Outcome

nemoclaw sandbox destroy can now reconcile a retained-recovery record when post-create failure occurs after exact recovery evidence is durable but before pending-create identity is published. Ambiguous, mismatched, identity-free, partially published, and live-sandbox states remain fail-closed without deleting resources.

Reason

The destroy authority selector previously required registry lifecycle identity that does not exist at this valid failure boundary, even though the route reservation, onboarding session, and retained record carry one exact immutable identity tuple.

Related issues

Fixes #11418

Changes

  • Allow the destroy flow to select one session-owned pre-publication recovery record only when the route reservation belongs to the same session, the record has durable identity, the complete session tuple matches, and no competing registry lifecycle evidence exists. The destroy consumer needs this bounded match because the missing pending-create publication cannot be reconstructed from the registry alone. The retained-recovery flow test protects the accepted path and every refusal boundary.
  • Report blocked recovery with ordered cause, retained state, next action, and recovery-record diagnostics instead of suggesting an unsafe retry.
  • Preserve the existing OpenShell absence requirement and mutable-name deletion refusal for live retained sandboxes.
  • Document the exact session-owned pre-publication recovery authority and retain its fail-closed cleanup boundaries.

Verification

  • npx vitest run --project cli src/lib/actions/sandbox/destroy-retained-recovery-flow.test.ts — 22 tests passed.
  • npm run docs — passed after the command-reference repair.
  • Independent documentation review of the repair — no findings.
  • npm run build:cli — passed.
  • node --max-old-space-size=8192 node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc -p tsconfig.cli.json — passed.
  • npm run checks:repository — 19 checks passed.
  • Pre-commit and pre-push hooks — passed, including publication validation and CLI TypeScript checks.
  • npm run test:changed — growth guardrails passed; the broad changed-test run reported five OpenShell/Homebrew trust failures. The four snapshot failures reproduce unchanged on base 8bb779046526e92956967cf27ae42c2c42c2d9b2, and the MXC contract rerun passed on both base and candidate.
  • Diff inspection and gitleaks found no secrets, API keys, or credentials.

A refusal test could pass even if remote sandbox deletion regresses, so the missing boundary assertion should be added before considering recovery coverage complete.

Safe to merge from this review. At 8a3b46e, the pre-publication recovery path is bound to the exact onboarding session, pending reservation, gateway, create-attempt nonce, lifecycle generation, and durable sandbox identity. OpenShell-confirmed absence is still required, while live, unknown, foreign, mismatched, partially published, and identity-free states remain fail-closed. I found no blocking correctness or security defect across the nine security-review categories, and every required check passes.

Non-blocking follow-ups, confirming the current Advisor and CodeRabbit findings:

  • Update docs/reference/commands.mdx so the retained-recovery procedure describes exact session-owned pre-publication reconciliation and its refusal boundaries. This prevents operator guidance from implying that a published registry generation is always required. A narrowly scoped documentation follow-up is sufficient.
  • Strengthen destroy-retained-recovery-flow.test.ts to assert the semantic retained-state and next-action text, and to prove every new refusal case never calls mutable-name OpenShell deletion. This protects the safety guidance and destructive boundary against regression. A narrowly scoped test follow-up is sufficient.

These gaps are worth fixing, but neither demonstrates a defect in the current deletion-authority implementation.

Safe to merge from this review at 8633022. The follow-up commit documents exact session-owned pre-publication recovery and adds the missing proof that tuple-mismatch refusal never invokes mutable-name OpenShell deletion. It does not change production behavior. The full check set has no pending or failing jobs, every required check passes, and the exact-head PR Review Advisor blocker gate is green. I found no new correctness or security blocker. GitHub does not permit this author account to approve its own pull request.

Reviewed exact head 8633022. The pre-publication recovery path remains fail-closed: it requires the same pending reservation session and exact recovery tuple, rejects identity-free or partially published authority, and does not issue a mutable-name delete. I verified all 22 retained-recovery tests plus the CLI build and typecheck. Exact-head CI, Advisor, CodeRabbit, commit signatures, and applicable E2E checks are clear. I found no blocking correctness or security issue.

#12015)

## Outcome

This PR now carries two accepted installer fixes:

- NemoClaw transfers protected managed-startup receipts on Docker Engine
27 without the daemon interpreting a numeric UID:GID pair as a passwd
entry.
- On macOS, operators can explicitly request a force-fresh reinstall
that removes NemoClaw/OpenShell-managed state through the canonical
whole-host uninstaller, keeps model caches, and starts fresh onboarding.

Fixes #12010
Resolves #12076

## Accepted stacked decision

Accepted product decision: #12076; explicit maintainer acceptance:
https:\/\/github.com\/NVIDIA\/NemoClaw\/issues\/12076#issuecomment-5737074714.
PR #12041 is the stacked implementation that was explicitly merged into
this branch by the accountable maintainer.

- **Consumer:** macOS operators recovering an interrupted or internally
inconsistent NemoClaw/OpenShell installation.
- **Owner:** the hosted installer orchestrates staging and reinstall;
the canonical staged `internal uninstall run-plan --all-gateway-ports
--destroy-user-data` remains the only state/resource deletion authority.
- **Lifecycle:** the reset runs before CLI installation and bypasses
legacy backup/recovery only when `--force-fresh-install` or
`NEMOCLAW_FORCE_FRESH_INSTALL=1` is explicit.
- **Compatibility:** the option is limited to Apple silicon macOS.
Persisted local Colima contexts resolve to an authoritative Unix socket
and remain selected through recovery and onboarding.
- **Security and recovery:** Docker-only labels, names, and image
references are not deletion authority. Recognizable residue without
trusted host state blocks reset for explicit reconciliation. If
canonical uninstall is incomplete, the installer stops and preserves
remaining state for retry. Model caches and unrelated `nemoclaw-acp`
files remain.
- **Validation contract:** public-flag lifecycle ordering, failure
preservation, fail-closed Docker residue detection, deferred Colima
recovery, Homebrew removal, platform scope, staged-source isolation,
Docker 27 receipt transfer, and workflow-level cancellation cleanup are
checked in.

## Changes

### Docker Engine 27 receipt compatibility

- Create only the Docker receipt seed container with numeric root user
`0` instead of `0:0`.
- Preserve `docker cp -a`, the Docker-managed volume, and the seed
security controls: no network, read-only root filesystem,
`no-new-privileges`, and no capabilities.
- Label receipt volumes for diagnostics and inventory. Force-reset does
not treat the mutable label as deletion authority; UUID-shaped receipt
volumes block cleanup for explicit reconciliation.
- Require the exact `--user 0` argument in unit coverage and reject
regression to `0:0`.
- Add a pinned Docker Engine 27.5.1 archive-copy boundary to the
protected multi-architecture managed-image startup selector.
- Verify ownership, modes, read-only mounting, isolation controls,
successful cleanup, failed-transfer cleanup, and exact platform-scoped
daemon identity.
- Add an always-running workflow cleanup step so cancellation cannot
strand the privileged Docker 27 daemon.
- Let the receipt-probe script derive the daemon name from validated run
ID, attempt, and platform inputs for both probe and cleanup; remove
workflow and fixture copies of the naming rule.
- Require the seed itself to be non-privileged and accept cleanup only
when Docker explicitly reports the container or volume absent; timeouts,
daemon errors, and permission errors fail the proof.
- Refresh the reviewed managed-startup runtime hash after current `main`
regenerated that artifact without updating its exact-hash contract.

### Force-fresh macOS reset

- Add `--force-fresh-install` and `NEMOCLAW_FORCE_FRESH_INSTALL=1` to
the hosted and versioned installer.
- Stage and build the selected candidate outside the active state root
before cleanup.
- Keep the maintained `lkg` downgrade guard active for force-fresh
requests; an intentional downgrade still requires an explicit immutable
release tag.
- Bound OpenClaw pre-extraction, staged-uninstaller preparation,
ownership preflight, and authoritative cleanup per process group;
timeout kills and reaps descendants, blocks package removal, and reports
incomplete cleanup when destructive work may have started.
- Run destructive cleanup only through the staged canonical all-gateway
uninstaller.
- Pass its hidden force-reset mode through every gateway-port child. The
standalone installer records a digest manifest for managed user-local
OpenShell binaries; canonical cleanup removes only matching binaries,
preserves foreign or changed files, and removes the manifest after
complete cleanup. Mutable Docker receipt labels are diagnostic only, and
inconclusive cleanup returns failure.
- Stop before Homebrew/package removal when the authoritative uninstall
is incomplete; do not erase recovery state after a failed sandbox or
Docker cleanup.
- Remove the duplicate installer-owned process, sandbox, Docker, and
state deletion implementation.
- Preserve and fail closed on receipt volumes or Docker-only containers
identified only by mutable labels, names, or image references. Stop
before cleanup when Docker is unavailable or residue lacks trusted host
state.
- Keep the resolved Colima `DOCKER_HOST` authoritative after deferred
Node.js installation by leaving `DOCKER_CONTEXT` unset.
- Document the macOS-only destructive scope, preserved model caches,
environment equivalent, safe invocation, and fail-closed behavior.

## Verification

Candidate: `a9bd2f8bd5749c00764430a24f8943d1267c2666`; canonical base at
publication: `20f7b2c9f883901d28f7fbf4f95e44ab38bb9c06`.

- Focused installer, Colima recovery, Docker 27 cleanup contract, and
protected workflow suites: 4 files and 109 tests passed.
- Focused maintained-downgrade and bounded force-reset preparation
suites: 2 files and 91 tests passed.
- Final Advisor repair batch: 4 files and 144 tests passed.
- Canonical uninstall ownership and residual-volume batch: 6 files and
65 tests passed; the final structural refactor: 5 files and 56 tests
passed.
- Receipt ownership, Docker-only detection, environment routing, help,
and growth-guard batch: 4 files and 45 tests passed.
- Labelled volume fixture compatibility: 2 files and 13 tests passed.
- Managed OpenShell binary ownership and remaining-PATH rejection: 3
files and 38 tests passed.
- Protected OpenShell installer template remained at its base-trusted
digest; installer hash validation and its 3 trust regressions passed.
- Legacy pre-label receipt-volume detection fails closed before any
cleanup; the focused receipt regressions and full 33-test
installer/growth batch passed.
- CodeRabbit cleanup repair batch: 3 files and 46 tests passed; the
wider uninstall sweep passed 530 tests, and its lone suite-load timeout
passed on exact retry.
- Docker planned-volume absence is accepted only for exact daemon
not-found evidence; deletion and inconclusive-inspection regressions
plus growth guardrails passed in an 18-test batch.
- Advisor ownership repair: Docker-only label/name/image residue is
preserved and blocks force-fresh until explicitly reconciled; label
alone is not deletion authority.
- Docker absence verification captures stdout/stderr for both container
and volume inspections; focused proof plus growth guardrails passed 19
tests.
- XDG user-bin routing and four-helper standalone manifests feed a
read-only staged canonical ownership preflight before deletion;
malformed or mismatched manifests stop cleanup at that single owner.
- Merged `main` at `20f7b2c9f883901d28f7fbf4f95e44ab38bb9c06` (OpenClaw
2026.9.1); kept direct runtime-bundle hash enforcement at the
regenerated `b6363673…` digest. The merged contract and focused suites
passed 67 tests.
- Latest merged-main ownership/image-removal repair: 51 focused tests,
137 affected tests after #12082/#12083, and `npm run validate:pr`
passed.
- Canonical ownership-preflight and convention-safe cleanup repair: 62
focused tests, `npm run docs`, installer hash verification, and `npm run
validate:pr` passed.
- Merged-main #11917 compatibility plus the explicit Docker-inventory
assertion: 131 affected tests and `npm run validate:pr` passed.
- Bounded ownership/cleanup process groups and label-neutral receipt
preservation: 51 focused tests, descendant-reaping assertions,
TypeScript, and `npm run validate:pr` passed.
- Direct canonical receipt inventory covers every volume name, with
labelled and unlabelled preservation regressions; focused tests,
TypeScript, and `npm run validate:pr` passed.
- `npm run docs` — passed, including generated variants, routes, links,
and MDX validation.
- `bash -n scripts/install.sh` — passed.
- `shellcheck scripts/install.sh` — passed.
- `npm run source-shape:check` — passed without increasing the budget.
- `npm run validate:pr` — passed, including formatting, lint, repository
policy, E2E phase semantics, growth guardrails, secret scanning,
publication validation, builds, and CLI typechecking.
- Prior live Docker Engine 27.5.1 arm64 compatibility evidence
reproduced the `0:0` passwd failure, passed with user `0`, verified
ownership and modes, enforced the read-only mount, and verified
success/failure cleanup.
- Prior live macOS/Colima force-fresh evidence completed successfully
while preserving the model cache.
- Exact-head GitHub CI and Advisor verification are pending for this
candidate.

## Scope

The receipt change remains the narrow fix requested by #12010. The
additional force-fresh surface is the explicitly accepted and merged
scope from #12041. The current follow-up removes duplicate deletion
authority, fails closed on incomplete cleanup, preserves the validated
Colima target, adds missing operational documentation, and closes the
workflow cancellation leak identified by exact-head review.
