Outcome

The dashboard tunnel now has gateway-scoped host lifetime instead of sandbox lifetime. Destroying, stopping, or recreating a sandbox preserves the active tunnel, while nemoclaw tunnel stop remains the explicit shutdown path.

Reason

Dashboard tunnel PID and log state previously lived under the selected sandbox's temporary service directory. Sandbox cleanup could therefore stop the tunnel when the last sandbox was destroyed or delete its ownership record during any sandbox destroy, leaving HTTP forwarding stopped or unmanaged.

Related issues

Fixes #11628

Changes

  • Store dashboard tunnel PID and log state under the resolved OpenShell gateway port’s NemoClaw state root. An explicit NEMOCLAW_GATEWAY_PORT wins; otherwise the selected or default sandbox’s owning gateway is used, with a process-default fallback when no sandbox resolves. Tunnel commands, root status, and doctor consume that shared state.
  • Preserve the host tunnel during sandbox cleanup. A compatibility migration adopts one live legacy sandbox-scoped tunnel record when no live gateway-scoped record exists; ambiguous live PID records fail closed.
  • On non-Windows hosts, detect current-user cloudflared processes by executable identity. Windows skips that scan. If process inspection fails elsewhere, tunnel start fails closed before creating another public tunnel; status reports no unmanaged conflict until inspection is restored. When a process is detected, start and stop preserve the conflict and provide process-manager recovery guidance.
  • Keep Google Chat webhook tunnels sandbox scoped. Their lifecycle and cleanup behavior are unchanged.
  • Extend the tunnel lifecycle live contract so a successful sandbox destroy must preserve the same tunnel PID and public URL until explicit tunnel stop. Source, CLI, integration, and E2E-support tests protect deterministic state selection, migration, reporting, and cleanup behavior.
  • Document the gateway-scoped tunnel lifecycle, state files, and upgrade recovery behavior.

Verification

  • npm run checks:repository - all 18 selected checks passed, including the live E2E assertion ratchet.
  • npm run docs - passed with zero errors and two existing Fern warnings.
  • npm run test:changed - 377 tests passed; two unrelated snapshot auto-create cases exceeded their 5-second timeout under parallel load. The complete file passed in isolation with --testTimeout=15000 (15 tests).
  • CodeRabbit repair validation on exact local commit 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59: 169 focused tunnel and root-status tests passed with two platform skips; CLI type checking, all 18 repository checks, documentation validation, and git diff --check passed.
  • Pre-commit and pre-push hooks - formatting, linting, repository checks, E2E semantic phase plans, growth guardrails, gitleaks, publication validation, CLI type checking, and commit message validation passed.
  • Trusted manual PR E2E run 37620484884 passed the tunnel-lifecycle target on exact candidate 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59, base/workflow 8021585069084f3622c73a9804b7b00a5058f57b, and dispatch correlation 633ee983-e458-47ee-ac8e-f085c4f4be09. • Documentation evidence: Independent documentation review passed on exact commit 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59; the repaired guidance accurately documents Windows scan exclusion, non-Windows fail-closed startup, status limitations during process-inspection failure, and deferred channel, Ollama, and requested gateway cleanup. npm run docs passed with zero errors and two existing warnings.
  • Documentation agent: Codex subagent /root/docs_review_12566
  • Targeted validation: CodeRabbit repair on exact local commit 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59: 169 focused tunnel and root-status tests passed with two platform skips; CLI type checking, all 18 repository checks, documentation generation and build, and git diff --check passed.
  • Broad gate: passed - npm run validate:pr passed on exact local commit 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59, including repository checks, publication validation, CLI type checking, formatting, lint, gitleaks, and growth guardrails.

Review notes

The exact-head CodeRabbit review identified two candidate-owned stop-path defects. Both were accepted and repaired without expanding scope: deferred unmanaged-process and ownership-inspection failures now allow independent channel, Ollama, and requested gateway cleanup, and legacy migration uses the same selected sandbox and environment as gateway-scoped state. A related dependency-injection nit was fixed to protect the strict inspection contract. A low-value test-helper non-null-assertion suggestion was classified as non-actionable. Focused tests, independent documentation review, publication validation, exact-head CI, and trusted tunnel-lifecycle E2E pass on commit 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59. The PR is leaving draft so draft-disabled automated review can evaluate the same exact head.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Tunnels are associated with the selected OpenShell gateway and can remain active when a sandbox is destroyed.
    • A single eligible legacy tunnel record can be adopted when ownership is clear. Status and health checks flag unmanaged processes and warn when records conflict or ownership cannot be verified.
    • Tunnel commands use the configured gateway port or the selected sandbox’s gateway; ambiguous sandbox ownership is rejected.
    • On supported hosts, tunnel startup fails closed if process inspection fails or an unmanaged cloudflared process is detected. Stopping a tunnel does not stop unmanaged processes.
  • Documentation
    • Updated tunnel command and state-file guidance, including migration and conflict handling.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Tunnel state and process checks now use gateway-scoped state. Sandbox destruction leaves the host tunnel running. The service can migrate eligible legacy PID records and report or block operations on unmanaged cloudflared processes.

Changes

Gateway-scoped tunnel lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gateway-scoped state and migration
src/lib/state/paths.ts, src/lib/state/registry/cross-port.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services.ts, src/lib/tunnel/service-command.ts, src/lib/tunnel/command-support.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services-migration.test.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services.test.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services-gateway-ownership.test.ts, test/cli/doctor-gateway-token.test.ts, test/cli/helpers.ts
Tunnel state resolves under the selected gateway’s NemoClaw state directory. The service can migrate eligible legacy PID records and associated logs. Registry lookups support gateway-scoped sandbox ownership.
Tunnel process checks and operations
src/lib/tunnel/services.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services.test.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services-unmanaged.test.ts, src/lib/actions/sandbox/doctor-system-checks.ts, src/lib/actions/sandbox/doctor-system-checks.test.ts, src/lib/actions/sandbox/doctor.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services-sandbox.test.ts, src/lib/tunnel/services.stop-order.test.ts, test/cli/status-root-json.test.ts
Status, startup, stop, and doctor checks use gateway-scoped tunnel state. Supported hosts can identify unmanaged cloudflared processes. Startup and stop report detected conflicts rather than signaling unmanaged processes.
Sandbox cleanup preserves the host tunnel
src/lib/actions/sandbox/destroy-preflight.ts, src/lib/actions/sandbox/destroy.ts, src/lib/actions/sandbox/destroy.test.ts, src/lib/actions/sandbox/destroy-retained-recovery-flow.test.ts, test/helpers/destroy-flow-test-harness.ts, test/runtime/sandbox/destroy-cleanup-sandbox-services.test.ts
Destroy cleanup passes the selected gateway port, performs legacy-state migration, and calls host-service cleanup with stopCloudflared: false. Recovery-record and cleanup tests cover the updated calls.
Gateway tunnel lifecycle validation
test/e2e/live/tunnel-lifecycle-helpers.ts, test/e2e/live/tunnel-lifecycle.test.ts, test/e2e/support/tunnel-lifecycle-helpers.test.ts, tools/e2e/target-catalogue.mts
The lifecycle test uses a dedicated gateway and gateway-scoped log path. It checks that tunnel status retains the managed PID and URL after sandbox destruction.
Tunnel command and state guidance
src/commands/tunnel.ts, src/commands/tunnel/*, docs/manage-sandboxes/run-sandboxes.mdx, docs/reference/commands.mdx, docs/reference/host-files-and-state.mdx
Command descriptions and documentation describe gateway-based tunnel selection, legacy-state handling, process conflicts, and gateway-scoped PID and log files.

Report migration ambiguity as a doctor warning.

When two discovered legacy records are live, migrateLegacyCloudflaredState() throws. That rejection escapes the cloudflared check, so runSandboxDoctor does not build or return a report. Earlier checks may have run, but their results are not reported. Catch the migration error here and return a warn check with its details and remediation.

Restore the install exit-code assertion.

The test no longer checks the exit code of install.sh. A failed install now passes this step when the sandbox appears in the list, so real install failures are hidden.

Preserve a live legacy tunnel record when the registry row is absent.

If destroy retries after the sandbox registry row is gone, migrateLegacyCloudflaredState excludes that sandbox’s legacy PID directory because its candidate list comes from registered names. Cleanup then removes servicesPidDir at Line 510. A live cloudflared process loses its PID record, so tunnel status and explicit stop can no longer manage it. Qualify and migrate that record for the selected recovery authority, or retain the directory and fail closed when ownership cannot be proved. As per path instructions, “Destructive lifecycle operations must validate before mutation, preserve state/backup invariants, and cover failure, recovery, rebuild, and resume behavior without bypassing the public action boundary.”

Do not let forced local cleanup satisfy the destroy contract.

If the gateway is unreachable, --force permits local-record cleanup without confirming that the remote sandbox was deleted. The command can succeed and the later tunnel PID check can pass while the sandbox still exists. Run this contract without --force, or verify sandbox absence through the gateway before accepting the result.

Assert that destroy preserves the public tunnel URL.

The new assertion accepts the same PID even if tunnel status no longer reports the original public URL. Compare extractTunnelUrl(resultText(statusAfterDestroy)) with tunnelUrl as well as comparing the PID. The stated live contract requires both values to survive destroy.

Read the PID from the gateway-scoped tunnel record. After tunnel start writes gateway-scoped state, this step still reads /tmp/nemoclaw-services-${SANDBOX_NAME}/cloudflared.pid. Migration messages print to stdout and can corrupt JSON status.

prepareTunnelPidDir calls migrateLegacyCloudflaredState. On adoption, that function calls info(), and info() writes to console.log. getServiceStatuses (line 1701) runs during status --json. A migration during that command adds the text [services] Adopted legacy cloudflared state... to the JSON stdout. The reviewer requested that these messages go to stderr. Use console.error for the adoption message.

Proposed fix

src/lib/tunnel/services.ts:1315-1324
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not abort the rest of stopAll cleanup because an unmanaged cloudflared exists.

After NemoClaw stops its own tunnel, this block throws whenever unmanagedCloudflaredPids finds any other current-user cloudflared process. The throw happens before stopSandboxChannels, Ollama model unload, and releaseGatewayPortForStop.

Trigger: the user runs an unrelated cloudflared, for example a system service for another hostname. nemoclaw stop then fails and leaves the sandbox channels, Ollama models, and the managed gateway running. nemoClawManagedCloudflaredPids also throws when gateway-root or registry state cannot be read, which aborts the same cleanup.

NemoClaw never signals these processes, so they do not block the remaining cleanup. Record the condition, finish the remaining cleanup, and report it at the end. A warning also works.

Proposed fix
-  const unmanagedPids =
-    cloudflaredCleanupComplete && pidDir && opts.stopCloudflared !== false
-      ? unmanagedCloudflaredPids(opts, null)
-      : [];
-  if (unmanagedPids.length > 0) {
-    throw new Error(
-      `cloudflared remains running outside NemoClaw ownership (${unmanagedPids.map((pid) => `PID ${String(pid)}`).join(", ")}). ` +
- "Stop it through its process manager; NemoClaw did not signal it.",
-    );
-  }
+  let unmanagedError: Error | undefined;
+  try {
+    const unmanagedPids =
+      cloudflaredCleanupComplete && pidDir && opts.stopCloudflared !== false
+        ? unmanagedCloudflaredPids(opts, null)
+        : [];
+    if (unmanagedPids.length > 0) {
+      unmanagedError = new Error(
+        `cloudflared remains running outside NemoClaw ownership (${unmanagedPids.map((pid) => `PID ${String(pid)}`).join(", ")}). ` +
+ "Stop it through its process manager; NemoClaw did not signal it.",
+      );
+    }
+  } catch (error) {
+    unmanagedError = error instanceof Error ? error : new Error(String(error));
+  }

Then throw unmanagedError from finishCleanup() after the Ollama and gateway steps.

The start-path test does not prove that startAll requests strict inspection.

The injected unmanagedCloudflaredPids callback always throws. unmanagedCloudflaredPids() in services.ts calls the injection without the failOnInspectionError flag. The test therefore still passes if startAll passes false instead of true, and that change would reintroduce the reviewer-reported fail-open path. The injected mock bypasses the behavior under test.

Fix: forward the flag to the injection, and make the test throw only when the flag is set. A second option is to test the real findHostUnmanagedCloudflaredPids path with a failing captureProcessList.

Proposed change
-  unmanagedCloudflaredPids?: (managedPid: number | null) => number[];

Replace the non-null assertion on lastPublicProbe after the bounded loop with an
explicit guard that handles the undefined case before checking httpCode;
preserve the existing behavior when a probe result is present.

Retrospective review of 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59: no blocking defect found.

Non-blocking follow-up: legacy state migration copies cloudflared.log and cloudflared.pid, but not the validated cloudflared.dashboard-port sidecar. On a host where process inspection identifies the cloudflared executable but does not expose its full --url arguments, migrating an active quick tunnel drops the fallback target record. A later nemoclaw tunnel start cannot confirm the process type or target even though the tunnel remains active. A narrow follow-up should migrate the validated port record into the gateway-scoped directory and cover the limited-argv migration case. This is a bounded upgrade edge and does not invalidate the merged change.

E2E context: the PR Review Advisor required only tunnel-lifecycle for this exact commit. It passed in https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37620484884. The run checked out 747d981fa60fbe089f1c30b7fd3e61a33122dc59 and used base/workflow commit 8021585069084f3622c73a9804b7b00a5058f57b. No recommended E2E failed.
