Summary

Clicking inside a browser pane's page content never activated/highlighted the pane — the hoisted <webview> lives outside the pane tree (kept fixed under <body> since #3346 so Electron never reparents/respawns the guest process across tab switches and splits), so the click never reached the pane's mousedown-based activation handler in Pane.tsx. The identical bug was fixed for PagePane's iframe three days earlier (#7257) but never extended to browser panes.

WebContents.on('focus') looked like the fix — Electron's documented signal for focus moving between WebContents in the same window — but doesn't actually fire for a <webview> guest. Confirmed live over CDP: wc.isFocused() stayed false immediately after a click that had already moved the host's document.activeElement onto the webview element.

Replaced it with the same no-preload technique the app's own design-mode feature already uses: inject a script that resolves a Promise on the guest's next mousedown, executeJavaScript awaits it, and the main process re-arms immediately after each resolution. Handles navigation gracefully — a torn-down document just re-arms into whatever's there now instead of giving up for the rest of the pane's life.

Also widened the header icon hit targets: split/close were 18×18px with only a 2px gap between them (tight enough to risk a misclick landing on the wrong icon) across PaneHeaderActions (shared by every pane kind), BrowserPaneToolbar's own icon row, and the overflow menu's zoom controls.

Test plan

  • bun run typecheck clean (apps/desktop, packages/panes)
  • CDP-verified live in the dev app: clicking inside a browser pane's page content flips its active-pane border, confirmed via the actual DOM class (not visual guess), toggled back and forth between panes twice
  • Navigation: the watch loop originally did not survive a real navigation (the awaited executeJavaScript is orphaned, never rejected) — caught by the full-surface sweep, fixed by re-arming on dom-ready with a generation counter; verified the hook is installed in the new document after example.com → example.org
  • URL suggestions were being painted over by the native webview on any loaded page (pre-existing, same class as fix(desktop): paint browser-pane overlays above the hoisted webview #7232) — now portalled into the pane overlay layer; sweep asserts the list's bottom row hit-tests to a suggestion, not the webview
  • Nine-surface CDP sweep on the post-navigation document, all passing: overflow menu, find bar, design mode, URL suggestions, session dropdown, connection popover, click-to-activate, narrow header audit @900px, close inactive pane
  • Narrow panes: min-w-[260px] was never generated (packages/panes not in Tailwind @source) — fixed; header is a named @container on the pane root with tiered collapsing; audited 1728→520px and with min-width forced off down to 67px: zero overlaps
  • Manually confirmed in a running dev build by the reporter

Summary by cubic

Fixes browser panes not activating when you click inside the page, makes pane header icons easier to hit without overlapping in narrow panes, moves Open DevTools into the overflow menu, and keeps URL suggestions visible above the page.

  • Clicks inside the <webview> guest never reach the pane's mousedown handler, and Electron's focus signal doesn't fire for <webview> guests, so the main process injects a mousedown-detection script that re-arms after each click and survives navigation.
  • Header icons get wider hit targets; pane headers clip title and extras and hide lower-priority items via container queries so nothing overlaps even when squeezed. The container hangs on the pane root so the header's popovers (URL-bar suggestions) still layer above pane banners.
  • Tailwind now scans packages/panes so the pane's 260px minimum actually generates.
  • URL suggestions were painted over by the hoisted webview; they now portal into the pane's overlay layer above the page.

Written for commit 217ffb7. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added an “Open DevTools” option to the browser pane overflow menu.
    • Browser panes now stay synchronized with focus inside embedded web pages.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved pane sizing and prevented header content from overflowing narrow panes.
    • Added responsive behavior that hides lower-priority controls when space is limited.
    • Ensured minimum pane widths are applied consistently.
  • Style

    • Updated spacing and padding across pane headers and controls for improved visual consistency.
    • Moved DevTools access from the browser toolbar to the overflow menu.

Clicking inside a browser pane's page content never activated/highlighted
the pane — the hoisted <webview> lives outside the pane tree, so the click
never reached the pane's mousedown-based activation handler. The same bug
was fixed for PagePane's iframe three days earlier but never extended to
browser panes.

WebContents.on('focus') looked like the fix but doesn't actually fire for
a <webview> guest (confirmed live: wc.isFocused() stayed false right after
a click that had already moved document.activeElement onto the webview).
Instead, reuse the no-preload technique design-mode already uses: inject a
script that resolves on the guest's next mousedown, executeJavaScript
awaits it, and it re-arms after each one.

Also widened the header icon hit targets (18x18 with a 2px gap was tight
enough to risk a misclick) across PaneHeaderActions, BrowserPaneToolbar,
and the overflow menu's zoom row.

Walkthrough

The change forwards browser guest focus events to the renderer, moves DevTools into the browser overflow menu, and adjusts pane header controls for narrow widths through container queries, spacing, clipping, and visibility rules.

Changes

Pane focus forwarding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guest focus detection and lifecycle
apps/desktop/src/main/lib/browser/browser-manager.ts
The browser manager detects guest mousedown events, emits pane focus events, retries after navigation failures, and removes listeners during pane cleanup.
Focus event subscription
apps/desktop/src/lib/trpc/routers/browser/browser.ts, apps/desktop/.../usePersistentWebview.ts
The browser router exposes onPaneFocus. The persistent webview focuses its pane when the subscription emits.

Pane header controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Header container and clipping
packages/panes/src/react/components/Workspace/.../PaneHeader/*, packages/panes/src/react/components/PaneHeaderActions/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/globals.css
Pane headers declare a container query context. Title and action areas clip overflowing content. Shared action spacing and padding increase.
Responsive pane controls
apps/desktop/.../BrowserPaneToolbar/*, apps/desktop/.../TerminalPane/*, apps/desktop/.../DiffPaneHeaderExtras/*
Header controls use container-query visibility, updated spacing, larger padding, and no longer use expanded HIT_SLOP targets.
Browser DevTools action
apps/desktop/.../BrowserOverflowMenu/*, apps/desktop/.../BrowserPaneToolbar/*
The overflow menu opens DevTools when a page exists. The separate toolbar action is removed.

Same 18x18-with-a-2px-gap pattern from the browser pane's header, found
in Terminal's header icons (rich input, copy ID menu, session handoff)
and the diff pane's two zero-gap 20x20 toggle buttons. Widened padding/
gaps to match; left the file pane and PR/comment pane extras alone,
they already use p-1/gap-1, and left FileViewToggle's segmented control
alone, it's a different (lower-risk, reversible) interaction pattern.

Widening padding/gaps directly (previous two commits) grew each button's
own box, which fed into the same width math the narrow-pane truncation
fix (#7404) depends on — overflowed exactly as reported.

Reverted every visual size back to its original value and added a
shared HIT_SLOP class (@superset/ui/utils) instead: an absolutely-
positioned pseudo-element extends the clickable area a few pixels past
the button's box in every direction. Out of flow, so it's invisible to
flex/grid sizing and overflow math regardless of icon size — the layout
sees the same tiny button it always did; only the hit-test area grew.

Bound retries after guest hook failures

NEXT_MOUSEDOWN_SCRIPT stores its resolver queue in window.__supersetMousedownHook. A guest page can replace it with a truthy value without resolvers.push, causing executeJavaScript() to reject on every injection. Because the catch immediately continues until the pane is unregistered, the loop repeatedly sends failing IPC work and can waste main-process CPU. Validate or isolate the hook state before retrying, and add bounded retries or backoff.

Run NEXT_MOUSEDOWN_SCRIPT in an isolated world. register() starts this loop for each live guest, and wc.executeJavaScript() runs in the page world. Page code can replace window.__supersetMousedownHook so the injected Promise rejects. The catch block then reinjects immediately without backoff or an attempt limit, creating a tight retry loop. Use executeJavaScriptInIsolatedWorld() with the same dedicated world ID for every arm so page code cannot replace the hook state.

The executeJavaScript awaiting a mousedown in the old document never
settles when the guest navigates — it is orphaned, not rejected — so
the watch loop parked on it forever and click-to-activate died after
the first navigation (caught by a full-surface sweep: the guest showed
no hook installed on the new page).

dom-ready now starts a fresh loop per document under a generation
counter; the stale loop exits at its next check and a late resolution
from it is dropped. Verified: after navigating example.com → example.org
the hook is installed in the new document, and the nine-surface header
sweep (overflow menu, find bar, design mode, URL suggestions, session
dropdown, connection popover, click-to-activate, narrow audit, close
inactive pane) passes.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01J4vs5B7c44DH3t7KeFkdHV
The suggestion list hung under the input as an absolute z-50 box inside
the header, and the hoisted native <webview> paints over the whole pane
tree — so on any loaded page the list was cut off where the page began.
Pre-existing (it reproduces with containment removed), but the banner
fix drew attention to the same spot. Same class as #7232, which moved
the find bar, composer and error state into the registry's overlay
layer and left this list out.

The list now portals into that overlay (the host layer mirroring the
page rect, above the webview), placed at the input's edges in the
layer's coordinates and re-measured while open; it falls back to the
in-place list until the pane's overlay is attached.

CDP: with "super" typed on a loaded page, elementFromPoint at the list's
bottom row resolves to a suggestion button (previously the webview), and
the nine-surface header sweep passes.
