schemaVersion 2 + capabilityApi ≥ 1.10, so authors get the versioned compatibility message instead of a cryptic strict-schema error on older Engines. supportedCapabilityApi bumps to {1, 10}.

Serving (package-manager.service.ts, capability-packages.routes.ts):

  • browserTabAsset is generalized to packageAsset: the allowlist becomes the union of iconPaths and assets.paths; nothing else in the verification chain moves (path containment, files[] membership, content-type allowlist, hash + TOCTOU re-verification on every read). .json joins the content-type map; manifest.json is explicitly refused.
  • Declared-path normalization is throw-safe: a single unsafe declared path is treated as "not servable" instead of turning every asset request for that package into a 500. On-disk integrity failures still throw loudly (the lifecycle regression pins that posture — tampering is never a quiet 404).
  • With Capability package client bundles re-download in full on every app load (no ETag/304 anywhere) #5082's caching, an asset requested with ?v=<installed version> is served public, max-age=31536000, immutable — a shipped tileset costs one download per version.

Forward compatibility (review-found blocker): catalog parsing was all-or-nothing over strict schemas, so the first published package using any future manifest key would have bricked the entire Agents browser (and install/update paths) on every older Engine. New parseCapabilityCatalogWithCompat parses the envelope, validates entries individually, and drops+logs entries this Engine can't understand — pinned by a new lifecycle-regression case. Publishing note: an assets-declaring package should still wait until 1.10 Engines are widely installed, since only Engines with this PR have tolerant catalog parsing.

Install hardening (review-found): duplicate-file detection is now case-folded — on NTFS/APFS, Tiles.PNG + tiles.png extract onto one file and the losing declaration's hash could never verify; such manifests are now rejected at install.

Client (CapabilityElement.tsx): every capability element now receives capabilityProps.packageId and capabilityProps.packageVersion, giving packages a supported way to build the version-pinned URL (previously the documented immutable path was unreachable without re-fetching /installed or scraping import.meta.url).

Docs + release notes: docs/development/optional-agent-packages.md gains the Capability API 1.10 section; CHANGELOG.md gains entries for 1.10 assets and (previously missed) the #5082 caching change.

Regressions: the cache/serving lane now covers declared nested image + JSON serving (content types, ETag, immutable-when-pinned), undeclared/secret files staying 404, manifest.json refusal, dot-segment behavior at both the HTTP layer (framework collapses to the declared path) and the resolver layer (direct unit calls return null), the 1.10 gate (v2-with-old-API and v1 manifests rejected), SVG rejection, and unpinned-path rejection. The lifecycle lane covers the mixed-generation catalog and the 1.10 version pins.

Validation

  • pnpm check
  • pnpm regression:capability-cache
  • capability-package-lifecycle + capability-client-version-refresh regressions
  • pnpm regression:docs
  • pnpm version:check (no version fields touched)
  • Manually verify a home-browser-tab package's icons still render and hierarchical-maps still installs/serves after the schema change.
  • Manually verify a dev-installed package declaring contributions.assets serves its files and shows them cached immutable on a ?v=-pinned request.

Known considerations, deliberately out of scope: the serve path buffers whole files (pre-existing primitive shared with icons; per-file size is already capped by files[].bytes); the installed-registry parse is still all-or-nothing on Engine downgrade (same tolerant-parse pattern could apply later); internal helper names (verifyBrowserTabAsset) keep their old names to keep this diff reviewable.

Docs note: the docs/development/optional-agent-packages.md edit needs a docs-i18n mirror — intended to be batched with the pending round-8 catch-up.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for serving package-owned image and JSON assets through Capability API 1.10.
    • Added verified, manifest-declared asset paths with restricted content types and protection against undeclared or unsafe files.
    • Added immutable, version-pinned caching and ETags, including 304 Not Modified responses for unchanged assets.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Catalogs now omit incompatible entries individually instead of rejecting the entire catalog.
  • Documentation
    • Documented package-owned static asset configuration and usage.

…et delivery (Capability API 1.10, Pasta-Devs#5091)

Packages could serve at most 2 images (home-browser-tab icons). A manifest
may now declare contributions.assets.paths (≤256 image/JSON files, no
active document types), served over /:id/assets/* through the unchanged
verification chain: containment, files[] hash membership, passive
content-type allowlist, TOCTOU re-verification. With Pasta-Devs#5082, ?v=-pinned
requests cache immutable — a shipped tileset costs one download/version.

Review-hardened before submission:
- BLOCKER: catalog parsing was all-or-nothing over strict schemas — one
published package with any future manifest key would brick the whole
Agents browser on older Engines. parseCapabilityCatalogWithCompat now
validates entries individually and drops+logs unparseable ones.
- contributions.assets is gated on schemaVersion 2 + capabilityApi ≥1.10
  (versioned message instead of a cryptic strict-schema error);
  supportedCapabilityApi bumps to {1,10}.
- Declared-path normalization is throw-safe (one weird manifest path must
not 500 the whole asset surface); on-disk integrity failures still
throw loudly per the lifecycle regression's pinned posture.
- iconPaths ⊆ files[] now enforced whether or not the home-browser-tab
slot is declared; manifest.json explicitly unservable; case-folded
duplicate detection at install (NTFS/APFS collisions).
- CapabilityElement passes packageId/packageVersion in capabilityProps so
packages can build the pinned URL without scraping import.meta.url.
- CHANGELOG entries for 1.10 assets and the previously-missed Pasta-Devs#5082.

Regressions: serving (nested image+JSON, content types, secret-file 404,
manifest.json refusal, dot-segments at HTTP and resolver layers, 1.10
gate, svg + unpinned rejection) and lifecycle (mixed-generation catalog,
1.10 pins).

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 2a7b9

The PR adds version-pinned package asset delivery, but the current implementation can cache changed same-version bytes for up to a year and serve bytes that were not rechecked against their declared hash after a file race, allowing stale or integrity-violating assets to reach users. Merge should wait for both behaviors to be corrected.

892-897: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Return the verified bytes instead of the file path.

verifyBrowserTabAsset reads the whole file to hash it on a cold verification, and capability-packages.routes.ts Line 131 then reads the same file again to send it. That was two reads of at most two small icons. With contributions.assets.paths the same route now serves up to 256 declared files, and files[].bytes permits 100 MB each, so a cold request for a large tileset loads the file into memory twice.

Return the buffer from the verification step and let the route send it. That also removes a window where the bytes on disk change between verification and the route's own read.

CodeRabbit review applied in 2a7b9e5 (all seven inline comments answered on their threads). The outside-diff performance note is also addressed: cold verification now returns the exact bytes it hashed and both serve routes send those instead of re-reading — halving IO for large assets and closing the verify→send tamper window — while warm stat-validated hits keep the no-read fast path. The lifecycle regression pins both halves (cold returns the hashed bytes; warm returns data: null and performs no hash). Full pnpm check plus the capability, docs, and version lanes are green on the merged branch.

Do not mark version-only asset URLs as immutable.

The client route permits same-version republishing with different bytes. A cached ?v=<version> asset response will not revalidate, so it can serve stale art or JSON for up to one year. The URL does not contain the manifest hash.

Verify the bytes that the route sends on every request.

Line 520 returns data: null after metadata validation only. The asset route then reads file separately. A write after this stat() can cause the route to send bytes that were never checked against declaration.sha256.

Read and hash the bytes in verifyPackageAsset on cache hits, then return those verified bytes. Do not let the route perform an unverified fallback read.

…very served body

Second CodeRabbit review on Pasta-Devs#5092, both findings valid:

- ?v= immutable was unsafe: assertNotDowngrade refuses only LOWER versions,
so republishing the same version with different bytes is permitted, and
the URL carries no content digest — a cached immutable response could
serve stale art for a year. Assets now always revalidate (no-cache +
manifest-hash ETag → 304 with no body when unchanged), matching the
  client bundle's posture. ?v= remains a cache-key convenience only.
- The warm stat-validated fast path let the route send bytes that were
never hashed (write between verification stat and the route's own read).
packageAsset now serves through readVerifiedInstalledPackageFile — every
body is read, hashed, and returned from the same realpath+lstat chain
the client entrypoint uses (also erasing the chain asymmetry noted in
the first review) — and the stat-fingerprint cache, now purposeless, is
deleted (~60 lines). 304 revalidation means bodies are rarely sent, so
  per-request hashing costs little.

Docs and CHANGELOG updated to the revalidation contract; regressions pin
always-revalidate for any ?v= value, served-bytes identity, per-serve
hashing (cumulative hash counts updated), and repeat-call determinism.

Both findings from the second review (4944662325) were valid — applied in 15ee1f2:

Immutable asset caching removed. Confirmed against install policy: assertNotDowngrade refuses only lower versions, so republishing the same version with different bytes is permitted — which makes a version-only URL non-content-addressed, exactly as flagged. Assets now always revalidate (no-cache + manifest-hash ETag → 304 with no body when unchanged), matching the client bundle's posture; ?v= remains a cache-key convenience only. This also supersedes the ?v=-immutable behavior that #5087 introduced for the (then 2-icon) asset route; docs, CHANGELOG, and the cache regression now pin always-revalidate for any ?v= value.

Every served body is now hash-verified. packageAsset serves through readVerifiedInstalledPackageFile — read, hashed, and returned on every request through the same realpath+lstat chain the client entrypoint uses (this also erases the verification-chain asymmetry noted in the first review). The stat-fingerprint fast path — whose skipped read was the unverified-bytes window — became purposeless and is deleted (~60 lines net). With 304s answering unchanged revalidations before any body is sent, per-request hashing is cheap in practice. The lifecycle regression's cache-reuse assertions were rewritten to pin the new invariant: every served body is hashed, repeat calls are deterministic, and tamper/metadata changes still throw loudly.

Full pnpm check + capability/docs/version lanes green on the branch.

…ets (Capability API 1.10)

Deterministic build-time art generator (dependency-free PNG encoder): a
21-tile atlas with shading/edge detail and 4-direction x 4-frame authored
walk-cycle sheets for the player and each villager. Ships as package files
through the just-merged contributions.assets (Pasta-Devs#5091/Pasta-Devs#5092), loaded at
runtime via the packageId/packageVersion capabilityProps; every draw
resolves Tier1 ?? Tier0 so a failed load leaves the game fully playable on
procedural art. Manifest: 0.2.0, capabilityApi {1,10}.

Live-verified on the rebuilt engine: assets serve with ETag + no-cache
revalidation, loader reaches ready, the renderer provably draws the atlas
slice, and all four authored walk frames draw. Path gotcha fixed en route:
manifest asset paths are package-root-relative — the serve route already
namespaces them under /assets/.
