Why

The Models settings page asked users to sign in to Anthropic and OpenAI so that a small model could name new workspaces and branches. That design sends the user's prompt to an API we picked on their behalf. For privacy-sensitive users that is not acceptable: the prompt is the most sensitive thing they type, and consenting to run an agent is not consent to hand the same text to a second service.

Local naming now runs on the agent CLI the workspace already launches, using the credentials the user signed that CLI in with. When there is no agent context, or the CLI cannot run, names are derived from the prompt text on this machine. Nothing leaves the machine that the user has not already signed that agent in to. The small model and its provider sign-in go away entirely.

What was removed

  • packages/provider-auth — the whole package: Anthropic/OpenAI OAuth and API-key storage, the chat service, small-model resolution, title generation.
  • host-service — ChatService in app.ts and types.ts, the runtime.auth handle, the whole host.auth.* router, and its integration test.
  • desktop main — the chatService tRPC router and its registration.
  • desktop renderer — components/ProviderAuth/ (OAuth dialogs, hooks, IPC client), the Models settings page, its sidebar entry, command-palette command, settings-search items, and the "models" settings section.
  • onboarding — the provider connect step and its Claude Code / Codex rows. The flow still completes: step one is now the language row plus the GitHub CLI row, and Continue still advances to the project step. Connecting an agent during onboarding is not coming back, so the step's subtitle no longer promises it.
  • shared — src/shared/ai/provider-status.ts, whose only consumer was the Models page.
  • Dependencies that existed only for this chain: @superset/provider-auth, @mastra/core, and mastracode from the desktop and host-service manifests.

Naming after this change

Two tiers, both local:

  1. The launch agent's own headless CLI (claude --model haiku -p style), 20-second cap. Unchanged, and now the first attempt rather than a fallback.
  2. Names derived from the prompt: deriveWorkspaceTitleFromPrompt for the title, the 30-character branch slug for the branch.

The desktop v1 paths (ai-name.ts, ai-branch-name.ts) and the host-service generateBranchNameFromPrompt lose their model call and derive directly; they had no agent context to work with. Because the derived name is now the normal outcome rather than a degradation, the "model naming was unavailable" warning is gone, and the auto-name toast no longer offers to open a settings page that no longer exists. The toast still fires for the case that remains genuinely unnameable.

workspaces.aiRename has no UI caller and now derives rather than calling a model. Cloud workspace naming on the API is out of scope and untouched.

Persisted state

No schema change, and nothing needed a sweep. The settings-section store is not persisted. The renderer does restore its route history from localStorage, so a user who quit on /settings/models comes back to Not Found inside settings rather than the page. That is a deliberate call: it is rare, it does not crash, and a prefix list of dead routes is not worth maintaining to turn one Not Found into a different route. DEAD_KEYS is untouched because this feature persisted no keys of its own.

Verification

Check Result
bun run lint:fix clean, no fixes on the second pass
sherif no issues across 37 packages
host-service typecheck passes
desktop typecheck passes
host-service tests 1503 pass, 0 fail, 8 todo
desktop tests 3451 pass, 1 fail
bun run check:i18n 4931 messages, 0 missing in all 16 locales

The one desktop failure is LeaderboardRank, which this branch does not touch. It passes in isolation and fails only in the full run: packages/shared/src/constants.ts reads NEXT_PUBLIC_MARKETING_URL at module load, the repo root .env sets it to http://localhost:9522, and the test asserts the production URL. That is a pre-existing cross-file environment leak, not a regression here.

lingui extract --clean removed 35 orphaned message ids across every locale (the provider OAuth dialogs, the API-key rows, and the Models page copy). Catalogs are regenerated and committed.

Notes for review

  • plans/host-service-chat-architecture.md and the shipped plans under apps/desktop/plans/done/ still describe this chain. They are historical records, so I left them; say the word if you want the live architecture doc updated.
  • scripts/sandbox/image.ts keeps a runtimeResolutionOnly list that existed because the provider credential store pulled in mastra's storage stack. It is probably trimmable now, but that needs checking against a fresh bundle, so I only corrected the comment.

Do not merge yet: the replacement settings UI lives on a separate branch.

Summary by cubic

Workspace and branch naming previously sent prompts through Superset's Anthropic/OpenAI provider chain; names now come from the workspace's launch-agent CLI first, otherwise derived locally. The Models settings page and provider sign-in are gone, so prompts only reach services the user already connected their agent to. Cloud naming remains unchanged.

  • The CLI has a 20-second limit; local derivation stays offline and branch names deduplicate against existing branches.
  • Removes provider authentication, chat routes, the Models settings page, the onboarding provider step (onboarding now only covers language and GitHub CLI), and the @superset/provider-auth package.
  • Naming warnings now appear only when naming is skipped, and the fallback toast no longer links to removed settings.
  • Removes the Mastra/DuckDB/tokenizer/ONNX/libsql native-module packaging paths; build checks now validate the remaining @ast-grep/napi binding.
  • Persisted /settings/models history is not rewritten, so users with that saved route can still land on Not Found.

Written for commit 0efd45c. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Removed Features

    • Removed the Models settings section and Anthropic/OpenAI account connection flows, including OAuth and API-key management.
    • Onboarding now focuses exclusively on GitHub CLI setup.
    • Workspace auto-naming no longer relies on hosted model calls or model-auth settings.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Workspace branch names are generated locally and automatically deduplicated.
    • Auto-rename warnings now appear only when renaming is skipped or fails, avoiding misleading prompts.

Walkthrough

The change removes provider authentication services, UI, routes, settings, dependencies, and translations. Workspace naming now uses local prompt derivation with branch deduplication. Native packaging no longer handles the removed model dependencies.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d09f9

When agent CLI naming falls back to prompt derivation, created workspaces can receive branch names beyond the host-service limit. Apply the configured maximum before using the fallback branch name.

Follow-up commit 59abd7c: SupersetIcon was left stranded under onboarding/providers/, a route directory that this PR emptied, while its only consumer is NewWorkspaceScreen. Moved it there per the co-location rule and deleted the empty tree.

The destination is i18n-enforced and the SVG titles itself with the product name. That name never translates (packages/i18n/glossary.md), so the title is now a literal expression rather than a <Trans> catalog message. Say the word if you would rather the ratchet gained a real exemption for glossary terms instead.

Also added a line to enforced-dirs.ts recording why the Models entry is absent. That list is a ratchet that only grows, so an unexplained removal reads as a regression; here the directory itself was deleted.

Verified after the move: desktop typecheck clean, bun run lint:fix clean, the i18n hardcoded-string ratchet at 55 pass / 0 fail, and check:i18n still 4931 messages with 0 missing in all 16 locales and no catalog change. Desktop suite unchanged at 3451 pass with the same pre-existing LeaderboardRank environment failure described above.

Follow-up commit 58f2d80 removes the mastra native stack, and it turns out this was not optional.

This PR had a latent break. Deleting provider-auth took the last mastra dependency out of the lockfile, but the build wiring still demanded it. @mastra/duckdb was in the desktop requiredMaterializedNodeModules, and copy-native-modules.ts calls process.exit(1) on a required module it cannot materialize. So prebuild and prepackage would fail on any clean checkout. It passed on my machine only because a stale node_modules/.bun still held the package from before the removal. I reproduced the failure by moving those stale store entries aside:

[ERROR] @mastra/duckdb not found at .../apps/desktop/node_modules/@mastra/duckdb
error: script "copy:native-modules" exited with code 1

Removed: @mastra/duckdb, @duckdb/*, mastracode, onnxruntime-node and @anush008/tokenizers* from the desktop runtime dependencies plus its duckdb copy and validate steps, the host-service and CLI bundle externals, and the sandbox image resolution list. Also the unused @anush008/tokenizers-linux-arm64-gnu optional dependency on host-service.

Deliberately kept: the mastracode agent preset. That is a coding agent users install and launch themselves, not a dependency of ours, so its catalog entry, icons and agent-setup hook wrappers stay. The host-service bundle now contains 14 mastracode strings and 3 mastraHooksSpec references and zero @mastra or duckdb library code.

Verified against a store with no mastra present, which is what CI will see: copy:native-modules exits 0, host-service builds clean, desktop and host-service and CLI typecheck, host-service is 1503 pass / 0 fail, desktop is 3451 pass with the same pre-existing LeaderboardRank environment failure.

One thing I did not do. libsql is still declared by apps/desktop and referenced by the build scripts. It has zero imports anywhere in the source and reached us through @mastra/libsql, so it is dead weight by the same argument. I left it because removing it means gutting a substantial, deliberately written validation apparatus in validate-native-runtime.ts (the bundling guard at lines 50-89, the platform matrix, the presence check) for no build-correctness gain. Happy to do it as its own change if you want the packaged app slimmer.

Commit eb883fe removes libsql as well. It is fully removable — I checked before cutting rather than after.

Evidence it was dead:

  • No source file in the repository imports libsql, @libsql/* or @neon-rs.
  • Drizzle only ever uses the better-sqlite3, bun-sqlite, neon-http, neon-serverless, pg-core and sqlite-core drivers. Never the libsql one.
  • Zero occurrences in the built host-service.js and host-worker.js, in the desktop dist/main/index.js and its sourcemap, and in the bundled CLI binary.
  • After removing the desktop dependency it survives in the lockfile only as an optional-peer artifact of drizzle-orm, which nothing installs.

It reached the tree through @mastra/libsql, so it belonged to the same stack as the rest.

Removed: the desktop dependency, its externalized-runtime-module entry along with the @libsql and @neon-rs packaged copies and asar unpack globs, the libsql dependency-preparation step in copy-native-modules.ts, the bundling guard and platform matrix and presence check in validate-native-runtime.ts, the host-service and CLI bundle externals, the per-target @libsql platform bindings, and the sandbox image resolution entry.

A latent bug fell out of this. The platform libsql check had an early return for unsupported platforms, and that return also skipped the @ast-grep/napi validation sitting below it in the same function. Removing the libsql block means the ast-grep check now always runs. You can see it in the validation output below.

Verified with every libsql package moved out of the Bun store, which is what a clean checkout sees:

$ bun run copy:native-modules   -> exit 0
$ bun run compile:app            -> exit 0
$ bun run validate:native-runtime
[validate:native-runtime] OK: workspace packages are bundled into the main output
[validate:native-runtime] OK: main output only contains expected external requires
[validate:native-runtime] OK: @parcel/watcher is not bundled into the main output
[validate:native-runtime] OK: platform ast-grep package present (@ast-grep/napi-darwin-arm64)
[validate:native-runtime] OK: platform parcel watcher package present (@parcel/watcher-darwin-arm64)
[validate:native-runtime] All checks passed

host-service builds with zero libsql in the bundle. Desktop, host-service and CLI typecheck. sherif clean. host-service 1503 pass / 0 fail, desktop 3451 pass with the same pre-existing LeaderboardRank environment failure.

That is the whole mastra stack gone. The only thing still named mastra is the mastracode agent preset, which is a coding agent users launch themselves.

Commit fdeb11d: onboarding will not connect an agent at all, so the first step no longer says it does.

Nothing in the flow was still hooking up Claude after the provider step came out. Step one is a language picker and the GitHub CLI row, step two creates or adds a project. The only thing left claiming otherwise was the step subtitle, "Connect your agents and tools to get started", which is now "Connect the tools Superset needs to get started". I also removed the "a replacement step lands in a later PR" line from the description above, since that is no longer the plan.

Since the last comment I also built the CLI distribution for darwin-arm64 to exercise the build-dist.ts externals edit. It builds and packages, and the shipped lib/node_modules now contains only @parcel, @xterm, better-sqlite3, node-pty and their support packages. No libsql, @libsql, @neon-rs, @mastra, @duckdb, onnxruntime-node or @anush008.

Went through the bot findings. Two were valid and are fixed in 6523705, one was already handled, and one I am pushing back on.

Fixed — retired-path matching (cubic P2, also flagged by CodeRabbit). Correct and worth taking. A persisted history entry can carry a search string or a hash, so matching only the bare path and a trailing slash left /settings/models?tab=anthropic in the restored history and booted the renderer into Not Found, which is the exact failure the guard exists to prevent. The prefix now has to end on /, ? or #. That also keeps a sibling route like /settings/models-of-agents from being swept by accident, which the naive startsWith would not have done either. Four tests cover it: cursor sitting on a retired entry, an entry with a search string, an entry with a hash, a sibling sharing the prefix, and a history where every entry is retired.

Fixed — dead biome ratchet entry (cubic P3). The reasoning was slightly off, that file was not deleted by this PR, it went with the legacy mastra chat in #6461, but the conclusion is right: it is a dead path in a ratchet list, and it is mastra debris, so it belongs to this cleanup. Removed.

Already done — stale mastracode externalize entry (cubic P3). Fixed in e1cd2ab, which the bot had not seen. That commit removed the whole mastra native stack from the build wiring, mainExternalizedDependencies included.

Not taking — the naming success log (cubic P3, confidence 10). I disagree with this one. It fires once per workspace creation, which is a user-initiated and infrequent event, so it is not a hot path. More importantly, this exact log is the diagnostic that established which naming tier is actually doing the work; reading it across a real host is how we learned the agent CLI was naming everything and the small model never ran. Deleting the success line would leave only failures visible and make the same question unanswerable next time. I would rather keep knowing which tier named a workspace.

CI is green on the CLI builds for all four targets after the smoke-test fix, so the earlier failure is resolved.

Commit 9692df4 verified on both architectures, locally, because CI signing keeps failing before the check runs.

I packaged the app for each target and ran the guard against the real bundles:

  • arm64: @ast-grep/napi-darwin-arm64/ast-grep-napi.darwin-arm64.node present.
  • x64 (cross-built with TARGET_ARCH=x64): @ast-grep/napi-darwin-x64/ast-grep-napi.darwin-x64.node present, 6.9M.

The correction was necessary, not cosmetic. I checked what my first version would have done on the same x64 bundle, and it would have failed the build: the x64 app ships @parcel/watcher-darwin-arm64 and no watcher-darwin-x64. So pointing the guard at parcel watcher would have red every Intel release. @ast-grep ships both arch packages because copyAstGrepPlatformPackages resolves the TARGET_ARCH one and fetches it from npm when the Bun store has no match, which is the same guarantee DuckDB had and the reason it was a valid check target.

Neither x64 nor arm64 bundle contains any of the removed packages: no @mastra, @duckdb, libsql, @libsql, @neon-rs, onnxruntime-node, @anush008 or mastracode.

Note for whoever reviews: the canary runs I used to test this failed in macOS code signing (security set-key-partition-list), with the identical error and certificate hash as a canary from main at 00:50 today. That is pre-existing infrastructure flakiness, not this branch, and the failed build job means Update Canary Release was skipped, so the published canary was never replaced.

…ming uses the agent CLI

The Models settings page signed users into Anthropic and OpenAI so a small
model could name workspaces and branches. That sent the user's prompt to an
API we chose on their behalf, which privacy-sensitive users cannot accept.
Local naming now runs on the agent CLI the workspace already launches, with
the user's own credentials, and falls back to names derived from the prompt
text on this machine. Nothing leaves the machine that the user did not
already sign that agent in to.

Removed: packages/provider-auth, the host-service ChatService and its
host.auth.* router, the desktop chatService router, the ProviderAuth
renderer components, the Models settings page and its sidebar, command
palette, search and settings-section entries, the onboarding provider
connect step, and the shared provider-status helper.

Naming keeps two tiers: the launch agent's headless CLI first (20s cap),
then deriveWorkspaceTitleFromPrompt plus the 30-character branch slug.
Cloud workspace naming on the API is untouched.

A persisted router history entry for /settings/models would boot the
renderer into Not Found, so retired paths are dropped on load.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
Deleting the onboarding provider step emptied onboarding/providers/, which
was left holding one icon used by an unrelated modal. Co-locate it under
NewWorkspaceScreen, its only consumer, and drop the empty route directory.

The destination is an i18n-enforced directory and the SVG titles itself with
the product name, which never translates, so the title becomes a literal
rather than a catalog message.

Also note in enforced-dirs why the Models entry is absent: the directory was
deleted, not un-enforced.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
…build

Removing provider-auth took the last mastra dependency out of the lockfile,
but the build wiring still demanded it. `@mastra/duckdb` sat in the desktop's
requiredMaterializedNodeModules, and copy-native-modules exits 1 on a
required module it cannot materialize, so `prebuild` and `prepackage` fail on
any clean checkout. It passed locally only because a stale node_modules/.bun
still held the package.

Dropped @mastra/duckdb, @duckdb/*, mastracode, onnxruntime-node and
@anush008/tokenizers* from the desktop runtime dependencies, the desktop
duckdb copy and validate steps, the host-service and CLI bundle externals,
and the sandbox image resolution list. Also dropped the now-unused
@anush008/tokenizers-linux-arm64-gnu optional dependency.

The mastracode agent preset is untouched: that is a coding agent users launch
themselves, not a dependency of ours. The host-service bundle still carries
its id and hook wrappers, and nothing else.

Verified on a store with no mastra present: copy:native-modules exits 0,
host-service builds and its bundle contains no duckdb or @mastra code,
desktop/host-service/cli typecheck, host-service 1503 tests pass.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
…native stack

libsql reached the tree through @mastra/libsql and nothing else ever used it.
With mastra gone it is dead weight: no source imports it, drizzle only ever
uses the better-sqlite3, bun-sqlite and neon drivers, and neither the
host-service bundle, the desktop main bundle, its sourcemap, nor the bundled
CLI binary contains a single reference. It now survives in the lockfile only
as an optional-peer artifact of drizzle-orm.

Dropped the desktop dependency, its externalized-runtime-module entry with
the @libsql and @neon-rs packaged copies and asar unpack globs, the libsql
dependency-preparation step in copy-native-modules, the bundling guard and
platform matrix and presence check in validate-native-runtime, the
host-service and CLI bundle externals, the per-target @libsql platform
bindings, and the sandbox image resolution entry.

Removing the platform check also fixes a latent skip: its early return for an
unsupported platform also skipped the @ast-grep/napi validation below it.
That check now always runs.

Verified with every libsql package moved out of the Bun store, which is what
a clean checkout sees: copy:native-modules, compile:app and
validate:native-runtime all exit 0, and validation reports the ast-grep and
parcel-watcher checks passing. host-service builds with zero libsql in the
bundle. Desktop, host-service and cli typecheck; sherif clean; host-service
1503 tests pass.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
Hooking an agent up during onboarding is not coming back, so the first step's
subtitle should stop promising it. What the step actually does now is pick a
language and install or sign in to the GitHub CLI.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
CI caught what my greps did not: the checks that assert these packages are
present live in a shell script and a workflow, not in TypeScript.

The CLI smoke test require()s libsql from the built distribution, so all
three CLI target builds failed after it stopped being shipped. The desktop
workflow's packaged-binding guard looked for the DuckDB binding in
app.asar.unpacked for the same reason.

Dropped libsql from the smoke test's native-addon probes and repointed the
desktop guard at @parcel/watcher, which is still shipped and still
arch-specific, so the check keeps doing its job of catching an Intel/arm
packaging miss. Also dropped the stale @mastra/core mention from the smoke
test's header.

Verified locally: the darwin-arm64 distribution builds and the smoke test
passes end to end, including its decisive host-service boot, which proves the
bundle's whole module graph resolves without any of the removed packages.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
…efix

Review feedback. A persisted history entry can carry a search string or a
hash, so matching only the bare path and a trailing slash let
"/settings/models?tab=anthropic" survive the sweep and boot the renderer
straight into Not Found — the exact thing the guard exists to prevent. The
prefix now has to end on "/", "?" or "#", which also keeps a sibling route
like "/settings/models-of-agents" from being swept by accident.

Covered by four tests: a retired entry with the cursor on it, one carrying a
search string and one carrying a hash, a sibling route that merely shares the
prefix, and a history whose every entry is retired.

Also drops a dead entry from the biome sync-subprocess ratchet. It named
resolveAnthropicCredential.ts, deleted with the legacy mastra chat in #6461,
so it belongs to the same cleanup as the rest of this branch.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
… stranded

Three cleanups, all fallout from earlier commits on this branch.

Dropped the persisted-history retired-path sweep. A stale /settings/models
entry sends the user to Not Found either way, and that is rare enough not to
be worth carrying a prefix list and its tests. Both history files are now
byte-identical to main.

Removed copyDependencyForPackage from copy-native-modules and the chain it
was the only caller of: copyExactModuleVersion, readInstalledModuleVersion
and the semver import. Deleting the libsql preparation step orphaned all of
it, and biome's unsafe autofix hid that by renaming the function with a
leading underscore instead of reporting it.

Promoted the branch-name helpers now that the model call is gone and both
generateBranchNameFromPrompt functions were thin wrappers. host-service
inlines the two shared helpers at its only call site and loses the module.
Desktop keeps the part that is real work, conflict resolution, exported as
deduplicateBranchName from a file no longer named for an AI that is not
involved.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01TzD4tqeanYqTMxpWRJGpwZ
The packaged-binding guard needs a native package whose *target*-arch copy is
guaranteed, otherwise it can fail a legitimate cross-arch build. DuckDB
qualified because copy-native-modules fetched its target binding from npm;
@parcel/watcher does not, since its platform packages are only copied
opportunistically out of the Bun store, and on an x64 build from an arm64
runner none of them match.

@ast-grep/napi is the right target: copyAstGrepPlatformPackages resolves the
package for TARGET_PLATFORM/TARGET_ARCH, fetches it from npm when missing,
and exits 1 if it cannot, so its absence from the packaged app is a genuine
cross-arch miss. Match any .node inside the arch-specific directory rather
than hardcoding a filename only verifiable on one arch.

saddlepaddle merged commit 3dbd781 into main Sep 4, 2026
20 checks passed
hxp2023 added a commit to hxp2023/superset that referenced this pull request Sep 5, 2026
Second sync: merges main through 8ca2de4 (26 commits past the previous sync).

Conflicts:
- GeneralSettings.tsx: kept the Sandboxes section icon import (LuContainer); dropped LuBrain, whose Models-section use site was removed by main (ParadevAI#7162)
- createTestHost.ts: kept the hostAuth override (sandbox CLI-token tests); dropped the orphaned chatService override whose consumer was removed by main

Follow-up fixes for main's new regimes:
- Sandboxes settings label wrapped in msg() (ParadevAI#7180 MessageDescriptor requirement)
- SandboxSettings action moved into the closed HostServiceAction set as updateSandboxSettings (ParadevAI#7180 i18n)
- useHostWorkspaces.utils.test.ts fixture gained sandboxed: false (required snapshot field from this branch)
- No new main drizzle migrations; 0031_small_silverclaw stays at the chain tip

Gates: typecheck green in all 33 workspaces (run per-package; bun 1.3.14 bunx cannot run i18n compile on Windows, catalogs compiled via the local @lingui/cli binary), biome 2.4.2 clean.
