Background

The performance server returned a server-local image URL whose artifact was deleted by default, and the persistent native server had no image-generation operation. Stage 6 of #1667 connects every existing text-to-image checkpoint to published AIPerf. Closes #1673.

Exit Criteria

  • Qualify all seven existing text-to-image checkpoints with one normal full profile per checkpoint and workload. Inventory refreshed against current main 88ceb9f (seven checkpoints, 20 existing variants).
  • Keep existing specs, references, thresholds, dependencies, CI eligibility and merge rules unchanged. No new models or manifests.
  • Receive complete images, join every measured/warmup request to its native output, and report HTTP latency separately from the public Task call.

Implementation

  • Add capability-based image dispatch through the existing public native Task, reusing the CLI's PNG codec and persistent worker ownership. Return complete b64_json before temporary-file cleanup; preserve files until cancelled native calls finish.
  • Reuse catalog controls, bundle inspection, published-client execution and request/metric joins in image-profile. Verify checkpoint/revision/precision/build provenance and each decoded PNG's native artifact hash, geometry and count. Reject unsupported batching, streaming, URL, quality and video-only image controls.
  • Fix two actual family-owned build defects: pinned Qwen-Image and FLUX.1-schnell checkpoints ship split tokenizer assets. Export those original assets to the existing native JSON sections before compiling engines; preserve existing serialized bytes and leave checkpoint caches unchanged. Graphs and model criteria stay unchanged.
  • Add a three-step guide using pip install aiperf==0.13.0, existing build-guide links and an extended startup timeout verified with large bundles. Timing records retain prompt hashes and numeric controls.

Validation

Commands and Results

All seven checkpoints passed their original owning-family model criteria on the exact served bundle, then actual PyPI AIPerf 0.13.0. Each client run used three prompts, concurrency one, five measured requests plus one warmup, zero errors and six complete PNG/native SHA-256 matches: 35 measured + 7 warmup, 42 verified responses in total. The corpus uses the original family prompt, a red bicycle at a white wall, and a watercolor mountain lake at sunrise.

Settings below list precision, resolution, steps and guidance/CFG; seed is 42 except Stable Diffusion (0). Existing mixed-precision layer defaults are retained. These shared-host, small-sample measurements use different existing workloads and are not capacity rankings.

Existing profile / pinned manifest Family Existing settings HTTP p50 / p95 (ms) Task p50 (ms) Images/sec
flux-schnell flux FP16, 1024×1024, 4 steps, 0/1 601.72 / 626.88 380.16 1.661
flux-2-dev flux BF16, 1024×1024, 28 steps, 3.5/1 5,945.49 / 5,958.55 5,741.72 0.168
pixart-sigma-1024 pixart FP16, 1024×1024, 20 steps, 4.5/4.5 966.57 / 1,019.34 743.55 1.028
qwen-image qwen_image BF16, 1024×1024, 20 steps, 4/4 4,350.93 / 4,358.88 4,162.93 0.230
qwen-image-2512 qwen_image BF16, 1024×1024, 20 steps, 4/4 4,367.18 / 4,396.06 4,175.93 0.228
stable-diffusion-v1-5 stable_diffusion FP16, 256×256, 10 steps, 7.5/7.5 110.86 / 113.40 96.24 8.998
z-image-turbo z_image FP16, 1024×1024, 9 steps, 0/0 1,014.76 / 1,082.94 817.82 0.967

All unique HTTP outputs were visually inspected. Stable Diffusion's existing 256×256/ten-step profile produces weak, often abstract images despite passing its unchanged PSNR/SSIM contract; PNG transport identity is not a semantic-quality claim.

Correctness: six checkpoints passed their full unchanged direct E2E selector (one requested/executed case, no requested skips). FLUX.2-dev's full BF16 build succeeded, but the combined build/native test OOMed loading the text encoder. That original failure remains recorded. After the build process exited, the identical BF16 bundle passed the owner's original _native, _official_reference and _assert_contract, with byte-identical matched latents, unchanged settings and thresholds: one fresh-process case passed in 356.45 seconds, zero skips. The paired native/reference images show the requested cat at sunset. Its subsequent real AIPerf run is the BF16 row above.

  • python -m tools.ci pipeline source-quality: 307 passed with Ruff/clang-format on f5d08c74a.
  • python -m tools.ci pipeline package: source archive, native wheel, installed SDK/CLI and immediate native-library loading passed for all 136 families on frozen f5d08c74a.
  • Application suite: 668 passed, two existing optional-dependency skips on 9ebd43aea; changed serving/qualification and tokenizer-asset tests: 33 passed in the detached f5d08c74a review. Qwen/FLUX family CPU suites: 20/36 passed. Native/HF tokenizer IDs match on 129/111 actual-checkpoint prompts; original vocabularies and merges are preserved.
  • Native CPU evidence: 1,550 Python tests passed (two existing skips), 267 C++ tests passed on the identical native implementation. No later C++ changes.
  • Model-catalog and impact validation passed. Production docs build passes on current e16c79cbe; its only change from f5d08c74a is the guide's tested startup-timeout flag and rationale.

Reproduce each row with its table profile, retained already-built bundle and three-prompt JSONL; the environment points to the native runtime, server interpreter and pip-installed client:

PYTHONPATH=core/builder:apps/benchmark:apps/perf_serving:apps/aiperf_qual:. \
python -m trtmc_aiperf_qual image-profile \
--environment ENV.yaml --profile PROFILE --bundle BUNDLE \
  --inputs PROMPTS.jsonl --out RESULTS

For direct serving, use trtmc-server BUNDLE --model-name MODEL --startup-timeout 1800 --request-timeout 1800; the qualifier sets those timeouts automatically. The website guide contains the direct aiperf profile example. Original correctness entry point: python -m pytest families/OWNER/tests/test_e2e.py --e2e-model PROFILE -q with the documented runtime/cache environment. The FLUX.2 retained-artifact verification imports and calls the same owner's native/reference/comparison functions after its successful full build; it does not replace or modify the failed combined selector.

Hardware, Environment, and Revisions

Linux aarch64, shared GB300, CUDA 13.3, TensorRT 11.1, PyTorch 2.12, Diffusers 0.39.0, published AIPerf 0.13.0. Checkpoint pins and model settings are unchanged from the linked manifests. Implementation head: e16c79cbefe3adeef561bb704d2dbf92c8ed075a.

Measurement epochs remain explicit: PixArt 216358918; Stable Diffusion/Z-Image 27148b4d0; both Qwen models and both FLUX models f5d08c74a. Later changes add request validation/provenance, prompt-record privacy, family tokenizer assets and the guide timeout; measurements are not relabelled as executions on a later head. Per-request raw data, hashes, bundles, software/configuration and failure attempts are retained locally.

Not Run / Remaining Gaps

Additional precision, quantization, distributed and partial/L0 variants are inventoried without qualification claims. The original combined FLUX.2 BF16 selector remains an OOM failure; its unchanged model criteria and actual serving workload are independently verified as described above. Required internal CI passed on current head e16c79cbe before normal squash merge. Stable Community CI, CPU, metadata, DCO and CodeRabbit passed; no review threads remained unresolved. Optional experimental Dev CI was still running at merge and is not claimed as passed. Repository merge requirements remain unchanged.

Notes For Future Readers

One image per nonstreaming request is the qualified workload. Model semantics and quality remain family-owned; HTTP/native identity certifies transport. Editing and video are the following separate stages. The guide is website/docs/user-guides/profile-images-with-aiperf.md.

Risk level

  • Medium

Persistent worker dispatch and media lifetime change. Complete-output/ownership regressions, real existing-model qualification and exact-head CI provide separate validation tiers.

Connect the persistent native server to the public image-generation Task. Reuse the performance server's request mapping and return complete PNG bytes before temporary-file cleanup, with native artifact identity and Task timing records.

Add existing-checkpoint discovery, a published-client image profiling command, transport regression tests and a concise usage guide. Owning-family correctness and group-wide GPU qualification remain separate prerequisites; model specs and quality criteria are unchanged.

Apply the existing qualification profile's request controls before formatting AIPerf inputs. Omit unspecified guidance sentinels and require explicit dimensions, denoising steps, seed and guidance so requests describe the actual fixed workload.

📝 Summary

Summary

This change adds persistent native image-generation support through the public Task and exposes it through POST /v1/images/generations. The server validates supported controls, returns a base64 PNG, records its digest, and removes temporary output after the response is prepared. The route rejects unsupported options, including video-only controls.

The new image-profile workflow uses published AIPerf to profile built image bundles. It checks bundle identity, joins measured and warmup requests to native records, and verifies returned PNG identity and dimensions. It reports HTTP latency, Task-call time, and images/sec separately. The workflow does not replace each model family’s quality checks.

The FLUX and Qwen-Image families now export split tokenizer assets before engine compilation. The change also adds a profiling guide and documents the limits of transport-level image verification.

The supplied PR description reports successful qualification runs for seven checkpoints. It also reports a combined FLUX.2-dev BF16 selector failure from an OOM, followed by a successful fresh-process verification of the unchanged bundle’s owner checks. Current-head CI was rerunning at the time of that report.

Architecture impact

  • Family-owned files: families/flux/model.py and families/qwen_image/model.py package tokenizer assets within their owning family. The accompanying tests cover byte preservation and tokenizer behavior.
  • Changed shared surfaces: The native worker protocol, Python server registry and endpoint, image request mapping, response handling, and performance-serving execution path now support image generation. These surfaces can affect server and serving consumers beyond the seven profiled checkpoints.
  • Dependency directions: The AIPerf qualification application imports image request handling from trtmc_perf_serving. The server application also imports request mapping and PNG response handling from trtmc_perf_serving. No new family-to-family dependency is shown in the supplied changes.
  • Affected consumers: Native workers, legacy and SDK model workers, the server image route, the serving app, AIPerf qualification commands, and FLUX/Qwen-Image bundle builds.
  • Unresolved blast radius: The supplied evidence does not establish compatibility across all consumers of the changed worker protocol and shared serving behavior. It also does not include current-head CI results or current review findings. No severity counts can be established from the supplied material.

HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED — Review the shared protocol and serving changes across affected consumers, and confirm the current CI and final check results. This outcome reflects unresolved evidence; it is not a claim that a violation was found.

The change adds native and HTTP image-generation support, a performance-serving PNG response, and an AIPerf workflow for profiling image bundles. It also updates FLUX and Qwen Image builds to package tokenizer assets from existing or locally serialized tokenizer data.

Changes: Image Generation Serving and Qualification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native image-generation worker
CMakeLists.txt, apps/server/native_worker.cpp, apps/server/tests/test_image_worker.cpp
The native worker accepts image-generation requests for legacy and SDK tasks, validates configuration and optional latent files, and writes one PNG with result metadata. A CPU-labeled integration test covers invalid and valid requests.
HTTP image-generation endpoint
apps/server/python/trtmc_server/schemas.py, apps/server/python/trtmc_server/app.py, apps/server/python/trtmc_server/{records,registry,cli}.py, apps/server/python/tests/test_image_generation.py, apps/aiperf_qual/trtmc_aiperf_qual/services.py
The server validates request fields and limits, sends generation work to the native worker, validates its PNG output, and returns base64 image data. Request records and worker capability validation include image generation. Tests cover request and output errors, successful responses, and cancellation.
Serving image responses
apps/perf_serving/trtmc_perf_serving/{openai,images,app}.py, apps/perf_serving/tests/{test_app,test_protocol}.py, apps/perf_serving/README.md
The serving adapter returns generated PNG data and its SHA-256, validates image request options, and uses video mode when mapping video input. Tests and documentation cover image responses and unsupported options.
Image profile catalog and command
apps/aiperf_qual/trtmc_aiperf_qual/{endpoint_catalog,endpoint_profile,cli}.py, apps/aiperf_qual/tests/test_endpoint_catalog.py, apps/aiperf_qual/README.md
The catalog adds an images group and filters out video profiles. The CLI adds image-profile and directs image workloads away from the existing profile command.
Image profile execution and verification
apps/aiperf_qual/trtmc_aiperf_qual/image_profile.py, apps/aiperf_qual/tests/test_image_profile.py, apps/aiperf_qual/README.md, website/docs/user-guides/{profile-images-with-aiperf,image-video-generation}.md, website/sidebars.js
The profiler checks bundle identity, prepares inputs, joins client metrics with server records, verifies PNG identity and dimensions, and writes results and evidence. Tests and user guides describe the workflow and its constraints.

Image-Family Tokenizer Packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
FLUX tokenizer assets
families/flux/model.py, families/flux/tests/test_tokenizer_assets.py
The FLUX build selects tokenizer assets by model version and exports the FLUX.1 CLIP tokenizer when needed. Tests compare token encodings and check source assets.
Qwen Image tokenizer assets
families/qwen_image/model.py, families/qwen_image/tests/test_tokenizer_assets.py
The Qwen Image build resolves tokenizer bytes before packaging and writes them into the bundle. Tests cover existing tokenizer JSON and local tokenizer export.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description completes all required sections with detailed motivation, exit criteria, implementation scope, change categories, validation evidence, environment details, remaining gaps, self-review, and risk rationale.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR addresses the coding requirements in #1673. It adds native image-generation dispatch and POST /v1/images/generations, returns complete b64_json PNG data, records request identity and warmup data, joins Task and HTTP results, and rejects unsupported controls. It reports seven existing checkpoints, unchanged family checks on served bundles, published AIPerf 0.13.0 runs, separate latency metrics, reproducible commands, software, hardware, and validation evidence. The tokenizer changes support the required builds and preserve existing assets and contracts.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to #1673. Server, native worker, qualification, catalog, test, tokenizer-build, and documentation changes support image qualification, public image responses, or reproducibility. The Qwen and FLUX tokenizer fixes address build defects required to qualify the pinned existing checkpoints. No new models, manifests, variants, thresholds, or unrelated feature area is identified.

Full details: Family Ownership Boundary

Explanation

No family-ownership violation is introduced. The changed FLUX code (families/flux/model.py:1031-1043, 1098-1100) reads its own checkpoint tokenizer assets and uses the external Transformers tokenizer. The changed Qwen-Image code (families/qwen_image/model.py:496-511, 560, 601) does the same for its own checkpoint. The new tests import only their owning family modules. The central endpoint catalog change (apps/aiperf_qual/trtmc_aiperf_qual/endpoint_catalog.py:21-48) is a shared task-group inventory and metadata filter; it does not register or select one family through another. No changed family file imports, reads, links to, or reuses another family’s implementation, fixtures, references, or validation artifacts.

Full details: Shared Semantic Neutrality

Explanation

Shared changes are model-agnostic. endpoint_catalog.py derives image inventory and video exclusion from existing catalog task, build, and testcase metadata. image_profile.py obtains controls from resolve_case() and family-owned qualification configuration, then verifies generic bundle provenance. The serving changes add generic image API validation, PNG transport, capability registration, request records, and one-image output handling. They do not add a family name, model topology, tensor rule, engine composition, model-specific preprocessing, or model-specific metric or threshold.

Full details: Benchmark Validation Integrity

Explanation

PASS. The changed paths keep a clear timing contract. apps/server/native_worker.cpp:548-560 and :678-692 measure only the public image Task call, then save PNG output after the timer. apps/server/python/trtmc_server/app.py:551-573 records that Task time separately from worker round-trip time, while apps/aiperf_qual/trtmc_aiperf_qual/image_profile.py:177-183 reports separate task_call_ms, HTTP latency, and throughput metrics. PNG validation and base64 serialization are included in the HTTP path and are not misreported as Task time. The profiler uses concurrency 1, counts one output per request, excludes warmups from measured statistics, and joins each client request to its native record by request ID. The existing text profiling contract uses the same separate native-call and client-latency accounting in text_profile.py:179-202. The changed image_generation consumers are covered by the image and video call sites and protocol tests.

Full details: Shared Change Blast Radius

Explanation

The shared-surface change has a documented model-agnostic need and clear consumers. apps/server/native_worker.cpp dispatches both legacy IImageGeneration and SDK TextToImage tasks through one protocol; trtmc_server/app.py exposes /v1/images/generations; trtmc_perf_serving maps image and video requests; and image_profile.py consumes the catalog for all image profiles. The description states the prior deleted-URL problem, complete b64_json output, one-image and control compatibility rules, timing separation, provenance and PNG identity checks, and the seven-checkpoint validation. Added server, native-worker, serving, catalog, and profiler tests cover these contracts. These endpoint, transport, worker, and qualification behaviors are shared by multiple model families, so they cannot remain family-owned; the tokenizer fixes remain isolated in their owning families.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 19.72% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 71 functions across 25 files. (5 skipped: 5 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Use the public bundle inspector to validate the existing profile's checkpoint, immutable revision, Task, precision, quantization and explicit build controls before qualification. Preserve actual bundle build metadata in the result, including effective precision boundaries.

Reject mismatched bundles before inference and cover identity and build-setting mismatches with regression tests.

Keep frame count, duration and frame-rate options exclusive to the existing video transport. The single-image route now rejects those fields instead of silently discarding them. Add request-mapping regressions and cover quantization mismatches in bundle qualification.

The existing pinned Qwen-Image snapshot provides vocabulary, merges and tokenizer configuration without tokenizer.json, so bundle building failed after compiling all three engines.

Serialize those checkpoint assets with its Transformers fast tokenizer before engine construction. Preserve pre-serialized bytes when present and never write into the immutable snapshot. Regression tests retain token IDs, added tokens and cache contents; existing model specifications and correctness criteria remain unchanged.
