What & why

Add 1×–5× pinch magnification and panning to browser and pages panes without changing document layout, CSS sizes, or the browser's normal zoom setting. Both use a shared gesture controller that transforms and clips the embedded surface; page comment highlights and pins follow the magnified coordinates.

Browser handlers reattach after navigation and survive parked panes. Pages opt in through the frame runtime, so this portion requires the updated usercontent service. This is surface magnification, not a change to the guest's native visualViewport.scale.

Pages pane at 1× and 2× (local fixture):

1× 2×
Before After

How I tested it

  • Compared with native pinch in a separate Chrome profile: magnification changes while CSS sizes and normal zoom remain unchanged.
  • CDP against this worktree's signed-in desktop (localhost:4785): 14 assertions cover unchanged layout/zoom, both-axis panning, repeated zoom reversals during 120 ms main-thread stalls, 1×/5× limits, ordinary scrolling, and no gesture console errors.
  • Four lifecycle assertions cover browser toolbar reload, retained browser magnification across a Pages/workspace route switch, and pages zoom after remount. Also verified comment highlights, selection toolbar, and draft-pin alignment through visible UI input; no comment was submitted.
  • Six zoom unit tests and 11 browser registry tests passed. Full repository lint, typecheck (40 tasks), and tests (23 tasks) passed.
  • Superset input checks used CDP Ctrl+wheel and wheel events. Physical trackpad input is still unverified. Pages used a local fixture because the development content bucket does not contain existing shared pages.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • bun run check:plugins passes
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs (not a fork)

Changes

Page pinch-zoom integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared viewport zoom runtime
packages/shared/package.json, packages/shared/src/page-zoom.ts, packages/shared/src/page-comments-runtime.ts, packages/shared/src/page-zoom.test.ts
The shared package adds viewport state, zoom limits, runtime scripts, compositor styling, frame messages, host opt-in handling, and tests for zoom behavior.
Comments viewport rendering
packages/ui/src/components/PageComments/components/PageCommentsView/PageCommentsView.tsx, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/PageViewer/PageViewer.tsx
PageCommentsView accepts pinch-zoom configuration, applies viewport updates, enables the frame runtime, and transforms hover, comment, and selection rectangles.
Desktop webview lifecycle wiring
apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/browser-viewport-zoom/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/BrowserPane/browserRuntimeRegistry.ts, apps/desktop/src/renderer/screens/main/components/WorkspaceView/ContentView/TabsContent/TabView/BrowserPane/hooks/usePersistentWebview/usePersistentWebview.ts
New webviews attach viewport zoom polling. Cleanup runs when panes detach or webviews are destroyed. The zoomFactor documentation reflects separate pinch magnification.

Pinching while page interaction is locked can unexpectedly change the browser’s native zoom, but the effect is localized and recoverable.

Electron 41 BrowserWindow WebContents unprevented Ctrl+wheel pinch zoom default setVisualZoomLevelLimits documentation

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In Electron, including version 41, the visual pinch-zoom behavior is disabled by default [1][2][3]. The webContents.setVisualZoomLevelLimits(minimumLevel, maximumLevel) API is used to explicitly configure or re-enable this behavior [1][4]. Key details regarding visual zoom and setVisualZoomLevelLimits: 1. Default Behavior: Visual zoom (pinch-to-zoom) is disabled by default [1][3]. You do not need to take action to disable it if you do not want it; however, if it has been enabled elsewhere in your application, you can explicitly restrict it by setting both the minimum and maximum levels to 1 [5][6]: js win.webContents.setVisualZoomLevelLimits(1, 1); 2. Enabling Visual Zoom: To allow pinch-to-zoom, you must provide a range greater than 1 [1][3]. For example, to allow zooming between 100% and 300%: js win.webContents.setVisualZoomLevelLimits(1, 3); 3. Scope and Distinctions: * Visual Zoom vs. Layout Zoom: setVisualZoomLevelLimits applies specifically to pinch-to-zoom [2][3]. It does not affect standard keyboard-based or menu-based zoom shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl+/-/0 or Cmd+/-/0), which modify the layout zoom level [2][3]. * Menu Controls: Layout zoom is controlled by the application menu&#39;s MenuItem roles (zoomIn, zoomOut, resetZoom) [2][3]. To disable these shortcuts, you must define your own menu and omit these roles [2][3]. * Implementation: webContents.setVisualZoomLevelLimits is available on the webContents object in the main process [1][7]. A similar method, webFrame.setVisualZoomLevelLimits, exists for use within the renderer process [2][3]. Documentation for these methods can be found in the official Electron API references for webContents and webFrame [1][2][3].

Electron 41 Ctrl+wheel WheelEvent ctrlKey page zoom visual zoom default behavior

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In Electron, the default behavior for Ctrl+Mouse Wheel (or Command+Mouse Wheel on macOS) is to perform page zooming (often referred to as layout zoom) [1]. This behavior is inherited from the underlying Chromium engine [1]. When this action occurs, a WheelEvent is dispatched in the web contents where the ctrlKey property is set to true [2][3]. This aligns with standard web behavior where Ctrl+Wheel is used for zooming [2][3]. Key technical details regarding this behavior in Electron: 1. Layout vs. Visual Zoom: Electron distinguishes between layout zoom (scaling the page content, which is the default for Ctrl+Wheel) and visual zoom (pinch-to-zoom). Visual zoom is disabled by default in Electron [4][5]. To enable visual zoom, you must explicitly call webContents.setVisualZoomLevelLimits(min, max) or webFrame.setVisualZoomLevelLimits(min, max) [4][5]. 2. Event Handling: When the user zooms using the mouse wheel, Electron emits a &#39;zoom-changed&#39; event on the webContents instance [6][7]. It is important to note that this event is specifically emitted for mouse wheel/trackpad zoom actions and is not triggered by other zoom methods, such as keyboard shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl+/-) or menu-based zoom roles [6][7]. 3. Disabling Default Behavior: Many Electron developers choose to disable unwanted default browser behaviors, including pinch-zoom, to provide a more native application experience [1]. This is typically managed by configuring the zoom limits or by overriding event listeners [1]. If you are developing an Electron application and need to intercept or customize this behavior, you can use the &#39;zoom-changed&#39; event for monitoring or call the appropriate setVisualZoomLevelLimits methods to control the zoom policy [4][5][6].

It is also fired for related devices that simulate wheel actions, such as trackpads and mouse balls. This event replaces the non-standard deprecated {{domxref("Element/mousewheel_event", "mousewheel")}} event. Don&`#39`;t confuse the `wheel` event with the {{domxref("Element/scroll_event", "scroll")}} event: - A `wheel` event doesn&`#39`;t necessarily dispatch a `scroll` event. For example, the element may be unscrollable at all. Zooming actions using the wheel or trackpad also fire `wheel` events (with {{domxref("MouseEvent/ctrlKey", "ctrlKey")}} set to true). - A `scroll` event isn&`#39`;t necessarily triggered by a `wheel` event. Elements can also be scrolled by using the keyboard, dragging a scrollbar, or using JavaScript. - Even when the `wheel` event does trigger scrolling, the `delta*` values in the `wheel` event don&`#39`;t necessarily reflect the content&`#39`;s scrolling direction. Therefore, do not rely on the `wheel` event&`#39`;s `delta*` properties to get the scrolling direction. Instead, detect value changes of {{domxref("Element.scrollLeft", "scrollLeft")}} and {{domxref("Element.scrollTop", "scrollTop")}} of the target in the `scroll` event. The `wheel` event is cancelable. In some browsers, only the first `wheel` event in a sequence is cancelable, and later events are non-cancelable. If the event is canceled, no scrolling or zooming is performed. This may cause performance issues as the browser has to wait for every wheel event to be processed before actually scrolling the content. You can avoid this by setting `passive: true` when calling {{domxref("EventTarget.addEventListener", "addEventListener()")}}, which may cause the browser to generate non-cancelable `wheel` events. ## Syntax Use the event name in methods like {{domxref("EventTarget.addEventListener", "addEventListener()")}}, or set an event handler property. ```js-nolint addEventListener("wheel", (event) => { }) onwheel = (event) => { } ``` ## Event type A {{domxref("WheelEvent")}}. Inherits from {{domxref("MouseEvent")}}, {{domxref("UIEvent")}} and {{domxref("Event")}}. {{InheritanceDiagram("WheelEvent")}} ## Examples ### Scaling an element via the wheel This example shows how to scale an element using the mouse (or other pointing device) wheel. ```html <div>Scale me with your mouse wheel.</div> ``` ```css body { min-height: 100vh; margin: 0; display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; } div { width: 105px; height: 105px; background: `#ccddff`; padding: 5px; } ``` ```js let scale = 1; const el = document.querySelector("div"); function zoom(event) { event.preventDefault(); scale += event.deltaY * -0.01; // Restrict scale scale = Math.min(Math.max(0.125, scale), 4); // Apply scale transform el.style.transform = `scale(${scale})`; } el.onwheel = zoom; ``` {{EmbedLiveSample("Scaling_an_element_via_the_wheel", 700, 300)}} ### addEventListener equivalent The event handler can also be set up using the {{domxref("EventTarget/addEventListener", "addEventListener()")}} method: ```js el.addEventListener("wheel", zoom, { passive: false }); ``` ## Specifications {{Specifications}} ## Browser compatibility {{Compat}} ## See also - {{domxref("WheelEvent")}} <title>Pinch and wheel difference across browsers · pmndrs/use-gesture · Discussion `#518` · GitHub</title> GitHub discussion 518 in pmndrs/use-gesture (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference) | First off, great library! In chrome both pinch and wheel gestures are called for ctrl+wheel and trackpad pinch inputs. In safari only the wheel gesture is called on ctrl+wheel, and only pinch on trackpad. Is this intentional and if so how do you suggest handling an action like zoom when it&`#39`;ll be called twice in chrome (pinch + wheel), but only once in safari (wheel for ctrl+wheel and pinch for trackpad pinch). | | --- | ... `@dbismut` It seems like v9 used to only send pinch events in Chrome on`ctrl+wheel` or trackpad pinch in Chrome https://codesandbox.io/s/react-use-gesture-issue-wheel-forked-pmlqou?file=/src/index.js ... | This is sort of intentional indeed. When using the trackpad in MacBooks or the Magic Trackpad, Safari is able to determine both zoom and rotation through vendor-specific`GestureEvents`. But when using those trackpads on Chrome, if you try to zoom, you&`#39`;ll actually trigger`WheelEvents` with the`ctrlKey` flag set to true. This is not the lib doing anything, this is just the way it is. However if you want to distinguish wheel from zoom, you can always check state.pinching inside your`onWheel` handler (or check if the`ctrlKey` is false). | | --- | ... ` So in Chrome handleZoom will get called twice, once in the wheel handler and once in the pinch handler for either a trackpad pinch or a`ctrl+wheel` action. However, in safari the pinch only gets called on the trackpad and the wheel only gets called on the`ctrl+wheel` so my app will zoom twice as far in chrome on a`ctrl+wheel` then it will in safari. Just trying to figure out if there is a way to handle this better, maybe some gesture option I&`#39`;m missing or something. Thanks again! | | --- | ... | Ok I get your issue. At the moment the lib detects whether`WebKitGestureEvents` are available and since React doesn&`#39`;t have a handler to them, the lib only uses them when you pass the`ref` option. So I guess one easy way to get to what you want is not using`ref`. That isn&`#39`;t super satisfactory though. One other option on your end would be to only use`onPinch` for mobile devices (which you can do by checking pointerType) and do the zoom logic in`onWheel` only (in that case you wouldn&`#39`;t benefit from the Magic Trackpad on Safari). One final option would be for the lib to still attach wheel listeners on Safari desktop (fairly easy to do). We could have a special option for that. | | --- | ... | And yes, to clarify: Magic trackpad zoom on Chrome / Firefox triggers the wheel event with the ctrlKey flag set to true. Magic trackpad zoom on Safari triggers a GestureEvent. usePinch listens to GestureEvents when it can (Safari with ref option), and falls back to TouchEvents / WheelEvents when it can&`#39`;t (when using`{...bind()}`, on Chrome / Firefox). | | --- | ... | Ohh ok, that makes sense thanks for the explanation! So in this case I could add a pinch option like`alwaysCapturePinchWheelEvents` or something like that so on a`ctrl+wheel` pinch would still be called? Then I could just handle all my zooming in the pinch handler. I could try to get a PR up for this since you are on vacation depending on exactly how you&`#39`;d want it done. | | --- | ... | bind(bindFunction: any) { | | --- | | const device = this.config.device | | if (!!device) { | | // `@ts-ignore` | | bindFunction(device, &`#39`;start&`#39`;, this[device + &`#39`;Start&`#39`;].bind(this)) | | // `@ts-ignore` | | bindFunction(device, &`#39`;change&`#39`;, this[device + &`#39`;Move&`#39`;].bind(this)) | | // `@ts-ignore` | | bindFunction(device, &`#39`;end&`#39`;, this[device + &`#39`;End&`#39`;].bind(this)) | | // `@ts-ignore` | | bindFunction(device, &`#39`;cancel&`#39`;, this[device + &`#39`;End&`#39`;].bind(this)) | | } else { | | // we try to set a passive listener, knowing that in any case React will | | // ignore it. | | bindFunction(&`#39`;wheel&`#39`;, &`#39`;&`#39`;, this.wheel.bind(this), { passive: false }) | | } | | } | ... | I gave it a second thought and you&`#39`;re right. Prevent native Ctrl-wheel zoom while pinch zoom is locked.

When isLocked() is true, PAGE_PINCH_ZOOM_RUNTIME_SOURCE returns before event.preventDefault(). Electron treats an unprevented Ctrl-wheel event as page zoom, and the before-input-event handlers do not intercept wheel input. Prevent Ctrl-wheel defaults before the locked-state return and update the locked-state test to expect prevention.

Ports what landed on main after this branch's last merge onto the consolidated
store: the selection lock and hidden resolved pins from #7470, and the pinch-zoom
rect transform and locked runtime from #7519. Each conflict kept main's feature
and this branch's behaviour rather than one side. Main's re-derivation of threads
on mobile was dropped, since the consolidated hook already supplies them.

Mobile's pick handler now sets selectionRef before opening compose, so two pick
messages in one tick cannot push the compose route twice.

…7427)

Collapses three near-identical page-comment stores (web, desktop, mobile) into
one @superset/cloud-client package. The provider carries the vanilla tRPC client
directly, typed against AppRouter with type-only imports, so the hooks call the
router proxy and inputs and outputs are inferred rather than hand-listed. Shared
types move to @superset/shared/page-comments, with one pageCommentUser derivation
replacing three per-app copies. Server shaping is extracted to
trpc/router/page-comment/shape.ts, and create/reply return the shaped row so the
client swaps its placeholder for the real row without a refetch.

Opens the comment composer the moment a block is selected, with the quick
actions on the card's top row; deletes the standalone SelectionToolbar on both
surfaces.

Merged over main's selection lock and hidden resolved pins (#7470) and the
pinch-zoom rect transform (#7519), keeping each feature and this branch's
behaviour. Verified locally: cloud-client, shared, ui, desktop and web typecheck
clean; 24 tests pass, including the isMutating settlement-race test.

…s own zoom (#8615)

Pinch zoom (#7519) clips and translates the <webview> with the guest's
innerWidth, innerHeight and scroll offsets. Those are page CSS pixels.
When the page zoom (Cmd +/-, stored per origin) differs from the app
zoom, they are not the element's pixels, so the clip covered only part
of the pane: below 100% page zoom the pinched page showed in the
top-left corner and the rest of the pane stayed blank.

applyPageViewportZoom now converts the viewport to the element's own
size (offsetWidth/offsetHeight, which transforms do not change) before
it computes the transform and clip.
