chore(api): time-boxed tracing to measure the region move - #7388
Conversation
Moving the five Vercel apps to pdx1 put the functions in us-west-2 with Neon, and nothing has measured what that bought — tracing went off in #7273, so the before-numbers have no after. Three routes, each answering one question, sampled at ~81k spans/day — 0.4% of the ~19M/day that cost 115x quota in September. Every other route returns 0, and a sampler's return value overrides an inherited parent decision, so that 0 is authoritative in a way `tracesSampleRate: 0` was not. Before, from the last 30d of spans: route reads/req p50 txn p50 db desktop/version 1.00 72ms 66ms trpc GET 5.84 436ms 67ms gmail/push 11.17 3445ms 71ms desktop/version is the control: one query and nothing else, so its p50 is the round trip. If colocation worked it should land near 10ms. Revert once the numbers are in. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Ho5jMfrUs1e65svM8M2Hc6
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe Sentry server configuration now samples traces for three selected routes at different rates and disables sampling for all other routes. ChangesRoute-based trace sampling
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to This change enables route-based tracing for a regional performance measurement, but requests using unintended HTTP methods may be included in the sampled cohorts. That can skew results and consume more tracing quota than planned, so method-specific sampling should be addressed before merge. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 5✅ Passed checks (5 passed)

site:github.com/getsentry/sentry-javascript v10.68.0 Next.js tracesSampler SamplingContext transaction name HTTP method
💡 Result:
In Sentry JavaScript SDK v10.68.0, the tracesSampler function receives a SamplingContext that provides access to the incoming HTTP request and transaction details to facilitate dynamic sampling decisions [1][2]. Key updates in v10.68.0 include: 1. Request Data Accessibility: The SDK now explicitly forwards normalizedRequest (containing the HTTP method, URL, and headers) into the SamplingContext for root spans [1]. This allows developers to write custom sampling logic that targets specific HTTP methods, URL patterns, or health-check routes [1]. 2. Edge Runtime Support: While earlier versions faced issues where normalizedRequest was unavailable in Next.js Edge middleware root spans, v10.68.0 includes a fix (via #22232) that populates this request data using a beforeSampling hook in the Edge SDK [3]. This ensures the request data is available across both Node.js and Edge runtimes [4][3]. 3. Transaction Context: The SamplingContext typically includes a transactionContext, which provides the name of the transaction [5]. Developers can combine the name and the normalizedRequest object within their tracesSampler implementation to control sampling rates based on these properties [1][3]. Example usage in your Sentry configuration: tracesSampler: (samplingContext) => { const { normalizedRequest, transactionContext } = samplingContext; // Example: Ignore health check routes if (normalizedRequest?.url === '/api/health') { return 0; } // Example: Sample GET requests differently than POST if (normalizedRequest?.method === 'POST') { return 0.5; } return 1; // Default sampling rate } This implementation allows you to leverage the full context of the incoming request at the time of sampling [1].

site:docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/nextjs configuration tracesSampler normalizedRequest method
💡 Result:
In Sentry SDK configurations, normalizedRequest is a property available within the samplingContext object passed to the tracesSampler function [1]. It provides access to request information for the currently active HTTP server request, if applicable [1]. Key points regarding normalizedRequest and tracesSampler: 1. Usage: When defining a custom tracesSampler in Sentry.init, you can access normalizedRequest from the samplingContext argument to make dynamic sampling decisions based on incoming request data [2][1]. 2. Evolution: In recent SDK versions (such as the migration from v8 to v9), the samplingContext has been refined [3][4]. Specifically, the legacy request property has been removed in favor of normalizedRequest [3][4]. It is important to note that the type signature of normalizedRequest differs from the older request property [3][4]. 3. Purpose: The tracesSampler is a function responsible for determining the percentage chance (a value between 0 and 1) that a transaction will be captured and sent to Sentry [1]. By using normalizedRequest, you can implement conditional logic to sample or ignore specific requests based on their properties (e.g., headers, URL, or method) [2][1]. Example of accessing the context in a tracesSampler: Sentry.init({ tracesSampler: (samplingContext) => { const { normalizedRequest } = samplingContext; // Example: Use normalizedRequest to make a sampling decision if (normalizedRequest && normalizedRequest.method === 'OPTIONS') { return 0; // Do not sample OPTIONS requests } return 0.5; // Default sample rate }, });

🌐 Web query:
site:docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/nextjs "transaction name" "tracesSampler" Next.js
💡 Result:
In Next.js applications using Sentry, you can access the transaction name within the tracesSampler function by retrieving it from the samplingContext object [1][2]. The tracesSampler function accepts a samplingContext parameter, which includes a name property [1][3]. This name represents the transaction name as it was started, allowing you to implement conditional logic for sampling or filtering based on that name [1][2]. Example usage: // Sentry configuration (e.g., instrumentation.ts or instrumentation-client.js) Sentry.init({ //... other config tracesSampler: (samplingContext) => { const { name } = samplingContext; // Example: Skip specific transactions if (name.includes("healthcheck")) { return 0; // Drop the transaction } // Example: Increase sampling for critical paths if (name.includes("/checkout")) { return 1.0; // 100% sample rate } // Default fallback return 0.1; // 10% sample rate }, }); When the function returns 0, the transaction is effectively filtered out and will not be reported to Sentry [1][4]. For more complex filtering, you can also inspect the attributes property within the same context object to make decisions based on specific metadata [1][2].

Match normalizedRequest.method with each route.
The tRPC route accepts both GET and POST, but the sampler checks only name. Require GET for /api/desktop/version and /api/trpc/, and POST for /api/integrations/google/gmail/push.
