feat(workspace-protocol): pin the workspace API both runtimes must serve - #6457
saddlepaddle wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
The contract is the shared surface between a laptop's host-service and the future cloud sandbox runtime: 64 procedures across 15 namespaces, plus the WS/REST routes, event-bus messages, and terminal replay invariants. Paths are wire-identical to what host-service serves today, so it complies without a shim and clients can adopt it as a pure type change later. Three things the contract makes explicit that were previously only in code: - Error taxonomy: host-service throws TRPCErrors carrying informal cause.kind discriminants that clients string-match with no shared type. They are now a discriminated union with a type guard. - Exposure: every procedure declares whether it is authenticated, public, or loopback-only. notifications.hook is loopback-only by design — it is unauthenticated so agent shells need no token, which is safe only because the caller dials 127.0.0.1. A runtime that routes it from the relay would let an anonymous caller forge lifecycle events for any terminal. - Terminal replay invariants: the 64KB replay buffer, the 2MiB epoch:seq catch-up ring, and the exact/tail/reanchor attach modes are exported constants, so a second implementation cannot silently diverge and produce garbled scrollback on reconnect. Compliance is enforced by a test in host-service that walks every contract path against the built router. Verified to bite: renaming terminal.hasRunningProcess makes it fail and name the missing path. Excludes the host overlay (workspace/project/creation/settings management) — a sandbox cannot create itself. terminal.daemon.*, terminal.disposeWorktreeSessions, and host.info are marked deprecated with their intended replacements; the renames execute during desktop adoption, when clients are already being touched.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to This additive protocol change defines shared validation and security behavior, but the current contract still permits sensitive-value disclosure, malformed or incompatible payloads, invalid requests, and incomplete compliance checks. Those issues could cause security exposure or client/runtime failures as the protocol is adopted, so the PR is not ready to merge without fixes or explicit acceptance. Possibly related PRs

routerHas can report a false positive.
Two paths accept a non-procedure:
path in nodeandnode[segment]both traverse the prototype chain, so inherited members resolve.- The walk returns true whenever the final node is defined. A nested router object at that path passes even when the leaf procedure is gone.
Use Object.hasOwn and confirm the resolved node is a procedure.

Line 242 only validates kind. It returns true for { kind: "PATH_VALIDATION" } and { kind: "FS_ERRNO", errno: "UNKNOWN" }. Code after this guard can then treat absent or invalid fields as contract values.

🌐 Web query:
For Zod 4.4.3, does z.inferresolve to the parsed output type, and doesz.inputpreserve optional input fields created by.default()?
💡 Result:
In Zod 4.4.3, the behavior of z.infer<T> and z.input<T> remains consistent with established Zod patterns regarding parsed outputs and default values: 1. z.infer resolves to the parsed output type [1][2]. Because Zod schemas with a .default() modifier ensure that a value is always present after parsing, z.infer reflects this by treating the field as required (non-optional) in the resulting TypeScript type [3][4][5][6]. 2. z.input preserves the optionality of input fields created by.default [4][6]. This utility is designed to represent the type expected before the schema is parsed, meaning it correctly identifies fields that can be omitted by the caller because the schema will supply a default value during validation [3][4][6]. In summary, if you need to represent the data required by the consumer before Zod processes it, use z.input<T>. If you need to represent the data after Zod has successfully parsed and applied defaults, use z.infer<T> [4][6].

Validate every binary wire field as standard Base64.
z.string() accepts arbitrary text in fsReadResultSchema.bytes.content and base64PayloadSchema.data. The host router also defines a separate unvalidated writeFileContentSchema, and the attachment schema replaces Base64 validation with z.string().min(1). Apply z.base64() at all binary boundaries. Preserve the Base64 validator when enforcing non-empty attachments. Malformed input can otherwise be silently decoded into incorrect bytes by Buffer.from(..., "base64").

`workspace-trpc` would collide with the existing `workspaceTrpc` React client in packages/workspace-client, and would undersell a package that is a third WS routes, event messages, and replay invariants. `protocol` is already this repo's word for a wire shape shared between implementations: packages/chat exposes ./protocol, and the ACP package was session-protocol. Renames the package, the root export (workspaceProtocol), the structural types (ProcedureSpec, ProtocolNamespace, ProtocolNode, isProcedureSpec, InferProtocolInput/Output), and the compliance test file. Keeps the word contract in prose where it means the compliance obligation rather than the package.

Assert the expected protocol size.
The PR objective states 64 procedures. toBeGreaterThan(50) allows a partially composed protocol with 51 to 63 procedures to pass. Missing declarations never enter paths, so the router coverage assertion cannot detect them. Assert the exact count or maintain an explicit expected path list.
Update the assertion whenever the protocol procedure set changes.

53, Update the non-trivial contract assertion in the protocol compliance test to
require exactly 64 paths instead of accepting any count above 50, and revise
this expected value whenever the protocol procedure set changes.
The package defined a bespoke spec format (ProcedureSpec/ProtocolNamespace/isProcedureSpec) plus a compliance test that walked procedure paths. That was a parallel type system reimplementing a weaker version of what tRPC already does: the test asserted procedure NAMES existed and never validated input/output shapes, so schema drift passed silently. Now the package is zod schemas and nothing else. The drift guarantee comes from shared object identity — both runtimes import the same schema object into their .input()/.output() calls, so they cannot disagree, and there is nothing to keep in sync. Files nest to mirror host-service/src/trpc/router/<namespace>/<namespace>.ts so it is obvious which protocol module corresponds to which router. Exports are namespace-prefixed (terminalListInput, gitGetStatusOutput) with shared building blocks as *Schema, used directly rather than aliased, since object identity is the point. Metadata that tRPC cannot express survives as prose, not data: the notifications.hook loopback-only warning, the three deprecated device-vocabulary names with their replacements, and the terminal replay invariants. host-service is untouched by this PR (git diff origin/main -- packages/host-service is empty); the compliance test and its devDependency are gone.

🌐 Web query:
For Zod 4.4.3, does z.number()accept fractional values, and doesz.number().int().positive() reject non-positive or fractional values?
💡 Result:
In Zod 4.4.3, the behavior for number schemas is as follows: 1. Does z.number accept fractional values? Yes. The z.number schema validates that an input is a finite number, which explicitly includes fractional values (e.g., 3.14) [1][2]. 2. Does z.number.int.positive reject non-positive fractional values? Yes. The.int validator ensures that the number is an integer, meaning it will reject any fractional value (e.g., 3.14) [3][4]. Furthermore, the.positive validator ensures the number is greater than 0 [1][2]. Therefore, a schema defined as z.number.int.positive will reject both fractional values (due to.int) and non-positive values (e.g., 0 or negative numbers) [4].

Zod 4.4.3 z.base64 documentation validation behavior
💡 Result:
In Zod 4.4.3, z.base64 is a dedicated schema function used to validate that a string is a valid Base64-encoded value [1][2]. The validation behavior of z.base64 is designed to be strict [3]. As of version 4.4.3, the implementation includes a safety mechanism that explicitly rejects strings containing whitespace (such as spaces, tabs, or newlines) [3]. This was implemented to prevent "atob" bypasses, where the underlying browser or runtime atob function might strip whitespace from an invalid string and incorrectly validate it as Base64 [3][4]. Key aspects of its behavior include: - Strict Whitespace Handling: Unlike some native parsers that ignore whitespace by default, z.base64 performs a linear scan (using /\s/.test) to reject any string containing whitespace before proceeding with further validation [3]. - Base64 Specification: It validates that the input conforms to canonical Base64 encoding [3]. - Empty Strings: An empty string is considered valid Base64 and will pass validation, as it is technically a valid (albeit empty) Base64 sequence [5]. - Integration: z.base64 maps to { type: "string", contentEncoding: "base64" } in JSON Schema output [6]. If you need to support inputs containing whitespace (for instance, if you are receiving Base64 data from systems like PostgreSQL that might insert line breaks), you must normalize the input before passing it to the validator [7]. A common approach is using z.preprocess to strip whitespace: const base64Schema = z.preprocess( val => typeof val === "string"? val.replace(/\s+/g, ""): val, z.base64);

An earlier revision of this PR defined a bespoke spec format (
ProcedureSpec/ProtocolNamespace/isProcedureSpec) plus a compliance test that walked procedure paths. That was over-built — a parallel type system reimplementing a weaker version of what tRPC already does. Worse, the test asserted procedure names existed and never validated shapes, so an input schema changing fromz.string()toz.number()would have passed silently. It is now schemas and nothing else. The drift guarantee comes from shared object identity: both runtimes import the same schema object into their
.input()/.output()calls, so they cannot disagree, and there is nothing to keep in sync or walk. Also tested and rejected: sharing a router type and having each side

A router built on one context is not assignable to a router built on another even when the schemas match exactly, because router types embed the context — and our two runtimes cannot share a context (host-service's carries db, api, git, providers, event bus; a sandbox's will not).Layout mirrors the router
