Summary

Fixes #6315. Remote-host commands sent API keys as bearer JWTs, so the relay rejected unattended CLI callers. Exported CDP URLs also expired after the CLI exited.

What changed

  • Exchange supported API keys through /api/auth/token and refresh expiring JWTs for remote requests. Preserve OAuth and local-host authentication.
  • Export remote API-key CDP URLs through a detached loopback proxy that refreshes credentials on connection. Reuse the proxy for the same credentials and target.
  • Add browser cdp-stop --id with confirmed shutdown. Keep upstream credentials in memory and protect local access with separate CDP and management capabilities.
  • Bound startup, buffering and idle lifetime. Cancel pending authentication and close transports on shutdown.
  • Warn about the secret URL on stderr while preserving parsable stdout. Recover stale proxy records only after verified process absence or definite connection refusal; authenticate unknown endpoints before stopping them.

Verification

  • All 396 CLI tests and all 26 monorepo test tasks passed, with 25 unchanged package tasks cached.
  • Twenty-four focused runtime tests passed across compiled, development and source launchers. These cover CLI exit, delayed connection, JWT renewal on reconnect, authentication rejection, concurrent reuse, stale-record recovery and worker shutdown.
  • CLI build, lint, all 42 typecheck tasks, plugin checks and i18n checks passed.

Deployment notes

Uses the existing token endpoint; no server deployment or migration is required. The exported proxy URL works on the CLI machine; another machine needs deliberate forwarding. The proxy exits after 24 hours without active connections and can be stopped without the original API key. Stopping it or restarting the machine requires a new export. Local-host and OAuth endpoints retain their existing lifetime.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Remote browser CDP connections authenticated with API keys now use a local proxy that refreshes credentials, allowing connections to continue as remote tokens expire.
    • Remote host requests and WebSocket connections refresh API-key credentials as needed.
    • Matching proxy sessions can be reused. Proxies listen only on the local machine and stop after 24 hours without an active connection.
    • Added superset browser cdp-stop to stop a proxy and disconnect its clients. CDP command output may include proxy details, including an ID for stopping it.
  • Documentation

    • Updated browser and CLI reference documentation with proxy behavior, output details, and stop-command usage.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Remote host API keys are exchanged for host tokens. The browser CDP command now uses a local proxy for remote API-key connections. The proxy refreshes tokens, supports reuse and explicit shutdown, and stores proxy manifests in a local registry.

packages/cli/src/lib/host-target/exchangeApiKey.ts, packages/cli/src/lib/host-target/resolveHostTarget.ts, packages/cli/src/lib/host-target/resolveHostTarget.test.ts
API keys are exchanged for validated tokens with timeout and error handling. Remote HTTP and WebSocket access uses a token provider that caches tokens and shares concurrent exchanges. Tests cover refresh, passthrough, and exchange failures.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 710d9

The remote API-key CDP proxy now recovers from stale registrations and reports controlled errors when shutdown cannot be verified. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed changes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 710d9

Remote browser access now outlives the command and uses a reusable secret URL. Local-only access, separate management credentials, and confirmed shutdown limit exposure. Remote permission and revocation guarantees remain partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A holder of the exported capability can control the selected browser pane, including its logged-in session, while able to reach the loopback endpoint or an intentional forward. The retained upstream API key has a broader identity context than that pane; JWT claims include the authenticated user’s organization memberships. Maximum remote authority cannot be established without the downstream authorization contract.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The local boundary rejects requests with an Origin header or unexpected Host header. CDP access requires its own capability; health and shutdown require a distinct management capability, checked with timing-safe comparison. Knowing only the proxy identifier or CDP capability does not satisfy management authentication.
  • observed — The issuer enables API-key sessions and constructs JWT subject and organization claims from the authenticated user. Endpoint authentication is delegated to the authentication dependency. This supports the intended exchange pattern but does not independently prove API-key-specific permission preservation or immediate revocation of cached JWTs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Shutdown aborts pending authentication, clears queued frames and timers, terminates upstream transports, and forcibly stops the listener. Source-level regression cases cover stalled token exchange, an upstream that does not acknowledge close, and launcher loss before acknowledgement; these tests were inspected, not executed during this review.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish end-to-end contract coverage using the real issuer and remote authorization path for API-key owner identity, organization isolation, permission scope, and revocation timing. Explicitly distinguish cached JWT validity and established-session lifetime from API-key invalidation.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

[High risk] CLI authentication flow now exchanges API keys for session tokens.

The PR should not merge until remote-host credentials used by continuing calls and printed CDP URLs have an expiry strategy.

  2. P2 Body failures appear malformed ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
packages/cli/src/lib/host-target/resolveHostTarget.ts:96
For an API-key-authenticated remote host, this exchanges the key once and keeps the resulting one-hour JWT in both the HTTP client and the WebSocket token. The browser CDP command prints a URL containing that token for external tools. If a tool connects or reconnects after the hour, the relay rejects the URL even though the API key is still valid. The user must rerun the CLI command to get a working URL; continuing host calls also need a way to refresh their credential.

### Issue 2
packages/cli/src/lib/host-target/exchangeApiKey.ts:32-34
If the API sends successful headers but reading the token response body times out or fails, this catch turns the error into `null` and reports an invalid token response. The user gets a misleading diagnosis instead of the connectivity guidance given when the initial fetch fails. Distinguish body-read failures from a completed response with invalid JSON.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

The PR exchanges CLI API keys for relay-compatible JWTs when resolving remote hosts, uses those JWTs for HTTP and WebSocket access, and adds authentication and error-path tests.

  • Remote credentials now have a one-hour lifetime, which affects URLs handed to external CDP tools.
  • A body-read failure is reported as a malformed token response rather than a connectivity failure.
