fix(db): run local migrations through neon-proxy - #8940
On a fresh clone, ./.superset/setup.local.sh cannot apply migrations, so the dev account seed then fails with relation "auth.users" does not exist.
The cause: setup ran drizzle-kit migrate against the local Docker Postgres. The repo installs no TCP Postgres driver (pg or postgres), so drizzle-kit falls back to @neondatabase/serverless. That driver dials wss://localhost/v2 on port 443 and gets ECONNREFUSED on the first statement.
This PR adds bun run db:migrate:local, which applies the migrations with drizzle-orm's neon-serverless migrator through the local neon-proxy. It reuses configureLocalProxy() from the db client. setup.local.sh now calls it. The script refuses any DATABASE_URL that is not the local proxy (db.localtest.me), so it cannot touch a Neon database.
db:migrate and the preview and production deploy workflows still run drizzle-kit migrate against Neon, unchanged.
Set the proxy up in drizzle.config.ts. This does not work. The config loads the CommonJS build of @neondatabase/serverless, and drizzle-kit imports the ESM build, so they do not share neonConfig.
docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md already recommends the neon-serverless migrator for the same reason.
Fixes the driver half of #8252. The Postgres 17 vs migration 0122 half is separate and already has PRs (#7803, #7848, #7899).
How I tested it
On macOS arm64 with Docker, in a fresh workspace:
Before, on main:./.superset/setup.local.sh fails:
Using '@neondatabase/serverless' driver for database querying
DrizzleQueryError: Failed query: CREATE SCHEMA IF NOT EXISTS "drizzle"
_url: 'wss://localhost/v2'
AggregateError [ECONNREFUSED]
✗ db:migrate failed
NeonDbError: relation "auth.users" does not exist
✗ db:seed-dev failed
After, with this PR: I also applied #7848's compose change locally (Postgres 18, not part of this PR), ran ./.superset/teardown.local.sh, then ran ./.superset/setup.local.sh again:
📜 Applying database migrations...
Local database is migrated
✓ Migrations applied
✓ Dev account ready (sign in via the dev button)
All steps completed successfully!
drizzle.__drizzle_migrations has 167 rows, the same as _journal.json. The newest created_at equals the last journal entry's when.
DATABASE_URL=postgres://u:p@example.neon.tech/db bun run --cwd packages/db migrate:local exits 1 with DATABASE_URL is not the local proxy.
bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass.
I did not run this fix on Postgres 17 by itself. There it would get past the connection error, then stop at migration 0122 (#7803).

Summary by CodeRabbit
Developer Experience
Added a dedicated command for migrating the local Docker database through the local proxy, with clear success and failure reporting.
Updated development setup instructions to use the local migration command.
The command checks that the database connection is configured for the local proxy and directs developers to the standard migration command otherwise.
Local proxy validation now rejects malformed or overridden connection details, helping prevent migrations from running against an unintended database.
setup.local.sh ran `drizzle-kit migrate` against the local Docker
Postgres. No TCP Postgres driver is installed, so drizzle-kit falls back
to @neondatabase/serverless, which dials wss://localhost/v2 and gets
ECONNREFUSED. Migrations never applied on a fresh setup, and the dev
account seed then failed with `relation "auth.users" does not exist`.
Add `db:migrate:local`, which applies the migrations with drizzle-orm's
neon-serverless migrator through the local neon-proxy, reusing
configureLocalProxy() from the db client. It refuses any DATABASE_URL
that is not the local proxy. `db:migrate` and the deploy workflows still
use drizzle-kit against Neon, unchanged.
Setting the proxy up in drizzle.config.ts would not work: the config
loads the CommonJS build of @neondatabase/serverless and drizzle-kit
imports the ESM build, so they do not share neonConfig. Adding `pg`
would work locally, but drizzle-kit prefers it, so it would also move
preview and production migrations onto a new driver.
Fixes the driver half of ParadevAI#8252. The Postgres 17 vs migration 0122 half
is separate (ParadevAI#7803, ParadevAI#7848, ParadevAI#7899).

Walkthrough
The local migration command validates the database URL and runs Drizzle migrations through Neon’s serverless driver. The local setup script and development instructions invoke the new command.

Summary
Validate the proxy and run migrations packages/db/src/local-proxy.ts, packages/db/src/local-proxy.test.ts, packages/db/src/migrate-local.ts
The proxy check verifies the URL hostname and Neon’s resolved connection host. The migration script rejects non-local URLs, runs migrations through a Neon serverless pool, closes the pool, and reports the result.
Wire the local migration command packages/db/package.json, package.json, DEVELOPMENT.md, .superset/setup.local.sh
Package scripts expose the migration script. Development instructions and the local setup command use db:migrate:local. Setup comments state that migrations, seeding, and the app query through the neon-proxy.

Summary
Adds bun run db:migrate:local to apply local migrations through neon-proxy.
Local setup applies database migrations through neon-proxy.
No actionable issues were found. No runtime tests were run during this review.
Acknowledgment: kenil-kanani explicitly deferred the Postgres 17 failure at migration 0122 to separate PRs. This change addresses the connection-driver problem only.

isLocalProxy compared only the WHATWG URL hostname. The Neon driver
parses the connection string differently, so a URL could pass the check
and still connect to another host, with secure websockets turned off by
configureLocalProxy():
- a `?host=` query parameter overrides the hostname
- a backslash in the authority: the driver parses as http:, where `\`
ends the host, so `postgres://remote\@db.localtest.me/` goes to `remote`
- `socket://db.localtest.me/...` connects to a Unix socket path
isLocalProxy now also requires the host that the driver itself resolves
(`new Client(...).host`) to be the local proxy host. Building a Client
opens no connection. Remote URLs fail the hostname check first, so
production never builds one.
Reported by CodeRabbit on ParadevAI#8940 (the `?host=` case).
