fix: solve #3235 — reduce EDR/security agent CPU from idle terminals - #3236
github-actions[bot] wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
Three targeted fixes to reduce filesystem events and process spawns that drive kernel-level EDR agents (e.g. Elastic Endpoint) to high CPU: 1. Scrollback write debounce (terminal-history.ts): Buffer PTY output in memory and flush to disk at most once every 250ms instead of on every chunk. Also fixes a pre-existing bug in flush() that could hang when stream.write() didn't trigger backpressure (drain event never fires unless write() returned false). 2. Port scan interval (port-manager.ts): Increase periodic scan from 2,500ms to 10,000ms. Hint-based scans still fire within 500ms of detecting "listening on port X" in output. 3. Idle session skipping (port-manager.ts): Skip sessions with no detected ports and no port-hint output in the last 60s during periodic scans, eliminating ps/lsof spawns for idle terminals. Closes #3235

Great fix overall. One small addition worth considering: scanAllSessions() could short-circuit at the top when no sessions are registered at all, to avoid any overhead on startup or after all terminals are closed:
private async scanAllSessions(): Promise<void> {
if (this.isScanning) return;
if (this.sessions.size === 0 && this.daemonSessions.size === 0) return;
this.isScanning = true;
// ...
}This complements the idle-session skipping nicely — isSessionIdle handles the case where sessions exist but are inactive, while this handles the case where there are no sessions at all.

bytesWritten over-counted when chunks are dropped under backpressure
bytesWritten is unconditionally incremented in write() before data reaches the debounce buffer:
this.bytesWritten += bytes; // ← always runs
this.debounceBuffer.push(data);But in flushDebounceBuffer(), when the in-memory backlog is full (pendingWriteBytes + bytes > MAX_PENDING_WRITE_BYTES), the batch is silently dropped with no rollback of bytesWritten. This inflates the counter, causing the MAX_HISTORY_BYTES cap check in write() to fire prematurely — terminal history gets truncated well before the 5 MB limit when disk I/O is slow.
Before this PR, bytesWritten was only incremented on paths that actually wrote or queued data. The refactor moved the increment before the drop gate in flushDebounceBuffer(), creating a regression.
Fix: remove this.bytesWritten += bytes from write() and add it in flushDebounceBuffer() only on the two paths that actually persist data:
// queue path (backpressured):
this.pendingWrites.push({ data: combined, bytes });
this.pendingWriteBytes += bytes;
this.bytesWritten += bytes; // only count what's queued
return;
// direct write path:
const ok = this.stream.write(combined, "utf8");
this.bytesWritten += bytes; // only count what's written| await writer.flush(); | ||

Debounce batching invariant is not verified
The comment at lines 60–62 self-describes the gap:
// We can't easily read the file without knowing the exact path, but
// close() succeeds without error, proving data was flushed correctly.The tests confirm write() + flush() + close() don't throw, but they don't verify the core claim: N calls to write() should result in far fewer actual stream.write() calls. An accidental removal of the debounce timer would leave all these tests green.
Consider injecting a mock/spy stream to count stream.write() invocations, or asserting on the private debounceBufferBytes field immediately after write() (should be non-zero) and after flush() (should be zero).
- Remove terminal-history.test.ts (6 tests, none with assertions; also polluted ~/.superset/terminal-history via unscoped homedir()) - Remove port-manager.test.ts (3 tests, all constant-only) - Strip EDR-context comment blocks that restate the commit message

Summary
flush()that could hang whenstream.write()didn't trigger backpressure.ps/lsofspawns for idle terminals.Root cause
EDR agents (e.g. Elastic Endpoint) intercept every file open, stat, and process spawn at the kernel level. Two independent sources in Superset drove sustained high CPU:
HistoryWriter.write()calledstream.write()on every PTY data chunk — hundreds of times per second per active session — each causing an mtime update that the EDR re-inspects.PortManagerspawnedps+lsofevery 2.5s per registered session. With 13 open sessions, that's ~14 process spawns every 2.5s, each intercepted by the EDR.Test plan

Summary by cubic
Reduces EDR/security agent CPU by batching terminal scrollback writes and skipping unnecessary port scans, especially for idle terminals. Keeps port detection fast for active dev servers, fixes a rare flush hang, and removes no‑op tests/comment bloat.
