Summary

  • Turn on Stripe tax ID collection in Checkout. Business buyers can now enter their legal business name and VAT (or other tax) ID, and both show on every subscription invoice.
  • Stop org renames from overwriting the Stripe customer name once the customer has a legal business name.

Why / Context

A customer asked to upgrade to Pro but needs invoices with their company name, address and VAT number. Checkout already requires a billing address, but there was no field for a business name or tax ID.

How It Works

  • getCheckoutSessionParams adds tax_id_collection: { enabled: true }. The tax ID stays optional (Stripe's default required: "never"), so individual buyers see only an unchecked "I'm purchasing as a business" box.

  • For an existing customer, Stripe requires customer_update.name: "auto" when tax IDs are collected. The better-auth plugin only sets address: "auto" for org customers, so we set { name: "auto", address: "auto" }. Our params are applied after the plugin's, so ours win. We only send it when the org has a customer ID, because Stripe rejects customer_update without one.

  • Checkout saves the business name to customer.name and customer.business_name, and the tax ID to customer.tax_ids (Stripe docs).

  • Org renames sync the name to customer.name from two places: afterUpdateOrganization and the organization.update tRPC procedure. Both now call one syncCustomerName helper in packages/auth/src/stripe.ts, which skips the sync when the customer has a business_name or any tax ID. The tax ID check covers names set through the billing portal, which may not set business_name.

  • customer_update.name: "auto" also applies when the buyer leaves the business box unchecked, so Checkout replaces the customer name with the cardholder name. onSubscriptionComplete now calls syncCustomerName to put the org name back, with the same business name / tax ID guard.

Manual QA Checklist

superset-home ran these end to end in Stripe test mode at 635bf4a2 (real Checkout pages, test clocks for renewals). All pass. Report: https://app.superset.sh/page/pr-8452-review-stripe-checkout-vat-id-gyk651

  • Upgrade checkout shows "I'm purchasing as a business". Enter a business name and DE123456789, then pay.
  • The Stripe customer has name and business_name set to the business name, and the tax ID is saved.
  • The first invoice shows the business name, billing address and VAT ID.
  • Settings → Billing shows the tax ID and name (not covered by the test run).
  • Renaming the org does not change the Stripe customer name.
  • Checkout without the business box checked works as before, and a rename still syncs the name to Stripe.

Testing

  • biome check packages/auth/src/server.ts: clean.
  • bun run typecheck in packages/auth: no errors in the changed lines. It reports 2 errors elsewhere in the file, at server.ts:426 (api-key plugin) and server.ts:1740 (signJWT). Both come from two copies of @better-auth/core@1.6.22 in my local install, not from this change.

Known Limitations

  • For a buyer who skips the business fields, the first invoice says "Bill to: " instead of the org name. Stripe finalizes it during Checkout, before onSubscriptionComplete runs. Renewals use the org name again.
  • This change does not compute or charge tax. We don't use Stripe Tax, so no VAT is added and nothing is reverse-charged. The VAT ID only appears on the invoice.
  • Customers who already pay can't add a VAT ID through this change. For them, turn on editing of tax IDs, billing address and name in the Customer portal settings in the Stripe Dashboard.
  • Each org rename now calls the Stripe API once more (one customer retrieve).

Summary by cubic

Enables optional tax ID collection at Stripe checkout so business buyers can add their legal business name and VAT (or other tax) ID, which appear on invoices. Stops org renames from overwriting the Stripe customer name once a business name is set, and restores the org name when a checkout skips the business fields.

Bug Fixes

  • Both org rename paths now use one syncCustomerName helper that skips the sync when the customer has a business name or tax ID, so names set through the billing portal are kept.
  • On subscription complete, syncCustomerName restores the org name that customer_update.name: "auto" replaced with the cardholder name for non-business buyers.
  • Skips tax ID collection entirely for existing customers who already have a tax ID, since Stripe hides the form but still overwrites their company name.

Known Limitations

  • Doesn't compute or charge tax; Stripe Tax isn't used, so the VAT ID only appears on the invoice.
  • Existing customers can't add a VAT ID through this change; enable tax ID editing in the Customer portal settings instead.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Checkout requests tax ID information when a customer doesn’t already have one. When applicable, Stripe can also update the customer’s name and address automatically.
  • Improvements
    • Eligible organization name changes are synchronized with Stripe, while existing business names and customers with tax IDs are preserved.
    • After eligible non-enterprise subscriptions complete, customer names are synchronized with Stripe. Synchronization errors are logged without interrupting the remaining processing.

Turn on Stripe tax ID collection in Checkout so business buyers can put
their legal name and VAT number on invoices. Org renames no longer
overwrite the Stripe customer name once a business name is set.

📝 Walkthrough

Organization update paths now use syncCustomerName to check Stripe customer details before changing a customer name. Checkout enables tax ID collection and, for organizations with a Stripe customer ID, automatic customer name and address updates. Non-enterprise subscription completion also attempts to synchronize the customer name.

Re-review at 76ac04ef: looks good. The cardholder-name finding from my last review is fixed. All four re-test cases pass end to end in Stripe test mode (real Checkout pages, card 4242):

  1. Individual buyer: name goes Acme Org → Jane Doe (Checkout) → Acme Org (restore). Next invoice preview shows Acme Org. The first invoice still says Jane Doe, as documented.
  2. Business buyer Acme GmbH + DE123456789: name, business_name and tax ID survive the restore and a rename.
  3. Customer that already has a tax ID: no tax_id_collection, plugin sends {address:"auto"}, and the name stays Acme GmbH.
  4. Rename skips business/tax-ID customers and still syncs individual ones. Also, Stripe saves the tax ID about 4 s before checkout.session.completed, so the guard sees it.

Nits (optional)

  • packages/auth/src/server.ts:758: every org edit now costs 2 Stripe reads + 1 write. Skip the write in syncCustomerName when customer.name === name.
  • packages/auth/src/server.ts:1224: an uncaught listTaxIds error fails the upgrade. .catch(() => false) would fall back to collecting tax IDs.
  • packages/auth/src/stripe.ts:11: a name someone sets in the portal without a tax ID is still replaced by the org name. That's the old behavior, so maybe add one line about it to the PR.

CI is green at 76ac04ef. bun run typecheck passes in packages/auth and packages/trpc.

organization.update also synced the org name to Stripe. Share one
syncCustomerName helper and skip the sync when the customer has a
business name or a tax ID, so names set in the portal are kept too.

Reduce the extra Stripe call on every organization update.

syncCustomerName makes two Stripe API calls (customer retrieve and tax ID list) on every call. The afterUpdateOrganization hook in packages/auth/src/server.ts calls it for every organization update, not only renames. Add a cheap pre-check in the hook, for example a name comparison, or pass the previous name. This avoids needless Stripe calls and rate-limit pressure.

customer_update.name "auto" is required for tax ID collection on an
existing customer, but it also replaces the customer name with the
cardholder name when the buyer skips the business fields. Put the org
name back on subscription complete unless a business name or tax ID
was given.

@superset-home please re-test end to end in Stripe test mode at 635bf4a203. It adds a name restore in onSubscriptionComplete for the cardholder-name finding.

  1. Checkout with the business box unchecked: after the subscription completes, the customer name is back to the org name. The first invoice is expected to show the cardholder name, and the next invoice should show the org name.
  2. Checkout with business name + DE123456789: the business name and tax ID stay on the customer after completion (the restore must not overwrite them).
  3. Customer that already has a tax ID from the portal, then checks out: the company name is not replaced by the cardholder name after completion.
  4. Org rename from desktop settings (organization.update) and through better-auth for a customer with a business name: the name is not changed.

Stripe hides the tax ID form for customers with a saved tax ID, but
customer_update.name "auto" still replaced their company name with the
cardholder name, and the restore skipped them because of the tax ID.

@superset-home update: please test at 76ac04ef4d instead. It also skips tax_id_collection and customer_update.name when the customer already has a tax ID, which is case 3 above.

Conflicts:
- packages/auth/src/server.ts: kept this branch's moved Stripe hooks and
ported #8452 (tax ID collection at checkout, customer name restore) into
the Stripe-mode checkout, the Autumn checkout routes, the shim, and
notifySubscriptionStarted. Autumn always checks out an existing Stripe
customer, so its checkout always sends customer_update (verified in the
Autumn sandbox: without it Stripe rejects tax ID collection).
- packages/db/drizzle: main took 0146-0150; the boots migration is
regenerated as 0151_cloud_workspace_boots with identical SQL.

Also in this merge:
- fix(cloud-workspace): metering only runs when BILLING_PROVIDER=autumn.
Before, Stripe mode still asked Autumn before every boot, and with no
subscribers imported it would refuse boxes for every organization.
- test: pin BILLING_PROVIDER=stripe in the trpc and api test preloads so a
local .env in Autumn mode does not change results.
