Background

Closes #1668; part of epic #1667. The native server previously accepted only text-generation requests. Users need complete sentence vectors through pip-installed AIPerf, including when the existing performance bridge uses compact diagnostic records.

Exit Criteria

  • /v1/embeddings accepts one string or a one-element string list and returns the complete finite float vector produced by a public native Task.
  • Unsupported batching, dimensions, encodings, and streaming are rejected. Admission, request IDs, terminal records, and native worker lifecycle remain in use.
  • The pinned BGE pilot passes its existing family correctness contract and actual AIPerf qualification, with separate client and native timings.

Implementation

  • Generalize the private worker's operation dispatcher while preserving text generation and streaming. Select declared legacy encoding/embedding Tasks or public semantic embedding/pooled-feature capabilities; no model-name dispatch or new model math.
  • Add strict embedding HTTP mapping, complete-vector/result validation, capability metadata, body/input limits, and request recording. Invalid native outputs retire their lane, including a legacy Task whose declared dimension differs from its values. Unknown token usage is omitted.
  • Preserve vectors in the performance-bridge transport independently of diagnostic compaction and reject options that the native vector cannot honor.
  • Add native/HTTP/transport regressions, a fixed sentence input example, a three-step usage guide linked to existing build guidance, and a narrowly scoped pilot coverage matrix.

The public Task ABI, bundle format, model-family code, dependencies, and numerical criteria are unchanged. Use the updated worker and control plane together.

  • Serving/performance-bridge Python regressions: 93 passed, 1 skipped (an optional reference dependency).
  • Native server build and 4 serving tests passed. Rebuilt the benchmark worker and BERT runtime/CLI.
  • Selected BGE family tests: 2 passed, including the actual FP16 bundle against the unchanged CLS cosine criterion. Owning-family sources and DSO are unchanged by this feature.
  • Source quality on the dimension-check head: 306 passed, including architecture checks, legal headers, inventory, complexity, Ruff, and C++ formatting.
  • Website inventory tests: 14 passed; Node 22 production build passed. An initial npm invocation failed while writing its user-cache log after site generation; using an isolated cache completed successfully.
  • A real native performance-bridge request returned 384 numeric values with compact logging enabled; unsupported dimensions/base64 encoding returned HTTP 400.
  • Published AIPerf 0.13.0 on committed head completed 50/50 measured requests and 5/5 warmups, concurrency one, using the five checked-in sentences. All 55 responses contained complete finite 384-value vectors. Five direct HTTP inputs matched the same bundle's native CLI vectors exactly. Zero client failures, unmatched request IDs, or missing metric exports.

One NVIDIA GB300; Linux aarch64; driver 580.105.08; CUDA toolkit 13.3; TensorRT 11.1.0.106; Python 3.12.3. BGE checkpoint revision 5c38ec7c405ec4b44b94cc5a9bb96e735b38267a, FP16, context limit 512, one persistent replica. The published client was installed from PyPI; no AIPerf source checkout was used. Build/load/startup/warmup are excluded from measured requests; Task-call time remains separate from loopback HTTP latency.

Not Run / Remaining Gaps

Other embedding models, native/HTTP input batching, token-ID inputs, alternative embedding wire formats, and load/capacity sweeps are not qualified here. The public SDK capability paths have source/build coverage; this hardware pilot uses the existing public encoding Task. The 50-request run is an integration example, not a statistical performance regression gate. Remote PR CI is tracked separately from the local results above.

Contributor Self-Review

  • I have completed a self-review of this change.

Reviewed family ownership, capability selection, complete vectors, timing boundaries, error/cancellation/lane lifecycle, compatibility with existing text serving, exact checkpoint identity, and public evidence boundaries.

Notes For Future Readers

Start with the embedding route and protocol result checks, then native dispatch and the performance-bridge transport fix. The family supplies pooling and normalization; serving does not reimplement them. Terminal records omit prompt/vector content; AIPerf raw exports retain the correlated request/response evidence.

Stage 2 is a separate main-based reranking change. Merge this stage first, then reconcile the shared operation/HTTP mechanics when rebasing stage 2. Generated benchmark reports, bundles, and environment state are excluded from this PR.

Risk level

  • Medium
  • High

The private worker dispatcher and HTTP admission path expand beyond text. Existing native/text regressions, malformed-output checks, and actual client/native requests cover the affected behavior.

Current revision

Current head: 27a34598d6cca133b419a315ba6be7a8f3ae02ea, based on main 1ff0f32f1. The latest fix validates legacy Task dimension metadata; malformed-output, existing native serving, and HTTP regressions pass. The 50-request BGE qualification was rerun on this clean committed head and produced the results above. Current-head remote CI is tracked separately.

GitHub community checks, review checks, and the protected internal premerge gate passed on 27a34598d6cca133b419a315ba6be7a8f3ae02ea. Delivered by squash commit c7bd3db87b82e7b853a7547df344cb0af43d5a3f.

📝 Summary

Summary

Adds single-sentence embedding support to the native server at POST /v1/embeddings. The endpoint accepts one non-empty string or a one-element string list. It returns the complete finite float vector and rejects unsupported input shapes, dimensions, and encoding formats.

The native worker dispatches embedding operations through task capabilities. The Python server validates task timing and vector dimensions, and preserves existing request admission and worker-lifecycle handling. The performance bridge requests full observations for embedding operations, even when diagnostic observations are compacted.

The change adds server and bridge tests, sample inputs, and an AIPerf profiling guide. The objectives report a BGE pilot with 50 measured requests and 5 warmups. Each response reportedly contained a finite 384-value vector. Five direct HTTP inputs reportedly matched the native CLI vectors. The objectives also report passing Python, native serving, BGE family, source-quality, website inventory, and production-build checks. These results are author-reported and were not independently verified here.

Architecture impact

  • Family-owned files: The supplied changes identify no edits to BERT implementation or profile files. The sample inputs and profiling guide describe the BGE workload. Pooling, normalization, and model semantics remain family-owned.
  • Changed shared surfaces: The native worker, Python server, model registry, request protocol, performance bridge, and their tests change. These shared surfaces affect task dispatch, capability checks, request and result validation, worker lifecycle, and observation transport.
  • Dependency direction: The native server adds run_task_worker for the Python serving control plane. The supplied changes identify no new family-to-family dependency or external runtime dependency.
  • Affected consumers: Generation and encoding operations share worker dispatch and registry behavior with embeddings. Performance-bridge operations share observation transport behavior. The supplied evidence does not establish the full set of affected bundles and clients.
  • Unresolved blast radius: The BGE pilot does not establish compatibility across all task-capable bundles or bridge operations. It does not qualify other embedding profiles, batching, token-ID inputs, or alternative encodings.

Review outcome

HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED — The evidence does not resolve compatibility across consumers of the changed shared dispatch, registry, and bridge behavior. This outcome does not assert that a violation was found. Current review findings and severity counts were not supplied.

The native worker and Python server now support embedding requests with validated vectors and task timing. The performance bridge handles embedding-specific options and observations. Tests and AIPerf documentation cover the embedding flow.

Mark failed embedding workers for replacement.

When the native embedding Task returns empty, non-finite, or dimension-inconsistent values, run_embedding_protocol raises before producing a successful result. The native protocol returns a fatal error and exits. Python receives WorkerRemoteError, so the extract_embedding retirement branch is not used. Session release then sees a failed worker, but _replace_on_release remains false and no replacement is started.

Set the flag in _mark_failed so both native failures and session retirements restore the replica.

Reject unsupported streaming options in the embedding mapper.

When an embedding request includes stream or stream_options, _check_fields accepts those fields, but openai.embeddings does not pass them to the backend or reject them. The client therefore receives a successful non-streaming embedding response instead of an error for an unsupported embedding option. Add embedding-specific validation that rejects these fields.

Reject empty embedding input in the performance bridge.

openai.embeddings unwraps a one-element list and checks only its type. Therefore, input: "" and input: [""] pass validation and reach the backend. The native embeddings route rejects both values because it requires one non-empty string. Validate emptiness in the mapper so the bridge enforces the backend contract before forwarding the request.
