Background

Publish the completed InternVL3/3.5 Edge-LLM 0.11 rollout, keeping model-specific flow selection inside InternVL. The ONNX route handles admitted InternVL3.5 and documented AWQ checkpoints; original InternVL3 uses the direct builder.

Exit Criteria

  • The nine passing installed single-image profiles are documented separately from runnable AWQ accuracy failures and the 3.5-14B capacity blocker.
  • Compatible pip/source builder tools work with the native SDK; no shared selection changes.
  • Known failing SDK/capacity combinations and unmapped INT4 options are rejected without disabling quality-only failures.

Implementation

  • Update 0.11 artifacts/request handling and family-owned direct/ONNX selection; avoid duplicating original weights in ONNX bundles.
  • Add the family-only INT4 plugin version control through the existing CLI protocol.
  • Guard the recorded 3.5-14B FP16/context384 memory failures and incomplete AWQ SDK combinations, including known native fallback OOM.
  • Retain the existing approved visual-feature helper for the owning image-health test; no new validation framework or relaxed gate.
  • Update the family and website recipes.

Change categories

  • Model or runtime behavior
  • Public API
  • ABI
  • Bundle or artifact format
  • Dependencies
  • Documentation only
  • CI or developer tooling

Validation

Commands and Results

  • python -m pytest -q families/internvl/tests --ignore=families/internvl/tests/test_e2e.py: 27 passed on the publication source.
  • ruff check families/internvl, python -m tools.model_ci validate, git diff --cached --check: passed.
  • C++17 syntax compilation of the adapter against the native Edge 0.11 SDK: passed (not a fresh link or GPU run).
  • npm --prefix website run test:model-support: 14 passed; npm --prefix website run build: passed with Node20.

Prior GPU/installed-package evidence, not new-head CI: original InternVL3 HF1/2/8/14B, InternVL3.5 HF1/2/4/8B, and InternVL3-8B AWQ passed the recorded single-image checks. All13 catalog IDs were attempted. AWQ1/2/14B retain image-quality failures; fresh2B AWQ controls with INT4 v1/SM80 and v2/SM120 build and infer successfully but fail the unchanged color/NED gate. Original3.5-14B export succeeded, but native Edge builds OOM on40GiB SM80 and48GiB SM86; the separate native40GiB runtime also OOM. Native48GiB is an admission estimate, not an executed result.

Hardware, Environment, and Revisions

Publication head: 8a5737dcebaae83ac92e3bf52b9b85d87fcd3561, base d79aaae87fd0b28af55e3e27f877ed4c40f28619. Native Linux x86_64, CUDA13.3 / TensorRT11.1.0.106, FP16 compute, TP1/batch1. Official Edge revision: 95515c2f87fba8982db5a519f9022277667b3cc9. The README identifies checkpoint IDs and the recorded SM profiles; earlier0.10 qualification is not used as0.11 evidence.

Not Run / Remaining Gaps

No fresh GPU/installed-wheel replay on this publication assembly. The passing single-image results do not qualify other contexts, multiple-image public requests, speculative decoding or other precisions. AWQ accuracy remains failed and executable. No sufficiently large compatible device was available for the blocked3.5-14B profile; larger devices remain unqualified, not blacklisted.

Contributor Self-Review

  • I have completed a self-review of this change.

Manual review covered family ownership, fallbacks, capacity/INT4 admission, artifact lifetime, unchanged quality gates and public-content safety.

Notes For Future Readers

Merge #1601 (native Edge0.11 SDK) first; #1600 supplies the optional wheel extra. Neither prerequisite nor unrelated family edits are duplicated. AWQ requires ONNX tools plus all native kernels. Review owning builder/dispatch first, then request/CLI contracts. Edge0.10 bundles need rebuilding for the0.11 adapter. Quality scores are not dispatch conditions.

Risk level

  • Low
  • Medium
  • High

Builder/artifact compatibility and capacity admission change, but are family-local with explicit negative tests and bounded prior GPU evidence.

Source-quality follow-up

  • Applied pinned C++/Python formatting and simplified the all-native-kernels
diagnostic to refer to the owning setup documentation. The admission check,
runtime behavior, and all validation gates are unchanged.
  • python -m tools.community_ci source-quality --base github/main: passed,
including all 306 architecture, CI, and public-source-hygiene tests.
  • python -m pytest families/internvl/tests -q -m 'not e2e' -p no:cacheprovider:
32 passed, 4 skipped. Skips are not model qualification.
  • The owning C++ adapter syntax check against the provisioned Edge 0.11.0 SDK
passed again. This is not a new GPU or installed-package parity run.
  • Exact-head hosted CI must still complete; no premerge pass is claimed.

📝 Summary

Summary

Adds InternVL3 and InternVL3.5 support for Edge-LLM 0.11.0. The family adapter selects the direct-builder or ONNX flow by model and weight format. ONNX bundles avoid copying original checkpoint weights.

Adds family-owned INT4 plugin-version controls and execution-admission checks. Unsupported SDK, plugin, target, and recorded capacity combinations are rejected. Quality-only failures remain runnable. Edge-LLM 0.10 bundles must be rebuilt for the 0.11 adapter.

Updates InternVL tests, Edge-LLM documentation, and the website recipe. Reported validation includes 27 family tests, lint and model validation, C++17 syntax compilation, 14 website tests, and a successful website build. The follow-up reports 306 source-quality tests and 32 family tests passed with 4 skipped. Exact-head hosted CI has not completed. No fresh GPU or installed-wheel replay was run. Prior GPU qualification applies only to the listed single-image profiles. Other contexts, multiple-image requests, speculative decoding, and untested precisions remain unqualified.

Architecture impact

  • Family-owned files: Request handling, CLI options, Edge flow selection, dispatch, runtime bundle validation, and tests remain under families/internvl. The website recipe documents family-specific behavior.
  • Changed shared surfaces: No shared implementation changes are identified in the supplied change summary. The Edge-LLM pin and revision contract change within the InternVL adapter. Compatibility with other Edge-LLM consumers is not established.
  • Dependency direction: The InternVL adapter uses Edge-LLM builder and ONNX tooling. No dependency from shared code or another model family into InternVL is identified in the supplied changes.
  • Affected consumers: InternVL Edge bundle builders and runtime consumers must use the 0.11 adapter contract. Existing 0.10 bundles must be rebuilt. Effects on other Edge-LLM families or consumers remain unresolved.
  • Review outcome: HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED. Available evidence does not resolve compatibility across other SDK consumers or qualification beyond the listed profiles. This outcome does not assert that a violation was found.

The InternVL Edge-LLM adapter adds selected Qwen3 and INT4 AWQ build paths, updates Edge and runtime bundle requirements, and adds dispatch and capacity checks. The CLI exposes INT4 GEMM plugin selection. Tests and documentation describe supported profiles and qualification results.

Explanation

The qualification report lowers the evidence level. Before the change, families/internvl/edge_llm/README.md recorded each profile with an exact source revision, context, and numeric Edge ROUGE-1/ROUGE-L results (base lines 55-70). After the change, the nine-profile table reports only Original, GPU SM, and Pass (head lines 64-95), while the text provides no per-profile source revision, context, output, NED/token score, or threshold evidence. The E2E comparison code remains unchanged: _native still runs the same request, _official_reference preserves the CUDA default and moves both model and inputs to the selected device, and _assert_parity retains the same NED/token gates. Therefore the defect is in the changed report accounting, not in the comparison implementation.

Resolution

Restore per-profile validation receipts for all reported profiles. Include the exact checkpoint revision, workload context and input identity, reference backend, device/software stack, actual output comparison metrics (NED/token agreement or the applicable metric), thresholds, and pass/fail result. Keep AWQ quality failures and capacity failures as separate records. Do not replace quantitative per-profile evidence with a pass-only table.

232-235: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

The pytorch_model*.bin fallback cannot be reached on the ONNX flow.

request_weight_format runs before this check, so component_weight_formats reads only config.json. For a checkpoint that has only .bin shards, the export at Line 255 receives the source directory. That path works. The visual and tokenizer reads then use checkpoint_input, which is the source directory, so they also work. The admission itself is consistent. The problem is that the README says nothing about .bin shards. None of the nine qualified profiles in the README record .bin sources either, so this new admission has no qualification evidence.

Do one of the following:

  • Restrict ONNX admission to safetensors until a .bin profile is qualified.
  • Document the .bin admission in the README.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject AWQ before the missing-SDK native fallback.

If an admitted AWQ request omits int4_gemm_plugin_version and the Edge package is absent, this branch calls run_native() before the AWQ route check. The native callback does not provide evidence that it rejects AWQ or builds the required AWQ artifact. The fallback can therefore bypass the documented requirement that AWQ use the native Edge SDK.

Determine weight_format before this fallback and raise UnavailableEdgeConfiguration when it is int4_awq and the Edge package is absent.

Assert the selected plugin version at the build boundary.

The test stubs build_bundle, so it only captures the request. The separate int4_plugin_version assertion does not prove that builder.build adds --int4-gemm-plugin-version 1 to the ONNX build command. Add a build-level assertion for that command.
