What

Adds a chat:session-changed message to the host-service /events WebSocket bus, so a client that watches many chat-v3 sessions across hosts (Roster) can react to a push instead of polling chat.listSessions on each host.

Event shape

interface ChatSessionChangedMessage {
  type: "chat:session-changed";
  sessionId: string;
  workspaceId: string; // the session's scopeId
  status: SessionStatus; // from @superset/chat/protocol, the value listSessions stores
  live: boolean; // false once the session is closed, same meaning as getSession's `live`
  occurredAt: number;
}

live is one field more than the original sketch. Closing a session does not change its stored status: listSessions keeps returning the last status (for example idle, or running if a turn was cut off). Without live, the close event would look the same as the event before it.

When it fires

LiveSessionRegistry gets an optional onSessionChanged hook, which createChatRuntime passes through. Every session event a live session writes to its journal goes through the registry's publish wrapper, so the hook sees each status change:

  • Created: the first session event (starting) from LiveSession.start.
  • Status changed: any session event whose status differs from the last one reported for that session. Session events that keep the same status (title, mode, queue-pause updates) do not fire. Item and delta events never fire.
  • Closed: LiveSessionRegistry.dispose (called by closeSession) fires the last status with live: false, even if adapter teardown throws. A session event that arrives after close is ignored.

disposeAll (host shutdown) does not fire. The host wires the hook to EventBus.broadcastChatSessionChanged in app.ts. The chat-v3 mount is now created after the EventBus.

Compatibility with released clients

The only /events consumer is packages/workspace-client/src/lib/eventBus.ts (desktop renderer, mobile). Its handleMessage parses the JSON and calls only listeners where entry.type === message.type. A message type that has no registered listener goes through the loop and nothing happens. The only special case is type === "error". This dispatch has been in place since #3224 (April 2026), so released clients ignore chat:session-changed. Nothing on the client side subscribes to it in this PR.

Not included

  • setModel: setModelInputSchema exists in the protocol, but the runtime has no setModel command and HarnessAdapter has no method for it. Wiring it means changing every adapter, so it is left out.

Testing

  • packages/chat-runtime: bun test --isolate: 179 pass, 0 fail. New tests in registry.test.ts, using the fake harness:
    • one turn reports starting -> running -> idle with live: true, then idle with live: false on close
    • a second idle session event (title change) is not reported again
  • packages/host-service: bun test --isolate src/events/event-bus.test.ts src/chat-v3: 26 pass, 0 fail. The new test bridges a test runtime to EventBus and checks the exact message a socket receives when a session is created.
  • bunx biome check on the 10 changed files: clean.
  • bun run typecheck in host-service and workspace-client both fail with 22 errors, all in ../auth and ../trpc (better-auth plugin types). Plain origin/main fails with the same 22 errors in this checkout, and no errors are in the changed files. chat-runtime typecheck passes.

Summary by cubic

Emits chat:session-changed messages on the host /events WebSocket bus so clients watching chat-v3 sessions across hosts can react to pushes instead of polling chat.listSessions.

Details

  • Fires on session creation, each status change, and close; skips session events that keep the same status, and item/delta events never fire.
  • live is false on close, since closing a session does not change the status listSessions stores.
  • Host shutdown does not fire the event.
  • Released clients ignore the new message type, since /events dispatch only reaches registered listeners and none subscribe to it.
  • setModel wiring is out of scope: the runtime has no setModel command and no adapter method for it.

Written for commit 11167f6. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Chat session changes are now broadcast in real time, including the session’s workspace, status, and whether it is still active.
    • Notifications cover session creation, status changes, and closure. Repeated updates that leave the status unchanged are not sent.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 11167

A failed session-change notification can disrupt chat session creation or obscure a shutdown failure. Isolate callback errors before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 11167

The new notifications use the existing host authentication boundary, and no new privilege escalation was established. Risk remains low, but notification failures can affect session lifecycle operations, and failed creation can leave subscribers with an inaccurate live-session notification.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: The new observer crosses the core lifecycle failure boundary. A throwing callback during initial reporting rejects creation; a callback throwing from disposal's finally block can replace a teardown failure. In addition, synchronous adapter-start failure occurs after starting/live=true has been reported, but rollback removes registry and journal state without a compensating terminal notification. This weakens failure containment and externally visible rollback consistency. Ordinary socket-send errors are caught, and no attacker-triggered production exception was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is metadata for chat sessions across one host, delivered automatically to every admitted /events client. The inspected flow does not forward message contents or credentials. Cross-host aggregation is stated intent, but its deployed consumer and further inheritance were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The new push flow increases automatic visibility but does not demonstrate bypass of the existing host authorization boundary: the same admission checks protect both notifications and queries capable of returning host-wide session metadata. Workspace isolation was not newly removed by this PR. Concrete provider behavior and deployed identity topology remain outside completed coverage.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Per-socket send failures are caught before fan-out continues, but subsequent dead-client cleanup and the runtime observer lack an overall exception boundary. This establishes callback-to-lifecycle failure coupling, not a verified malicious-client trigger.
  • inferred — Registry report ownership is keyed only by sessionId. If a trusted caller recreates the same ID during pending disposal, the old disposal can delete the replacement's report and emit a false close. The inspected host creation command instead mints fresh UUIDs, so this is a bounded public-API invariant limitation rather than an established remote attack path.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define notification callbacks as failure-isolated observers, preserve original lifecycle errors, and provide a terminal or invalidation notification when creation rolls back after an initial live report. If same-ID registry reuse is supported, bind reporting and cleanup to the specific session instance or generation.

[Medium risk] Adds chat session lifecycle events to the event bus.

The PR appears safe to merge, with non-blocking notification reliability issues worth addressing.

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
packages/chat-runtime/src/sessions/registry/registry.ts:89
A session reports `starting` before `adapter.start()` runs. If the adapter throws synchronously, this path removes the report and discards the session without sending a correction. Clients can receive a notification for a session that never successfully existed.

### Issue 2
packages/chat-runtime/src/sessions/registry/registry.ts:133
If a supplied `onSessionChanged` callback throws, its exception escapes the session publication path. During creation, that rolls back an otherwise valid session; during a later status update, it can interrupt the live session. A notification failure should not affect chat processing.

Summary

The PR forwards chat-v3 session creation, status changes, and closure from the runtime through the host-service events bus.

  • Adds a status-deduplicating runtime callback and a typed chat:session-changed message.
  • Adds runtime and event-bus tests. The creation-failure and callback-failure paths still need attention.

P2 Notification callback can interrupt sessions If a supplied onSessionChanged callback throws, its exception escapes the session publication path. During creation, that rolls back an otherwise valid session; during a later status update, it can interrupt the live session. A notification failure should not affect chat processing.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Isolate failures from onSessionChanged.

If the callback throws on the initial starting report, create() treats the callback failure as a start failure. It removes the live session and fails session creation. The callback at Line 115 can also replace an adapter disposal error. Catch and log callback errors at both call sites so an optional observer cannot change session lifecycle results.
