Changes

  • Validate existing clusters before package updates and route latest updates through the controlled rolling upgrade flow.
  • Restore original allocation and ML settings, preserve failures, and verify node versions and cluster recovery.
  • Add regression tests and API failure checks to the existing 8-to-9 Molecule scenarios.

Validation

  • 98 local unit/mock tests passed on Ansible Core 2.20.10; a multi-node smoke test passed on 2.21.5.
  • Upgrade detection contract, syntax checks, ansible-lint, yamllint, argument-spec checks, and CI coverage checks passed.
  • Molecule containers and real package upgrades were not run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Elasticsearch upgrades now validate cluster health, membership, security, and version compatibility before making changes.
    • Rolling upgrades use a controlled, one-node-at-a-time process and verify service recovery and cluster rejoin.
    • Temporary allocation and machine-learning settings are restored after upgrades, with cleanup validation and fallback handling.
    • Single-node upgrades now manage restart and logging behavior explicitly.
    • In-place downgrades are rejected before package changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The Elasticsearch role now validates upgrade prerequisites before changes, previews package candidates, performs secured one-node upgrades, restores temporary cluster settings after failures, and supports singleton handler activation. New Molecule and unit tests cover these flows.

Changes: Elasticsearch upgrade flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Candidate detection and package routing
roles/elasticsearch/tasks/elasticsearch-upgrade-detection.yml, roles/elasticsearch/tasks/main.yml, tests/unit/test_repository_contracts.py
The role rejects in-place downgrades and previews unpinned package updates before selecting the upgrade path.
Preflight checks and scenario wiring
roles/elasticsearch/tasks/elasticsearch-upgrade-preflight.yml, roles/elasticsearch/tasks/main.yml, molecule/shared/verify_upgrade_preflight.yml, molecule/elasticsearch_upgrade_8to9*, tests/integration/elasticsearch_upgrade_detection_contract.yml, tests/variable_coverage.yml
The role and scenarios validate service state, security, cluster health, node membership, and unchanged state after a rejected attempt. Singleton scenarios also validate logging changes and handler clearing.
Per-node upgrade and settings restoration
roles/elasticsearch/tasks/elasticsearch-rolling-upgrade.yml, roles/elasticsearch/tasks/elasticsearch-upgrade-restore.yml, roles/elasticsearch/handlers/main.yml
The rolling workflow updates one node at a time, verifies the running node, restores attempted allocation and ML settings after failures, and permits singleton handler restarts.
Upgrade safety test coverage
tests/plugins/action/upgrade_safety_mock.py, tests/plugins/strategy/upgrade_safety_mock.py, tests/unit/test_upgrade_safety.py
Mock plugins simulate Ansible actions and Elasticsearch APIs. Tests cover upgrade ordering, rejection paths, repositories, check mode, cleanup, handlers, and downgrade prevention.

No-op latest runs can fail when a single-node cluster is yellow or its service is stopped. Move that preflight behind candidate detection before merging, unless this behavior is explicitly accepted.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Run the latest preflight only after the preview finds an upgrade candidate.

When elasticstack_version is latest and the package is installed, this include runs on every run. It also runs when no package update exists. The preflight then requires an active service, credentials, and cluster health at elasticsearch_upgrade_wait_status (default green), with every group member joined.

This blocks no-op latest runs in common states:

  • A single-node cluster with replica-bearing indices stays yellow. Each latest run then polls for 100 × 30 s and fails.
  • A stopped service fails the run. Before this change, the role started the service in this case.

The no-op path does not need these gates. elasticsearch-rolling-upgrade.yml already runs the preflight again before it changes anything. Limit this include to _elasticsearch_needs_rolling_upgrade. Run the preflight for latest after Select rolling upgrade before unpinned package changes (Line 208), and only when _elasticsearch_upgrade_candidate.changed is true.

so it runs only when `_elasticsearch_needs_rolling_upgrade` is true; remove the
