feat(ast): FP8 self-quantization of the original checkpoint - #1907
families/ast (Audio Spectrogram Transformer, AudioSet 527-label classifier) refused quantization=fp8. No ModelOpt FP8 checkpoint exists for AST, so the original checkpoint is quantized at build time. The family builds one static batch-1 engine (input [1024, 128]).
Exit Criteria
trtmc ast build ... --precision fp16 --quantization fp8 builds a bundle with the same engine I/O (input_values, logits) as the unquantized one.
Unquantized builds are unchanged.
The quantized projections run as real FP8 GEMMs (plan inspector), the bundle gets smaller, and the engine is faster than the fp16 engine at close accuracy.
A projection with no calibrated scale fails the build instead of staying silently unquantized.
Non-goals: NVFP4, batch greater than 1 (the family accepts batch 1 only), other AudioSet checkpoints (they raise and ask for the calibration tool).
Implementation
Recipe source: no official FP8 config or spec exists for AST, so the recipe follows the Audio guideline of the team quantization flow: encoder linears are quantized; the front end (patch stem, positions), norms and head (classifier) are not.
quantization.py (new): FP8 weight quantizer (scale = amax / 448 of the original weight, one projection at a time, FP8 weights are never stored), Q/DQ graph context, -peep:match_dual_gemm=off only when the TensorRT build lists the knob, DETAILED profiling verbosity. Each quantized projection is activation -> Quantize -> Dequantize -> MatMul with FP8 weight -> Dequantize on the other input.
Dequantize and MatMul run in fp16 (the FP8 build requires precision fp16). The FP8 GEMM accumulates in float32 and applies the scales in its epilogue, so TensorRT fuses the bias and the output cast into the GEMM. A float32 Dequantize writes a float32 GEMM output and needs a separate cast and bias pass (see the comparison below). Output above the fp16 range would give inf; the NaN scan below is the guard.
fp8_activation_scales.json (new): scales keyed by shape plus the first classifier biases (AudioSet releases of one geometry share every shape but not the weights). An unknown checkpoint raises and tells the user to run the calibration tool. A projection with no entry raises ValueError naming the projection and calibrate_fp8_scales.py.
model.py, encoder_builder.py: quant_ctx is threaded into the q, k, v, attention output, fc1 and fc2 matmuls; quantization=fp8 accepted, other modes raise; fp32 precision with fp8 raises.
Quantized: query, key, value, attn_out (the attention is decomposed, so its output projection is quantized as well), fc1, fc2 of the 12 layers = 72 projections. Unquantized: patch stem, norms, positions, classifier.

NaN scan: 0 non-finite logits for all 292 inputs on both TensorRT versions (largest logit 15.3 against 15.4 in the fp16 engine). In a diagnostic build that exposes every residual sum and projection output (97 tensors, 292 clips), nothing was non-finite; the largest projection output was 112. Some outputs are up to 23x above 65504 x input_scale x weight_scale, the bound where an fp16 accumulator would overflow, and stay finite because the FP8 GEMM accumulates in float32 (f8_f8_f32_f16_f16). The diagnostic build changes fusion, so it is a range check; the verdict rests on the logits of the real engine.

Repository head: this commit on top of upstream/main (86ee225f); tests and checks ran on this base.
Not Run / Remaining Gaps
Native-runtime E2E with an FP8 bundle (needs the C++ runtime build) and a premerge manifest: not added. The existing parity test compares raw logits to PyTorch with a tolerance of 0.005, which an FP8 engine does not meet (cosine 0.99994, 96.6% top-1 agreement), and the family has one pinned revision (f826b80d); a second manifest would need a loosened tolerance. Engine accuracy was measured with a Python harness that drives the engine directly.
Batch greater than 1: not supported by the family. Batch 8 and 32 numbers are measurement-only (widened batch dimension in a separate builder) and cannot be claimed for the family until it supports batch.
B200 and H100: tests and batch 1 checks ran on B300 only; B200 was used for the batch 32 comparison only.
Only the AudioSet 527-label checkpoint 0.4593 is calibrated. The 0.450 and 0.448 releases and fine-tunes raise and ask for the calibration tool.
The Dequantize in fp16 choice rests on the NaN scan (292 inputs). A checkpoint or input with much larger activations could overflow the fp16 output range and give inf.

Suggested review order: quantization.py (_wrap_fp8_matmul), the quant_ctx threading in model.py and encoder_builder.py, test_quantization.py, then the scales file.
Add `--quantization fp8` to the ast family. There is no ModelOpt FP8 checkpoint for
AST, so the original checkpoint is quantized at build time, one projection at a time
(scale = max(abs(weight)) / 448). FP8 weights are never stored.
- Activation scales were calibrated once with ModelOpt FP8_DEFAULT_CFG over 100 AudioSet
clips (calibrate_fp8_scales.py, developer tool) and are committed in
fp8_activation_scales.json, keyed by shape and the first classifier biases (AudioSet
releases of one geometry share every shape). A projection with no scale entry raises.
- Quantized: query, key, value, attention output, fc1 and fc2 of the 12 layers (the
attention is decomposed). The patch stem, norms and classifier stay unchanged.
- Dequantize and the matmul run in fp16. The FP8 GEMM accumulates in float32, so the
output stayed finite on 292 real and stress inputs, and TensorRT fuses the bias and
the cast into the GEMM epilogue (no standalone cast pass).
- Requires precision fp16.
- Measured on B300, batch 1, CUDA graph: 1.17x (TensorRT 11.1) and 1.25x (11.4) faster
than the fp16 engine, bundle 169 -> 90 MiB, 96.6% top-1 agreement with the fp16
engine, logit cosine 0.99994; see the PR description.

Adds opt-in quantization=fp8 for the AST AudioSet 0.4593 checkpoint. AST quantizes the original weights at build time and uses calibrated activation scales. FP8 applies to query, key, value, attention-output, fc1, and fc2 projections in each encoder layer. The patch projection, norms, positional embeddings, and classifier remain unquantized. FP8 builds require fp16 precision and batch size 1. Other checkpoint releases and fine-tunes need their own calibrated scales. Unquantized builds retain the existing linear-layer path.
The author reports 1.17× and 1.25× speedups over FP16 on B300 at batch 1 with TensorRT 11.1 and 11.4, respectively. The author also reports a bundle-size reduction from about 169 MiB to about 89 MiB, 96.6% top-1 agreement, 0.99994 logit cosine, and no non-finite logits across 292 inputs. Larger activations may exceed the FP16 output range.
Reported validation: AST tests passed (30 passed, 1 skipped), architecture tests passed (56 passed), and model validation completed on TensorRT 11.1 and 11.4. The skipped test requires TRTMC_E2E. Native-runtime E2E with an FP8 bundle and premerge-manifest validation were not run. B200 batch-1 and H100 checks were not run. Batch-greater-than-1 measurements used a separate builder and do not establish AST support.
Architecture impact
Family-owned files: The change adds AST quantization, calibration, and scale data under families/ast/. AST model construction passes the family-owned quantization context through its encoder builder.
Changed shared surfaces: None identified in the supplied change summary or inspected call path. The encoder builder is AST-owned, and the build configuration changes are in AST’s quantization module.
Dependency direction: AST’s calibration tool imports ModelOpt and Hugging Face components for offline calibration. The supplied evidence does not establish whether these are declared as optional or development dependencies. The AST runtime build consumes the committed scale table; users do not run calibration.
Affected consumers: AST build requests with quantization=fp8 use the new path. Existing unquantized AST builds use the prior linear path. No other family consumer was identified.
Unresolved blast-radius questions: Native-runtime E2E and cross-device checks are unavailable. The reported performance and numerical results are author-reported, not independently verified here. FP16 output overflow remains a stated risk.
Review outcome: HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED. Missing native-runtime E2E and device checks leave material runtime and hardware coverage unresolved. Review-finding severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.
AST adds FP8 quantization for selected encoder projections. A calibration tool generates checkpoint-specific activation scales from audio clips. Quantized builds require FP16 and pass a quantization context through encoder construction.

Summary
Checkpoint scales and calibration families/ast/quantization.py, families/ast/calibrate_fp8_scales.py, families/ast/fp8_activation_scales.json, families/ast/tests/test_quantization.py
The calibration tool fetches and validates audio clips, collects scales for recognized projections, and writes them under a checkpoint key. AST loads and validates scale tables. The committed table contains scales for six projections across 12 layers.
The quantization context builds FP8 Q/DQ matrix-multiply paths for scaled projections and ordinary linear layers for unscaled projections. The encoder builder routes query, key, value, attention-output, and two MLP projections through that context.
Quantized model build families/ast/model.py, families/ast/quantization.py, families/ast/tests/test_quantization.py
Quantized requests require FP16. The model creates and passes the quantization context into engine construction. TensorRT configuration enables detailed profiling and disables the dual-GEMM route when the setting is available and FP8 weights are present.

Full details: Benchmark Validation Integrity
Explanation
The FP8 comparison validates only one implementation. families/ast/tests/test_quantization.py:267-272 builds both plans and compares serialized lengths, but deserializes and checks I/O only for fp8; it does not validate the fp16 plan. The affected native consumer is also not exercised: families/ast/runtime/pipeline.cpp:71-83 forwards the bundle and checks the logits name, element count, and finite scores, while the existing AST manifest is unquantized and no FP8 E2E manifest was added. The reported FP8 native-runtime E2E was not run.
Resolution
Add an FP8 AST E2E manifest and run the quantized bundle through the native runtime. Validate both fp16 and FP8 paths for input/output names, output shape and dtype, finite logits, and numerical parity on the same inputs. If reporting bundle size, compare complete bundles or document the equivalent plan-only accounting. Use the same synchronized timing region and validation workload for both engines.

Skip test_quantized_engine_builds on GPUs without FP8 support.
The test skips only when torch.cuda.is_available() is false. model.build_engine with FP8 Q/DQ needs an FP8-capable GPU, which means SM 8.9 or newer. On a CUDA GPU that lacks FP8 support, such as A100 or T4, the engine build fails. The test then fails instead of skipping. Add a compute-capability guard.

Kernels (plan inspector, DETAILED profiling, TensorRT 11.4): fp32 Dequantize has 141 layers, FP8 GEMM outputs 12 Float (QKV) + 24 Half, and 36 standalone cast+bias kernels (0.108 ms per call); fp16 Dequantize has 105 layers, 36 Half outputs, 0 Float, and no standalone cast or bias pass.

TRTMC_E2Enot set). Newtest_quantization.pycovers: weight scale and bytes, zero weight, every encoder projection quantized, a missing scale raisesValueError(projection name andcalibrate_fp8_scales.py), already-quantized checkpoint refused, other formats refused, unknown checkpoint, key separates checkpoints, committed scales cover every layer, calibration tool name map and CLI, build rejects fp32, dual-GEMM route set only when listed, a quantized projection has fp16 Dequantize and MatMul layers and no cast, tiny engine builds smaller than fp16 with the same I/O.Real model on the final commit:
build(BuildRequest(family="ast", task="audio_to_class_scores", precision="fp16", max_batch_size=1, quantization="fp8"))forMIT/ast-finetuned-audioset-10-10-0.4593, compared with the fp16 bundle of the same checkpoint. 292 inputs: 160 AudioSet eval clips, 64 clips from the calibration shard, 60 length variants (0.5, 2, 5 s cuts of 20 eval clips) and 8 stress signals (silence, full-scale noise, square wave, clipped sine, very quiet noise, impulses, 8 kHz tone, 50x gain). The 60 FP8-input layers are 48 FP8 GEMMs (12 fused QKV, 12 attention output, 12 fc1, 12 fc2) and 12 Quantize layers; the only standalone kernels in the plan besides the fp16 engine's two front-end ones are 12 input-quantize moves of the QKV input (0.022 ms each). On 11.4 the QKV GEMMs use
cutlass3x_sm100_..gemm_f8_f8_f32_f16_f16..epi_tma_bias_f16(fp32 accumulate, fp16 output, bias in the epilogue); on 11.1 they are generated FP8 kernels with fp16 output.Accuracy of the FP8 engine (TensorRT 11.4 shown; 11.1 is equal to 4 digits; floor is the fp16 engine against the PyTorch fp32 model):
Per group, top-1 agreement with fp16 (final commit): eval 0.963, lengths 0.950, calibration shard 0.984, stress 1.000. mAP loses 0.009 against the fp16 engine; the fp32 and fp16 Dequantize layouts differ by 1 to 3 clips (noise).
Some outputs are up to 23x above
65504 x input_scale x weight_scale, the bound where an fp16 accumulator would overflow, and stay finite because the FP8 GEMM accumulates in float32 (f8_f8_f32_f16_f16). The diagnostic build changes fusion, so it is a range check; the verdict rests on the logits of the real engine.Hardware, Environment, and Revisions
