Refs SUPER-2637 (chat lag when scrolling and typing in Chat v3).

Problem

TranscriptRowItem is memoized, but its comparator checked snapshot by identity. useChatSession replaces the snapshot once per animation frame while an agent streams, so every mounted row re-rendered on every streamed frame, even when nothing it shows had changed.

Rows stay mounted once seen (useTranscriptWindow only grows, and useNearRows keeps seen rows rendered). After a reader scrolls through a long chat, a stream therefore re-renders hundreds of rows per frame. That starves the main thread, which is the "typing and scrolling lag" in the report.

Change

TurnGroupSection now reads the snapshot only through rowSnapshotView(row, snapshot). It returns the harness, the live text of the row's items (or of each tool-run step), and, for approval rows, the resolved asker and target. The row memo compares the previous and next views (sameRowSnapshot), so the comparator cannot drift from what the row renders.

Nested components that need the live snapshot already read it from NestedItemsProvider, which this change does not touch.

Measurements

These come from a synthetic benchmark, not the running app. It renders the real Transcript (happy-dom, React Profiler and DevTools-hook render counts) with a generated chat: each turn is a user message, reasoning, 3 tools and a markdown reply with a code fence. It then applies 60 text deltas to the streaming reply through the real reduceMany. Two samples each:

Scenario Row renders / frame React commit ms / frame Wall ms / frame
150 turns, at bottom: before 30 4.4 / 5.2 25 / 30
150 turns, at bottom: after 1 5.0 / 3.0 26 / 21
150 turns, scrolled through: before 750 18.0 / 18.4 86 / 91
150 turns, scrolled through: after 1 7.6 / 14.6 55 / 62
300 turns, scrolled through: before 1500 35.2 / 35.5 172 / 173
300 turns, scrolled through: after 1 11.1 / 13.4 101 / 115

The remaining cost when scrolled through is reconciling every mounted MessageScroller.Item about 5 times per frame. The window never shrinks; that is tracked as the next fix on the investigation page.

Validation

  • bun test sameRowSnapshot: new unit test, 5 pass
  • bun test src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace: 1205 pass, 0 fail
  • Benchmark rerun after the review refactor: still 1 row render per frame (7.1 ms React at 150 turns, 11.5 ms at 300)
  • bunx tsc --noEmit in apps/desktop: clean
  • biome check on the changed folder: clean
  • Not verified end-to-end in the desktop app. The numbers above are synthetic.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Chat transcripts now reflect changes to the relevant message text and tool reasoning without being affected by unrelated row updates.
    • Approval rows now update when the related tool call changes, and transcript rows reflect changes to the session harness.
    • Reply and tool-run rows display the text associated with their respective transcript entries.

TranscriptRowItem compared the session snapshot by identity. The snapshot
is replaced on every streamed frame, so each mounted row re-rendered once
per frame even when nothing it shows changed. A reader who had scrolled
through a long chat kept every row mounted, so a stream re-rendered
hundreds of rows per frame and starved typing and scrolling.

Rows now compare only what TurnGroupSection reads from the snapshot: the
harness, the live text of their own items, and the items map for approval
rows.

Synthetic benchmark (real Transcript, happy-dom, 60 text deltas):
- 150 turns, scrolled through: 750 -> 1 row renders per frame,
React commit time 18 ms -> 8-15 ms per frame
- 300 turns, scrolled through: 1500 -> 1 row renders per frame,
React commit time 35 ms -> 11-13 ms per frame

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change adds row-specific views of session snapshots for transcript rendering and comparison. TurnGroupSection uses the views for text and approval data. The row comparator uses row-aware snapshot comparison while retaining identity comparison for other properties.

Changes: Transcript row snapshots

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and use row snapshot views
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../Transcript/utils/rowSnapshotView/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../TurnGroupSection/TurnGroupSection.tsx
rowSnapshotView returns the harness, display text, and approval data for each row kind. TurnGroupSection uses those values when rendering item, tool-run, and reply-footer rows.
Compare snapshots for transcript rows
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../TranscriptRowItem/utils/sameRowSnapshot/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/.../TranscriptRowItem/TranscriptRowItem.tsx
sameRowSnapshot compares row-specific harness, approval references, and text. Tests cover streaming updates, approval completion, and harness changes. sameRow uses this helper for snapshots and retains Object.is for other properties.

Explanation

The title "fix(desktop): stop every chat row re-rendering on each streamed token" follows conventional commit format and matches the main change. The PR changes the TranscriptRowItem memo comparator to use sameRowSnapshot, which compares only the snapshot values each row reads, so unrelated rows no longer re-render on each streamed frame. The title names the scope, the bug, and the trigger.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the problem (every mounted TranscriptRowItem re-renders on each streamed frame because the memo comparator checks snapshot identity), the change (TurnGroupSection reads through rowSnapshotView and the row memo compares views via sameRowSnapshot), measurements from a synthetic benchmark, and validation steps. It does not fill the template's checklist, and it does not show a screenshot or before/after capture for the user-visible lag, but the template asks for screenshots only as strongly preferred for user-visible changes. It also does not state whether the PR title follows conventional commits or whether lint and typecheck were run with bun run lint and bun run typecheck, though typecheck and Biome were reported. The 'What & why' section does not explicitly link an issue number, though it references SUPER-2637 as a ticket reference.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 16.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 7 files.

Verdict: looks good. sameRowSnapshot matches every snapshot read in TurnGroupSection (harness, the row's own displayText, and the items map for approval rows). A probe on the real TranscriptRowItem.compare with 303 rows and 60 streamed deltas showed 303 → 2 re-renders per frame.

Findings (none blocking):

  • Minor, sameRowSnapshot.ts:18: the hand-written mirror of what TurnGroupSection reads can go stale without a signal. A follow-up could pass the snapshot-derived values (harness, text/stepTexts, asker, approvalTarget) as props and drop snapshot from TurnGroupSectionProps.
  • Nit, sameRowSnapshot.ts:26-31: approval rows re-render on any change to the items map identity. This is fine for now; compare the resolved asker and target if it ever shows up in a profile.
  • Nit, sameRowSnapshot.test.ts:67-72: the approval test checks only map identity, not a change to a looked-up item.

Not verified end to end: the desktop app boots at the PR head, but the sandbox has no project and no agent credentials to stream a long chat. CI is green. The v2-workspace suite passes locally (1203 pass), and typecheck is clean.

TurnGroupSection now reads the snapshot only through rowSnapshotView, and
the row memo compares two views. The comparator can no longer drift from
what the row renders, and approval rows compare their resolved asker and
target instead of the items map identity.
