What & why

Closes #8250. Revives #4684 and #1185, which were closed into tracker #5608.

When you run agents across several projects at once, it's hard to tell at a glance which project you're in. This PR lets you give a project a color and tints everything that belongs to it, Peacock-style. It builds on the existing host-service project.color (#6249), so there's no new storage or migration. It supersedes the local-store approach in #4980.

  • Pick a color:

    • The v2 sidebar project context menu gets a Color submenu: Default, the 12 swatches, and Custom…, which opens the native color picker.
    • Project Settings gets a visible Color row with a custom swatch. Before, the color was only reachable inside the Icon popover.
    • Both call the existing project.setColor.
  • Workspace chrome: ProjectAccentProvider wraps the v2 workspace route and sets four CSS variables that @superset/panes now reads:

    • --panes-tab-bar-tint
    • --panes-active-tab-accent (a 2px stripe on the active tab)
    • --panes-pane-header-tint
    • --panes-surface-tint (workspace surface, active tab, presets bar)

When the variables are unset, panes renders exactly as before, so the package stays project-agnostic.

  • Terminal: useTerminalAppearance blends the color into theme.background. Alpha-compositing at a equals mixing at a, so the surface tint lands on exactly the terminal's background with no seams. The terminal pane's p-2 gutter now uses the terminal background too. OSC 10/11 replies follow the tinted theme.

  • Sidebar: each colored project and its workspaces get a soft background block (no border), spaced so neighboring groups never touch.

  • Settings: a new Appearance section, Project colors in workspaces:

    • a master toggle;
    • per-surface toggles for Sidebar, Tab bar, Pane headers and Background;
    • an intensity slider (0–100, default 40).

These are stored in v2UserPreferences and healed on read. The section is v2-only in settings search.

  • Cleanup: ProjectThumbnail uses the shared hexToRgba/isHexColor.

  • i18n: 16 new strings, translated for every shipped locale using each catalog's existing terms.

How I tested it

Everything below ran in the dev app (bun run dev:desktop + CDP) using real clicks and keys, with computed-style and pixel measurements alongside the screenshots.

Before: no project colors before
Right-click project → Color (with Custom…) menu
Red project: sidebar group, tab bar, active-tab stripe, pane header, surface and terminal red
Switch to a Blue project's workspace blue
Appearance → Project colors appearance
Project Settings → Color project settings
  • Seams: sampled pixels of the active tab, presets bar and terminal match within ±1 (≈ rgb(24, 26, 34) for Blue). Tab bar and pane header match each other.
  • Blend math: the default theme #151110 becomes rgb(38, 21, 20) with Red at the default intensity, an exact 8% blend.
  • Lifecycle: Red → Blue → back to Red re-tints the existing terminal after remount. Reloading the renderer heals a stored preference row from an older shape.
  • Settings: the toggles and slider apply live. Turning the master toggle off removes every variable. Color → Default clears the tint.
  • Sidebar spacing: groups are 6px apart with no box-shadow.
  • Custom…: a real click opens the native picker. Committing a color from the macOS color panel was tested by hand in the dev app, and it tints the sidebar, tabs and terminal as expected.
  • Console: console.error was hooked during the flows and stayed empty.

Automated:

  • New tests: renderer/lib/project-accent/project-accent.test.ts has 13 tests covering the color math, per-surface and intensity resolution, the surface/terminal match, the sidebar tint and theme tinting. schema.test.ts gains 2 tests for healing the new preference.
  • bun run lint and bun run check:i18n: clean.
  • packages/panes: typecheck and tests (121) pass.
  • apps/desktop bun run test: 7892 pass and 34 fail. The same 34 real-git and shell-env tests fail on an untouched main checkout on this machine.
  • apps/desktop bun run typecheck: reports the same better-auth type errors (packages/trpc, packages/auth) as untouched main here, and none in changed files.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too). Lint passes. Typecheck shows only pre-existing local errors identical to main, see above.
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs

Known limitation: a glyph icon picked in the Icon popover is baked with the color at that time. Changing the color later from the sidebar or the new Color row doesn't re-bake it, same as today's project settings outside the popover session.

Out of scope: the v1 sidebar/workspace and session workspaces (no project).

- Add a Color submenu to the v2 sidebar project context menu, backed by
  the existing host-service project.setColor
- Tint the tab bar, active tab, pane headers and terminal background of
a v2 workspace with its project's color via panes CSS variables and a
  ProjectAccentProvider around the workspace route
- Add Appearance > Project colors settings: master toggle, per-surface
toggles and an intensity slider, stored in v2 user preferences
- Paint the terminal pane padding with the terminal background so the
  tint has no untinted frame
- Share hexToRgba/isHexColor with ProjectThumbnail
- Translate the new strings for every shipped locale

Co-Authored-By: AI Assistant <noreply@example.com>
- Tint the workspace surface, active tab and presets bar to match the
terminal blend so no untinted strips remain; unify chrome tint alpha
- Tint each colored project's group in the sidebar (background only,
spaced so neighbouring groups never touch), with a Sidebar toggle
- Replace the Terminal toggle with Background (workspace + terminal)
- Add a visible Color row to project settings
- Add a native color picker: "Custom…" in the sidebar Color submenu
and a custom swatch in project settings
- Show the whole Color submenu without scrolling

Co-Authored-By: AI Assistant <noreply@example.com>
- Keep healV2UserPreferences' doc comment on its own function
- Render the hidden custom color input after the context menu so the
collapsed sidebar's first-child spacing is unaffected
- Find project colors in settings search by "sidebar"

Co-Authored-By: AI Assistant <noreply@example.com>
Cap the Color row's picker width so its fourteen swatches wrap into two
rows instead of squeezing the label column.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support #8250. They add project color controls, v2 workspace and terminal tinting, sidebar tinting, Appearance preferences, panes integration, tests, and translations. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR implements the main coding requirements in #8250, including color selection, Project Settings, v2 workspace and terminal tinting, sidebar tinting, Appearance controls, preference healing, and tests. One requirement remains unmet. TabBar and PaneHeader always set explicit color-mix(...) backgrounds. These styles apply when the accent variables are unset, so the panes package does not preserve the prior unset-variable rendering as required by #8250.

Resolution

Preserve the existing tab-bar and pane-header background behavior when the related accent variables are unset. Apply the replacement background only when its accent variable is active, or provide evidence that the unset state is visually and behaviorally identical to the previous implementation.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 11.76% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 34 functions across 36 files. (17 skipped: 17 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

[Medium risk] Adds project color tinting to workspace UI and terminal.

The PR appears safe to merge, with two non-blocking issues in surface switches and v1 settings visibility.

Findings

  1. P2 Disabled surfaces still show tint ▶
  2. P2 V1 shows ineffective color controls ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
packages/panes/src/react/components/Workspace/Workspace.tsx:109-111
Turning off Tab bar or Pane headers leaves them colored while Background stays on. `Workspace` paints the background tint beneath both surfaces, and their partly transparent fills let it show through. Enabling both layers also adds extra tint.

Give these surfaces an opaque base, or keep the workspace background tint out from underneath them so each switch controls its own surface.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

### Issue 2
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/appearance/components/AppearanceSettings/AppearanceSettings.tsx:59-62
The new v2-only `ProjectAccentSection` also appears in v1 Appearance settings. `AppearanceSettingsPage` passes `null` without a search and uses unfiltered matches with a search. `isItemVisible` never checks the active version.

These controls do nothing for v1 workspaces, and their instructions point to a color menu only added to v2. Use `getVisibleItemsForSection` with the active version before showing the section.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Adds project colors to v2 workspace chrome, terminals, and sidebar groups.

  • Adds preset and custom color choices in the sidebar and project settings.
  • Stores per-surface switches and intensity in existing user preferences.
  • Adds shared panes CSS variables, translations, and color-math tests.
  • Two non-blocking issues remain: background tint leaks into disabled surfaces, and v1 shows ineffective color controls.
  • MagnusPladsen acknowledged that changing a project's color does not recolor an already-baked glyph icon; this is a known limitation.

- Give the tab bar and pane headers opaque bases (same color-mix as
  WindowChrome) so the workspace surface tint never shows through them;
each toggle now controls only its own surface, with no stacked tint
- Show the Project colors section only for v2 users
- Refetch the targeted host project after a Color row change, like the
  other project settings fields
- Polish de/tr/vi translations of the new strings

Resolve the V2ProjectSettings conflict from ParadevAI#8319 by moving the Color
row into the new V2ProjectSettingsBody, wired to onHostProjectChanged.
Regenerate the i18n catalogs so entry order stays deterministic.

@Kitenite @AviPeltz this is ready for review whenever you have a moment. It builds on the host-service project.color and replaces the local-store approach in #4980. Happy to adjust scope or defaults.

MagnusPladsen and others added 2 commits October 20, 2026 13:39
- Keep projectAccentSettingsSchema beside sidebarProjectHostFilterSchema
- Pass projectColor, onSetColor and kind to both sidebar project menus
- Nest the Color submenu inside hasCheckout; cloud-repo has no checkout
- Keep "Tint…" and "Tinted" strings, recompile i18n catalogs

Co-Authored-By: AI Assistant <noreply@example.com>
- Drop "Times use your time zone." from the catalogs, removed upstream
- Keep the project color "Tint…" strings next to it in all 17 locales
- Recompile i18n catalogs: 6419 messages, 0 missing per locale
