fix(relay): un-wedgeable tunnel supervision + SDK relay resolution - #6724
Conversation
Three confirmed field incidents shared one signature: host process alive and API-reachable, relay tunnel down on every relay, zero reconnect attempts, fixed only by a manual restart. Reproduced mechanism: a hung getAuthToken() inside the v2 url provider stalls partysocket before it creates a socket, so its connectionTimeout never arms and the cycle dies with no timer left anywhere (empirically: 1 attempt then silence, forever). The v1 client had the sibling defect: the watchdog only supervised OPEN sockets, and abandoning a dead peer relied on a close handshake it may never answer. - v2: bound every url-provider step with a 15s timeout (hang -> fallback value, cycle keeps moving); never reject the provider; watchdog now also kicks partysocket whenever the control socket sits outside OPEN past a 60s grace. - v1: watchdog supervises every state — silence in OPEN, sockets stuck in CONNECTING/CLOSING past a 30s grace, and a dead reconnect chain — and abandons sockets by detaching immediately instead of waiting for the peer's close reply. - both: the relay URL is re-resolved through the API on every reconnect attempt (falling back to the last known URL), so a server-side relay move converges on the next reconnect instead of the next process restart. Verified against the live relay: old client wedges permanently on a hanging token provider; fixed client retries indefinitely under hanging and throwing providers alike.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe SDK and tunnel clients now resolve relay URLs with caching, timeout, and fallback behavior. Tunnel clients also monitor control sockets from connection start and recover sockets that remain non-open or silent. ChangesTunnel reliability
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The change improves tunnel recovery, but SDK clients created through withOptions may remain pinned to an old relay, relay discovery may delay fallback much longer than intended, and failed lookups may overwrite a working dynamic relay with a stale fallback. These bounded correctness and availability risks should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Preserve the cached relay URL when API resolution fails.
resolveRelayUrl returns options.relayUrl after an API error. Both clients treat that value as a successful refresh and overwrite the last known relay URL. If the API moved the host to a new relay and then becomes temporarily unavailable, reconnects return to the initial configured URL instead of the known working relay.
Make refresh resolution return null or reject when it cannot provide an endpoint. Use the configured fallback only for the initial connection. Update the clients only when refresh resolution returns a URL.

Thank you for your contribution! 🎉 |
The SDK (and mcp-v2 riding it) hardcoded https://relay.superset.sh, the one caller family left out of the API-decides-the-relay refactor. After a server-side relay move its host-routed tRPC calls (workspace list / create / delete) pinged a relay the host had left and reported it offline. Now the relay is asked of host.relayEndpoint before each host-routed call (cached 60s, single-flight), with the configured URL as fallback; an explicit relayURL option or SUPERSET_RELAY_URL env still wins unchanged.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Preserve implicit relay resolution in withOptions.
Line 326 marks any supplied relayURL as explicit. withOptions() passes this.relayURL to the new constructor. For a client created without a relay override, this value is the built-in fallback URL. The cloned client then skips _getRelayUrl() and continues to use the old relay after a server-side relay move.
Store and propagate the original explicit-configuration state, or omit relayURL when cloning an implicitly configured client.

Disable retries for relay discovery.
The timeout: 10_000 value applies to one request attempt. this.get() retries timeouts and retryable responses by default. With the default retry count, fallback can wait for three 10-second attempts plus backoff before host routing starts.
Set maxRetries: 0 for host.relayEndpoint so the resolver falls back after one bounded attempt.

…ting Every rescue the new supervision performs is a wedge that would have needed a manual restart, so it is worth counting: reportTunnelRescue sends one Sentry event per reason per hour (v1_stuck_socket, v1_dead_reconnect_chain, v2_token_fetch_failed, v2_control_stuck). Without it the fix is unfalsifiable in the field — a wedge that does not happen leaves no trace.
The bug class
Three field incidents this week (two user reports + one detailed feedback doc) shared one signature: host process alive and API-reachable, relay tunnel connected to no relay, zero reconnect attempts anywhere, fixed only by manually restarting the host service. One reporter's watchdog log showed a 4.4-hour rescue on a 75-second timeout.
Reproduced mechanism (v2, the current fleet)
Partysocket awaits the async
urlProviderbefore creating a socket, so itsconnectionTimeoutcannot cover it. AgetAuthToken()that hangs (network call to an unreachable API, no timeout) stalls the provider forever — the retry cycle dies with no timer running anywhere. Reproduced against the live relay: old client makes 1 attempt then goes silent permanently; fixed client keeps cycling indefinitely. (A throwing provider was already survivable — the hang is the killer.)The v1 client has the sibling defect: its watchdog early-returns unless the socket is OPEN, and its silence recovery calls
close()and waits foronclose— which a dead peer never delivers (undici has no close-handshake timeout), leavingCLOSINGsockets supervised by nothing. The fix — one invariant
At every moment, some timer is armed that leads back to a healthy socket.

Summary by cubic
Prevents the tunnel from wedging and ensures host-routed SDK calls use the active relay. Previously v2 could stall on a hanging URL provider and v1 could sit in CONNECTING/CLOSING waiting for a peer; now both always progress back to a healthy socket, and we emit limited Sentry signals that the supervision worked.
