Outcome

On macOS with Colima and DOCKER_HOST unset, nemoclaw onboard starts the OpenShell gateway instead of failing with Socket not found: /var/run/docker.sock.

Reason

Colima exposes Docker through a persisted colima context and does not create /var/run/docker.sock. The gateway reads only DOCKER_HOST. Since #8823, detectDockerHost keeps a reachable CLI default without setting DOCKER_HOST, which undid the fix for #3503.

Related issues

Fixes #12367

Changes

  • Select the socket of a non-default current context when the Docker CLI default answers through it, as an explicit DOCKER_CONTEXT is selected ([Ubuntu 24.04][CLI&UX] host probe ignores DOCKER_CONTEXT and calls a machine ready that onboard refuses #11719).
  • Skip this when /var/run/docker.sock already resolves to that socket, as with Docker Desktop.
  • Let the DNS action and tests inject the context lookup.
  • Update docs/reference/system-readiness.mdx.
  • Pin DOCKER_HOST in the sandbox prebuild environment test, which otherwise inherits the socket that runner.ts now exports on a Colima host.

Verification

  • npx vitest run on the Docker authority, runner, DNS, preflight, and advisory tests: 454 passed.

  • npm run typecheck:cli, oxfmt --check, and oxlint on the changed files: clean.

  • Live on macOS 26.6.2 with Colima 0.10.3, Docker 29.5.2, and OpenShell 0.0.116, with DOCKER_HOST unset:

    Build nemoclaw onboard
main (586438d93) exit 1 at [2/8]: Socket not found: /var/run/docker.sock
this change exit 0; the gateway uses the Colima socket and the sandbox is healthy
  • Merged with main at bf8ab4f54, the Docker authority, DNS, preflight, prebuild, vLLM storage, platform, and runner tests pass on macOS with Colima (279 tests). Without the DOCKER_HOST pin, the prebuild environment test fails there.

  • Commit hooks passed. The diff contains no secrets, API keys, or credentials.

Review notes

  • When the current context and /var/run/docker.sock reach different daemons, the gateway now follows the CLI. It is recreated once, and Docker operation authorities bind --host instead of --context. An explicit DOCKER_CONTEXT already behaves this way.
  • fix(onboard): prefer explicit Docker host #12330 changes precedence when both DOCKER_HOST and DOCKER_CONTEXT are set. This change covers the case where neither is set.
  • Detection adds one local docker context inspect call when the default answers.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • NemoClaw now uses the Docker CLI’s selected local socket when it differs from the default socket, helping the OpenShell gateway connect to the same Docker daemon.
    • The default Docker authority remains in use when both sockets resolve to the same location or the selected context cannot be verified.
    • Remote, unsupported, or default contexts do not change the selected Docker authority.

Colima exposes Docker through a persisted context and does not create
/var/run/docker.sock. The OpenShell gateway reads only DOCKER_HOST, so
onboarding failed with "Socket not found: /var/run/docker.sock".

Select the local socket of a non-default current context when the Docker
CLI default answers through it, unless /var/run/docker.sock already
resolves to that socket.

Walkthrough

When the ambient Docker authority is reachable, NemoClaw checks the current Docker context. It selects a non-default context’s local Unix socket for DOCKER_HOST when that socket differs from the default socket. Otherwise, it retains the default authority.

Docker authority detection can inspect the current context and resolve socket paths. It selects a non-default local Unix socket when that socket differs from the default. Tests cover selection and fallback cases, dependency injection, and subprocess environment handling. The system-readiness documentation describes the selection behavior.

On a host whose current Docker context is Colima, importing runner.ts
now exports that context's socket as DOCKER_HOST. The build environment
test sets DOCKER_CONTEXT but inherits DOCKER_HOST, and main now lets a
nonblank DOCKER_HOST override DOCKER_CONTEXT, so the test fails on such a
host once this branch is merged with main. It fails the same way on main
when the shell exports DOCKER_HOST. Pin DOCKER_HOST to blank so the test
checks only the variables it sets.

Cover context-selected DOCKER_HOST in the DNS action tests.

The connect-flow tests mock runSetupDnsProxy, so they do not execute DNS authority selection. The direct DNS tests cover socket-selected environment values, but no test supplies a non-null inspectCurrentDockerContext result and checks that its host reaches runDocker. Add that regression case.

The DNS action tests always passed a context inspector that found
nothing, so none checked that a context detectDockerHost selects
reaches the Docker commands. Add a case where the CLI default answers
through the colima context and every Docker command runs against its
socket. Without the context selection, it is the only test that fails.
