[feat] feature request(v2): project custom icon background color #4245

Closed as duplicate

Description

@chairuosen

In version 1, I could quickly find the target project among a dozen projects by using the project's custom color title is the sidebar. However, after upgrading to version 2, they are all grayed out by default. I know I can set icon images, but I don't have time to generate icons for dozens of projects myself. Quickly setting a background color and lettering is the best way.

    Triaged this and the conclusion is: there's no bug to reproduce — this is a net-new feature request rather than a regression with a fix path.

    What I checked

    • ProjectThumbnail (the sidebar icon component, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/components/ProjectThumbnail/ProjectThumbnail.tsx) renders a uniform bg-muted gray fallback with the project's first letter when no iconUrl is set.
    • The v2 v2_projects schema (packages/db/src/schema/schema.ts) only has iconUrl — there is no iconBackgroundColor / iconColor column.
    • The legacy v1 projects table also has no color field, so v1 didn't persist a per-project background color either. (If v1 displayed colored backgrounds, it likely derived them deterministically from the name/slug rather than storing a user-chosen color.)
    • The tRPC v2-project router exposes uploadIcon, resetIconToGitHub, and removeIcon — no color endpoints.

    Why no PR

    Because there's no broken behavior, a reproduction test isn't applicable. Implementing this properly needs product decisions (preset palette vs. arbitrary color picker, whether to auto-derive a default from project name as v1 apparently did, accessibility/contrast for the letter on top, etc.) plus a schema migration, tRPC changes, and a settings UI — too large for an automated triage pass.

    Leaving open for the team to scope.

    Closing as a duplicate of #5608, the consolidated tracker for stale themes-appearance issues from the July 2026 stale-issue sweep (no activity since 2026-06-01). If this still applies on a current build, comment on #5608 and we'll reopen.
