fix(chat): retain composer drafts until submission is accepted - #8400
An asynchronous send can clear text and attachments before the callback accepts the message. Repeated submission can also send the same pending draft twice.
I clear only the accepted submission snapshot. Rejection or upload/send failure retains it. A delayed success preserves later text, pasted cards, chips, files and history edits. Draft receipts follow their storage key across unmount/remount, and later edits or newer submissions invalidate old receipts. An in-flight guard also covers reentrant callbacks.
The reconciliation retains upstream dictation, pasted-card rendering and hidden MCP context. Provider execution and retry policy are unchanged.
How I tested it
Real Lexical, draft-storage and desktop submit-handler tests cover rejection, acceptance, newer edits, duplicate/reentrant submission, A→B→A edits, history navigation, remount and storage failures.
Existing recordings exercise the actual composer with a controlled callback: pending/rejection/acceptance, edits while pending, history navigation. These are component demonstrations, not authenticated provider runs. The recorded behavior is unchanged by the upstream reconciliation.
Final local checks are recorded for the published head; hosted CI remains required.
Allow edits from maintainers is enabled.
Every commit author has signed the CLA.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Draft text and attachments are preserved when a message is declined, sending fails, or attachment uploads fail.
After an accepted submission, the composer clears only submitted content, preserving edits made while it was in progress.
Duplicate submissions are prevented while a message is being sent.
Drafts remain available across composer closures and navigation when a submission is declined or fails.
Pasted content is retained during pending submissions and cleared only when the accepted submission is unchanged.
The send button shows a busy state while a message is being sent.
Subagent steering requests are prevented from triggering a follow-up prompt if the subagent is stopped while the request is pending.
Review follow-up — October 25, 2026
Focused v1 child steering now returns on acknowledgement. Cancellation, account changes and child closure cannot send stale work.
Scoped tests, types and lint pass on this exact head. The combined workspace run retains one unchanged upstream shell descriptor assertion failure. Verification, screenshots and finding dispositions. Hosted CI authorization and maintainer review remain separate.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The prompt composer now awaits submission results and preserves drafts when a send is declined or fails. Accepted submissions clear only unchanged content and submitted attachments. The desktop composer delegates message construction and sending to a utility. Subagent steering now checks cancellation state and handles protocol v1 steering outcomes.

### Issue 1
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/ChatSession/components/Composer/hooks/useComposerDraft/useComposerDraft.ts:118-119
`beginSubmission` can clear a saved draft that the editor keeps. While a send is pending, a loaded plugin catalog can replace plain text with chips without changing the text. This raises `draftRevision`, so `ComposerBody` preserves the revised draft. But the storage receipt still matches and deletes its saved text before that check runs. Closing and reopening the chat then loses the draft shown in the composer.
Use the same change signal for both clearing decisions.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
The PR waits for send acceptance before clearing the composer.
The composer clears submitted content only after the send is accepted.
Saved drafts follow the submitted text across navigation and remounts.

Fixed in 6d1ded07. Persisted clearing and the editor now share the same flushed content-revision receipt, so a late chip edit cannot be cleared just because its serialized text matches. The real Lexical regression “a late plugin chip stays saved when a send is accepted after close” failed before the fix and passes after it; the focused desktop and chat-ui suites pass (29 and 23 tests).
Use the same flushed Lexical content revision for editor and stored draft acceptance. A late plugin catalog can hydrate chips without changing serialized text; closing before acceptance must retain that revised draft. Keep selection-only updates and older submit callers compatible.
Pushed 6d1ded07. The review threads now contain fix/test evidence or a reason for retaining the current behavior. Exact-branch checks pass: 30 focused tests, changed-module lint, all 17 strict locale compilations and the catalog semantic audit.
Combined qualification and source identity: 16,101 tests passed, zero failed; full lint and 40 typecheck tasks passed. Matching Turbo cache results are disclosed there. The independent watcher-test repair is #8501, separate from this feature stack. Hosted CI still requires maintainer approval; these are local results, not approval or deployment. Running user apps and chats were untouched.

Keep the per-draft in-flight token until the original send settles, independently of draft cleanup receipt invalidation. Decline duplicate sends before uploading or sending. Preserve newer drafts. Regressions cover remounts and chip hydration, edits and recovery, key switches, and retry after rejection.
Fixed in 28bb0dd6ddbbfb2b297c065c45a2890efcbf17fa. The send guard now belongs to the draft key rather than the mounted composer. A second send is declined before upload/send while the first is pending; edits or recovered text cannot release that guard. The original settlement releases it on acceptance, decline or error.
The regression reproduced two sends after a real PromptInput unmount/remount on the previous head. With the fix: 34 Composer tests and 23 chat-ui tests pass, including chip hydration, key changes and retry after failure. Desktop/chat-ui typechecks and scoped lint pass.
Final combined qualification:16,106 tests passed, zero failed; full lint, all40 typecheck tasks and all17 strict locale compilations passed. Matching cache results and coverage limits are disclosed. Source identity matches the published verification snapshot. Hosted workflows still require maintainer approval.

Route v1 focused-subagent steers through _session/steering.
Composer now waits for submitMessage, and the focused-subagent callback awaits steerSubagent. steerSubagent currently awaits session/prompt, which stays pending for the full ACP turn. A Claude v1 steer can therefore be accepted and stream while the Composer remains blocked, preventing another steer.
Use _session/steering for negotiated v1 sessions that advertise steering. Return success for injected and startedNewTurn. Fall back to session/prompt for promptRequired, which preserves idle sends. Keep the existing session/prompt path for v2 and providers without the steering capability.

Reject steering after disposal.
If dispose() occurs while _session/steering is pending and returns promptRequired, the second guard can still pass because it omits this.disposed. session/prompt then rejects on the closed client instead of steerSubagent() returning false.
Share both guards and include the lifecycle checks:
if (outcome !== "promptRequired") return false;
- if (- this.client !== client ||- this.subagents.get(subagentSessionId) !== run ||- run.cancelGeneration !== cancelGeneration ||- run.item.canSteer !== true- )+ if (!this.steerIsCurrent(client, subagentSessionId, run, cancelGeneration))
return false;
